  3. Out for the final sit of the year. My oldest son and I walked in just after sunrise, bumped 5 or 6 near the first stand. I’m really thankful to have had such a great season and to be able to spend it with my boys. I lost my Dad 25 years ago today, there’s no better place to sit and reflect on all he taught me. It’s funny how when I’m in the stand he always seems to be with me even to this day. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  5. Well, I'm on the the board. Got a nice sized doe. I was sitting in my hunting buddy's stand in West Valley, just a few miles south of Springville. Behind me to my right I hear leaves crunching, then more leaves crunching, then I hear the crunching moving away from me. I slowly turn my head and look. About 33 yards away are a group of four doe. The last one saw me move. She was looking at me, bobbing her head up and down trying to make me out. Then she starts to walk away. Fearing the others would then follow her, I figure it's now or never. I slowly swing my gun around to my 4 o'clock, and shoot the first doe that gives me a shot. I shoot, and all four run away. I was apoplectic. How could I have missed? Texted my hunting buddy, he said don't get down from the stand. Wait, I'll be there in 10 minutes. He comes, I guide him to where I shot. He immediately finds blood. I get down and join the track. I wish I would have taken a picture. It wasn't a blood trail, it was a red carpet about 16" wide and 50 yards long. It turned out to be a classic double lung shot. Amazed it ran as far as it did. The terrain was very hilly with a small ravine and waterfall. We found it just before it would have gone down the ravine and into the creek. He helped me with the drag back; it was an ordeal. The terrain was like a mini version of Ithaca. Very thankful for the help I got in getting it done.

  10. That was odd I thought I had missed him somehow. It was only a 50yrd shot but after the shot he took off but did not show any signs of being hurt. When I got down and went to where I shot there was not a drop of blood in the snow. Followed his tracks with no blood. Hit him right behind the shoulder and no blood till I found him. Usually deer I've shot with a muzzleloader leave quite a blood trail. Sent from my XT1650 using Tapatalk

  11. After holding out all season for two special bucks, I'm going to try and fill some tags this weekend. My partner will do some small pushes to me tomorrow. This has produced some decent bucks in the past for us. Sunday, we will both push to his daughter. Not sure if I'll be able to hunt again after this weekend, with work and family obligations. But if I do, it would be with my bow in the Pine Bush. So last hunts on the farm this year. Will do some predator hunting after the holidays. Been a long time since I didn't get a deer. But I'm good if it happens. I truly gave getting one of those two bucks my best shot. And wouldn't change a thing if the season were to start tomorrow! Was an honor to hunt those monarchs of the woods.

  12. After two weeks of waiting finally got the right wind to go after my #1 target. Siting between picked corn and wheat, surrounded by creek bottom. This property has only been hunted once during gun and a couple times during bow so typically has really good day time movement. I spent the last week dropping five does to keep my farmer happy so horns or nothing tonight. Good luck to all those still out trying to punch tags! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  13. No long sits today. Just short ones, while my buddy pushes some cover. Our two man loops have been very successful in the past. A benefit of decades hunting together. And on the same property. Good luck to all heading out.

  14. Well move went well, I threw my back out 10 minutes into helping the movers ( shitty dang deal). Im so fortunate my 12 yr old stepped up and helped big time! I’m currently knee deep in whiskey to help loosen my muscles:-) Tomorrow’s a no go as hopefully I can get around. Cleaning old house up and setting up Xmas tree in our new home. Sunday back willing were gonna make it happen!

  16. Well, this is a tough one to write. I took a different path in from my evening sit tonite and came across the deer I thought I missed a week ago. Tears me up to have wasted the meat on such a nice buck but at least I know that I didn’t wound him or miss completely. Shot right thru the shoulder. No hair, no blood anywhere when I was searching. I walked within ten yards of him a couple of times while searching. This is a very large bodied deer. The rack looks small on such a big body. Coyotes got the hind end. I’ll take the head for a euro mount tomorrow and do an autopsy. Disgusted that I lost him, relieved that I didn’t miss.

