  1. I haven't been out in 2 weeks and my wife was able to work from home for a couple of hours this morning that meant I could hunt until 10 and get home to the kids. I forgot to set my alarm last night. I got up at 630 and said screw it I'll be hunting Sunday. 645 I changed my mind showered and was in the stand at 745. At 9 am a button buck steps out at 20 yards feeding. The whole time the little one is feeding I can make out the ears of another deer 70 yards at in the brush but it won't come out. After 25 min the little one walks off 10 min later I look over where the other deer was in the brush and I can see a big doe staring at me behind some brush . I put the cross hairs behind her shoulder and in the cloud of smoke I can she her trotting off. She went all of 60 yards and piled up. Double lung shot. I'll have this one butchered and surprise my grandma with the meat.

  5. I'm in agreeance with the poking the bear. You're poking it. Stop or understand the risk if you continue. Treeguy is 100% right. Better yet, do something about your passion to reduce the drama. Working angles sounds like a half-assed solution to me. You have means. Make it a priority to give you what you need out of the passion. You've commented here alot (my perception) this year of not getting out or staying up late due to wine and this/that the other (at least say lie and say whiskey on this site for Pete's sake). But, then this is what bothers you? If that's really driving you not getting out as much, go change it man. You're smarter than this, I know that for sure. I remember you posting about this guy a couple years ago. You've had lead time to have a Plan A, Plan B, Plan C. Just calling it like I see it - opinion.

  6. Spending the day down in 9P near Rattlesnake Hill. Buddy already has a buck down as a herd of 8 snuck by in a ravine. Big woods hunting is always fun.

  7. Just settled in now let’s see some late rut activity this morning. Cameras show some small dink bux chasing does and fawns this week perhaps they draw shooter in for my son to get chance at.

  8. After holding out all season for two special bucks, I'm going to try and fill some tags this weekend. My partner will do some small pushes to me tomorrow. This has produced some decent bucks in the past for us. Sunday, we will both push to his daughter. Not sure if I'll be able to hunt again after this weekend, with work and family obligations. But if I do, it would be with my bow in the Pine Bush. So last hunts on the farm this year. Will do some predator hunting after the holidays. Been a long time since I didn't get a deer. But I'm good if it happens. I truly gave getting one of those two bucks my best shot. And wouldn't change a thing if the season were to start tomorrow! Was an honor to hunt those monarchs of the woods.

  9. There are still a big 7 pointer, 8, and 10 pointer in my woods, who are all coming around almost every single night. The 10 pointer even left a fresh rub a few nights ago. Even if I never get a chance to see them during the day, at least I know that nobody else got them either...

  14. Main goal was to get a Christmas Tree. Along the way I saw 5 does and I cut a bear track. No mature bucks on my cameras.

  15. I'm trying to restore deer camp in our life. When bucks were scared doe tags came with 4 signatures and Genesee beer filled the recycling can. I remember skipping the first day of school and waiting for my family to return at lunch to hear the stories of the biggest bucks killed. Never ending good food and talk about the one that got away. Most of my inspiration to hunt came from the opening week hunting camp adventures. Truck scouting in the evenings and watching big cruising bucks run around and never breaking a law just enjoying the time together. After my father died I put his racks on my shop wall. These are the adventures that helped shape my desire to be a hunter.

  16. Hit some public land yesterday. Lots of fresh tracks in the snow but they all lead to private land. Followed some Bobcat tracks until it jump across a creek. Thought that was cool! Didn't actually see any deer though Sent from my SM-G975U using Tapatalk

  17. I was out for the last hour in 3S and had quite an eventful sit. Bumped the mama and 2 fawns on my quick walk in which I expected. Last time I was there mama was off making more babies as her fawns were alone. These three are such homebodies that I intentionally pushed them towards a neighboring house, hoping they would circle back when they ran out of room. I then went back a found a tree over their beds. With 10 minutes of legal left a red fox came through and then I see a doe flying down the mountain followed by another doe. Not sure what kicked them. Both stayed in the ravine and never came up my way. The three I kicked did indeed circle back but well “high” of my tree and were happily feeding in a field behind a work shed (75 yards from my car!) when I walked out. Good to see some action Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  19. I have been very fortunate in the meat department but I never want to stop hunting. The Tompkins County doe management zone never let's us down. Collectively 10 of us have filled the meat bank. We did resort to lots of drives and I feel like that blows the bucks out. Ill be leaving the lease now probably for the rest of season. Bone chaser for 2 tags, now that you guys have straitened me out with the facts Ill be hiking biggest ridges furthest from human pressure. May be ill be celebrating some bones with a couple white claws.

