  4. My best friend calls me and says lets go to the cabin for 3-4 days. I was like you sure, yup ready to go. He asks if its still deer season and I tell him muzzleloader season. So I'll get to hunt a few more days eat and drink like a king. Gotta love friends! lol

  5. Processed up some more here at home. Did send out 20lbs of ground not in the picture to an Italian deli to get turned into sausage. Its great doing your own despite its a lot of work. Tri-tip, brisket, top round, tenderloins, NY strip, ribeye, chuck.... you name it you can do it how you want it. Sent from my SM-G781V using Tapatalk

  7. Official GTG today. Did some serious walking today trying to get the herd on their feet. Got them moving just not the way we needed them too. Thankfully I had a solid crew in the woods with me. Only deer I could have shot was a nice 2.5yr old buck at about 8 paces. Great time gentlemen.@moog5050@turkeyfeathers@The_Real_TCIII Sent from my LM-V405 using Tapatalk

  8. I'll be honest, I'm shocked you still have access. He's family and it sounds like only a matter of time before he decides he wants to hunt it alone. Be thankful for the years you had hunting there and move on.

  9. For whatever reason, our hearts pull us in one direction or another at times. I have only been hunting 9 years and this year I killed the fewest deer ever - 2. Not because of lack of opportunity. I still get a kick when I finally see a big buck, but I had no desire to shoot a doe and passed every one I saw this year. Two bucks are plenty of meat for us. Does that mean next year I won't shoot a doe? Not necessarily, but my years of filling all 7 tags are likely done. To each his own and do whatever makes you happy within legal and ethical boundaries. And I certainly wouldn't feel like a sissy because I felt bad about shooting one. You are taking a life.

  10. Third sit in a row from my tower seeing nada, except some turkeys.......Maybe the deer don't like my wheat anymore.... Hunting tomorrow afternoon from the ground with a handicapped friend who cannot climb the stairs to the tower...We'll be hunting the far end of the plot which I cannot see from my tower, from the ground...Hope something comes out..He hasn't had a chance to hunt much this year and would be pleased to shoot even a fawn.... 11. Sounds like I waited until the optimal time to start hunting. You guys don’t make hunting of yesteryear to sound all that fun. Imagine only 3 stations on my blind TV. That would stink.

  12. Well no buck. Coyotes beat me to his bed and not by much. Maybe an 1hr at most. Ended up walking 2miles took a little bit to find the track. Maybe 3 fingers wide I've seen bigger. He was with a fawn and doe based on the other tracks. I found 3 beds on a ridge but I didn't jump them. I could see where they got up and were feeding away. Well that buck took me right back to the same spot as the last time. I hung put for a couple minutes did a couple soft grunts and scrapes the ground. Then I went in after him. Slowly made my way to a spot I could cut him off if he was in there and wanted to escape leaving his track in the process. Well when i got to my spot i noticed running tracks a couple yards away. So I went to look and it was what I believed to be his track. So I followed it to the open woods where I just came from and thats when I noticed 4 different sets of coyote tracks running behind him. I called the track there. As long as the coyotes dont get him I know where to find him next year. 1st picture is his second bed I back tracked his running tracks to make sure he was bedded in there. The last photo the white pine in the back is right where his bed is. Other picture is of a stream on my walk out and a screen shot of my walk. Hes bedding in the little clearing by the pond on the bottom left

  13. When i started hunting i killed a fawn i was didtraught, the leader of the camp we called gramps was in his late 70s looked at me and said its bigger than a rabbit and you hunt those so why would it bother you? He also gave great wisdom in saying if you can shoot it again than do so ,better to lose 5 lbs of meat than the entire deer with a bragging right of one shot kill. If it gives you a second shot take it! No need to be a hero, get the deer 1st and foremost.

  15. I went thru the same thing. I myself went to only killing mature deer. I make it a point to find 2-3 bucks worthy of shooting and then hunt those deer. Trust me. You will lose a hell of a lot more then you will ever win but when you do get the chance to pull the trigger you will smile because you know you earned it against a beast that has also beaten you a few times. Go back to Hunting......Not just Shooting because you have a tag and it may have some kind of bone in it’s head. Make it Worthy. Anybody can kill the dumbest deer in the woods in The fall. A Yearling whitetail.

  16. I'm with you on this. I let multiple opportunities to shoot small bucks pass without a shred of regret this year. Don't get me wrong; I don't fall in the only shoot big rack deer crew, I just didn't feel it enough to shoot. Then when it came to filling doe tags I have been passing there as well for one reason or the other. I have always been unable to bring myself to shoot a doe with fawns. This season I had two heathy fawns being followed by their big, fat momma into an orchard about 30 yards in front of me. The fawns decided they wanted to wander off and passed me within feet from my tree. After a few minutes momma walks out and with her ears out stretched to the side listening for where they went, raised her nose in the air to try and smell them, and then clearly looking for them had an expression of concern in her gaze, as she put her head down and hurried in the direction they went, grunting out to them with almost every step. She was a nice big doe to fill a tag with, but I just couldn't bring myself to shoot her when I saw what a good mother she was being looking after her fawns. I think just watching the show was enough for me, and to shoot her would have ruined the experience. Headed up to my stand now for the last couple hours today. Maybe today will be the day. : )

  17. I wound up with a little bit of "birthday money" and decided I was going to treat myself to a new knife. After shopping around online a little bit last night, I came across what looked like a pretty good deal on a Case Folding Hunter at TSC. They even had it at my local store. I placed the order for curbside, and went to pick it up this morning. When they brought it out, all they had was the knife, no box, paperwork or sheath (which it was supposed to come with). I went ahead and took it and when I got home I called their customer service and explained what happened. Long story short, they called the store, which was totally uncooperative. So, customer service issued me a gift card worth almost what I paid for the knife (short by $4) and told me to keep the one I purchased. So, I ended up buying another nice LE bone Trapper online with the gift card. All in all, I came out pretty well on the deal. Here's a photo of the Folding Hunter, way bigger than anything I carry (my Case Cheetah is there for scale) but a really nice knife all the same.

