  2. It's May 18th......like you said....take a step back and let all the emotions settle. Don't focus on going out until next week, you and Sam will have the itch by then. Also consider yourself a lucky man and great father.....this day in age you have a daughter with her head definitely screwed on straight who loves spending time with he Dad! It's not always about the trophy....it's about the life experiences you are exposing her to that will last in her mind forever! Sent from my moto z3 using Tapatalk

  3. If you like Chris Cornell ( from soundgarden and audioslave) my friend will be covering his songs tonight 730 pm. Friends, fans, common spectators and/or detractors - looks like tomorrow night (Monday, May 18th) @7:30pm I will be going live on here with the help of my friend / fellow musician / sound engineer / technical advisor / fellow beer connoisseur and videographer Mark Raecher. Please feel free to grab some cocktails, get FB streaming to your TV or surround sound, sit back and relax as I pay tribute to, and celebrate the life of, one of our generations' biggest talents, Chris Cornell. Feel free to share this with anyone you think would appreciate it. Hope to see you then! Cheers! https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=3157674490943304&id=100001023512759&sfnsn=mo.

  4. Thanks buddy ! You are 100% spot on. I know it’s not about the trophy at the end of the day. But the quality time with my daughter and I enjoying the woods. But not sure who wants her to get a bird more , me or her lol. I’m sure we’ll be back out there after exams. Just deflating right now.

  5. not about the destination but the journey my friend. Enjoy the times when you can still hunt with your daughter. Esp being a senior - she will be off and busy at college next spring. As much as you want her to tag and be successful you both will remember all the times out far more. Take a few days and try again. Sometimes a little break does wonders. I bet most of your disappointment is that you want her to succeed so bad and i bet she just as much wants to in your eyes. You know what that means - you both are good folks and youve sure raised a good kid. Try again after her tests and you prob drop that bird and if not she will have stories to tell about how her Dad took her turkey hunting during a pandemic. Good luck to you both!

  6. He was for sure gobbling at your calling, but he also may have heard a hen that you not could hear...When a tom gets really cranked up on the roost, he often gobbles at anything and every thing..Crows, woodpeckers, even distant gunshots...As a general rule, he'll gobble on the roost for 20 minutes to perhaps half an hour...Gererally, shortly before they fly down, they'll gobble more often for a minute or two, and then go quiet for several minutes before they fly down.. If it is still and you are close enough you may hear their wingbeats as they fly down or hear them hit the leaves...Often you won't but the gobble will sound different when they gobble on the ground.... It is tough waiting while the bird gobbles away in the tree, but you now know what may happen if you call to him on the roost...Don't be in too much of a hurry to start calling if you hear a change in volume of the roost gobbles..He may sound a lot louder according to which direction he is gobbling, I,e, towards you or away from you... Once you are positive he is down, give a call..oft yelps, clucks, or purrs, whatever you feel most confident with... If he answers your call, call back once more..If he answers the second time, put the call down and get ready...If there are no hens around and he is in the mood to come, he may come in quite quickly...Hopefully he'll gobble a few times so you can keep track of him, but don't count on it...Often once they decide to come, they'll often come in silent...Don't move anything other than your eyes if you can help it, unless you are sure he is out of sight...Have your gun rested on your knee in the general direction you expect him to come...When he comes into view, you will probably have to move the gun some to get on him...Wait until his vision is blockd by a tree or something before you make your move to adjust your aim...No way will you get away with moving on an adult gobbler wthin gun range unless his vision is obscured... Good luck

  7. Turkeyfeathers, I want to remind you of this...…. “ deer hunting fills my freezer but turkey hunting fills my heart “ That was your quote to me when I got my 2nd ever bird! You wouldn't be getting up before the crack of dawn and spending all that time in the woods if you didn't love all the other things about hunting. Whether you and your daughter get a bird or not you are going to remember all those times together when she is all grown up. My daughter is 15 and I would love to get her out there with me but she just has no interest at all. Probably all the times I took her deer hunting and couldn't see a deer to save my life. You have had action! Get back on the horse and get out there with her when her exams are over.....Pulling for you guys!!!

  9. Next time don't call at all until you are sure he is on the ground..By calling to a bird in a tree, you are encouraging him to sit up there and wait for the hen ( you) o appear, because that's the way it is supposed to work... Since you didn't flush or see any hens, there is a good chance that you would have called that gobbler in if you had waited for him to fly down before calling.. Keep at it, Biz..This morning was a very good learning experience..

  16. Text book hunt this morning. Soft tree yelps in the early morning darkness. 3 gobbles from the treetops 100 yards away. 3 hens glide down and hit the ground. Hens slowly saunter and feed nearing my low pitched purrs with Tom following behind. Bang!

