  2. My father bought me this Hawken 25 years ago, I had never connected with it and after a few years I bought a modern inline ML and put it away. I'm really thrilled to finally take a deer with it! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

  3. Wifes new hunting shack finally done . Only a month late but its done . Had to park it at my uncles place as it's to wet to get it up on my property now. Hopefully when it freezes I can get it back on the trailer and up the hill. Heavey cuss. Probably 800 lbs . Amish made .

  4. Sitting in a tree is nice in bow , as there’s generally lots of close in action , but it’s boring as F in gun , and I don’t feel like a hunter . We used to drive and push everything in gun , it was awesome ,we knew where they were and where they would run to , almost to the tree . Walked hours , total team effort . But much of the close drives are gone either cleared for bigger fields or now off limits , then the farm now frowns on drives as well . Today we pushed a few things ,three of us two does dropped and more passed . I put a stick in a lane where I wanted Dennis to stand , he dropped one at 30 yards ..... tell me that’s not hunting ! Stand here and in ten minutes you’ll kill one . It actually felt like we were hunting today , instead of sitting and playing with a phone . Zzzzzzz..... I used to call myself “ ditch walker “ I’d walk brushy drainage ditch’s for hours and sooner or later one would jump up , then how fast are you getting on it and letting slugs fly ! My favorite hunt was 16 years ago my daughter was 14 and I had her walk a over grown ditch , and she pushed a nice 7 ( broken brow ) out i shot him on a dead run at 75 yards .little buck ,14 inch spread, hunt of a lifetime ! Best hunt ever !

  5. It's been a strange season for sure. I passed a number of small bucks and does with fawns, had a clean miss on a nice buck that was farther than I thought. And, played cat and mouse for days with a BIG bodied, wide rack 6 point. I got within 50- 60 yards of him several times but he always busted me. lol. The big buck I missed, the next day I accidentally bumped him into my neighbors after legal shooting time on my way back to the house and I believe they shot him. I won't get into that now because it still makes me mad and nothing I can do about it anyway. Today I saw nothing in the morning, and had decided I would take whatever buck came my way or a mature doe if she was alone. Then in the afternoon I got a later start than I wanted because longtime friend/neighbor who I have not seen in years saw me in the yard and pulled in to talk. Because I was not going to get on stand until 2pm after our talk, I figured I would finish my season in comfort, deer or not. I settled into the middle of the same brushy island I shot my buck over last year. Rather than finish the season perched in the ladder stand, I plunked myself down in an old fold up lawn chair I had stashed in the island years ago. It made for the most comfortable seat I had all season. At 3:45 I caught her coming from the apple orchard bedding area to cross my brushy field, headed for the cut over cornfield on my neighbors property several hundred acres away. The wind was in my favor but she sensed something was off and picked up her pace as she passed me broadside about 50 yards out. I had to practically turn myself around to keep up with her walking but thankfully it was my natural swing direction. When I got my red dot on her and shot I knew I hit her hard, because her whole body recoiled and her rear half of her body went so high in the air I thought she was going to somersault. When her feet hit the ground she exploded out of sight into the brush. I gave her 20 minutes just in case before getting up to look for sign I hit her. There was no hair, no blood that I could see, so I picked one of the several trails that parallel each other going in the same direction she ran and walked slowly. Thankfully, about 60-70 yards was all she covered after the shot so it was an easy recovery, a perfect outcome. I even had my "blue" four wheeler parked in the same Island within eye sight of me and her. The hardest part of the hunt was getting her hung up by myself. So, unless I get out for one day with muzzle loader I guess my season is over for the year. My freezer may not be as full as most years, but my hunting season and memories are plentiful.

  7. With my 3rd deer down I’m hanging it up till October 1st 2021. This year I really felt my age (almost 63). I hunted every weekend in October killed an 8pt on the 24th with my bow. Then had all of November off I killed a big doe with my cross bow on the13th the first time I ever hunted with a cross bow. Then today I killed a nice doe with my 6mm Remington. I’m tired and sore.

