  1. Sometimes we take for granted the little things. Day 11 in the hospital for Ana. She is slowly improving. But was so excited when one of our members and his friend (and friend of a friend) made this happen today! Hoping that we all can be grateful for the moments and little things in 2021. Have a blessed 2021 my brothers and sisters.

  3. This thread is like a run away train (no reflection on anyone's profession!) going off into a ditch........... Thanks to those that have appreciated the buck for what its worth. I think it's pretty cool to recognize the animal and hunter, I doubt I'll ever (or my offspring) see my name in a "book" of any sort other than NYSBBC and P&Y. I ain't famous for shiit; no saved lives, no patents, no inventions, haven't won any races (political, foot or MV) yet and doubt I will. For many years my ambition (maybe that's not the correct word for it?) was to shoot a deer that weighed more than I did. in 2009 I shot with the bow a buck that dressed 217lbs. Live weight put him over my live weight. I never had any ambition of shooting a P&Y buck but am pretty happy I did and get to enter it into their book. Hey, HAPPY NEW YEAR you lugnuts.......my rack of lamb is ready!

  7. It seems like it's time to weigh in with my useless - though not uninformed - opinion. I teach this stuff to medical students. Yeah, I'm a PhD, but one of the smart ones, okay? Lol. Anyway, while I'm fairly sure that this vaccine will end up being safe, and I spent a page explaining why earlier in this thread, I'm not arrogant enough to presume that I can predict the unforeseen consequences (hence "unforeseen") with perfect clarity. Sometimes science gets it wrong. In this case, I'd bet my life on being right, but I won't bet yours. Everyone needs to make up their mind for themselves as to whether they think that the risk is worth the reward. But remember, it's not just a risk to yourself, but to society and to those you love. If you get sick, perhaps without symptoms, and you pass it on, you could impact another life. We still can't predict who is going to have poor outcomes beyond age being the best prognosticator, but it's not a negligible risk, despite what certain pundits might claim. Over 10% mortality in Mexico. Why? Million dollar question. I will take the vaccine when offered it. If you choose not to, peace - but please stay safe and protect yourself and your loved ones. Happy New Year!

  10. I had my archery buck scored last night by a local P&Y, B&C and NYBBC official. The final score is 138 2/8".......I'll do the paper work today and send it in for both NYBBC and P&Y. Many aren't into record keeping of their animals and that's fine, it does give a number to those who might have an interest in the mass, tine length and spread. Along with dressed weight and age of the bigger bucks I've killed, the "score" is just another interesting number for those that care. Two other bucks I've shot qualified for NYBBC; one with the ML'r and one with the bow. Many big bucks are spotted on trail cams each year but few are actually killed, where the hell they disappear to each fall is a mystery and exactly what keeps many here going. I'm really not a trophy hunter but have been very fortunate to have killed some great bucks by letting smaller bucks walk and being out there in the woods each fall. I've been know to shoot a dink if the mood strikes me..... I'd be curious to hear about (and see pics of) your officially scored bucks or bears! How about Boone & Crockett animals??

  11. Decided to sleep instead of wait up for new years so I can go out to a new spot I scouted last week. Got there on time decoys put out and set up about 30 min before shooting light. The bottom of the pond was kind of sticky and the pond was starting to get pretty iced over, but I saw birds there when I scouted so I was optimistic. about 10 min before shooting time, I was thinking it could be any minute I see or hear a duck. Maybe 5 seconds after I hear a quack and hear them landing. They were maybe 10 yards to the left of my decoys, but I didnt shoot. Not going to risk getting in trouble for a couple ducks, so I watched all 10 fly away after they figured it out. Just at shooting time I see a couple ducks start coming in to land to my left. I gave a couple quacks and the turned and came in. I took the first shot I had when they came over head. First shot folded the first bird, but I missed the other duck. Looked like the other was a mallard drake but I really dont know. The one I got was a Black duck drake, so maybe I was just seeing things. A little bit later I saw a couple ducks coming right in to my decoys from down the marsh and they landed perfectly in my decoys. Now I pulled up to shoot before they landed, my gun didnt fire. I must have flicked the magazine shut off, and I guess that stops me from shooting becuase all I heard was a click. The good thing was I never got up so I was still very hidden in the grass, and I was able to rack a new shell and take the shot. So By 6:50 I had my black duck limit for the day. I stayed till 8, but only had black ducks come in and no mallards. I have horrible luck with mallards for some odd reason, but I cant complain with the two ducks I got. All in all I must have seen about 20-30 black ducks for the morning. Considering going tomorrow too, but Im not sure just yet. My waterfowl goal next year is to get finally get a mallard.

