  2. So this am I was at the new house letting the painters in when I looked out the back window and saw a turkey vulture sitting on a limb from a dead ash tree that had fallen down, this tree is on the edge of thick brush and tall grass, anyways I watched the bird disappear into the tall grass and I knew something was in there. Went back tonight to check on the painting progress and then took my son for a walk out back in search of whatever the vulture found, didn’t take long to find. Looked like he was there for awhile and no way to tell what may have happened. I’m really gonna like our back yard for hunting!

  5. My dance card is filling up...I have three guys scheduled for the next three afternoons in my tower, and then another one Saturday.... That said, yesterday afternoon was the first PM sit I have had in my tower and NOT seen a deer....Hopefully they will co-operate...The guy who is hunting with me Thursday is a parapeligic, and the guy hunting Saturday has health issues and does not drive, so I will be driving about 20 miles RT to pick each one of them up and take them home...They are the ones I really hope to get a deer.....Either one would be be tickled to get a small buck or a doe...

  7. Finally was able to let the muzzleloader bark Friday afternoon with the new BH209 and Barnes combo. Looked like they were just up and causally feeding along the hillside. 75 yard pass through (you're looking at the exit) and she piled up at about 30 yards. Wish I would have weighed her before I started skinning, she may have been my largest doe to date.

  10. Well they say if a location is good enough for one trap it’s good enough for two. Set these in a field edge at a logging road entrance. Flat compass set in the background and a pipe dream set in the foreground. First double at a set we picked up.

  12. Well it's been a bit of a dry spell and the snow and blowing on the hill last week certainly didn't help the sets we had out. We had been using waxed dirt for the sets but had to revisit the dozen we had up there. Put another 11 out on new locations on the property end of last week and on the check this morning we were able to double on 2 nice reds. haven't been seeing the coyote movement that had shown on the cameras in the earlier season but we are on good location so hopefully we'll be ready when they make their return.

  13. This year I came to the realization that I’m a meat hunter ( although I do prefer my meat to have horns ) . Not having meat now bothers me more then not having antlers to toss in a pile .

  17. Does bird populations really play a big part in hunter success? The guys I know that kill 2 birds every spring kill 2 birds every spring regardless of population trends. The old saying about 90% of birds are killed by 10% of hunters is something I think is very true! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  20. I have details about every deer I've killed-sex, weight, weapon, where I was hunting, who I was hunting with, shot distance, where the shot hit, and distance ran after the shot, I wished I would have taken more pictures. I'm envious of those of you that have more detailed records and pictures. Sad part, way too many of the people I hunted with have passed away. It's a great way to remember them when I read my record book.

  21. Had a pretty busy day yesterday. Shot a good adult doe around 8am, she ran the wrong way on her death run. About 60-70 yards into the nastiest of thorn apple/redbrush tangled crap and it was downhill the wrong way. You see, she was on a ridge and of course its a 50-50 shot whether they go north or south. South is bad....... Oh well, I guess I can still drag uphill in the nasty stuff. In the afternoon I had a cold, wet sit for a couple hours before 5 doe & fawn came out on the edge of a field. I looked them over good to assure I didn't shoot a fawn and shot this nice doe. The first one in the morning dressed out at 120lbs and this one 131lbs, both with heart and lungs removed. (inside joke just to stem off the cackles from the Peanut Gallery, lol) I used my 300WSM rifle with 165gr bullets. The first doe was about 100 yards, the second one was about 160. Both were one shot kills....

  24. I highly recommend getting a single piece flagpole vs a telescoping or sectional pole. The telescoping poles are nice there's no rope/halyard to worry about but if left up in high winds they will link and be difficult to raise or collapse. Also over time the locking mechanism gives way and need to be replaced. The the price difference between a 25' telescoping pole and a 25' single piece pole is about $50. The single piece pole has a life time warranty on the shaft. You can get a single piece 25' residential pole with a 3" butt diameter and tapers to 2" at the top or 4" butt diameter and tapers to 3" at the top. Personally I would go with the 4" diameter pole. The 30' pole is 30x4". They are very easy to install not much different than doing a fence post and they weigh less than 75# you can stand them up with one hand.

  28. Real trees smell good, help the local economy, and can provide habitat for smaller animals and birds after being used, composted, or can be used for bonfires as mentioned. Most importantly they carry tradition, provide income for growers, and are made in the USA. Fake trees are just that...FAKE made in some foreign country who don't give a rats behind about x-mas. So what if they come with fake "frosted snow tipped branches". To each their own but no "fake trees" here.

  33. So I was in the stand by 6:45 this morning, there was about 5 inches of snow on the ground so no need for a flashlight which was nice. I started seeing movement about 7:15 about 100 yards below me, a few does moving into a stand of mature pines, then a few more. I have seen virtually nothing since opening day of gun so I was feeling good about this. A few does here and there meandering though the creek bottom kept my attention for the next half hour or so. Out of the corner of my eye I catch a big doe trotting up the hill to my left, I have no idea how she got there, or where she came from, then I see a deer behind her and put my scope on it, its a buck!. I see the rack and move the crosshairs to the shoulder and let 'er rip. It looked like he dropped, I think... The doe is standing 75 yards to my left, unalarmed, looking over her shoulder at where the buck was. I put the scope on her but decide not to shoot. I sit tight for a few minutes while she feeds her way up the hill a bit more. I climb down and find the buck right where he was standing. I recognized this buck as the one we called the "the crab claw buck" I have pics of him 30 yards from where I shot him. He broke off half of his split G4 (?) on his right side since the last video/pics. Really cool buck. It was quite a job getting him dressed, out of the woods and into the truck alone. I have never really cared how much a deer weighs, but I just may go grab a scale, this one seems very heavy! I also found two beds in the snow within yards of him, I am wondering if he wasn't bedded with that doe only 75 yards from me and I never saw them?

  34. It's a real tree here. We've been going to the same tree farm in Warsaw since my youngest was probably 6, he's 38 now! My wife puts white lights inside near the trunk and colored lights on the branches, says she likes the way it makes the tree glisten. I really like the way my wife decorates the fireplace mantle. It looks even better with the fire going but not until she's done as it's too hot!