  9. Well...was hoping for a nice buck this am....but things dont always work that way. At around 8:10am...I heard a crunch in the snow and looked to my left..and there was a small doe hobbling with no use of her front right leg....i couldn't see any blood or an injury....but my heart told me to harvest her as the coyotes would have a field day with her....so I did Sometimes as stewards we need to make the right decisions and I believe this was a good choice....theres always tomorrow...last day northern tier Good luck boys Sent from my SM-G892A using Tapatalk

  12. Well, I'm on the the board. Got a nice sized doe. I was sitting in my hunting buddy's stand in West Valley, just a few miles south of Springville. Behind me to my right I hear leaves crunching, then more leaves crunching, then I hear the crunching moving away from me. I slowly turn my head and look. About 33 yards away are a group of four doe. The last one saw me move. She was looking at me, bobbing her head up and down trying to make me out. Then she starts to walk away. Fearing the others would then follow her, I figure it's now or never. I slowly swing my gun around to my 4 o'clock, and shoot the first doe that gives me a shot. I shoot, and all four run away. I was apoplectic. How could I have missed? Texted my hunting buddy, he said don't get down from the stand. Wait, I'll be there in 10 minutes. He comes, I guide him to where I shot. He immediately finds blood. I get down and join the track. I wish I would have taken a picture. It wasn't a blood trail, it was a red carpet about 16" wide and 50 yards long. It turned out to be a classic double lung shot. Amazed it ran as far as it did. The terrain was very hilly with a small ravine and waterfall. We found it just before it would have gone down the ravine and into the creek. He helped me with the drag back; it was an ordeal. The terrain was like a mini version of Ithaca. Very thankful for the help I got in getting it done.

  13. Hunt #41 12/12 A gracious offer from Lomax to come out and hunt in the buckform for the afternoon. Went out and it took us less than 12 steps I believe to see the first deer. Lol. Sitting there for a little bit and saw more deer than all of gun season x3. A few deer came out a ways away, a couple ran right by us quick . Then just before dark a small buck came out and then a bunch of does. Picked a good size one in the group and sent it. Deer go running , even towards us. Didn't see one hurt or go down and was thinking OMG I missed. Can't be ...we go out to look for blood and there she is piled up, fell in her tracks . Lol. Guess I got her. Amazing place to hunt and a good time whether we saw deer or not. Good to meet another fellow forum member. Hell we were BSing so much almost missed seeing some of the deer. Lol. Fun day.

  14. With the holidays close and the boys hockey practices today I was gonna go out for a few hrs of hunting at a local spot in the middle of the day today. At 915 I pull up to my spot in East Aurora toss on my boots neck gator grab my backpack. I go to the back seat to grab my muzzle loader where the F is my gun. I call home to make sure that I forgot it in the garage and not in the driveway yup it's in the garage. Back at home changed clothes and off to take my youngest to hockey practice. Here's my sign lol.

  18. Got my deer in the freezer and not planning on doing a lot of muzzle loader or yote hunting this year. Some, but not a lot, depending on the weather. This is when I get serious about winter Grouse hunting. Put in quite a few miles on Grouse in the fall, then stopped for deer hunting. Now that I have my fill of deer hunting, especially since sitting on stand is cold as hell, I want to start hunting Grouse again. Great exercise, beautiful landscapes and I love toting my little 28 ga CZ Ringneck SxS. Besides, nothing is better table fare than Ruffed Grouse. Need to get a few in the freezer. Also want to get one mounted in full flight with the tail spread out to hang on the wall. Been wanting that for years now and hooked up with a new taxidermist that does amazing work for a great price. Any other devotees to the sport of Grouse hunting in the snow here?

  21. Canoed to my ground blind and was just getting situated when I saw a large buck running off...I was still standing and was able to stop him at about 75 yards. He stopped broadside in the open...the shot felt good but unfortunately I only gave him a hair cut...found the sabot. Fun season, got lots of hunting in although I didn’t see many deer after opening week of gun. I had a great archery season and looking forward to getting out with my flinty. Good luck!

While cleaning my wolf 4 or 5 years i broke the weld where the gun breaks open completely my fault. I called cva customer service they told me to keep the old gun and and would send me a new one 3 days later on black friday I received a new gun.

  28. Try tracking deer in good tracking snow. Nothing feels more like hunting then following a fresh track knowing that big buck is in front of you. It takes a lot of knowledge and skill too.

  30. two adult doe. 2.5 yrs old and 4.5-5.5 yrs old (can't recall what I decided on looking at the jawbone as i look at a lot). right at 80 lbs of venison between the two and together 37ish% of total hanging weight with the hide on. ground for burgers i make on the fly without bread crumbs or anything fancy i might not always have, so it's 24lbs of venison to 6lbs bulk bacon ends and pieces. I grind both together with a 10mm plate and 2nd time with a 4.5 mm plate which still has texture and doesn't turn into a dense meat patty if you don't handle it a ton. sausage I had made by a local italian deli but based on weight it was 3:1 venison to pork fat. i brought them plain venison that was ground same way as burger but they grind again to add pork fat and some of the seasonings. they're like a brat size so i'm pretty sure they're hog casings. thinner breakfast sausage typically from sheep casings. not sure of their seasoning recipe. just tried a link in the air fryer. got preoccupied and over cooked it up to 200 degrees and it didn't end up overly dry.