  20. I can relate. But that feeling even crossing your mind means your head is in the right place. Too many hunters have zero remorse (or respect) for the animals and it makes me angry. Wounding deer and non chalantly shrugging it off really gets to me. I feel "bad" every time I kill one. But I combat that with quick kills, salvaging all of the meat I can etc... It's not all about the meat although it's my top priority next to age class of the deer I kill. It would be a lot easier and way cheaper to buy my meat but I also think that being the necessary part of the process (the killing) puts your perspective right. Noone should take killing anything lightly. Deer feel pain, like we do. I don't want to be the cause of tremendous pain to anything. I only hope that my own death is in some way a reflection of what I strive for in the woods, a quick, humane death. I've seen some gruesome hits on deer only to find them the next day still alive and can't help but imagine what that animal went through. I also think the longer you hunt and the more kills you have the lust of killing fades and you appreciate just observing and enjoying the world around you as you see your own demise growing closer. My father was big into hunting when I was young, hence why I am even more so than he was. But the last few years he has refrained from pulling the trigger on much of anything. The reality of death sets in differently the closer you get. I'm only 35 and can see myself changing already, I may even quit hunting one day in the future. Who knows? If it happens then so be it, I've made a lifetime of memories already to look back on... Sent from my moto g(6) using Tapatalk

  21. Yes, there's more deer now. Large tracks of land that were undeveloped 50 yrs ago and accessible, now are developments or anti hunters own and don't allow hunting. Combine lack of access and lower numbers of hunters and the deers ability to adapt to the changing landscape, heard numbers increased.

  23. At the risk of sounding like a sissy, I'm going to put this out there. I killed a small buck this morning. I'm not feeling too good about it. It went ok, and it was a fast kill, but I'm just not sure how I feel about it anymore. He was just happily eating acorns, and doing his thing, when I shot him. It was a beautiful snowy morning, and I was blessed to share the woods with the deer. Almost felt like I ruined it by shooting. The older I get, the less I have the stomach for killing game. Anyone else here have trouble pulling the trigger, or a ton of remorse after? Thinking about just buying a really nice camera for next year.

  24. One of the guys brought his kids to deer camp this year. He said that's all they talk about. They can't wait to go back. We already set a weekend aside in January to head to camp just to drink, eat, and relax. So looking forward to it!

  25. Just watched the dec live question and answer on. The new management plan. The holliday deer hunt is past the point to allow it to take place this year. They are reviewing the thousands of commets recieved still. But it is still part of their management goal in future... so it is a NO GO FOR 2020-2021 SEASON , but may happen for 21-22 season...

  26. Rob, there’s not much in this photo ( and many other spots not in it ) we didn’t drive , along with everyone else in the area ,deer were running all day . I had 4 guys , Ron behind me 6-8 we teamed up each morning . Today much is off limits and much of the best spots the farmers have turned into fields , which I understand . Today I have one other guy sometimes and Ron , well it’s just him nowadays . Sitting is great for bow , but boring as hell in gun .

  27. My Dads total hunting “ gear” could fit in one coat pocket . His boots were those non insulated green rubber boots with yellow laces , a green upland coat with an orange vest , a red hat and green wool gloves . I started with the same boots , but we put bread wrappers over our feet to make them waterproof . We sat freezing till 9, sweated our ass off driving miles of farmland till 3 or so, then sat freezing till dark . When I’m an old fool ( insert joke here ) talking about the past days of hunting , it won’t be stories like this ... ” Why I could sit in a blind from dark to dark, went trough two green propane tanks and drained my phone battery ! “

  35. As others have said used to be way more hunters, back 34 years ago when I started at 16 ( the legal age one could big game hunt ) I remember 10-15 guys at my uncles hunting camp opening day. My uncles owned 100 acres in the valley but we had permission to hunt the entire valley so maybe 1000 acres total . We sat in the morning and did drives in the afternoon . I remember this one day during opening week I think was 17or 18 at the time and after our 9 o’clock coffee break that we always took. I remember walking out the camp door and seeing a solid line of guys putting on a drive in this 100-150 acre field on a side hill 2 valleys over. There had to have been 30-40 guys in a line driving this golden rod field, who knows how many watchers they had. But I do remember hearing all the gun shots going off in the distance as we were walking to put on our own drive . One doesn’t see those things now a days or have the land access to do it.

  37. That's definitely a tough situation. You are ultimately commenting on how he legally hunts his family land. The best advice I can give is to continue having an open line of communication with him, and keep things civil. If he is doing something illegal, you can certainly call him on it, but know that it could affect the relationship and hunting access. I believe it's legal to sell a bluegill though

  38. Find new land. Train is headed into Drama central station. This is common and you have to make your own decisions on how you want to pursue legally. I eat 4 deer a year easily and also give 2 deer a year to my uncle and great uncle who can no longer hunt. Not every one is all good or all bad.

  39. This day needs to get over with. Snows soft and I'm itching to do some tracking this morning. I really want to say I would pass up a smaller buck because I know a big one is in the area I'm going. However any legal buck I can get on from here on out I'm shooting at if possible. Good luck to all those still grinding it out. Still 2 weeks left to get it done.
