  1. There is no question that hunting is being eased out of our heritage and culture. I was just thinking how things have changed, just over the course of my life, regarding how society sees hunting. I remember when: The gun hunting course was conducted in the school bus garage. I used to go to school with my hunting knife hanging on my belt after running my trapline. Kids used to actually look forward to the age when they could legally hunt. Opening day of deer season was an approved absence from school. Monday mornings at work found a rather large circle of us friends discussing the weekend hunt. It was exciting conversation when your buddies saw a deer while bowhunting........Buck, doe, adult, fawn.....any deer at all. The topic of antler scores never came up. We didn't rate our deer hunting activities in terms of "scores". Thanksgiving day dinners were delayed until suppertime so all the men could hunt. Whenever a group of men gathered for any occasion, hunting stories dominated the conversations. Discussions about hunting did not focus on the latest technology or equipment. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Does anyone else remember how things have changed regarding hunting in our lives and society?

  2. Maybe some think it's stupid and it doesn't bring in many youth but it sure will be nice being out there with my son and him having a chance at a deer with rifle before the regular November season. And I'm sure I'm not the only one out there who feels this way.

  5. Hunting was a family event. With the decline of family values, hunting is just one bonding activity no longer practiced. I have 3 children. 2 of them hunted when teens. Now only 1 hunts. The other lost interest when he seen a deer die in front of him. The one that never hunted with me would have rather hung out with mom, she is all girl. Now I have my grandson, who will be 4 this year as my " hunting partner". He went out with me a few times last year, doesn't sit still, not quiet, asks about everthing that he finds. We even got to see deer, and track one. He knows what acorns are and even brought home deer poop in his pocket to show mema. I remember the old days well, but am certainly looking foward to the new days

  6. DISLIKE!!!! Sorry you are feeling that way especially over bow frustration….give it time, visit a shop, have them watch you shoot and help make the adjustments. Too many good things happen in the woods to sit it out in my opinion Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  7. I Remember....... No posted signs. Neighbors hunted our land, and us theirs. We wore overalls and flannel, no camo. And those thin rubber boots that your feet always froze in. When someone got a deer, it was story time! You told the story or listened to it over and over! It was also a get together, with a few hands to make that deer ready for the freezer. And everyone there, took a little venison home. Dividing up slugs, so we all had the same amount. Younger hunters ALWAYS dragged deer for the older hunters. Younger hunters were mostly given first choice on hunting spots. Older hunters still killed more deer. If you shot, and didn't have a deer to show for it, you had some explaining to do! And likely would lose your shirt tail! Deer drives on Thanksgiving morning. If someone shot "a buck" a few miles away, we all went to see it! Just a few memories here. I could go on and on. Good times.

  9. Lol.. Yes they do. My favorite pastime.. sitting in a treestand scraping them off with the blade of my knife.. I have a shirt or 2 that I threw away after getting into the "sticktights" 2 pronged ones.. I wadded them up into a ball and it just together.

  10. I know that problem well, if you can not mount the scope back far enough you will not see a full field of view and the only way of getting around it properly is a scope that has extra long eye relief, higher rings or extension rings that get the placement just right. My old Ruger heavy barrel 77 220 Swift 12 X Leupold is back as far as it will go , the front bell is just above the barrel and the adjustment turrets almost touching the back scope ring. As it sits I am just barely getting the full field of view and that is with light clothing, being used for summer time chuck and crow hunting. I do not have a heavy thick coat on that might be worn during the cold months and putting the rifle just a bit father away from my eyes. It is something to be taken in consideration when mounting your scopes. Now I also have a sporter weight 77 in 220 Swift that I do use for cold weather varmint hunting wearing heavier clothes so I needed a scope with long eye relief like the Burris Timberline to get it back far enough for a full field of view and even then it just barely made it with the front bell back as far as it will go before hitting the ring. Back when these rifles first came out the mounting of a favorite scope could be tough, these days there are options that can make it happen. Al

  12. I have a Russian SKS rifle that I just plink with, I use the cheap Russian Wolf ammo which works perfectly fine in it. Not a tack driver by any means but it is sure a lot of fun. Al

  13. While farting in the wind may be somewhat overboard the fact of the matter is the Democrats are against the Second Amendment and would like nothing better than seeing it gone. Gun control is in the forefront of their party's platform for all to see, they preach it not stop, and they are using every conceivable way they can to get around the Second Amendment. Al

  14. Some people cannot comprehend the issue. Choosing not to buy something is freedom of choice. Not being able to buy something because the government says you can't is Marxist totalitarian tyranny. The left is trying to put all the US manufacturers of guns and ammo out of business with lawsuits. If they succeed and imports are banned, guess what? 40% of all available ammo right now comes from Russia. All ammo prices are about to skyrocket. Steel ammo keeps the price of brass ammo low because it offers an option. That's competition. This move will hurt US consumers more than it will hurt Russia. It just cuts off a supply of less expensive ammo. But Biden actually wants to increase prices on everything the base of his political opposition buys. Meanwhile he uses their tax dollars to pay off loans for his base.

