  1. Recap : lost both my folks months apart Jan March ‘18. My brother Lee October 19. A SIL not long ago. FIL last week. Crap keeps coming hard. When I was very young roaming the woods of a golf course my Pop was superintendent of and both my brothers worked there I came across a large beech tree with “ I heard an owl call my name “ carved into it. It’s an interesting read that was published in 1967 I believe. Lee said he carved it many years ago. I could still lead you right to that tree. Lee passed October 29. November 2nd I grabbed my climber and headed out for the last few hours of daylight with the bow. It’s sunny and afternoon, I climb up and a barred owl chimes off close , then again. First and only owl I’ve ever heard broad daylight like this. Probably 20 minutes go by and I catch movement. A 4 point buck heading straight towards me. I up until now had only killed one deer ( doe ) with the bow and passed on numerous small bucks earlier in the year. But upon hearing the owl I new Lee had sent me this deer as a sign he’s looking over me. Buck enters and turns slight quartering away. I draw from 11 yards or so and release the arrow. Perfect shot resulting buck to go 75-80 yards and quickly expiring. Now every time I hear an owl I know Lee is looking over me. Carpe Diem was a favorite saying of his. So seizing the moment is something I’ve been trying to do more so. With this owl and his talons outstretched it’s like he’s ready to seize what ever falls upon him. Miss brother Lee every day

  3. Limit today by 7:10. Should've been sooner dropped 3 that were hooked but two were doubles so couldn't get one in to get the other in time. Also got one short. Fished for another 15 minutes after limit and caught another and threw it back and added a white perch. Cold out there and rain close so off the lake. Nothing huge but they were def hitting. Best perch of the year so far just over 12". Then fish cleaned, boat gassed up, showered and breakfast by 10am . Not bad.

  4. I just completed my AR-15 build and figured I'd share. I didn't have an AR platform prior to this and was starting to want one more and more. This should be plenty capable of taking deer out to about 200 yards or so. Also a good home defense option. Don't get me wrong, if someone comes at me and threatens me for my car, they can have it. I have insurance. Same thing with items in the house. You want my TV? take it. Those things aren't worth anyone losing a life over. But.. if you threaten me or my family to the point where I NEED to be able to defend, this will be my go to. I don't ever think I'd be in that position, and I certainly don't lose sleep over it. The way things have been going lately though, this is something I'd rather have and not need than need and not have. For calibers, I wanted something that was (typically) accessible, not terribly expensive, and that would be effective on deer and (hopefully some day) pigs. I considered things like the 6.5 CM, Grendel, .350 Legend, and a few others and ultimately settled on the .350. Every article and youtube review I've seen on it says that it's accurate out to 200 or so, and that the recoil is mild enough for just about anyone. They also say that the caliber is plenty effective on deer and hogs. So now that I had the caliber figured out, I just had to find parts. That's easier said than done these days. I like the idea of assembling it myself so I can better understand the mechanics of it, and I like to tinker. I've watched a ton of videos and the process didn't seem overly complicated. I also like saving money on things that I can do myself. I found a stripped lower receiver locally from an FFL ($85). The lower build kit came from Black Rifle Depot ($115). I found the Bear Creek Arsenal complete upper in NC for complete with (2) 20 round mags ($450). I installed a button mag release to fix the mag. Firefield Rapidstrike optic ($150). I still will have to purchase a 10 round mag for it along with a forward grip and sling. For the optic, I wasn't sure what to go with. Red Dot v. Holographic v. LPVO. Everyone has an opinion and uses what works for them in their application. After handling a few, and with what I plan to use it for, I ended up going with the LPVO. I handled a few at the lower end of the price range including Vortex, Firefield, and a few others. At that price point, and with the included features and stellar reviews, I went with the Firefield Rapidstrike. Decent glass, illuminated reticle, exposed turrets, and it included the mount all for under $150. The actual assembly was easy enough. I worked on it little by little over a few weeks. When all was said and done, it probably took about an hour to piece together. I thought that wasn't bad for my first time! I can't wait to get it out and cycle a few rounds through it. Edit: Not long after I wrote this, I went camping and had this in the canoe when we capsized! I searched, but never found it!

  8. I just love this picture. He is 1.5 years old about 70 lbs. Pure bred Black Mouth Cur but looks nothing like the breed because of the white suppressive gene he has. (so I'im told) He is full speed when need to be and as gentle and caring in other situations. I lost Mac Dec 26th 2020 and thought I would wait a year or two for another dog. I got Oakley in February and never looked back. Those of you who have recently lost a pet, there is another waiting for you out there. You deserve each other!

