  2. Nothing on the agenda tomorrow, boat ramp is pretty snowed in and I’m tired of driving a couple hours to ice fish so tomorrow I’m going to head in the woods with only the the stuff a carry in my pack when hunting. Probably only stay out for 24hrs. I’ve done this a few times before. It’s never much fun but it’s given me the confidence that I could survive should I get lost or injured when I’m hunting the ADK’s. Anyone else ever done this before? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  6. There have been numerous times when a gobbler responded from hundreds of yards away to soft clucks or yelp that I wouldn't have been able to hear from 50 yards away... I remember one bird in PA that was gobbling down over a steep hayfield a couple of hundred yards from me... I took the rubber band off my Lynch Foolproof, and when I set it down beside me to get situated, the paddle slipped and gave a soft cluck...The bird immediately gobbled and made a beeline up over the field ..I never touched the call again and killed him at 30 yards, standing in the field and looking directly at my position..

  7. One more thing I will add, and most probably know this already... A turkey's sense of hearing & direction are INCREDIBLE. I am convinced that they can hear you 400 yards away, and know within 10 feet of where you are calling from. As a beginner I remember being told about their eyesight, which IS quite good, but their sense of hearing is mind-boggling. Just one man's opinion, of course.

  8. This time of year starts habitat manipulation season. Got out and marked about 80 trees to hinge cut or drop today, got the saws dropped of f to shop for sharpening and tune up, need about 3 more mornings to mark some more trees in various areas to hinge and drop this winter. Marking out what will be planted where in plots this year ,some trail clearing and cutting out a plot edge to enhance natural browse and soft mast available Getting the guys from camp organized for a few cutting weekends so. More gets done than just me cutting on off days. Hope to get about 7 acres thickened up in 3 or 4 weekends. Early spring starts maintanence on equipment so its ready for planting season. What are your winter routines??

  10. The corona virus and COVID19 is a medical issue, not political. That is the simplicity of infectious disease, it does not discriminate along any lines. It infects any and all humans it can. The politicizing of it (like everything) may be the biggest problem for this country in managing it.

  12. Big male last night. Haven’t gotten a weight yet. There was a tuft of grass that we could see in the snow, a male was marking it. He hit it on both sides so we set both sides. That was a week ago and last night he came back to mark it again. Not sure which one he got in first but ended up stepping g in both. No cell cam on this set

  13. Cam checks have been kind of boring post season, but interesting to see what survived season. Got pics of what appears to be a piebald. First time seeing this buck! Interesting that he and a spike appeared to be trailing a group of does that passed by 15min prior.

  17. As soon as I think I have a bird coming to my calls I move 20yds left or right of where I called from. I always try not to call again unless I think I he’s lost interest. Too many times I’ve gotten spotted by birds before I see them. It would be unbelievable to think a turkey can know what tree you were at when you called from a couple hundred yards but I’ve saw it too many times to not be a believer! 19. These pricks in the government used it as a tool against each other from almost day 1 , they did humanity a great injustice by not using this to gather actual data for the next time . Now to cover their asses for screwing off they are expecting the citizens to do what ever they are told to do and not question it.

  22. I will get it when I can for the same reason I wear a seat belt and a helmet and those who don't should do it for the same reason. Because I feel it is the right choice for me. Not because of Andrew Cuomo's opinion, Donald Trump's opinion, my bosses opinion or random internet-people's opinions. If your choice is different than mine then good for you. If you feel that makes me a sheep then good for you too. I won't get all butt-hurt over it because internet people aren't real. If you don't wear your seatbelts and go through the windshield it's no skin off my ass, if you choose not to get any vaccine, whatever your reasons, and get sick, it's no skin off my ass. I might think it was a poor decision but I'm not going to ride you about it because, well, see above. My wife doesn't want it now because she feels it it too new but is willing in the future if it proves to be safe. I would take a vaccine for athletes foot if someone came up with one.

  25. Well I made two mistakes last night. I went to look at some puppies and I brought my daughter with me...lol. I've had two English Springers before. I love the breed. I wanted a male. What I have never seen before were tri-color Springers. This litter had 10 puppies. 7 liver tri's and 3 black tri's. The tri color really shows up more pronounced on the blacks but both black tri males were already sold. Well this guy was the one that really was the most outgoing in terms of pursuing contact with us. He was the fattest in the litter. Both parents are on site and they were unbelievably friendly even when handling the pups. Mother is a liver tri and father is a black tri. (think color like a Bernese Mountain dog) You can't see it too good on his back but there is white lightening bolt. Since my daughter is a huge Harry Potter fan she immediately commented on how the bolt looks like Harry's scar. So meet Potter, my new hunting buddy. I pick him up on January 27th. Born on Dec 10th. 7 more available guys and gals. This is the third litter for the parents and probably the mother's last. All the previous litters are still healthy.

  27. I only used teflon tape once when sighting in my Encore with a new scope . Fired 9-10 shots . I cleaned the barrel every 2 shots by putting a patch over my brush and putting solvent on the back half of the patch. Didn't take the breech plug out until I got home . When I took it out to give the gun the full cleaning , the teflon tape was melted into all the threads. Had to get a wire brush to scrape the plastic out of all the threads . Took me 3 times as long to clean the breech plug than it did to clean the gun . Maybe it would of been ok for 3-4 shots but it sure made a mess with 10 shots . Never had a problem using grease and firing even more shots than 10 .

  39. Well, back to the original question. In the areas I hunt it is much more difficult to get a gobbler to come in from a long distance than it was 30 years ago. Back then as I sat on top of a hill I have seen gobblers with binoculars on an adjacent property that came in on a dead run once they heard my call. (Yes, a box call for long distance.) That just does not happen any more on the properties where I hunt. I can only speculate why that is. Maybe it's coyotes, increased hunting pressure, who knows. Now, as others have said, it's good to know where they generally roost and where they generally want to go. Then soft calling to "steer" them combined with an excellent set up so that you have a shot as soon as he is visible. Also, as far as distance goes, once the trees are leafed out there is a dramatic drop in the distance that you can hear them and they you. I have no experience with "big woods" turkeys, that sounds like a real challenge.

  41. Never tried cbd...too much money in the business for me to take it seriously. But...I have chronic hip pain...arthritis, a number of injuries among them. Most nights if I dont take something for pain - tylenol or naproxen, I am very uncomfortable. My orthopedic doc recommended I try Turmeric. I am amazed at how well it works. It is a natural anti-inflammatory. Since I have been taking it (you take it daily, usually 1000-1500 mg) I am sleeping pain free at night, with no need for night time tylenol or naproxen. You might give that a try.
