  2. 9/29 I was driving home this morning after spending the night with buddies at Camp Serenity, which is run by Wounded Warriors Outdoors Adventures, when I received a call requesting help with a tracking job. The hunter told me he had shot a 9 pointer at 40 yards and believed he hit him too far back. He waited 2 hours before looking, but bumped the buck out of a bed at 80 yards. Going in too soon on a gut or liver shot was the only mistake this hunter made. He made a great decision by backing out immediately and waiting until this morning to go look. He was only able to advance the track a short distance this morning due to being in the cedars….tough tracking there. This is where he made another great decision….he backed out without grid searching and called! Luna made short work of this 375 yard track. If the hunter had continued pushing that buck last night there’s a good chance we would not have recovered him. I wasn’t there for the field dressing, but the hunter reports the arrow caught lung and sliced part of the heart. The entry point was back quite a ways, but the deer was quartering away. Poor Kunox has had to track 2 deer that were still alive while Luna gets the dead ones. His luck will change soon.

  3. One nice thing about crossbow not opening up until peak rut time, is that it gives us more time to get ready. I moved a blind today, to a strategic location, about 30 yards from the intersection of corn, radish/turnip, and white clover plots. Hoprfully, the deer get accustomed to the new location (it was 100 yards further south) by opening Saturday. I saw two young bucks on my way back from the move tonight (a 4 point and a spike). They will be on my hit list on the second weekend but not on the first.

  6. 9/28 #1 I was called last night and asked to track a 4 pointer that was shot at 5:15. The hunter wasn’t sure where he had hit him, but thought maybe one lung or liver. He had waited about 45 minutes before starting to track. He was approximately 100 yards into the track when he jumped the standing buck, who blew as he took off. He jumped him again about 20 yards later and found a couple drops of blood where he was standing. The hunter attempted to leave the woods at this point, but got turned around and walked all through the area trying to get out. Kunox was taken to the hit site and quickly got locked on. There was never a lot of sign, a little bright red blood here and there, but no beds, and no recovered arrow. At 600 yards, Kunox went hot. We never saw the deer or any blood, but I let him continue, figuring I could always go back for a restart later if necessary. Kunox went hot again, and this time I found a tiny bit of fresh blood on a leaf. We continued but never caught up or got a glimpse. I called the track at .9 miles. #2 This 4 or 6 pointer was shot last night at 6:10, and I got the call this morning while on the first track. Kunox lucked out and got two in a row. When I heard where the deer had been shot, I knew if we didn’t find it close, we most likely wouldn’t find him at all. He had been shot high in the neck and the hunter could clearly see his arrow still in him as he ran off. Based on the small amount of blood, an artery was not hit. He was long gone.

  7. Simple is best, let the meat shine! Pull from oven when it hits 125 in the thickest part and let rest 5 minutes, slice and serve. A little horseradish is nice too.

  8. I put another stand up tonight. It is a used 2-man ladder (thanks goosifer)that I put up against a young red oak tree, at the front edge of our back wood lot. I am glad the ladder came in three 5 ft sections, so that I could place it at the upper limit of my “comfort zone” of ten ft rather than the 15 ft it could reach with all three sections installed. It was also a lot easier for me to put up that way by myself. The spot is overlooking a little hay field, with a good view down a maintained gas line right of way, that crosses our farm. My first sighting of the large-bodied 4 point, the other night, was 15 yards from it. Next spring, I will plow a little of that hay sod under, and put in some corn and brassicas, to sweeten the location a little. This year I will have to hope they come in for the acorns. If the weather cooperates this weekend, I hope to get another old single ladder stand up over at my folks place, combined with a squirrel hunt and trimming a branch from the shooting lane from another new stand over there (my button buck special). After that, all that will be left for me to do is check the zeros on my crossbows. I still have a bit over a month to accomplish that, thanks to “no full inclusion”.

  11. Shot my bow over at the club Monday, shooting broadhead and hunting set up dead on at 30 yards. Even flung a few from 40 yards, that hit good! But actually looking for a chip shot under 20 yards at a deer. So, all set there. Clothes all washed and sprayed with Sawyers. Boots and socks too. Pack all set. New batteries in my tracking lights, and rangefinder. Got a roll of blaze orange surveyor's tape to aid in tracking. Checked my HSS safety vest over for any rips or tears in the seams or straps. Checked and installed all safety lines last weekend. Knives are all razor sharp. All set to hunt for another season!!! Not sure when I'll be out there though. Going on day trip this weekend with Mrs grampy. Have some work that needs to get done up at the farm too. Mid October.......maybe? Early season is usually pretty slow around here, except for flat tops over to the lake property. So we'll see?

  16. I just built this for that purpose. I used the top from a resin picnic table. It's 6 foot long by nearly 3 feet wide and has a 1 inch lip all the way around. I attached 8 eye bolts, 4 on either side, to hook strap to. Also attached PVC handles at the front and back to help with lifting. I should be able to strap a deer to it and slide it right into the bed of the truck.

  24. From the truth is stranger then fiction dept. the gunsmith found a live round behind the action !!! Don’t know how, but Joe said he had the magazine out and was loading one at a time, which would mean you kinda have to tip it sideways I guess to,load it , somehow a round got in some open space and up inside . The thing is I’d figure he’d have to wonder where it went before trying to, load another ? Anyways it’s out ,the gun is deep cleaned and ready to rock , but he wants to shoot again soon to be sure things are still on . I Recommend using the mag .

  26. This cool day made we crave soup! Wild hog Italian sausage soup. So good! A bit sad as that was the last of the wild hogs. That meat was way better than expected! No gator this year. And down to maybe 8-10 pounds of assorted venison products. The freezer is waiting for filling!! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  32. I have a couple. What I am lacking currently, is the time to maintain proficiency with it. After the kids move out, and I retire, I may take it back up. For now, I get by ok, thanks to the much greater efficiency of the crossbow.

  35. Just an FYI. pint jars are 60 minutes and quarts are 90 for every cold packed meat recipe I have seen. If you are getting into this I highly suggest the Ball canning guide and discourage internet. I have seen a bunch of bad info out there and you do not want to mess with badly canned food.

  36. I buy the fattiest ground beef I can find, usually 70% lean... I grind about 1 part ground beef to 2 or 3 parts venison... Gives it enough fat to make a patty and tastes like hamburger to me...I use pork butt for sausage, and GB for burger...

  40. Not that I think this is good news by any means, but the PR only states GOEX and Old Eynsford, not the black powder substitutes. I could be wrong in my reading, but that's what I took from it. I wonder if they just see the trend being away from true black powder, and more leaning towards substitutes. If I'm not mistaken, Muzzleloading is really popular right now, but more going for in-line/modern guns vs traditional, which are the shooters who would be more interested in the true black powder.

  42. We moved a cam in Ohio to a cluster of rubs. To our credit we hung a stand 30 yards to the left of this before we found the rubs and runway. Good but I don’t think we can clear a shot here lol. We may need to move it. That said there are about 10 rubs in this field of view. First buck that went by.