  15. I’ll say “not me”. Please explain how you do it........many here would love to hear some of your strategic moves to outwit the bucks. To have your success year in and year out I’d say that your just hunting the same general area each fall and catching those bucks in the same areas. If not that, I don’t know how many trip to camp you take each year but it’d have to be substantial or you’re relying heavily on multiple cell cams. Either way, I’m all ears.

  21. Last Saturday we reset the entire line. Even though the wax dirt was keeping the traps working the melt and refreeze gave us a crust and we had tracks right on the pans of multiple sets. It was a full day dealing with the ice and we got 5 new set locations covered as well. Monday's check had a Red fox on a scent post in the open field at a crop change. I carried that log out there a couple weeks ago and it was frozen in solid so we reset the trap and added fox urine. On todays check we hit a double on coyotes. Both were dirt holes. Hoping we get some more movement tonight.

  22. I find it interesting that people keep repeating that its a 99% survival rate so I won't take the vaccine. I took it cause I don't want to get sick and I want to be able to hug my 83 year old mother and not kill her and I want to go to a store again without a mask. Just because the rate of death is 1,2,3 % that's just one reason. I want to see this go away and don't want to be a part of helping it spread. Also how many people have survived but we're in the hospital and on ventilation or in quarantine. I don't want that either. And I am not concerned about side effects, which I haven't had and all I know that have taken it, haven't had. When infectious disease specialists recommend it , that means more to me than someone spouting unfounded doubts. Well said @knehrke. I agree to let people choose themselves. And hope after a few months most people see it isn't as big risk to take the vaccine than it is to get covid and pass it along to others and allow this way of life to continue.

  23. That said, being 70 years old and having some health issues, I will take the vaccine when it is available to me... If I were 20 years younger and in good health, I might not, but at this point in my life, I believe the odds are more in my favor taking the vaccine...

  24. I learned long ago that seeing a "shooter" on camera will get me excited, but does not mean that I'll see him alive and in range during the season. Like some others on here, i work 50+ hour weeks, have a young family, etc. I'd love to have the time to pursue specific targets, but life doesn't allow me to at this point. For now I'm going to target deer. If they happen to have horns, well that's a bonus.

  25. Back then was no better than today regarding hunter behavior. In fact, it may have been far worse. Even though it was "drop in the mail" reporting versus telephone/online reporting many people just still did not do it. I do not believe check in stations and mailing back unused tags would halt a whole bunch of the taking of illegal bucks either. Unethical & illegal hunter behavior, just like criminal behavior, cannot be changed by legislation, rules, and regulations. Those exist for prosecution/punishment after the fact.

  26. Dual console is far superior in alot of important categories over a tiller. As far as manufacturer, if your looking new, starcraft and lund ( best tin cans on the water ) will be hard to find in your range. I'd really consider 18-20'. Far from "too big" to fish any pond your after and will handle LadyO when you need it to. Lots of trackers on the great lakes, but I think that's price driven. Alumacraft and princecraft are also popular and less expensive than Lund or starcraft. Before you buy, get on some boats that are setup for your style/styles of fishing. Layout of the boat will be more important than the manufacturer. If it's your first bigger boat I would also recommend going used, so if you find you don't like it, or like something more, or want to go bigger, you won't lose your a$$ when it's time to sell. Good luck in your search and keep us posted on what your finding. Sent from my LM-V405 using Tapatalk

  33. Hey Versatile, I like the way you think, but I know that there's an often-spoken opinion at the top that the clarity of the message can trump its accuracy. IMHO, that can turn around and bite us in the keister. I'd rather give people the facts and let them make up their own mind, even if it's not necessarily the outcome that health care professionals would like to see. Unfortunately, sometimes the school of hard knocks is the best source of learning. Every individual in our society wants to make up their own mind, whether they have access to or interest in the resources to make an informed choice or not. Knowing that, I'd opt for transparency every time. Shout the message, let folks work it out on their own. That's why I'm writing this. As for the UK variant and the vaccine, it's impossible to predict whether the mutations might be hitting an antigenic hotspot, but even so your body's response is going to produce a repertoire of antibodies, some of which should - hopefully - still hit the target. Think of it like a shotgun blast. Hopefully, some of the pellets still make the mark, even if that "magic BB" doesn't. The permutations are too complex to predict with any great accuracy, so empirical evidence is required, and there is a chance that it will be less effective. Only time will tell.

