  6. My wife, The Lovely Mermaid, owns 107 acres and allows me to hunt it and also pay half the property taxes on it.... It is surrounded by several hundred acres of mostly forested land...Judging by the gunfire I hear during deer season, the neighbors all hunt..I don't know or care care what they shoot, because it is none of my business... I have lived in the area all of my life and also have access to several hundred acres of private land that I have permission to hunt, but since I have become a doddering old man I spend most of my time sitting in my heated tower blind overlooking my food plots, wondering why I am sitting there waiting for some silly ass deer when I could be doing something fun, like hunting small game, upland birds and waterfowl, or fishing...

  8. Got the smoke poles out to check zero and try a couple of new loads for the upcoming season. The Thompson Center Cherokee 45 caliber is what I am going to use this year for Deer. It has been one of the most picky rifles I have ever come across, I have finally got this thing shoot the way I like using Pyrodex RS and cast lead Thompson Center Maxi Balls, a load which pretty much is the equivalent the the 44 mag pistol load which should be effective with no problem out to 100 yards or so. The Thompson Center Hawken is also 45 cal and that shoots just about everything I stuff down the stainless Green Mountain barrel well, but she weighs a couple of more pounds than the Cherokee which is a dream to handle and carry. Got the Traditions Squirrel rifle 32 cal zeroed in with the changed out fire sights, my old eyes are a problem with any open sights these days and the fire type sights have been my best solution and all three muzzleloaders now have them. Will hit the timber and see if I can kill something. Al

  10. In the hospital where a family member lay gravely ill, the relatives gathered in the waiting room. Finally, the doctor came in looking tired and somber. "I'm afraid I'm the bearer of bad news," he said as he surveyed the worried faces. "The only hope left for your loved one at this time is a brain transplant. It's an experimental procedure, very risky, but it is the only hope. Insurance will cover the procedure, but you will have to pay for the BRAIN." The family members sat silent as they absorbed the news. After a time, someone asked, "How much will a brain cost?" The doctor quickly responded, "$5,000 for a Democrat's brain; $200 for a Republican's brain." The moment turned awkward. Some of the Democrats actually had to try not to smile, avoiding eye contact with the Republicans. A man unable to control his curiosity, finally blurted out the question everyone wanted to ask,"Why is the Democrat's brain so much more than a Republican's brain?" The doctor smiled at the childish innocence and explained to the entire group, "It's just standard pricing procedure. We have to price the Republicans' brains a lot lower because they're used."

  13. It is obvious you are very passionate about the climate change or global warming or whatever they are calling it these days. I can respect that. If that is your reason for supporting Biden then that is the candidate for you. IMO, we need clean air and clean water. We should be recycling even more than we do.. etc. I don't think anyone on here would disagree with that. But I am still not on this climate change train. I don't see how the facts support it. I can't remember the exact facts last time I looked into it but the earth warmed like .4 degrees in the last 20 years or something like that. The earth has gone in cycles for millions of years. Was it global warming when the earth was way warmer when the dinosaurs roamed? Was it global cooling when we had an ice age? The last thing this country needs is a crazy green deal, where we will be the only country that follows it, it makes Us even less competitive in a global market while countries like India and China become industrial machines. I don't really know all the facts on that and it honestly isn't at the top of my priority list.. What I do know is that if it is only the USA making changes, it isn't going to do much for the global environment but it is going to put us way behind the 8 ball compared to everyone else. And at this moment, it is imperative that we become more competitive, not less. I am much more concerned about being able to keep my job another 15-20 years, having my daughter get a good paying job and having a robust economy than I am about the polar ice caps melting.

Still have to build the stairs and then make some darkening curtains for the inside of the windows. These cold mornings are getting the blood flowing, can't wait to sit in a tree!

  20. In Texas there is a town called New Braunfels, where there is a large German-speaking population. One day, a local rancher driving down a country road noticed a man using his hand to drink water from the rancher's stock pond. The rancher rolled down the window and shouted: "Sehr angenehm! Trink das Wasser nicht. Die kuehe haben darein geschissen." This means: “Glad to meet you! Don't drink the water. The cows have shit in it." The man shouted back: "I'm from New York and just down here campaigning for Joe Biden. I can't understand you. Please speak in English." The rancher replied: "Use both hands."

  27. Yeap.. I have an area 15 minutes away in a wma that I have scouted for this year. I moved my camera last week and I found tons of fresh rubs . I keep on seeing this pair on my camera in 3 different spots a mile apart at the furthest.. Maybe the rubs will help me pin him down.

