  1. Saw one 2 1/2 year buck and a button buck and dead doe. It’s not the biggest, but I am happy with it. Always great full to God for the opportunity to harvest a deer.

  2. This year my son in laws dad pulled a bull moose tag in Maine's zone 4, second season (Oct 11-16th). I joined my sil, my grandson, sil's dad (permittee) and sil's brother (subpermittee) where theyhunted around Baker Lake, Maine. They hired a guide as this was a new zone for them, the dad is older and he figured this might be his last shot. We set up camp on Friday, hunters and guide scouted and saw 4 bulls in 2 days. Unfortunatley, the weather turned, it got hot (75 deg.) and that was the last they saw till Friday morning at daybreak. It was a 100 yard free hand shot (.300 win mag) that set the bull on his haunches and the son's follow up shot put him down. While the moose was not a large one, it was a decent harvest and the hunters where happy. It was quickly gutted, loaded on a trailer and stuffed with ice. We broke camp fast and after a 3 hour logging road drive we hit Mllinocket, Maine for some more ice. The butcher was skinning it out that evening. He mentioned he had to throw out a complete moose because of the heat and time it took to get it to the butcher. Everyday my son in law, his 11 year old son Jake and myself went bird hunting. Nothing better than watching your grandson get his limit 3 times. Joe, guide and son Dan My 11 year old grandson Jake with one of many and his ss 20 gauge New "White Duck" tent fit 5 guys on cots with room for one more. My small wall tent, veteran of many ADK canoe in deer camps, I'm closing in on 100 nights in it. Son in law Jay with son Jake grilling grouse breasts with bacon and onions

  6. Saw a doe and fawn around 8:30, then was packing up around 9:30 and caught movement about 75 yds away then nothing, sat for 15 more minutes and lowered my bow down and got halfway down the tree and saw a deer headed straight for me. Ended up being a 3 PT that someone had shot through the backstrap, it was all scabbed up and he seemed to be healthy. After he worked into the bedding I started climbing down again and got about 6' off the ground and saw another buck coming straight at me from another direction. He's a half rack 3 pt Ive had pictures of before, he came to downwind side at 20 yds and just looked around for 10 minutes then wandered off. I got some cool video, I'll put a few pics below. 7. Resided on my property first year I bought it. It was my second season hunting. Tagged out on a lesser buck (but my first wall mounter) in bow not really knowing better. I should have really just focused on this guy. He ended up chasing a doe right in front of a blind in the neighbors field day 2 of gun season. Dump shot. Live and learn.

  13. This is an old thread, but I just had to comment on how prophetic this post is/was! My Kimber in 7-08 loves Barnes 120 TTSX ammo. I've killed a lot of game with them. I wasn't able to find any all year for this hunting season. Having recently gotten back into reloading, I've been able to acquire the pills but still couldn't roll any for lack of primers. Ggrrr! Thankfully, I got a great deal on 3 boxes of Hornady American Whitetails pushing 139 Interlocks and they shoot every bit as well as the TTSXs. I'm just back from Wyoming, where they dropped this whitey buck at 230 yds where he stood. The lungs were both jelly and the heart was split in half.

  14. I think I was a senior in High School when this one was on the hoof. Everyone in the area was hunting him, and I was fortunate enough to see him from the road a couple of times in a bean field next to where I hunted. A local guy (who has since passed on) took him during first shotgun season that year. He was featured in the old “Rack Magazine” under the title “The Bone Gap Monster”. I wish I could find a back issue of that. He was quite a deer.

