  4. This crossbow issue is "AGAIN" getting pretty redundant. Running over the same old ground, over and over, really serves no purpose to anyone. Just more silly phrases and words from both sides. And I'm just as guilty as anyone else. If full inclusion passes in the future, it is what it is. Won't really make much difference to most participating in this, and all the many other crossbow threads we've had here. So if you want to use a crossbow during whatever time it's legal to do so, go ahead, no problem. It's not hurting anyone. And if you wouldn't be caught dead with a crossbow, that's fine too! You also won't be hurting anyone. Buy a new bow and be happy! Hunt the way YOU want!!! Shoot what you like, like what you shoot. Guess I'll spend more time getting ready to hunt. After all, aren't we are all, actually just hunters?

  8. Pulled a dozen cards yesterday. I only went through about half of them, but he's the star of the show so far. Got quite a few pics of him on multiple cams over a month's time. Didn't see him on the last pull, but he's definitely hanging around. For now anyways.

  9. Well I started this thread in April and did not check it all summer. Glad to see no one changed their minds. So I’ll update my summer. Struck out turkey hunting. Nephew got a nice one on DEP land. Bought a Ruger Wrangler 22. Nice little handgun for only 200 bucks. Shot that a lot. That got me in a Ruger mood so I shot my 10-22 and Mini 14. Fun to shoot guns. Of course I shot skeet. Not very well but whatever. Mowed the new food plot we planted on that little piece we bought surrounded by DEP land. Clover came in good. Have several bears on camera. I’ll try for one on Saturday. As for crossbows I’m done talking about them. Not buying a new one. My Tenpoint Titan is fine. Killed two bucks with it. One good one and one small one. So that’s it. I’ll let you guys get back to the same old same old. Good luck hunting. As the kids say peace out.

  10. I figured I’d keep rolling on this thread instead of making a new one. I pick up ten 2x4x8 pressure treated boards to build a railing around the porch for safety and for a shooting rail. I prepped the posts tonight and will install over the weekend. Each post is 2 pieces. 1 longer than the other so I can screw it into the side of the blind. I hope my idea works. 11. My personal experience: I have been in an ADK club as a paying member since 2004. 1000+ acres and 7 landowners. Least dense deer numbers in the state. The club has withstood the test of time since shortly after WWII. There is a bit of an unwritten pecking order mostly based upon the amount of work those at the top actually put into the camp. I think people understanding that, being respectful, and lending a helping hand are key factors in a club's success. I'm the only "city" boy in this club and catch crap for it constantly, but i have earned their respect out of shear willingness to learn and pitch in with any and all chores. Some guys are skilled carpenters, loggers, electricians, engineers, etc. and can do things I simply can't. So I take pride in ensuring the miles and miles of trails we have are cleared as are the paths to their stands. Mae sure the firewood is cut, split, and stacked as a couple examples. There have been people that come and go and definitely some issues amongst members but the key is recognizing that no one person or click of guys is above the club. For example, I wont shoot a 4 or less buck unless my family was starving. I have done so in the past, just choose not to at this point in my life. Many guys will shoot the first 3" legal buck they see. While I don't necessarily agree with their choices, I know they want the meat before anything else and who am i to pass judgement. Seeing the big picture rather than my short term hunting goals is more important, ie. the friendships, the memories, the card games etc. Example: As deer drives are becoming a thing of the past, some of my fondest memories are getting the older guys out to sit on some watches while we bust some brush trying to get one of them a deer. In my opinion, too many people today like to speak before spoken to and that never ends well...

  15. Got to remember ,nuisance tags are available for the summer ,and many guys already shoot them with guns during that time ,plus people shooting woodchucks all summer, ect .Don’t think it would have much affect.

