  3. Good friend of mine oldest daughter (12) is after her first deer. I offered to take them over to my spots in the evening if they were unsuccessful in the morning. They had deer around them, but they got busted. We set up around 3pm this evening. Seen our first deer around 5:30 150yrds out, but something spooked the doe, fawn and spike, and they ran over the rise in the field. 30 min later we had a big doe feed over the rise only 110 yrds out. Following her was her twins, a small spike, and a decent spike. Lila's leg was jumping uncontrollably as they fed closer. Around 90yrds out the wind swirled and they got nervous. Spike turned broadside, and Lila dropped him with a single shot from a .243. The smile on her face is priceless.

  4. My boy got it done today, first hunt, first deer, saw a small spike and 4 does this morning that he opted to pass on, then this afternoon we saw 2 does and this 3 pointer. Shot with 6.5 creedmoor, heart shot, only went 40 yards. We were both in tears as he wished his grandfather had been there to see his first harvest.

  6. Was a good day for youth here.. red brought his son down after his plans of a Erie County hunt were ruined and my friend Pam her son Evan .. was slow morning and Reds son had to get home.for hockey.. Pam and her son Dylan returned to hunt in evening going to same spot the kicked a nice buck out in the am walking in. Deer started entering the soybean field at 4pm and at 550 this guy stepped out across field. After calming nerves he made a good shot 150 yards hitting liver . I was attending 80 b day party for my.mother so they Sen me a photo and it looked like liver to me ,I requested they wait a couple hours as they were unfamiliar with property. A short track and this guy was laying , I m not sure who was more excited mother or son! A big congrats to Dylan Wenke! His 1st deer at 12 years old using his mom's .270 rifleDylan and his brother Evan who got his 1st deer last year here as weĺl at 13 with bow

  7. Here's the quick version. My buddy shot a buck last night. He recovered the arrow and thought the arrow struck further back than ideal. 20 yd quartering slightly away shot. Deer then ran straight into standing corn. He waited a few hours, looked and found blood but bumped the deer. He backed out. His concern with not getting it last night was the heat and coyotes. This morning he went back out at first light, but lost the trail in the corn. My son and I showed up to help. As we're pulling in, we see a dead buck not 10yds behind the back deck on the lawn. My buddy was a few hundred yds back and had no idea. It literally circled around and died right behind the house. Since it was recovered at that point, I showed my son the blood trail and what to look for and what to consider when trailing what could be an injured deer. All in all a great morning. I thought it was an 8 originally but it turned out to be a 7 pt.

  9. Pretty short and sweet story. Hunted Sunday PM with my son and we had an amazing sit. Saw piles of deer and even had some big bucks in the field. Unfortunately none came within bow range ( although my son said I should shoot them ) Got home and happen to check my cam and saw a giant bodied deer in a different field than the one we had sat in. I immediately wanted a closer look. I loved the fact he was a loaner away from all the herd we saw. Thankfully, the wind for that stand was perfect Monday so I hit it for an afternoon sit. The rest is history. He came out textbook the way he did the night before and I had a 17yrd shot. I waited in the stand for my dad and son to show up, and my son made short work of the track job. What an experiance to have 3 generations involved in! Thankful to punch a tag so early and be able to get some stuff done before gun season. According to the PA chest girth chart this buck dressed at 180# which was verified by an actual scale. Sent from my SM-G998U using Tapatalk

  11. We moved this stand to the thick stuff, below a small ridge. Shots will be close. But this is where we need to be, based on everything we've put together. It's not perfect, as access, and wind direction is the key, but it's close. This may be my gun opener spot? A cut between two big THICK bedding areas, that we never set foot in. About 200 yards to the left from the top picture. If I don't get him from one spot, hopefully I will from the other? Time will tell? Or perhaps I'll shoot the first decent one that comes in? I was quite humbled last year.

  14. My son's first year hunting, so glad they lowered the gun age to 12 just at the right time for us. We hunted in the morning, setup a pop up blind on a hedgerow where we thought would give us the best safe shooting lanes, avoiding neighboring properties for back stop reasons. Saw a buck, to far and while on our property the bullet would have travelled across another property if he missed. We learned from that morning and realized the only way from the ground we could get a shot would be to put the pop up literally in the middle of the field of beans. Just too many knowls even in flat property to see anything from one side of the field to the other. Went back in the afternoon, setup the blind and grabbed about 30 corn stalks from a friend. Around 6 a doe and fawn came out into the field to our south about 150 yards away. Not allowed to shoot doe here per the landowner so we just watched, had no shot as it was towards the road anyway. They worked right towards us slowly, they got to about 50 yards at sunset. Any closer and they are going to blow, would have ruined the entire last half hour more than likely. As we were both watching them get too close my son said they look like they are looking at something off to their left. We both looked out the from of the blind and there was a deer. Saw body but his head was in the brush munching on something. I said I think it's another doe and just then it wiped it's head around and I saw great mass, same deer as the morning. He got excited and said what do I do? I said better take the gun off of safe as a good first step lol. He took his time, deer had no idea we were there. He shot and it went straight down immediately, thought he had tagged him but then I saw that he tried to get back up and I knew right away he spined him. He tried to get up but could not, we scrambled and he dispatched with a second shot in the perfect spot once we got closer. Super proud of his abilities, 100 yard shot with a bipod, he tried to peak a few seconds early and shot high but he learned something.

