  2. Late post but hunted 3s management property after school today. Wind was whipping so I tucked into a ledge that holds acorns. At 5;00 winds started to die down at 5:45 I caught motion. Delicious doe! She worked straight to me and at 15 yards she was under a close tree so I drew back. She cleared the tree but was head on-no front pocket shots allowed from climbers. She cooperated and turned to her left and I was able to christen my new to me (courtesy of chef’s need for a new bow) Halon. 4 hours later…. I’m going to start a new thread about shot placement and tracking sign since she really threw me off. Happy to have her and the MEAT she will provide!!! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  3. The buck that I was most hoping to see back on this farm finally revealed himself this morning. I set a cam on a hot appletree on Sunday in the rain just hoping that this buck or something else good might be lurking. Ended up getting 900 pics in 3 nights. No history with this buck other than he showed up in late January several times on cam and then disappeared. I had one sighting of him back in July on a neighbors beanfield

  5. Hunt #6 10/19. Roadkill stand. Got out after work and got into our close stand that has been getting a ton of does on cam. It just felt like deer were gonna come out at any time. Just after 6pm two does come walking down the trail just like it was scripted. Drew back and shot the second larger one. Complete pass thru. And it went back up the trail it came on. The other one hung out in front of me for 15-20 minutes. Got down after 45 minutes and checked the arrow and it had more guts and liver than I sure wanted to see. Not good in this place it's just so thick and I've lost one to Coyotes before. So snuck out , went home and let the dog out. It has now been 2 hours so gonna just see if any kind of blood trail. Was happy to see a pretty decent blood trail and the deer went right down our mowed trail. So kept on it and about 150 yards there it was right on the edge of the trail. Whew was worried on recovering this one. But haven't lost one since I've used grim reapers they sure do some damage. She must have been quartered more than I thought. Arrow came out way back. But she was down. Gutted, carted out, skinned and quartered and in to cool before midnight. Checked cam card and does all over this spot. Last 3 nights at 6 pm . And also this morn at 9 and again at 2pm. Could just feel I was gonna have some action Tonite. Meat in the freezer, now I can play for a buck! First doe I have ever tagged in this spot. Have tomorrow off to do the butchering. Worked out perfect.

  6. Been hunting this property for 30 yrs. Never seen a bear or bear shit, or anything remotely indicating a bear. Hunted Maine for bear many yrs and know bear sign. This is the first confirmed sighting of a bear in this area in 30 yrs with dozens of cams throughout the yrs on 900+ acres.

  7. Gonna be a long night. Sent one on big doe about 6:15. Full pass thru. Checked arrow and it looks more liver/gut than I like to see. Went home to let the dog out. Gonna go back and take a little look and go from there....hoping it down . Those grim reapers do a job. If not gonna be a longer night of hoping no coyotes.

  8. Doe to fill the freezer back up. Tonite it just felt like the perfect night. I just knew something was gonna come out. Two doe came out just after 6pm right down the trail like they read the script. I shot a bit far back and it exited back so she must have been quartered more than I thought. Backed out for a couple hours then went back to just see if any blood trail. Had a good blood trail so kept going and it started getting just a few drops. But she was laying there right in the trail and went about 150 yards. Happy to get a good early doe!

  9. Did a little tuning while you all are hunting. Not bad for a 6000lb 6 banger. Lol. And I know it’s got more as I spun badly out of the hole. It’s a fun beast.

  11. Well I missed my week 4 pick . Was a long rough weekend . Hunted with Bill on Saturday saw nice buck . Hunt with bow on Sunday saw turkeys . They didn't come in close enough for me to send an arrow . Had to leave early for a celebration of life for the neighbor who passed from covid . Well let me tell you that was the best and most fun I have ever had at a funeral . They had lots of food and cake a small service . After the service man left the family said some words and brought out a pot of pot . She was a blazer and they had everyone roll their own joint and the smoked it for her . Well I didn't smoke mine I gave it to hubby and took a hit off his . But I tell you I was so high . 40 people smoking around you . I think I slept the best sleep I have ever had that night . I was out by 730. So I missed my 4 week pick . Today I went out and saw nothing again . Sat at a pinch point around swamp corner and field. Always this weekend . Or I can try to get out after. Work tomorrow and Thursday and Friday.