  17. Maybe more are being mentioned because the forum as a group doesn’t bash someone for a miss or a bad hit. I’d say 90% of us support the individual and try to pick there spirits back up and re-tell our own stories of mistakes. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  20. I'm trying to restore deer camp in our life. When bucks were scared doe tags came with 4 signatures and Genesee beer filled the recycling can. I remember skipping the first day of school and waiting for my family to return at lunch to hear the stories of the biggest bucks killed. Never ending good food and talk about the one that got away. Most of my inspiration to hunt came from the opening week hunting camp adventures. Truck scouting in the evenings and watching big cruising bucks run around and never breaking a law just enjoying the time together. After my father died I put his racks on my shop wall. These are the adventures that helped shape my desire to be a hunter.

  21. Greetings all, As the 2020 big woods season wraps up for another year I wish everyone has a blessed and safe holiday season. 2020 has brought forth many challenges for the world and I hope that changes in the upcoming new year. I did not harvest a deer this season and still feel very blessed that I had time to spend in the big woods up North. I had Thanksgiving week alone at my off grid camp and enjoyed the experience greatly. I hope you all came away from this season with good memories and shared experiences. The weather in the big woods was a challenge this fall with wildly varying temperatures and ultimately a lack of snow for tracking other than a few select mornings. Warm holiday wishes, Dan

  24. Last night had some beers with friends at their house. They had a fire too. Sloop Juice Bombs were fillers. Other Half - Go With The Flow. Had a couple from@turkeyfeathers... Mortalis Corymbus triple IPA the was smooth and dangerously drinkable. Mortalis ichabod golden stout that seemed like it had hints of cocoa and Carmel. Definitely didn't expect it from the Golden color. One friend broke out a 2018 Goose Island Bourbon County Vanilla Stout....that smell seriously took me mentally back to my grandparent's dairy farm feeding out haylage with molasses. It was delicious too though. (That beer in the pic, nebrmind mind the Surly brewing glass) Sent from my SM-G781V using Tapatalk

  26. Having a leisurely breakfast this morning when two shots go off from the back edge of my property where a buddy was hunting. A half hour later I text him to see what the story was and he had shot a doe but needed help tracking. Long story short, a half mile track and we finally caught up with her and made the kill shot. Helped drag her in and then went out to tag and take the head from the buck I shot a week ago and found last night. Nice nine point that wil make a nice euro mount. Back in the stand for the evening watch and the group leading the land behind mine are putting on a drive. Sounds like lots of people in it so I’m sitting on a sneak lane that leads off of their land onto mine. Could be fun!

  29. I’m in the Buckform my tower blind at one end of my field it’s actually pretty easy to reach out touch those deer with rifle Yeah ground blind is sitting on edge of food plot. They often come out right around it. It’s great for bow MZ but for rifle I have come to learn to stay back out of field edge blinds and stands. If you give them enough food ...Over time the herd bed off the edge of the field either side in the thick stuff and if you low-pressure them they hang tight. Eventually some go into heat and draw the boys. perhaps this afternoon will get some action me hopes

  34. I have been very fortunate in the meat department but I never want to stop hunting. The Tompkins County doe management zone never let's us down. Collectively 10 of us have filled the meat bank. We did resort to lots of drives and I feel like that blows the bucks out. Ill be leaving the lease now probably for the rest of season. Bone chaser for 2 tags, now that you guys have straitened me out with the facts Ill be hiking biggest ridges furthest from human pressure. May be ill be celebrating some bones with a couple white claws.

  37. Even 22 ammo was rationed this year, of you could find it. BBs were still available though. I modified my daughters Red-Ryder for practice, matching the draw length of my Marlin 336BL. I just need to figure out a way to double its weight. I practice with it off the porch, cutting beer cans in half.

I had previously changed the plug Nov 6 , 2018 . For $3 , I might change it every year just to be safe . Going to do just a morning hunting / sit tomorrow .