  19. I have 4 of these in the safe so I can let this one go. I got it on a trade a few years ago. I shot it to ensure function and it’s sat there since. I don’t know anything about the scope other than it’s a gander mountain in weaver rings. I’ll throw in the box of shells for asking price. Compared to recent auctions on gunbroker I think my price is fair but feel free to shoot me an offer. Always interested in trades of guns and leupold scopes. 625$OBO. 23. I remember when things change and the hunting community that gathered in diners and driveways now meets in the “Live from the woods” thread prior to and post the hunt to share stories with like-minded sportsman from across the state and to form some pretty cool and unique friendships. My first hunt was after college (25 years ago) so I had no experience of those days of pulling off the road and just hunting tracts off land and checkpoints and full motels (even then the hunting numbers seemed down - prior to serious pocket internet and cell phones). I’m already too old to regret the life we have (while living it) and will look to make new traditions since going backwards is rarely a possibility. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  24. I like the Saturday opener a lot better. It sucked having to burn a vacation day or skip school when it was on a Monday. Sure there is less oortunity for pre season drinking and partying now, but it is supposed to be about hunting.

  25. Pots and pan deer drives ... large groups of family hunting entire hills and valleys . Going in at dark with a canteen and PBJ sandwiches. Coming out after dark . No stands still hunting . Getting dropped of alongside a highway at 6 am and hunting 5 miles back down a ridge line to be picked up at dark by my mom on the way home from work at 5 pm . Stopping at the dec check stations checking out the deer being inspected. Buying slugs at jc penny at the mall. Deer strapped to top of the family wagon. Successful hunters treated like heroes not villafied. Sitting next to potbelly stove listening to my great uncles and gramps talk about the good old days .. scorching my Woolrich pants while dosing off. Great memories.

  26. Now go to 7.62 , which the AK uses. Imported steel, case is what feeds those guns . I don’t have one ,so the impact on me isn’t a direct one , but I view any reduction in the ammo supply as having a cumulative effect ( affect ? )

  27. And when the Russian ammo is not available anymore, what do you expect will happen to the price of the cheap America stuff?
    2 points
  28. Dirt Time is capable of the most convoluted, tortured, irrational. illogical thinking I have ever seen. He really has no idea how the American economy works and doesn't seem capable of learning. How is it he can support Biden sanctioning Russia, but not China? Quote: "it's a restriction/sanction on a country that does horrible things to innocent people." China is far worse than Russia in this respect. You do not force Americans to boost the economy through government regulation. It's done by companies that sell a better product that people willingly pay for. If everything goes up in price in America, that doesn't make the economy better. It makes it worse because nobody can afford anything. That's how Democrats ruin the economy. Wages do not go up to match price increases for goods. I really have a very low tolerance for stupidity and the economy would do better if everyone did.

  29. Sadly as a nation of consumers we can not manufacture enough goods for the American people. This last years shortage has proved that. Why sanctions on firearms and ammo? Why not the same sanctions on China? Seems more like a move on the 2nd ammendment.

  31. All this makes you wonder why we have ANY "special" seasons" at all? Why not just have "Deer Season", and use any weapon you want? Isn't that what crossbow hunters really want anyway? Some of you crossbow proponents must kind of have that feeling. Why do you want to exclude guns from a certain part of the deer season. Isn't that a bit of an elitist and exclusionary attitude and perhaps showing a bit of selfishness? Let's really open up bow season and stop hogging up the woods for the elitist bow and crossbow hunters. I know a lot of rifle hunters that would love to have that nice warm part of the year to use their guns on deer. Of course I say all this with tongue-cheek, but when you listen to the arguments for demanding full inclusion of crossbows, that thought of an "any-weapon" deer season has to cross your mind.

  38. Got winter wheat and rye in today, bit late. Everything is so damn wet. Plotmaster works pretty good in pre-tilled earth, wouldn't want to have to break sod with it though. We should have about 5 acres of plots in this year.

  39. Checked my brassica planting this morning before I went to work. There are a few areas of standing water, but overall the germination is excellent. Turns out I could have seeded even lighter. I went with 3.75 lbs on a half acre. The seed company recommendations were all over the place. More rain in the forecast. Guess we'll get what we get. Things looked pretty good this morning though.

  44. Back in the 60's if you hunted from a "tree stand" it was a wooden platform you built in a tree. It was nice not having to carry a climber into the woods and you could be much quieter. Of course if you didn't maintain it, you were risking your life in it, so there's that.

  45. Easy hunting? Is it really that hard to kill a deer today with any implement? One might say..I don’t have a lot of deer on my land.. So go where there is! I have said it many times. Does not take much fortitude to kill just any deer with any of today’s weapons.

Not every season but probably 50 percent of the time . I would think your chances are better while there’s more tags available earlier during license sales .
