  2. This enclosed blind is really paying off this year. I don’t how many times it’s been since the Gun opening that we have had at least some sort of perception but it’s been quite a bit. It’s currently freezing rain but dry and warm inside. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  3. Grandson and I harvested a doe around 3:15. Wish he would have shot it but due to the way we were setup I was the only one with a shot but he was right there and I am calling it our harvest. Only deer we saw all day. Nice end to a good day with him

  7. Samantha and I hunted at Gman’s til 11:15 and saw nothing . Decent wind and snow but being in the glass tower she was warm which beats seeing nothing and being cold.

  8. Sitting here with my grandson reminds me of way back when all this hunting was new to me. The anticipation and excitement, the rookie mistakes I made, the deer killed and the deer missed, the shared hunts with friends and my brother. Even the bad days were good now that I look back at them. Over my wool today, I am wearing my original decades old blaze orange vest. It is a bit worn just like the guy wearing it but the tales it could tell. Good luck Everyone, brian

  10. Headed out this morning with my youngest daughter who’s 7 years old. She finally had enough interest this year to see what she’s been missing out on. We will set up in the enclosed box crank the heat and have some fun. I expect this to be a short sit but you never know. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  11. Was out for the last 1 1/2 tucked into a cut corn field. Ended up seeing 2 doe in the middle part of the field after taking a short walk up from the dip our permanent shack sits at the bottom of. Also had one doe blow out of the standing corn on the neighbors property. After getting back to the shack I decided to talk a quick walk behind it since it looked like I would have a shot at the gas line if I cleaned a lane through the scrub brush. I walked down the hill finding a real nice deer trail and low and behold when I looked down I found my first ever Shed Antler.....old and all chewed up but still pretty cool. I let my son go and get it and now he wants to shed hunt this spring. Sent from my moto z3 using Tapatalk

  12. So I was in the stand by 6:45 this morning, there was about 5 inches of snow on the ground so no need for a flashlight which was nice. I started seeing movement about 7:15 about 100 yards below me, a few does moving into a stand of mature pines, then a few more. I have seen virtually nothing since opening day of gun so I was feeling good about this. A few does here and there meandering though the creek bottom kept my attention for the next half hour or so. Out of the corner of my eye I catch a big doe trotting up the hill to my left, I have no idea how she got there, or where she came from, then I see a deer behind her and put my scope on it, its a buck!. I see the rack and move the crosshairs to the shoulder and let 'er rip. It looked like he dropped, I think... The doe is standing 75 yards to my left, unalarmed, looking over her shoulder at where the buck was. I put the scope on her but decide not to shoot. I sit tight for a few minutes while she feeds her way up the hill a bit more. I climb down and find the buck right where he was standing. I recognized this buck as the one we called the "the crab claw buck" I have pics of him 30 yards from where I shot him. He broke off half of his split G4 (?) on his right side since the last video/pics. Really cool buck. It was quite a job getting him dressed, out of the woods and into the truck alone. I have never really cared how much a deer weighs, but I just may go grab a scale, this one seems very heavy! I also found two beds in the snow within yards of him, I am wondering if he wasn't bedded with that doe only 75 yards from me and I never saw them?

  14. Hunting with my grandson this morning. The creek we need to cross to get to where we wanted to go today, was running high. Somehow we got across in the dim light without getting our feet too wet. Ice pellets and wet snow is falling. We are hunting from the ground in a patch of thick hemlocks. Other than the sound of the ice pellets all is quiet. A classic morning of deer hunting. Fingers crossed that we get the opportunity to take a deer but even if we do not, today is a success. Who knows how many more hunts I have in me? Good luck to all. Cherish your time afield regardless of whether you take a deer.

  15. Climbed down and headed to the car. Walk up on 2 doe feeding at about 20yds. I'm carrying a bow today. They see me, but they don't spook. Suburban deer. Do knock an arrow, but they meander away. I spend the next hour trying to get in close enough to shoot. Didn't happen though. Kept them within 75 the whole time and as close as 15 at the end, but just to many ground shrubs to give me a good shot with a bow. Cool game of cat and mouse though.