  19. I’m going a different direction on a pack/bino harness for tracking this year and I am giving Alaska Guide Creations a try. It’s been along time since I got customer service even close to what I got from them. I had some technical questions and some pricing questions and all questions were answered almost instantly even over a holiday weekend. I spoke directly with Zac and couldn’t be happier with the service I received. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  21. We really reduced our time spent on plots this year. While fun and also helpful we had a goal of minimizing our time putting them in this year to free us up for other hunting related work. We did this plot in about two hours mid August - we did disc this with equipment but then hand seeded limed and fertilized. We didn’t even spray this one. I’ll take the fall for the “gaps” in coverage but in my defense I was ready for a break in that weather. We will top it this week with a touch more triple 10 and some oats over seeding but compare it to some of the other plots we’ve done and I don’t get a perceivable difference in end result. The oats and wheat have done a good job bringing in attraction now. I backed off the radish and turnip ratio a bit to hit this mix. Seems to be working. We do have a nearly 2 acre corn field off to the right of the frame we also put in. That was about four hours of work on a couple days and will serve as a food plot through the season. Plus another hour for fertilizing. All in with all of our plots we likely have 15 hours in, in total. Much less than last year. None of them are as photogenic but I think they will be effective.

  23. I've seen guys shooting dirty hot ML barrels and setting their crosshairs to that at the range, just to be surprised at the next range visit with that first shot thru a clean cool barrel landing on a different spot on paper. The shot you take at a deer will be with clean cool barrel, just something to remember. I leave my smokeless center fire rifle barrels uncleaned for the season because that where they were when sighting in. But you can't leave a ML uncleaned for any period of time.

  26. Yes, we get one to split between my partner and I. He uses more meat than I do, so I always defer to him. He has more mouths to feed. Times being what they are, this year I'm being asked by a couple more folks that have little, to give more meat if I have any extra to give. These are proud people. I always drop off meat saying my freezer is full, and could they help me out by taking some. My freezer will go empty before theirs does.

  28. It is finally alive, been acquiring parts from all over the US to build a three hundred and thirty eight Winchester mag Thompson Center Encore. She came out pretty well I think. Waiting for some brass which is terribly hard to get these days to handload some test rounds. I once had a very accurate Sako Finnbear in 338 and still have the loading equipment so getting this one stoked will be easy. Took several head of big game and and probably a couple of dozen woodchucks with that Sako rifle, some good memories. The hardest part was getting the 338 barrel, they are rare and I was outbid a bunch of times on any that came up on ebay and gun broker, once I had the barrel picking up the rest of the parts was was not bad. Every part was used except the walnut forend. Al

  34. 3S - went today to check my @phade browning cam for first time. I was worried about flooding and was right. Had to walk through knee deep to recover the cam and move it to dryer land. I opened a scrape. But it's raining pretty good. Near where last year's was but not exact spot since that spot is gone. The browning cam worked great though catching a doe on dry land Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

  36. Got this email yesterday, which I'll admit is a step for the DEC. Normally they put these things out for public comment and then just do whatever the hell they want anyhow... which if I'm being honest seems like they did with blaze orange here. I see that many other hunters sent similar notes and reasons as I did. Still haven't met anyone who supported early doe. https://www.dec.ny.gov/docs/wildlife_pdf/deerreg2021apc.pdf

  37. If my WMU had the early season, I'd probably look for a youth or first time hunter to take out. Not worried at all about spooking the deer with a few gun shots. Always take a couple youths during the youth season, and never seen a change in pattern after a couple deer are taken. Good luck to all headed out.

  38. I can usually get off 3 or 4 shots between cleaning using a little bore butter on the plastic sabots with 100 grains of 777 powder (2 pellets) in my 50 cal. I set it 1" high at 50 yards.

  40. And not in a good way. Lol. Lost my one property and first time ever, the farmer planted no crops on either side of my place. WTH. I always have beans and corn. Well they just planted winter wheat on one side which could help late season. So it’s been doe central with only little guys on camera. I might just sit it out until rut which is fine since I have not been motivated. But good news, God is watching over the property. See photo. Probably kill my biggest ever right there under His spotlight when I least expect it. Lol

  41. I'd start at 25 yrds. You can take the breach plug out and look through the bore at a target, then the scope to see if it's "close". Adjust as necessary. Then move out to 50 and dial it in. Once dialed in at 50, you should only need to raise the POI at 100yrd+. What powder, bullet do you have? Do you have a bullet starter? Definitely a helpful tool.

  42. Not to hijack bionics thread , but it was a nice Tuesday night sharing drinks with Mike and Jen and meeting them. He gave us advice on where to see moose, so Wed. night we headed out for a drive at 10:30 and about half way between Rockwood and Jackman we encountered a cow and calf and then seen 3 more cows on our drive back about 3-5 miles from Jackman , no photos unfortunately. Thanks for the tip you two and enjoy the rest of your vacation .
