  1. Well I made two mistakes last night. I went to look at some puppies and I brought my daughter with me...lol. I've had two English Springers before. I love the breed. I wanted a male. What I have never seen before were tri-color Springers. This litter had 10 puppies. 7 liver tri's and 3 black tri's. The tri color really shows up more pronounced on the blacks but both black tri males were already sold. Well this guy was the one that really was the most outgoing in terms of pursuing contact with us. He was the fattest in the litter. Both parents are on site and they were unbelievably friendly even when handling the pups. Mother is a liver tri and father is a black tri. (think color like a Bernese Mountain dog) You can't see it too good on his back but there is white lightening bolt. Since my daughter is a huge Harry Potter fan she immediately commented on how the bolt looks like Harry's scar. So meet Potter, my new hunting buddy. I pick him up on January 27th. Born on Dec 10th. 7 more available guys and gals. This is the third litter for the parents and probably the mother's last. All the previous litters are still healthy.

  3. I am thinking of picking up this blind and donating it to my local NWTF chapter, I think it is a good design for a disabled person in a wheelchair to get into. It does not have the traditional door that most blinds would have but opens like a overhead garage door, I have spent a portion of my life in wheelchairs and feel this would be a much better method of entry for a wheelchair, what do those of you that are disabled, especially those that are in wheelchairs think of this blind entry? Here are dimensions from the site for the blind as that may help with your answer. Thank you in advance. Mesh storage pocket 75" hub-to-hub 57"l. x 57"w. footprint 65" center height 14.5 lbs.

  5. Well, another ones in the books ! A very enjoyable season for me -sort of a respite from all the craziness in the world goin on around us-and hopefully for you as well. In terms of success though , certainly not a good season for me as I ended up empty handed . I did , however , learn a thing or two which, to me , is a success in and of itself ; and hopefully I can build on that for next Year!! Here , in no particular order , are my observations / lessons learned from the 2020 season: 1) NEVER go into the woods during hunting season without your gun!! ( did that a few weeks ago scouting a new area to fill my doe tag and kicked one up; coulda had a decent shot ; not definite but pretty solid : damn!!) 2)Just because you see some sign earlier in the season, doesn’t mean the spot you picked is a good spot!! Consider the big picture before committing to a spot and erecting a stand !! Last year , I erected a ladder stand in a spot on a flat where there were a couple rubs and a scrape . Because of this sign, I erected my ladder stand there . As it turns out ,?this stand location sucked !! Was facing in the wrong direction , was way off any regular trails that deer were actually using and I only ended Up seeing one little doe out of it . Definitely jumped to conclusions on that one !! 3)Give a spot a real chance before you live your stand !! One of the things I kept doing was moving my climber 100 yds this way, then back 100, etc and kept giving up on the area. In the end , I think I raised too much of a ruckus in that area , wasted time adjusting when I should have been hunting and didn’t really give the original spot a Real chance !! 4)Sometimes , an aggressive approach may actually work!! This is speculative in my part , but , the way they disappeared after Thanksgiving , I regret that I didn’t try still hunting more in some spots where I suspected bucks were holding up. At that point , what did I have to lose ? At the very least , may have at least learned something from the experience, and , best case scenario , filled my tag!!!! 5) Be flexible in your approach and attitude , and , be willing to modify and adapt. I am preferentially , an early morning hunter but , as it turns out , the major spot I’d scouted for this season appeared to be more of an afternoon / sunset spot which I am more reluctant to do. In retrospect , with better planning , I Should have Tried that spot in the pm at least a few times . 6)deep / remote spots don’t necessarily equate to “ better” spots in terms of productivity . Some of the area that the guys in my club regularly hunt is much more accessible and closer to the road . I discounted these areas , thinking they would be unproductive due to the Consistent pressure . Although I still feel that is somewhat true, it’s also an oversimplification because I feel that if A parcel of land comprises everything a deer requires , it’s attractive for them to use regardless of pressure . They may go nocturnal as a consequence of the pressure and be much more skiddish , yet , they may also still be there !!! Merry Christmas / Happy Holidays to all , here’s hoping for a better new year all around !!

  6. Jerky is all done, they were pulled off the racks between 17 to 19hrs. Came out great, they have a nice smokey taste, just the right amount of bite, salty with a spicey kick. I know what I'm having for breakfast.