  34. That is the same model that I bought new, with a 60 hp Johnson back in 1989. I think the cost then was $ 9k, with a trailer. I also had a 15 Johnson for a kicker on it. I bumped the main power up to a 70, when it was 10 years old, and I just bumped the kicker down to a 5.5 last year. The kicker gets used very rarely, because even the 70 will troll at 1.5, while continuing to charge batteries. I used to do a little back trolling for walleyes on Chataqua and the Allegheny reservoir with the kicker, but these days I usually go for bass, primarily using the bow mount electric. The 70 is all I use when trolling for salmon on the big O, although I don't do much of that the last few years. With just 2 guys on the boat, I could get it up on plane with the 15 hp, but it took a while. It came in handy when we busted a prop on the 60, on a shoal up in the St Lawrence, a long time ago. That kicker is mostly just there as a spare, which thankfully I only needed that one time. I wore the lower unit out on the 60 Johnson, thru the first 10 years, but have had zero problems with 70, over the last 20. I do a careful job with winterization, but that is it as far as maintenance, except maybe 3 or four sets of spark plugs. The 70 still has the original factory fuel filter in it. I have only used ethanol free gas, since it became available, about 10 years ago. The hull has held up ok. I have always stored it inside. It did get a crack down the center of the keel, after about 10 years. I kept it closed with RTV calk, for the next 10 years, then finally had it welded 10 years ago. I get a little water in the bilge, when I run the live well pump, and replacing the plumbing is on my to do list. I replaced the bilge pump with a big automatic one, back in the days of the keel crack, and it has no trouble keeping up with the little plumbing leak that I have now.

  36. Believe it or not, this is our fishing boat. We installed a track system for riggers and rod holders. Cuddly cabin is great for storage. But the IO box can get in the way at times. We only fish Lake O and primarily for trout and salmon. It’s not the most versatile fishing boat for sure but we have hauled our fair share of fish in. Easy clean up with the fiberglass floor.

  37. I have 2 spots I hunt. When using trail cams, I usually have photos of a couple of bucks at each spot I would call targets and use the intel I have to hunt them as smartly as possible. Have I killed a target, yes more than once. Do I hold out if a new buck comes by that gets me excited, nope. Only twice have I targeted a specific buck and killed it ON THE FIRST HUNT going after him. Killing a target or specific buck is neat. Killing one specifically targeted on the first hunt felt great. However, I am always really impressed with folks that can go to new ground they never hunted and figure it out quick enough to kill a mature quickly. There are guys that travel state to state and seem to knock down a beauty at each spot they hunt.

  38. I hate to pop the logic bubble, but this is not that difficult to explain. Imagine you're being chased by a chipmunk and a bear. You outrun the chipmunk because you are faster than the chipmunk. The bear eats your a$$ because you are slower than the bear. You are running the same speed in both cases. If you'd run faster (or paid a bit more attention to your mask), you wouldn't be on the menu. It's all a matter of relative infectiousness and susceptibility when comparing influenza and SARS-CoV2. I'm sure that I don't have to say this, but influenza is the chipmunk and SARS-CoV2 is the bear. Less confused now? Cool. My wife says that my analogy sucks and I should have led with the last part first. But I like the chipmunk and bear, so I'm keeping it this way.

  41. I won't know about the pressure until I get up there. From research ( the web, so I take that as what it is ), the area doesn't get hunted much for turkey. Opening day of the regular deer season last year we drove by the place and it was empty. 5 miles up the road were trucks and cars lined up for a long ways. There's a small lake where I plan to camp so I feel fairly confident there may only be a few people fishing but not hunting. If ice out is over. Late May and I'll only get two hunts up there, Saturday morning and a few hours on Sunday. Which also means I have to make sure I still have a tag. Hoping there isn't still a foot or more of snow on the ground as well. It's been on the bucket list for a while now and weather permitting I'm crossing it off the list. Thank you for the replies.

  45. How is hospital staff not wanting the vaccine a compliance issue as it’s not mandatory or is it mandatory? As management you know how much of the whole hospital staff has been vaccinated and your wife also has this information for her hospital or just doses given out? Also as management make sure in these meetings you spell HIPAA correctly.