  15. Went out for an evening hunt, nothing showed up on the kill plot, light south east breeze. Have to drive the family 6 hours to chataqua county today, so I pulled the plug at 645. My dad was at the cabin about 600 yards away making noise, working on the cabin. Walking down the wood road, stopped to look at our big plot which we mowed 2 weeks ago, there's a dozen deer in the field. This is less than 100 yards away from where I was sitting. Then I see a rack turn the corner, make towards the oak tree 15 yards away, so I freeze. He goes into the hedge row, and I hear munching. So I pull up the face mask, nock one, and slide over behind a big poplar. I know exactly where he's going to step out, but it's last light. Munching stops, I draw, he steps out, stares at me from under 20, and I watch the luminok slap home. Looked good, but didn't pass through. Saw him run and knock the arrow out on a tree. Thought I heard him crash. Back out, check again in 45, found the arrow, blood was excellent. Magnus Stinger went right through and poked out the other side. Got done butchering around 2am.

  19. We'll be checking into the cabin in Indian Lake on the 18th. I have seriously looked forward to the trips the past couple years because I flat out love hunting up north more then anywhere in NY. I think this year I'm a little more stoked then the other years because I'll be giving it a go hunting black powder for the first time. I have a couple of web harness set ups, and I think I'll be using the belt from one of them and keeping a few spare quick loaders in the pouches. To all the other hunters who will be out that week good luck.

  23. Welp we saw a lot of deer today and could have harvested about anyone of them but he’s holding out for his first set of horns!! Spent over 9hrs in the blind in total, so I was pretty impressed he could hang that long! Back at it in the am!

  25. I lost Mac my Wheaten Terrier 3 years ago. About two years before Macs passing we brought into the Family Kit who was a white Lab. They became best friends. Even when Macs eye sight was failing they played and Kit was gentle. Just a few pictures of their life together. Two amazing dogs. No need for condolences we went through this just thought these pictures were nice to share. Mac's last night with us kit watching over him. Dogs rock!

  27. Nothing again today but one of my target bucks is back. Reopened 10 big rubs found his tracks and his bed. His bed is 15yards off the road. So now I know he's back time to play the chess game. I opened up a scrape while I was there. I won't be back for another 2 weeks since I was so close to his bed. Needs some time to settle back down

  32. Rifle. Specifically a Remington 7600 pump carbine in 35 Remington or 35 Whelen. Heard about the Benoits in the early 2000’s and bought all their books and videos. Soon after bought my first 7600. Shot some nice bucks with the pump guns but funny thing the first buck I actually tracked I shot with a Remington 750 auto in 35 Whelen. It was a very rewarding experience that I have not yet duplicated. I shot a nice one with my crossbow and it was a great experience but it’s not the same as slinging a rifle over your shoulder and hunting on your feet. I guess I’m a cowboy at heart not a Indian.

  35. In. First sit here and already learning wind isn’t doing what it should here. Getting way more SW direction. As soon as I realized I got snorted at twice downstream. I have deer between me n truck now and no real other moves. Rarely do this but I’ll stick it out. Still have one major route in play.

  38. Thanks to a few good for nothing democrats, there won’t be too many of those smiles in my home county of Erie this year. I will not forget that and will vote straight republican in all elections henceforth. I encourage all others here to do likewise, especially left field, versatile hunter, gobbler chaser (who may actually all be be the same individual because none has posted photos showing their face), as well as chef and bowman Mike, who at least have the balls to post photos of themselves unlike that/those other fella(s)/gal(s).

  39. Wagyu carpaccio with raw quail egg, capers and horseradish. Grilled octopus with eggplant, olives, capers, polenta in a white wine sauce. Damn good meatballs. (Didn't take a picture) And patriot oysters that were very good with a slightly salty taste. Westtown Fare, was the first time for my wife and I. Was very nice we will go back, was kinda funny all four tables in our section were there for anniversaries. We are only five years but the couple next to us was 50 years!