  31. It is definitely a handy thing to have and you never know when you will need it. My brother in law gave me that one when he moved out of his apartment, 30 some years ago. They don't make them like that any more. It can sit unplugged more than a year, get plugged in, and runs like it did when new. Sometimes, I use it for beverages when we have a big party, but usually it just sits there unplugged. Those old ones used more juice, but they were very dependable. The time it worked the best for me was about 20 years ago, when the temperature got up in the eighties on opening day of gun season. I shot a large-bodied spike buck, shortly after sunup, skinned it, cut it in half, and put it in the fridge by 9:00 am. There was not room for another in the fridge, so I squirrel hunted that afternoon. That was the best squirrel hunting I ever saw, prior or since. Every deer hunter can relate to being pestered by squirrels. It is almost like they somehow know that you are there for deer, not squirrels. I turned the tables on them that warm November afternoon, armed with my Ruger 10/22 (aparently they thought it was a deer gun). As they made their feerlessly up to my tree, they got quite the surprise. I ended up with a limit of greys that day, and few bonus reds.

  35. It depends on how old the deer is. You can skip that step with 6 month olds. 1.5's should age 5 days, 2.5's a week, and 3.5's 10 days. As long as the temperature is kept in the 33 - 45 F range, it don't hurt to err on the longer side. Sometimes it is tough to guess the age of a doe. Most years, it has not been difficult to keep the meat of a skin-on carcass in that range, for those times, hanging in my insulated garage. I cover all the windows, to keep out the sunlight by day, and open a window at night, to let in the cool air. The concrete floor helps hold a cooler temperature and the hide insulates against temperature rise. A probe thermometer can be used to measure the meat temperature if you are nervous or afraid of spoilage. In 35 years of doing this, I have never had one spoil. I always check the long range forecast, prior to starting the aging process, to determine if the deer fridge will be needed. I no longer hunt early bow, so it seldom is. If it is going to be too warm, then I skin the deer, cut the rear off and hang in the fridge as described in my earlier post. I have always used an antique, non-frost free fridge, and the skinned carcasses don't dry out too bad in there. The hide keeps those hung in the garage from drying out too much. Except for the tenderloins , which should be removed prior to aging so they dont dry out too much. They also get more tender, if you leave them in the fridge a couple days before eating. You can tell when the rigor motis has passed by feeling the meat. When first killed, the meat will feel soft. As rigor motis takes hold (starts immediately at death and peaks about 8 hours after, depending on temp), it will get harder, like a pencil eraser. The meat is ready to process and freeze after it gets soft again, similar to when it was fresh killed. Last year, it was cool enough after November 2 to hang this 3.5 year old 10 days with the hide on. Note the insulated wall, cardboard covered window behind and the antique GE non-frost free "deer fridge". We still have a roast or two left from that one and they have been as tender as those from any 1.5 year old buck that I can recall. That was my first deer last year, so the grind is long gone (I always zip-lock) the grind from the first deer of the year (used first), then vacuum seal the rest.

  42. What I really find amazing is that all of the anti Trump/never Trump /pro Biden advocates can't come to realize that their vote is not going to Biden. Kamala Harris is going to be your next president if Biden gets elected . You should be looking at her thoughts and policies and if that doesn't scare you nothing will. Biden is just her ticket to the white house and nothing more.

  44. So after I got the Squirrel rifle sighted in with patched round balls I decided to fire some little 110 gr maxi balls I found online, the rifle has a 1 in 48 twist so in theory it should shoot bullets half way decent. So I fire two shots and both bullets print right on the money but when I pull the trigger on number three I get a misfire, put another cap on hope that I can clear the barrel and another pop from just the primer. Take the nipple off and stick a pick into the flash hole, reassemble and fire another shot and still nothing. So this is the first time ever I had a failure to fire with any of my black powder rifles and one thing I know is is not so easy to clear the barrel of an old style sidelock. Unlike an inline where one can just take off the breach plug and ram the load out with a rod these sidelocks are a whole different ballgame. But something came to the rescue, I had in my black powder box a thing-a ma-jig called the "Thompson Center Magnum Silent Ball Discharger" it is one of those things like the stuck case remover I have on my reloading bench, and as the saying goes, you may never have the need to use it but the one time you do you will wish you had one. So I actually got this gizmo as a gift about 25 years ago and had no idea if it would work, read the instructions and assembled it, put the end over the nipple and gave it a hard push and 'pop!" the load flew out onto the ground as neat as could be, so this thing works great and I am so happy to have had it available. Only had one small CO2 cartridge that came with the device and the one firing depleted it's contents so that ended the maxi ball experiment until I get some new CO2 cartridges, have some ordered and on the way.