  9. recap of this mornings hunt and some history with this bird. as I said I made a not normal for me mental mistake on this bird back on 5/13 when he bought my fly down and soft yelps hook line and sinker and knowing this bird has been hounded relentlessly since youth season I knew I should of got across the little part of the field to get closer to the outside corner and roll of the hill because my sixth sense told me he is going to come down that edge drop down the hill then come up the finger of the field I was at the end of and when he didn't see a hen there he was NOT going to come in.....had I scurried over and set up I would of had him dead at 25 yards. Monday I heard him and played cat and mouse over 2 miles and I swear he was part road runner because i could not get ahead of him., at 10 am. I unloaded the gun and took off for the vehicle to try and get around him and by the time i got over there he was another 1/2 mile farther on the power line. Tuesday i got in super early and when he gobbled he was almost a mile away across the big hollow so off I was and just simply could not get caught up to him. Wednesday he was back in our playground but he somehow got around me and out to the hens and then he off to the races again. today, walking in at 230 am was like walking out at 6 am,,, man it was bright! I had a hunch that today the back finger of that field above the river was going to be the spot. it took a long time to walk in there when using the periodic clouds to block out the full moon as I knew I was going to be in with the hens. Finally got settled up against a double trunk apple tree on the outside corner. It was pretty light when I heard the first gobble WAAAYYY behind me and i knew immediately it was not road runner, 5 minutes latter a gobbble WAAAAAAAY out front and across a 80 foot deep ravine with a big creek at the bottom. As much as I didn't want to do it as I had hens right above me in a oak tree 10 yards away I knew i had to let him know there was a hen there waiting on him. so I hammered a flydown cackle into some short hard cutts. man did the trees light up around me with one hen being extremely harsh with her response. He gobbled again from the same spot and as the hens all calmed down some when he gobbled a few minutes later I could barely hear him but knew he was on the ground and on my side of the creek. he gobbled 3 more times the last just before entering the field directly across from me, the one really sassy hen was coming down the edge looking for that first hen to talk and she was going through the entire hen vocabulary from putts to kee kee's, purrs....and she was getting close now at less that 5 yards. He had worked across the field half way and was now at 25 yards but in full strut with nothing but air between us and he finally broke strut as the hen is now 5 feet from my right knee, my thumb was already on the safety so when he broke strut I eased the safety off settled the crosshairs on his eye and it was over. he was a lightweight at 16 lbs, sported a paintbrush 10.5" beard and 1 3/16 needle sharp spurs,,,,,and 6 copper plated #5 shot in his left thigh and lower left breast muscle. I put a jr. hunter and his dad on a pair of 2 year olds yesterday morning and.........well lets just say the JR hunter learned there is way more area around a turkeys head than on a turkeys head as he promptly missed him with a scoped 20 gauge at a whopping 7 yards... I told them how to walk in there, what tree to set up on, where the birds were going to come from......I just failed to tell him to let the bird walk out 20 yards into the field before trying to shoot him LOL. at least it was an absolute clean miss. I put those birds to bed tonight and tomorrow morning its Jason's turn at trying one of them, while he is trying those birds I am scouting for a back up for him or intell for next year.

  18. Only two types of people don't think it was stolen. Trump haters and fools. There is a ton of evidence out there to prove it, but it's either being ignored or suppressed. What we witnessed in 2020 was a political coup, the likes of which the world has never seen, by the most corrupt government ever. If you don't think so, just wait to see what happens in the next few years. God help America.

  32. I put in a 1/4 acre pond at the lowest spot at my place. It took me almost a week to dig it with my Ford 8n and a pond scoop. The tractor needed a valve job when I got thru. Deer do seem to like it. I have caught does with fawns back there swimming a few times, on hot summer afternoons. Mortally wounded bucks have ran directly towards it a couple time. One made it to within a yard of the water line, before dropping dead in sight from my stand.

  33. Well without Universal voter ID there's no way to know for sure if the election was stolen or not if Ihad to bet on it i would say odds are it was stolen . Just by looking at the numbers Biden got at his rallies compared to what Trump had it's hard to imagine he won legitimately . If you remember Trump got huge rallies when he was running against Hillary to and that one he won . They had 4 years to plan the cheat .

  44. Since Biden was ordained, it has sure gotten better for criminals. Easier to get away with crimes including murder and getting "get out of jail" cards has never been better. Not to mention illegally entering the country without fear of being detained or deported. ICE agents are now saying they are not allowed to do any of their job anymore under Biden's new rules. Leftist political sex offenders like Biden and Cuomo have it made now too, since the media is not only covering for them, it's coaching them on how to handle the allegations. They all hated Trump because he exposed all of this.

  47. Who the hell is more demeaning on this forum than Grouse?? I can't think of anyone. He thinks he knows it all and thinks he has all the "facts" and anyone who might have a different view is immediately accused of being a lefty. He is full of $hit and full of himself and nothing more (how is that for being demeaning?). I can guarantee you that he is one of the biggest reasons that the traffic on this forum is getting less and less. People are tired of constantly seeing his bull$hit posts around here.