  25. Took 2006 or 7 off after I came back from a month long trip in September and was plain hunted out for the year. Missed 2019 with medical issues on and off again during that fall. This year I was hiking in Catskills and cut a big track and spent a few hours working it. Bumped a nice buck with a doe and made a 1 mile loop to get the wind right and glassed them again in a bowl in rifle range. No gun and couldn't careless if I shot him. Just having fun. No remorse issue, just dont have the mojo at the moment. Actually have a cape buffalo hunt planned next fall and super excited for that trip. Have had as much fun with a camera as rifle, do what makes you happy.

  30. I had one lay down next to its mother after I shot her,. Stood there until I climbed out of my tree and walked towards them. Then he walked back a couple of times before finally taking off after I threw a stick at him. Nothing against guys that do, but I won't shoot a doe with a fawn after that. I know the fawn can survive, but I just felt like crap inside.

  32. Honestly it's bitter sweet. Stinks its over but it's also a welcome break as I have been going at it since October 1st. It's one of the reasons why I don't do the late season. After this weekend it's time to shift focus back onto the family and celebrating Christmas.

  33. First, i agree with everyone that says there really isn't anything you can do about it other than maybe ruin your chances of hunting so tread lightly. Second, I am assuming this person is younger. People go through stages in life as they get older. 15 years ago, i would have gladly killed a spike horn or any other deer i had a tag for, and I would have no patience if i didn't see deer. Now i am just happy being out in the woods. As you get older, you enjoy the things about hunting that you didn't pay attention too when you were younger. Watching the squirrels, the sunrise or set, the woods wake up etc. I am guessing he will get to that point as well so mentor him and hang in there. Maybe 5 years from now it will be a great relationship.....

  34. Sounds good in theory but doesn’t really work in real life. If neighbors son in law wants to fill tags he’s paid for and shooting deer you’d like to kill it’s tough shit for you. What he does with them isn’t any of yours or anyone else’s business. Your question was how would we handle it and like I said I would try to buy if it’s not for sale I would stay on your fathers piece and not worry about what the neighbors do. I’ve lost more properties than I can remember, there was a time 15 years ago when I could hunt my entire 2000 acre block. Now I’m down to about 600 acres of it. I’ve let 18 bucks go this year in that block and I would be shocked if 4 of those 18 are still alive. I used to let it bother me but I have zero control over it and I no longer care. 42. Personally I hate people filling tags to fill them. I only shoot 2-3 deer a year because that's the only meat my wife and I need. Could I fill every tag? Probably. I, like you, am also turned off by people giving out deer to a bunch of people. Just because you have the tags doesn't mean they should/need to all be filled. I'm the same way with fish too. I'll hook someone up on occasion but in my opinion if we all started taking way more than we need and start shooting 2-3 extra deer every season to hand out we'd be in rough shape hunting wise. This guy in particular sounds like he just likes to shoot deer and the added bonus of looking like a great white hunter to all of the "needy" people. Legal, illegal, moral, ethical? I don't know, but I don't like it at all. Sent from my moto g(6) using Tapatalk

  43. Guns? Post them here in the classifieds with good pictures, let us know what your looking for in US dollars and your location. They can be shipped (if long guns) by you through the USPS to the buyers FFL of choice AFTER you get a copy of said FFL's official looking paper work. If selling in person, find an FFL that you & the buyer can meet at and make your deal, the FFL will complete the transfer.

  46. A lot has happened since last update. A few Field to Fork mentee alumni from last year have taken deer this season. Hany I believe his first buck with his compound. Jimmy took his first deer ever with a crossbow. Sandra took a doe in early muzzleloader season and her first buck during rifle season. Also technically not part of the program as he's a youth junior hunter, but Matt took a spike horn for his first deer at age 15. Pics below. Still many mentees yet to get deer this season.