  20. I told you and @Jeremy K two weeks ago that when youre sure the tom answered you, turn around and throw the call as far from you as you possibly can. Unless you can quietly destroy it. Jeremy followed directions and enjoyed a few days of being the most celebrated hunter in SKRE Nation

  21. I’ve hunted 7x at smaller partial of say 15-20 acres surrounded by 3 other similar surrounding properties. 5x I’ve had birds hang up at 75-100 yards . 1 day no gobbles . Yesterday had him stall early morning and late morning hung up. Then a trespasser snuck in between and shot. He was on a rope. Have heard 5 other shot/ shots on neighboring properties all on birds cutting off my calling. Getting pretty deflated. When shot heard yesterday at 11:15 I immediately muttered Fug me an removed head net and started breaking down stick blind and gobbler lounger. At this point daughter started crying and said I don’t want you to be disappointed in me as I’ve never shot one. I said what ?! You’ve never missed , you’ve never botched up , scared a bird. I said I should be crying not you as I can’t get one under your gun.She laughed at least. We’ve been trying since youth season for her years ago. Somehow I manage to usually tag out each year . Hearing shot on bird yesterday may have been last straw for us this year. Who knows what got whacked the days we didn’t hunt. The trespasser shot really pisses me off. Already wiped and oiled the guns and put back into the safe. She has 2 AP exams this week so truly doubtful I’ll be waking her up at some ungodly hour to go as she needs her sleep . Not going there by myself . Contemplating just pretending tomorrow is June 1st and calling it a season. We’ve had a lot of fun , saw and heard a lot of really cool things during this season. Rant of disappointment over. Good luck to all still with unpunched tags.

  22. It’s sad that the politics ruin this state, I like living where I do. When you stop and think what NY offers a outdoorsman and sights to see ( Finger lakes , Great Lake , 1000 islands , Niagara’s falls , Adirondack @ Catskills , salt water fishing , tons of state land, Watkins glen race track, etc. I like it here , I just wish we could turn this state around but the more conservative upstater’s that move the more we are out voted by the liberals.

  24. 5/18/20: Heard gobbling starting at 508am. Knew it was like 100yds or so away on my level of land (not downhill). I called back and forth for 30 full minutes. But I could tell he wasn't moving closer or father, but figured he had to be on ground by 540am. So I walked like 10 yards, stopped, repeat. Hiding behind trees. I'd call once in a while and he kept gobbling. I could tell He still wasn't moving. When I finally got closer, I expected to see him on the ground but didn't. Then he jump off his tree, but instead of down on my level. He landed above the steep rocks in powerlines and walked around. He never made another sound. After 1.5 more hours I walked up there but didn’t see him. Close, oh well. Maybe I should have called less and maybe he would have come to me Eventually? Pic of rocks he landed above. 29. Thanks again guys; tomorrow his ashes will return home with the ones he loved and that loved him. Our plans are to have an urn at home and at camp as that was a very special place for him as well. I've owned several canine companions; however our connection was much deeper with him. His love for camp encompassed hanging out on "our" couch and watching the wood-stove fire.. This picture was from this last Easter; we plan to head to camp this weekend and know the tears will flow and we'll speak of great memories..

  30. I didn’t open the vets, eye Drs ,or the public market and it’s all done with the made up six foot distance, waiting in cars till, called in and masks . We’ve got together with friends and family since the get go , one can hangout in a yard with chairs spaced out , while eating drinking and talking . For the record for many years , I was the guy who sprayed down the gym equipment before and after I used it, washed my hands before I left and when I got home . Brought disposable TV remote covers to hotels we stayed in and disinfected light switches etc in the room . I started my shift at the firehouse with Lysol and a rag, phones ,keyboards ,doors ,light switches and on and on . I didn’t have to search for N95, gloves, disinfectant, hand sanitizers because I had them . If more followed my standard practices we wouldn’t be where we are today . Wash your hands ,wash common surfaces and don’t lick your fingers to much . One can live life and avoid a virus very easily , well perhaps not at a population density of 28,000 per square mile , but that’s not us . I will now sociably distance in our hot tub, with a Montecristo cigar White Label and Mrs Nomad runs me out gin and tonics , she’s a lucky woman !

  39. I buy they happy jack kennel dip II (2) For my turkey gear I fill a 5 gallon pale 1/2 full with warm water. Shake the kennel dip bottle good, Add about 4 tablespoons of kennel dip to make a cloudy white water solution. Put on rubber dish gloves and dunk each article of clothing and wring out and hang up to dry. I also dip my turkey vest after emptying everything out. Whatever solution is left I pour it through a paint filter into an old 409 spray bottle to be used to freshen up outer layers through the season. ( make sure to label the bottle tick spray) I have been doing this for years and spend many hours in the woods in a number of states and some heavily tick infested areas and I have never had a tick bite. I have watched hundreds of ticks on my clothes start walking then start doing circles and fall off dead. For bow hunting clothes I must down with the spray and then spray scent killer after that and no ticks and no issues with getti g winded by deer. Sent from my SM-G930VL using Tapatalk

  44. Believe it or not...….When we were looking to replace ours we shopped around quite a bit and ended up with Home Depot and I could not have expected any better. If you can find a pattern you like I would highly recommend them. They sub-contract all their countertop work. We picked a granite color we liked. They made an appointment for us with a local fabricator who let us pick our own slab and they formed the countertop from that slab. Then they sent someone out to take the measurements. Installation went like a breeze and the price in comparison was good. The only thing I had to do was take out the old one. They gave us enough notice so I could remove it a couple of days before they came. They will also place the sink for you. Worth giving it a shot.