  7. Put a deer in front of some guys and they loose their shit ! My God slow down and think . I had a weird year for sure , driving the last weekend I had an easy shot at large doe ,crossing a ditch at maybe 15 yards, I never shot as the road and a house were 600 feet down range , my shot would have been into the ditch as she crossed a safe shot , but I passed couldn’t risk the low odd of skipping a slug that direction. I Also carry a tourniquet and Combat gauze in my pack . Won’t set foot in the hunting woods without it .

Such a great family dog who would get all business when he saw the blaze vest come out (and all pissed when he saw my bow case!). Smart, tough, patient, loving dog...miss him a bunch Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  13. Looks shouldn't matter. Compound bows don't look like stick/recurve bows. ARs don't look like other rifles, yet they are nothing more than semi auto CF rifle. Modern/inline muzzleloaders (especially those that are smokeless powder capable) do not look like sidelock muzzleloaders. Ranging sights exist for vertical bows too.

  14. i fumble in my pocket, then drop it in the snow, get another, load the pellets, drop the sabot in the snow, wipe it off, push it down with the rod, fumble for the primer cause my hands are frozen and its small and i cant hold it, drop that, get another, $%@%# glasses are fogged, close the gun, realize i lost sight of the deer and go back and get my gloves on the ground later. Its a system.

  15. I stumbled across this post and I’m pretty sure we have the brother to your dog! We picked him up July of 2019 in Cuba! I have to agree; he is the most amazing family dog! He has a mild temperament, only barks if there is a knock, plays great with our kids and loves to cuddle! My sister has one from their first litter and her boyfriend has one from our dog Scout’s litter. They’re such beautiful, well behaved dogs!!

  16. These are from Fred Bear... 1. Don't step on anything you can step over. 2. Don't look for deer; look for movement (and remember, it's what they're looking for, too). 3. Always approach downwind. In the cool of the day, move uphill; in the heat of the day, move downhill. 4. The best camouflage pattern is called, "Sit down and be quiet!" Your grandpa hunted deer in a red plaid coat. Think about that for a second. 5. Take only the gear to the field that allows you to hunt longer, harder, and smarter. 6. A rainstorm isn't a reason to quit the hunt. It's a reason to stay. 7. Camouflage your appearance, your sound and your scent. 8. Be sure of your shot. Nothing is more expensive than regret. 9. Hunt where the deer actually are, not where you'd imagine them to be. 10. Next year's hunt begins the minute this season's hunt ends.

  17. Drop in 2 777 pellets - insert sabot - use ball starter to push down a few inches - then use ram rod to push down until touching pellets - mark ramrod with a Sharpie or score with a knife so you know future loading it’s seeded well and not double stuffed. Do not crush pellets . To unload you can pull breech plug and ram rod out sabot and pellets.

  18. Another vote for a Brittany, both as a hunting dog and a family pet. Sweet, obedient, tenacious in the field, a great overall hunting dog. I would not classify then as a water dog, but they will take to water if trained early. There is a very good breeder in Rochester that has strong hunting lines. I’ve had two of his dogs and love them. They are the perfect “medium” size too.

  19. That's a fairly mixed list and none would be considered small. Bassett is a big dog with little legs. I usually tell people to narrow from size > coat > energy level. That said, if Springers catch your eye you may want to explore them but I would be careful of selecting a dog because of breeder proximity. Look at the Brittany and for something a little more rare, the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever. Good luck.

  21. I'm going to make some sound recommendations to all regarding purchasing canine companions, please take no offense and this is only a recommendation based upon my personal experiences: 1. only purchase from a established reputable breeder, there is a lot of information on-line, talk to their references and people that have actually purchased and hunted or trained their lines of breeding 2. make sure there is a "health guarantee" most breeder guarantee dogs for a year to be free from genetic defects 3. review the lines from both parents and look for any "titles" or certification listed on the pedigree (this show train ability and hunt worthiness) again on-line for clarifications if needed 4. look for health clearances from both parents (hip dysplasia, PRA, canine eye registry or genetic defects (EIC, myopathy) 5. understand that as an owner one is responsible for veterinary exams and follow ups as well if one requests AKC or other titles and to validate health guarantees. You are responsible for such expenses as hip/elbow x-rays or other exams) 6. picking an canine, volumes could be written and I take hours selecting the canine I wish and have waited several years for a certain breeding, simple rule-don't select the puppy that runs to you and grabs your shoe lace, bites or is aggressive in the litter unless you are an experienced handler, this puppy may be dominate in nature and a handful to train; also don't select the puppy that is overly shy and hides away from the others or you, this puppy may be hard to train and condition to loud noises, crowds or gun fire. 7. training- do yourself and your puppy justice and follow through on basic socialization and training, you'll be glad and your family will be proud of your life long family member.... Hope this helps anyone in their decision making... Best of luck, Dan

