  1. And so the whistle fish was captured...thanks dad! Truly blessed to have a great meaty “11” pointer right down the road from Bizzy’s Un-hunted hole!!! Apologies to Chef...the heart I promised him took this one a little roughly After making a few less than stellar shots it feels great to close the books on 2002 with a Mew Years Eve deer. 2. I had my archery buck scored last night by a local P&Y, B&C and NYBBC official. The final score is 138 2/8".......I'll do the paper work today and send it in for both NYBBC and P&Y. Many aren't into record keeping of their animals and that's fine, it does give a number to those who might have an interest in the mass, tine length and spread. Along with dressed weight and age of the bigger bucks I've killed, the "score" is just another interesting number for those that care. Two other bucks I've shot qualified for NYBBC; one with the ML'r and one with the bow. Many big bucks are spotted on trail cams each year but few are actually killed, where the hell they disappear to each fall is a mystery and exactly what keeps many here going. I'm really not a trophy hunter but have been very fortunate to have killed some great bucks by letting smaller bucks walk and being out there in the woods each fall. I've been know to shoot a dink if the mood strikes me..... I'd be curious to hear about (and see pics of) your officially scored bucks or bears! How about Boone & Crockett animals??

  3. Well it’s “done” Still need to “ramp” one side...we were 2 2x6 short. I recommended using stone as the base layer or at least some pressure treated but was overruled with the proverbial “it will be fine!” No trial run with the ATV but those cedar pines are beasts. 6. Well I made two mistakes last night. I went to look at some puppies and I brought my daughter with me...lol. I've had two English Springers before. I love the breed. I wanted a male. What I have never seen before were tri-color Springers. This litter had 10 puppies. 7 liver tri's and 3 black tri's. The tri color really shows up more pronounced on the blacks but both black tri males were already sold. Well this guy was the one that really was the most outgoing in terms of pursuing contact with us. He was the fattest in the litter. Both parents are on site and they were unbelievably friendly even when handling the pups. Mother is a liver tri and father is a black tri. (think color like a Bernese Mountain dog) You can't see it too good on his back but there is white lightening bolt. Since my daughter is a huge Harry Potter fan she immediately commented on how the bolt looks like Harry's scar. So meet Potter, my new hunting buddy. I pick him up on January 27th. Born on Dec 10th. 7 more available guys and gals. This is the third litter for the parents and probably the mother's last. All the previous litters are still healthy.

  7. This is part of what I sent to the DEC. This is in response to the NY Deer Management Plan. I am generally in favor of the plan. I like the chance to hunt in between Christmas and New Year’s weather I do or not that’s up to my wife. I believe that the Cross Bow hunting should be tied to the archery and not muzzle loader. But to use a cross bow you should have to take the bow hunters course if you haven’t already taken it. We should continue with the Let Them Grow program it seems to be reaping benefits on par or greater than Antler Restrictions without limiting choice

  11. To me that’s 147 2/8 as I think netting is a little silly myself but I haven’t entered either of the bucks I shot that qualify. Congrats on a dandy.

  12. There is no need for a micro chip in the vaccine. We all already "voluntarily" allow ourselves to be tracked via our cell phones, GPS devices in our cars, credit/debit cards, ATMs, EZ Pass, all the security cameras, etc. If you believe the vaccine has a micro chip in it, I know a bridge for sale in NY that includes land that only has B&C bucks on it!

  13. Well kids I’ll give it a final go, a last hoorah, the bottom of the 9th, the Hail Mary, the final countdown and my favorite from my father and our party boat trips...the whistle fish! Enough of the full moon is gone so Ma Nature decided to make it rainy and warm...yeah warm (46 rising to 50!!!). Taking my time getting in this morning and only have till about 10 or so (gotta get the short ribs on for the Eve’s dinner!). No rush, no expectation, no problem! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  14. Congrats, Bob....I had 3 springers over the years and loved every one of them.... My second one flushed and retrieved a limit of woodcock ( limit was 5 then) including a water retrieve when he was 6 months old... Hunting with the same dog a couple of years later, my partner and I dropped two limits of mallards....The dog could not find one that came down on a slant, so after some time we shot another to fill our limit....About that time Doc came out of the swamp with the lost bird, so we walked out with one duck over the limit and hoped that the game warden wasn't waiting on the road...Fortunately, he wasn't...

