  1. I got out yesterday for the last couple of hours. Pretty windy but wind was in the right direction. Saw 2 doe way off and literally just at sunset this guy walks out and gives me a shot at 22 yds. He was walking to a scrape behind me, paid no attention to the little bit of moving I had to do to get on him. He never stopped walking even when I gave him a couple of bleahs. So I shot anyway. At first I thought it was high and too far back but he was angled away from me and I was in a stand so it actually was a good shot. He ran maybe 80 yds. And of course piled up in the thick stuff. I am so blessed! 2 deer with a bow! And I have great friends that came to help me with the track and drag!!

  2. Hey guys just wandering thru forums figured I'd stop in and say hi (dino rocks your arrow thread is amazing!)...been a crazy wierd year. Ended up living at camp all summer to try and give my family some "normal" summer. Was driving 1.5hr to work each way lol but was worth it to be able to fish every afternoon. Spent the summer on Erie again. Fishing was slower than last year but the class was much better. Starting to enjoy fishing more than hunting ever since my dad moves to SC. Kids are getting more involved with setting the trolling gear and its a blast. Boat went to storage 2nd week of October so went into hunting mode got a doe first week and a 5 pt Saturday. Hoping to set some traps this season if I can get the time but work schedule may prevent that. Heading back to Big moose area to hunt the adks next weekend but may end up fishing more than hunting this year. Some great threads and pics from you guys so far this season. Good luck all! Here's a partial photo dump from this summer. Hope everyone stayed sane this year! Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using Tapatalk

  3. Last night in 9F, I posted this in the live from the woods thread so I'm not going to write it all over but, I got lucky! As others have said many times it can change in a minute! From the time this guy walked out into the clover patch until I shot was honestly < 15 seconds.

  5. So close!! I had a buck within 10 feet of my brush blind (between blind and tree In the photo) but not a clear shot. Once he got in that close, he knew something was up after a minute, stomped his hoofs once and leaped out of range with a snort. I saw him slowly walking away through the stem density. That will get the heart rate up! Good luck to the hunters this morning!

  7. From my own observations, over more than four and a half decades of deer hunting, the "MAGIC DAY" is November 11th. And the five days on either side of that are really good too. This is the time in my area, where you will see a mature buck standing in the middle of an open field, walking along with nose to the ground oblivious, or just acting "dumb". This is the period where the majority of the doe's are just about ready to breed, but not quite ready to stand for a buck. But that "sweet scent" is everywhere! And driving the bucks crazy! Of course there will be individual doe's that will come into estrous, from the middle of October on. Leading to some very intense localized buck action!! But starting on or about November first, the "seeking" and "chasing" will really intensify, leading up to what I call the magic day of Nov. 11th. Shortly after this time, the action will slow down as the bucks tend the doe's. But as soon as they spend their "time" with the doe, they will be off to find another. So usually until the end of November, a hunter could catch a buck on the move, looking for a doe. This all falls pretty much the same time year, after year, after year.

  9. Time to be in the woods! As predicted, mature bucks are starting to be on their feet in the daytime. A few days ago, spike bucks were running does...all the excitement seems to bring the old guys out.

  14. Eat pizza and hot wings the night before, then grab a Stewart's egg and sausage sandwich on the way to your spot. When you let one rip you'll know if the wind is right. If you smell it for more then 10 seconds the thermals are not in your favor.

  17. In the property I hunted for 20 years, our box blinds got ravaged by them. One was eaten right down to the studs. in the spring of 2019 we killed 11 in 2 days and killed another 7 throughout the deer season. One was in the box blind when I attempted to enter in one morning. My wife had one trying to climb into the one we named the "porcupine" stand. All she had was a pair of Nikon binos in her hand. She won the fight.

  19. There are so many options out there. 300+$ pants should last. I would go with first light, kuiu, or Sitka before I bought the same pants again. Filson makes high quality classics, I fear they are runming on name and reputation and im not positive that they are keeping up with new technologies.. Crazy is defined as doing the same thing and expecting a different outcome.

  25. Yeah, I erased the last three numbers. Rattler, VJP, Papist or one of those clowns might report me to the DEC for trespassing, poaching or something. Knowing them they'd claim that they remembered my back tag number when they saw me running away 41 hunting seasons ago. LOL

  27. Just got permission to hunt a 7 acre piece of private with 6 of the 7 wooded and surrounded by preserve. Only house on this side of the road and the home owner (sister in law’s Aunt) says she sees what she believes is a 12 pointer come out and nibble her bushes in the back of the grassy area on a regular basis. Her grandfather used to own the entire piece and they all (including her father and uncles) hunted back there and they always got nice deer. She is the 3rd gen to own this property. The fam sold off the large piece to the town back in the 60s or something. Hasn’t been hunted since the 80s. I feel like I won the lottery! Gonna scout Saturday afternoon and hang a stand. Hunt it Sunday morning. Did I mention its within a half hour form home? TOTALLY STOKED!!