  22. Hello everyone. I'm a black male that grew up in NYC. I got interested in archery in March and now on the road to hunting. I've completed all the requirements needed for hunting, purchased the license and just got my tags. With so many questions, I wish I new people who hunt that can help me get started. I was just never raised in that environment so this is not a venture I can easily gain knowledge from family or friends. At 40 years old, feels like I'm starting late but this is something I want my son to learn. He's only 3 but I do not want him to grow up thinking that the world will always be as is. As sad as it is, when people become desperate their actions may conflict their morals. COVID19 made me realize that the way of life as we know it, is not promised and with that nature will still provid. I need to be able to provide for my family and neighbors by knowing how to tap into nature's resources. If you do not have these skills, what other options do you have if there is no walmart? During COVID19, I learned how to fish, I'm learning how to grow fruits and veggies, learning first aid, set preparations for survival situations and just generally educating myself. I'm glad to be part of this community and hope I can pass on the lessons I hope to learn here to people who were never afforded the opportunity to harvest an animal to provide for their family.

  26. Just push the bullet down firm against the pellets. Do not crush. A smooth consistent ram rod stroke/ seating pressure is part of a consistetn loading routine which translates to accuracy. Most traditional ML are not designed to remove the breechplug...most inlines though are, and you can certainly pull the plug to remove the load.It is routinely removed to clean the breech, but to be honest how I clean mine I do not remove the breech plug each time. Usually in seating or removing the load from an inline, the pellets are damaged enough that I wouldnt use them again, the projectile probably depends on its condition. Remember that with a ML it is considered unloaded for law enforcement purposes as long as it does not have a cap in/on it (for transportation, etc). No need to pull the load each day when done hunting as long as you arent worried about moisture/snow, rain etc. harming the load.

  35. I checked Basspro Utica in store stock, no XL. Not sure how accurate their inventory system is, I am guessing it sucks based on recent experiences with BPS and Cabelas. It is end of season after all, I will just keep looking at it and get it before next season. I’ve got 10 months! @Pygmy I am sure my wife would have a grand time with you at Truning Stone, I don’t really care for the place, but she likes bingo and the slot machines. Remember what they say about someone else’s wife, no matter how hot......”somewhere there is a husband bitching about her”

  37. The midwest will be calling in November. My hunting partner and I simply waited too long to go past Ohio. It took both of us tagging out early here in NY to spur a no-plan trip and it was epic. I didn't take enough photos. We will be back in the midwest for some scouting and shed hunting in the late winter/spring.

  41. Surprised I didn't see this posted and sorry if it was. Comments accepted until 12/28 https://www.dec.ny.gov/animals/7211.html looks like they're trying to gain full authority to do some stuff they legally can't currently: 1. With respect to deer hunting, statutes should be modified to grant DEC full regulatory authority to: • set deer hunting seasons and regulate methods of take and bag limits in all parts of the state, not just a subset of the state. This would include: o allowing use of firearms to take deer during the regular season and eliminating acreage minimums and special season constraints in Suffolk and Westchester Counties (ECL § 11- 0907), o full authority to regulate crossbow use (ECL § 11-0505), o allowing deer hunting in currently closed areas (e.g., Nassau County and parts of Albany, Erie and Monroe Counties; ECL § 11-0907), o allowing use of firearms to take deer in areas that are currently restricted to bow only; • allow hunters in urban deer control areas to use some techniques that are prohibited under general hunting laws (e.g., bait, lights; ECL § 11-0901); and • set conditions under which hunters can receive some form of compensation for killing deer and can sell venison (ECL § 11-0917). 2. Set uniform minimum hunting age of 12 years. 3. Crossbow Hunting 4. Remove constraints for deer hunters on Long Island. 5. Prohibit wanton waste of harvested game. 6. Remove the prohibition on big game hunting in certain parts of Albany, Erie, Herkimer, and Hamilton Counties: ECL § 11-0907. 7. Allow DEC to regulate buck harvest standards: rescind ECL § 11-0914. 8. Allow Deer Management Permits throughout the Northern Zone. 9. Create tax incentives for landowners to allow public hunting.