  12. This time of year, I spend a lot of time reading and responding to "4-H Project Record Books". It's really a lot of fun to read about the projects these kids have been doing, and seeing the learning that has occurred through their involvement. I see a lot of "I learned not to stab myself with the needle" and such. However, I see several that really warm my heart and make me proud to be doing the work that I'm doing. I recently read from an 11 year old's book "4-H makes me feel good about myself"...whew. Anyways, it's always special when I see growth in my Shooting Sports kids, case in point, the narrative below. This is from a girl who went from the lowest of lows when her bow malfunctioned at the NYS 4-H Shoot, and after members and volunteers all worked their butts off to get it back together, ended up taking 3rd place in Field Archery. I love it when these kids see the deeper lessons. I always say that we use Shooting Sports (or any number of other projects) as conduits to teach meaningful life skills. Stories like this let me know that I'm being successful in that.

  13. Great night saw this guy at 80 yards away in the woods, I was along the woods edge and a bean field he came out mid woods at 6:00 and stood in one spot for a timed 15 minutes , then was just gone . I watched him through my binoculars and he was watching me … I was totally silhouetted against the bright field . Then two big doe came out into the beans, and walking out there was another feeding in a cut corn field , how she didn’t hear me stepping on every stick and tripping as I reached the end of the lane is a mystery. I passed this buck two years ago ( rifle) at 60 yards as he was on mean Jeans land and she asked I don’t kill deer on her side . One pic is 2019 another this summer .

  15. This year my son in laws dad pulled a bull moose tag in Maine's zone 4, second season (Oct 11-16th). I joined my sil, my grandson, sil's dad (permittee) and sil's brother (subpermittee) where theyhunted around Baker Lake, Maine. They hired a guide as this was a new zone for them, the dad is older and he figured this might be his last shot. We set up camp on Friday, hunters and guide scouted and saw 4 bulls in 2 days. Unfortunatley, the weather turned, it got hot (75 deg.) and that was the last they saw till Friday morning at daybreak. It was a 100 yard free hand shot (.300 win mag) that set the bull on his haunches and the son's follow up shot put him down. While the moose was not a large one, it was a decent harvest and the hunters where happy. It was quickly gutted, loaded on a trailer and stuffed with ice. We broke camp fast and after a 3 hour logging road drive we hit Mllinocket, Maine for some more ice. The butcher was skinning it out that evening. He mentioned he had to throw out a complete moose because of the heat and time it took to get it to the butcher. Everyday my son in law, his 11 year old son Jake and myself went bird hunting. Nothing better than watching your grandson get his limit 3 times. Joe, guide and son Dan My 11 year old grandson Jake with one of many and his ss 20 gauge New "White Duck" tent fit 5 guys on cots with room for one more. My small wall tent, veteran of many ADK canoe in deer camps, I'm closing in on 100 nights in it. Son in law Jay with son Jake grilling grouse breasts with bacon and onions

  18. I long ago quit giving a crap what something I enjoy costs. No different than paying an extra 1.50$ for a gallon of gas at the pump when I’m filling the boat, Harley, snowmobile, wheeler or truck. I may bitch but I’m still going to do what I enjoy! I have no idea how many days I’ll have left on earth and I damn sure won’t let a few dollars get in the way of something I want to do, I’ve never heard of someone on their death bed say they wish they did less. As for supplies I have plenty, many many years worth of loadedammo even with my way above average shooting habits, and when that’s gone I’ll dust off the press’s and get into the components, I hate reloading but I will if I have to. As for the muzzleloader I got into blackhorn when it first came out and it was hard for me to find so when I did finally find it I bought 16lbs, when I found out Remington STs were the best primers for it I bought 10k of them. I won’t shoot all that powder or primers in 3 lifetimes but I’ll never be without, and I like that feeling. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  19. You realize gas prices are a 1.25 higher then last year? A direct result of a biden change . If we're trying to rebuild from this disaster covid ,wouldn't it be smart to keep prices low at least for another year til people got going again ? Something so simple ,this has got to be the most unamerican administration since, well since the obama years ,that racist prick and his wife were almost as bad as the current clown.