  28. Well I didnt get chance to post this yesterday so , had a spike come by at 8 am and this doe came out about 9 am gave me a 20 yards shot ran 20 yard bed down and died in sight of the stand , nice doe dressed 110. So went out this am to back of property took an hours walk to get there. Was just settled in and was going to read a few pages of online novel I've been reading when I heard walking ,watched this guy come across neighbors woods and as it got closer I decided I'd better shoot it though it is not biggest I have on cam at 20 yards it went behind I tree I drew and it froze. Thought about liver shot but it was only a second and it stepped out other side of tree and gave me perfect heart/lung shot at 22 yards , ran about 45 and collapsed . 1st time i broke a blade on broadhead shooting a deer. Dressed 150 or so ( notches on my 120 year old hog scale are pretty wore between 140 and 160 so I cannot get closer than 2 lbs or so. ) Update, Was 149 on butcher's scale at processor, guess the old hog scale still works!

  29. Got my 2nd bow buck in my fairly short bow hunting adventure yesterday. The longer version of the story is in the live from the woods thread. This was the first case of ground shrinkage for me,but only when it comes to antlers. I thought he had more points. The antlers are well past his ears though and not too skinny. His body is big,i hope to get a scale to check. Not sure if he is just a big 1.5 year old or maybe a small racked 2.5 year old. His body was a lot bigger than the two does that came through before him.

  30. Wow what a morning, not even sure where to start.got settled in right around 630 and waited for day break.around 730 i had a buck sneak in behind me and make a scrape 20yrds from stand.decided to pass as he looked smaller, watched him wonder onto neighbors property around 80 yards away.a few mins later i see another figure then heard antlers smashing, sure enough it was bucks fighting!!!!gave em a few grunts, got their attention but wouldnt commit.a few mins later 2 doe pop out and i saw a dark figure around 120yards away.let out a few grunts and it slowly worked my way.got within 50 and knew it was him!!!worked his way right to me at 30,drew and bow hit limbs on pine tree!!!!had to draw down,by then he's walking away from me.give em 2 more grunts and he turns right back to me beating up saplings on his way.draw and the rest is history at about 17 yards!cousin also took a shot today but at a 6pter,right under him at 35 yards.felt my phone going off as i had this buck coming in.answered n told em to hold on,all this happened with him on the phone in coat pocket!!!!.target buck and couldnt be more happy!!!!!by far my biggest buck aswell!sorry for long story, have plenty more i could say but you guys get it.

That'll be the day!! You come onto my property and pose a threat to me, my family, or my home and I promise you, your life will be in danger!! This state is just so F'ed up it's sickening...

  32. Hehehehe...I certainly never did much long range ( over 100 yards) shooting with shotgun slugs, but I have killed about an equal number with 12 gauge and 20 gauge, not two or three, but perhaps 25 for each gauge, and I could not see much difference in effectiveness for either gauge with decent shot placement... I only ever killed one with the 16 gauge..Perhaps there is something magical about that gauge...

  33. Back in the day, when we had to use shotguns in my area, my main deer gun was a Rem 1100 20 gauge skeet gun with a 26"smoothbore barrel ..I shot some deer with it with the double bead on the skeet bbl and then I had the receiver drilled & tapped for a scope mount and killed a bunch more deer with it with a Weaver 1.5X scope...Most of my shots were from 40 to 75 yards, and I had good luck with good hits.. Most were killed with Foster slugs, but toward the end I used Brennekke slugs and they worked the best... In the early 1990s, rifled barrels became much more available ..I bought a rifled cantilever BBL for my 12 gauge 1100 because they still did not have rifled bbls for the 20..Worked very well for me for 10 or 15 years using std vel. BRI sabots, which grouped around 3-4" at 100 yards... When rifles were legalized, I put my slug guns aside and never looked back...

  34. Buy whatever model you want but don’t skimp on the back up camera. It came with the 2013 F150 I bought in 2017 and it was a game changer when it came to backing into parking spots AND hooking up the trailer. I can hook up our camping trailer on the first shot with no help every time. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  35. Currently in a 15 ram 2500 6.7 hemi it's a machine....bad on gas (12.5 town 14 highway) but not much she won't tug along. I love it. Before that I had a 12 ram 1500 5.7 and loved that too. Really a nice truck no issue towing my boat from Rochester NY to Erie PA. But upgraded to tow my camper. Mine had the 6 speed trans not the 10 (I think it is) so I didn't get as food gas milage if I remember right I got 17 or so I have driven a few of the newer rams with the 10(I think lol) speed in them and they get way better gas milage than my old one. The ride is super smooth and the interiors are really nice. Most guys I've talked to about them average 20+mpg Have also driven a f150 with the 6cy turbo and what a riot that is but idk if I'd want to fix it if something did go bad. Ford interiors are awesome! Another buddy just bought a 19 tremor package f 350 Diesel and wow that's all I can say lol! I had a 08 chevy 1500 before the ram 1500 I'd be hard pressed to buy another one as that one fought me all the way to the day I traded it in. Toyota hold their values so we'll! 36. I have a 2009 f150 4x4. It's got 170k I've put 120k on it myself had it for 6 or 7 years now. Cant complain besides tires and breaks never had an issue put new plugs in it last year and that's it. Does good in 4x4 only thing I dont like is the ass end is really light but that's pretty common in the fords from the ones I've driven. I will say I almost bought the Chevy sitting next to it but my truck was 4k cheaper with less miles and 2 years newer.