  40. A tracker friend of mine in Missouri wrote this today and gave me permission to share it. Scary times ahead. Those that follow me may have noticed that I’ve avoided writing any posts that may appear “political” for quite some time. The fact is, that venting on social media does little to nothing to change the trajectory of our increasingly Marxist government. The last election was evidence enough of that. However, there is a HUGE storm looming on the immediate horizon that everyone should know about. It is likely to hasten the collapse of our medical system, in my opinion. When I say, “hasten the collapse,” I’m not talking about years down the road, I’m talking months. For those that don’t know my background, I am a hospital physician. I treat Covid daily. I’m also the Medical Director of a community hospital, member of the hospital board, and sitting member on the medical executive committee for the larger health care system I work for. That said, what follows is my own view, and is not necessarily the view of the system I work for. My health care system has actively promoted the Covid vaccine, something that I have no problem with. They have also resisted mandating the vaccine for their employees, a position counter to the other 2 large hospital systems in our area. I have been proud of our administration for that stance. Currently, health care workers are at an all time low, at a time when health care use is extremely high. Nearly every hospital in the country is working with a skeleton crew of staff. Doctor’s offices are the same. Our hospital, like most, has been forced to cap the number of patients we can admit due to insufficient staffing. Also, like most, we have been forced to close important services in our hospital, like the ICU because of staffing issues. This problem is made worse by the fact that hospitals across the country with the deepest pockets are now paying 5-6 X the normal wages of nurses in order to maintain enough staff to keep the doors open. It’s great news for nurses who are willing to relocate, but is obviously not sustainable for most hospitals. They do it with the hope that this problem will be quickly resolved. The problem is that it likely won’t be corrected before many hospitals collapse completely. The problem is already at CATASTROPHIC levels across the country, and I don’t use that word loosely. If this were the end of the problem, it would be enough. I would still have grave concerns about the viability of smaller health care systems across the country, like the one I work for. However, the problem is about to reach what is likely to be an unrecoverable tipping point with new legislation being pushed out by the tyrants who are in charge. They are in the process of issuing forced vaccine mandates for any organization that accepts Medicaid or Medicare. That includes nearly every single hospital in the country. It is also your doctor’s offices and health clinics. Granted, about 75% of health care workers are already vaccinated. I am among that crowd. I suspect another 10% or so will also fall in line. However, that leaves around 15% of employees that will leave health care immediately when this goes through in the next few weeks. Our system cannot survive that! There aren’t any reserves to fill in the gaps. Other states are already loosening restrictions on who can fill those roles, credentials are now less important than vaccination status. States like New York are looking at out sourcing health care jobs by bringing in more nurses from other countries. They are calling up the National Guard to fill gaps that aren’t likely to go away in the foreseeable future. There is no reasonable solution to this problem that they are purposely creating aside from complete government intervention. Whether that is the goal or not, it will be the outcome. In our own system, there are a number of physicians who have chosen not to be vaccinated. Many of them are among the top “producers” in the system. They take care of huge numbers of patients, in surgery, in cardiology, in primary care. These are medically educated individuals who have decided that the vaccine is potentially more risk for them due to their age and health status, than Covid is. Many of them already have natural immunity from having recovered from Covid. These physicians will be forced out of practice in this country if they don’t comply. Many of them will leave. All of this is being pushed down our throats for “the good of the community.” The trouble is, none of that is true. The only person that the Covid vaccine protects is the person who receives the shot. Their own data has shown that vaccinated people are every bit as likely to spread the virus as unvaccinated people. In fact, vaccinated people with the virus are more likely to be asymptomatic spreaders of the virus while they go on about their daily lives. Hospitals are congested, and Covid is a part of that. But it’s not the biggest part of the problem. Staffing shortages which spiked with “enhanced unemployment benefits” and have continued to worsen due to continued labor shortages across the board are the main problem. We don’t blame people with COPD or pneumonia or diabetes for “clogging up” our healthcare system, and yet it is en Vogue to blame unvaccinated individuals when they get admitted to the hospital. They are the new “lepers” among us. I don’t know what can be done to stop this looming disaster. Our state governments are feckless at best, and complicit at worse, in their handling of this disaster. The crisis is upon us, though, and soon it will be too late for us to recover.

  41. First time not seeing deer tonight. Beech nuts were falling good tonight. 645 I headed out of the woods onto a powerline. While standing there I watched a bear come out. He headed down the powerline trail behind me as I walked home. I figure he headed into the beech nuts. I have seen several bears over the years, but first one bow hunting. He was the biggest I can recall seeing, and only the second one I have seen on this property. Hope he was passing through, I don't have interest in a bear.

  43. 8j and my son turned 12 in April this year. He was excited to bow/duck hunt in the first place and then when they lowered the gun age he was even more so. He got his very first duck on youth/veterans weekend up north 3 weeks ago. We bow hunted last weekend and he is gun hunting for the youth Columbus day weekend. We are trying a bean field this morning, bumped a few setting up but then saw a really nice 6 at shooting time. He just stayed out of range I was comfortable letting him shoot and also worrying about backstop issues. The having to be on the ground rule is pretty tough with a rifle and angles.