  15. For the first time I (very roughly) scored some of my old bucks... it was cool to see how they compared to each other. I was thinking in the upcoming hunting drought Ill throw up the pictures of the bucks on the forum then the score. (Gross score of course!!)

  17. I hate NET. why get penalized for extra bone? As a joke, I told Larry he should have chopped off the extra brow/abnormal point and he would have had less gross but more net!

  18. Congrats again, Larry. A true P&Y whitetail in NY is absolutely awesome! To answer your question about other animals, a few below for me: Shot a top 10 in the world bobcat at the time, now it fell back I think. It was measured by SCI since they include Bobcats in their record books. 9 and 10/16, and i boiled the skull and it shrunk, cost me a few spots by 1-2 /16's. Shot a top 20 in the world Lynx at the time, but I think that one fell back as well. Also measured by SCI. 8 and 10/16, this time i had beetles clean it instead of boiling/shrinking Shot a 170 2/8" mule deer , but B&C minimum is 180" typical Shot a 73" antelope, but B&C minimum is 80" Shot a 13" and change mountain lion, but B&C minimum is 14.5" All 3 would have qualified for P&Y books, but I shot them with a gun lol

  19. Last Saturday we reset the entire line. Even though the wax dirt was keeping the traps working the melt and refreeze gave us a crust and we had tracks right on the pans of multiple sets. It was a full day dealing with the ice and we got 5 new set locations covered as well. Monday's check had a Red fox on a scent post in the open field at a crop change. I carried that log out there a couple weeks ago and it was frozen in solid so we reset the trap and added fox urine. On todays check we hit a double on coyotes. Both were dirt holes. Hoping we get some more movement tonight.

  21. I think we passed that point three or four years ago, based mostly on folks voluntarily passing 1.5's. I have not personally harvested an antlered buck, with less than three points on a side, since 2012. The real problem is that too many hunters have too narrow of a focus, thinking it is all about the harvest of big antlered bucks. That "trophy" mindset does not sit well with the non-hunting majority. They are much more supportive with folks hunting for the meat, and even more so, for helping to keep the population under control, reducing auto collisions and landscape/crop damage. Personally, I would like to see NY go to 3 bucks, for those who purchase gun, bow, and ML privledge, and I think the non-hunting public would concur. Bucks cause more car accidents than does, and more landscape damage, especially when it comes to pine trees.

  28. It is. The best buck I saw “in range” was on October 17 - I just shot a second doe and was lowering my bow when he came in. I wasn’t sold that he was the right buck for that property and while a triple would be insane, it would be, well, insane! I did see a few more bucks at my buddy’s place but they were either out of range or young. Today’s spike came from that forest management program (aka-remove all deer so the forest can grow) so all deer must go. Really looking forward to making more sausage and salami; more of my family is enjoying venison so the demand is growing and I just enjoy introducing non-hunters venison. 32. I'm talking top 10 in a state per year, not national rankings, but I bet there's a few high ranking national bucks killed every year that don't see the books too. There's not as much money as you think either. I'm not so sure there's as much "fame" anymore either, with so many bucks being killed in the Midwest states that are over 160". I don't consider anyone who kills a big buck famous, they killed a giant deer, it's cool but not fame worthy to me. It's certainly easier in some areas than others but you didn't invent the lightbulb, you killed a deer. Anyone can catch a 35" walleye too, now if you routinely kill huge deer that everyone has access too I'd consider you a great hunter, but not famous. Sent from my moto g(6) using Tapatalk

  33. Be careful of what you ask for IMO. Giving them more space at the table probably doesn't end well for hunters IMO. I'm perfectly fine with that totally unfair financial support. It's one of the last legs of the table still standing.

  34. I nys wants big bucks the solution is simple. Remove the game department from the dec and make a constitutionl amendment for right to hunt and fish to be managed by a game department. This eliminates all the political and hunter appeasement from game management and leaves it to biologists.

  35. We need a Pittman-Robertson like excise tax on gear used by hikers and birdwatchers or a general permit requirement for accessing state public lands. Hunters are effectively funding the management and care of land and wildlife enjoyed by many. It’s time other recreational outdoors people contributed to the pot

  36. Congrats, you earned it! I can confirm that is NOT the spike I saw twice down the road. So my "herd" lives on! Or are you going back for the PM hunt? A 12/31 Public Land buck pushes you past @The Jerkman for SENY Hunter of the Year in 2020.