  20. I hate typing this but youre all my hunting buddies. I wounded a doe today. Tracked very little blood to @240 yards or so and then just lost it. Started taking trails, I had a friend with me, and also looking for a body in between trails. No luck. No beds. I rarely see my arrow fly but it was a wide open 20 yard shot and I blew it. Id love to say I think she will make it but I truly have no idea. I sent pics to several great hunters and all said the blood looked like liver but there was very little. I gave her four hours Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

  24. I was fortunate enough to shoot a 2.5 yo 8 for my first buck. We took photos of it with one of those disposable cameras and I couldn't tell you where those photos went but they are long gone. I surely would like to see them again. It was quite the local story amongst the hunting crew and neighbors, more so because of the shot ( I got lucky but killed the buck on a dead run 75 yards out with a smoothie Remington 870) and had witnesses to it that made the tale even bigger, lol. My mother had the good sense to get my buck mounted - everyone else insisted that we rack the antlers and screw it onto the wall - she ended up taking a second job for a few weeks to pay for it. I loved having that thing in my bedroom as a teen, but I don't think I had the appreciation for what my mom did back then, as I do now. She is a good one. I just redid my hunting room and that buck is one of the ones still sitting in the basement due to its lower stature/age/size, but this post is making me rethink that I should get him into the hunting room to display. Thanks for bringing this back up.

  30. Yeah. That's my issue. I have used the 22-250 on nuisance does in open fields and it was never an issue. HOWEVER, if I get a deer in the woods and it is giving me a quartering to shot, I want a bullet and caliber I KNOW will go through the shoulder and expend energy in the vitals with enough left over to get and exit hole.

  32. LOL I am in the work office today. I'll follow up with a photo of him. I hit him 3 of 3 times on that run. Once high back that stumbled him but he got back to full speed, the second follow-up shot went between his antler and ear, and exited out the opposite ear hole and third shot was when he was on the ground flopping. That deer did an end over end flip three times like a gymnast when I hit him in the head and he may have at one point been 8 feet off the ground due to the momentum. I had two other hunters witness it from afar and by the time the season was over that story was 10X more dramatic than it already was, lol. In fact, I saw one of those guys last week randomly, and they still brought it up, 25ish years later. I remember there being a photo with the entire crew but also neighbors from both sides of the farm - Probably 15 guys in there. Wish I had it. That same afternoon, I missed a doe three time 20 yards out standing still. I killed the poor tree in front of it though. I was so nervous I never saw the tree. Fond memories of not really knowing a damn thing and getting lucky.

  33. It comes down to what one likes to do, we all have our vices, you like to have a Genny Creme Ale from time to time and I like to target practice with my firearms from time to time. Nobody likes being gouged Wolc, live and learn as the old saying goes and I learned from the ammo shortages during the Obama years to buy and stock up on ammo when the prices are reasonable which is was during Trump's days so I am pretty much set to ride out the current knucklehead Democrat reign. 42. Don't rule out a bad SD card without verifying. New doesn't equate to good. SD cards are the second most common failure after low battery power. The image could be showing bad spots on the disc, and when it writes to that part, you get said image. Poor signal can also do that - which signal can vary from moment to moment. Measurements on the app and cam are point in time, too so don't over-rely on it. I have several places where a cam will work 10 feet from where it won't and then sometimes it'll send and sometimes it won't being on bleeding edge of service, when heavy cloud cover comes in. CMOS is alot less common - possible, but that isn't something you can fix if it is going bad. I'd look seriously at the first two, first. Treat the troubleshooting like fixing a car, start with the simplest, most common point of failure and then escalate once you have verified. Car won't start, but the battery is new. Do you automatically go to the starter being bad, or do you test the battery first to ensure nothing is wrong with it? You test the battery. There are a few other much more obscure causes, but not worth pursuing until you rule out #1 and #2. Welcome to cell cams. *Edit - View the SD card. If the full-size images are on the SD card like that, then the cell reception is OK. Replace the SD card with a new formatted one, and see if the problem persists. If it does, then you are onto more fatal scenarios. If the full size images are OK, then look at cell reception/modem/servers.