  26. I'm out in the cut blind. A couple of doe's crossed at first light. Nothing since. Will pull it out this weekend. Along with the other two hub blinds. My hunting partner will do some small pushes to me later. I'm no longer going to be so selective at this point in the season. But hoping he can get one of the big boys up to me? We'll see?

  27. This isn't post rut necessarily, its possibly even second rut. Many does that weren't bred will go back into estrus agian. 28 days after the peak of the first rut. Presure has taught the deer to be much more cautious but if you find low pressure areas you could see some amazing activity. Morning cruising can happen agian and often times the only bucks that can go the distance are the big boys.

  30. Some of you are die hard turkey hunters. I'm not, I go kill turkeys because it's that time of year and it's pretty fun but I don't hunt religiously for them. I'd be all for a rimfire rifle adaptation for spring turkeys like some states. Many of you would probably have a fit though. Why? A shotgun is a gun, a rifle is a gun. You get a bit more range out of a rimfire, (same with crossbow). It also would be slightly less sporting to shoot a tom at 100 yds, no? You think more birds would be killed during the season as a result? Absolutely. You think more people would be out? Yes. Would it make the turkeys even tougher to kill? Yes. Would those diehard turkey lovers look down at birds shot with rifle? Yes. Would it bug you if I only started turkey hunting during the spring if they allowed rifles? Yes. It's the same debate we're having here. A "slight tweak" to a regulation change and people who cherish turkey hunting would have a fit. I cherish archery hunting, so to me it's the same small tweak that I don't like. It's my opinion and I'm entitled to it. I don't mind being called a selfish elitist because I know where I stand. And I'll continue to defend my passions against foreign intruders as I see fit. The insults don't bother me. To me "selfish" is also demanding a change in the current season to force your way into it to appease you. Selfish works both ways, but apparently some people need better prescriptions because they can't see their actions are just as selfish as mine. Sent from my moto g(6) using Tapatalk

  32. Just dropped a load off. The anticipated turn around will have it ready for pick up at the end of January! Worth the wait though. I ended up getting mild slim jim's, dill slim jim's, maple breakfast, blueberry maple breakfast, texas style hots, and smoked jalapeno cheddar sausages. My wife's going to freak when I show her the bill!

  33. um u most certainly can use regular season tags in late season and more so your regular buck only tag changes to either sex,,,, does anyone read the regs or go thru the hunting course it amazing people that actually hunt and carry a gun have no clue what the regs are

  40. I’m really thinking about heading out when it’s light enough to see tomorrow, but before hunting hours (sunrise). The spot I have is kind of hard to navigate to in the dark, even with a flashlight, and I think I’d cause less of a ruckus by going in when I can see where I’m going. Legal shooting hours aren’t until 7:12 anyways.

  42. 12/3 I was called by a hunter last night that reported shooting a buck at 240 yards. The first shot was a clean miss, the second connected and the buck dropped at the shot, thrashed around, then got up and ran off. My first thought was this is a high back hit, but then he went on to say they found what looked to be evidence of it being gutshot. This didn’t add up, but to be on the safe side I scheduled the track for this morning. We started in the field at the hit site, and Luna took us to the drop of blood they had found in the woods. Before that, we saw the gutshot evidence was actually clumpy poop. There were a lot of live deer in the area evidenced by Luna going hot a few times. Also, a neighbor was in his stand and told us he had 9 doe and a spike run by him. We found a couple drops of blood further up the trail, but nothing after that. Multiple restarts from the field and from last blood produced no evidence of a fatally hit deer. We covered 2.8 miles circling through the woods before calling it. I believe we have a high back hit and this buck is still alive. This concludes our tracking season......heading to Florida. Hope everyone has a good winter. The good Lord willing, we’ll do this again next season. 90 tracks with 32 recoveries.

  45. Pair a red flashlight with reflective trail marking tacks. Pin them high and far between, you'll have zero issues. You can use patterns or even two different colored pins to navigate multiple routes effortlessly. Personally, ł like to be in position well before legal light. ł have punched tags minutes in to the season including my biggest buck to date and would not want to jeopardize an opportunity with a late start especially when some years ł am limited to a handful of all day sits.