  16. The buck that I was most hoping to see back on this farm finally revealed himself this morning. I set a cam on a hot appletree on Sunday in the rain just hoping that this buck or something else good might be lurking. Ended up getting 900 pics in 3 nights. No history with this buck other than he showed up in late January several times on cam and then disappeared. I had one sighting of him back in July on a neighbors beanfield

  18. Great Idea for a thread!!! John Jeanneney was a great blood tracker, along with being my mentor, and sponsor in Deer Search. We started tracking together in 1998. I thought I was pretty good at tracking, until I met John. I learned so much from him, while on many, many blood lines. His book, "Dead On" is a must have for all hunters! Packed with useful blood tracking information. I could probably fill a few pages of this thread with just some of the things we have learned over the years, tracking wounded deer, with, and without dogs. I have always tried to help other hunters, with what I've learned over the years. And still do. John once told me, "we track more in one year than the average hunter will in two lifetimes". That adds up to seeing a lot of different things while on track. So, I'll add a couple that may help....... -After the shot, if the deer is not laying within sight, wait a minimum of 45 minutes before checking for sign. -No two lines are ever the same. Take stock of every situation, and make the best decisions, given all the information you have. -When in doubt back out!!! -If evidence shows a sure gut hit, wait at least six hours, before taking up the track. -Blood drops are not round! There will always be "little fingers" coming off the drop of blood if you look close. Those "fingers" will point to the direction of travel of the deer. Never walk on the blood trail!! This will help if you need to call a tracking dog.

  19. Aimed dead center through wing ,cleaning it up I had 4 “ of arrow and broadhead stuck in spine ,guess that’s why he didn’t move much .I’ve had them blow up like a feather bomb from an arrow to running 10’ and dropping dead ,to just taking out feathers and nothing else lol. This was my first stalked Turkey ,I spotted it entering the woods ,I quickly got up near the point of entry ,got inside the woods and started scanning around ,all the sudden I spotted the bird moving quick away from me ,I pulled back and sent it .He went 10 yards and dropped .

  20. I had a track myself this week. Thought it was a high double lung but it was back and she was quartering more than it thought. Arrow showed a good amount of blood, liver and gut. Backed out for two hours and just went back to start a track and see if blood. Had a good blood trail and luckily she never left the trail and was 150 yards away. But some thoughts/tips on tracking i use. - bring a roll of orange tape to mark off last blood spots on trees for daytime tracks - nighttime i take a battery lantern and that lantern never leaves last blood spot. I will go ahead and look around but that stays there to mark where i left off - bow hunting - cant express enough how much i like a lighted nock- so much easier to determine hit area as you can see it better - even in full light. (yes i was off on this hit a little - it was high as i thought but deer was quartered more than i thought. Also finding and determining from the arrow where the hit was is critical in knowing to back out or get on it - unless i see the deer dead in front of me - i will not make a move for 1/2 hour minimum as you never know how close the deer is if it went down and you cant see it. - bring a compass, should always have one but tracking a deer will put off your sense of direction quicker than anything. Many times after finding the deer and then first words are "ok where are we..." - bring in help at a certain point. If i am tracking it first i like to do it quiet and stealthy in case i can get close enough to spy it , but if i have been tracking and cannot find it and need to come back - bring another set of eyes with you. Many times me and a buddy as team usually figure it out - look for blood to be on both sides of where the deer went thru. if it is then this is a great sign usually. If it looks like a spray of droplets its generally lungs - if find no blood at hit sight look at least 40 yards around before determining. I shot a doe once with 12 G and nothing but a little white hair. Got dark and it was thick stuff. Backed out til morn and found an eaten doe 90 yards away . But what i didnt see was blood spray all over 30 yards into the woods and knew it was a good hit. Shouldve went after her right then. The white hair as i later found out, was mostly the under coat and thought my shot was low. - if deer is on a trail and tracks look like they are starting to slow or go from side to side on the trail its prob getting weak and wobbly - Luna and Kunox!

  22. Late post but hunted 3s management property after school today. Wind was whipping so I tucked into a ledge that holds acorns. At 5;00 winds started to die down at 5:45 I caught motion. Delicious doe! She worked straight to me and at 15 yards she was under a close tree so I drew back. She cleared the tree but was head on-no front pocket shots allowed from climbers. She cooperated and turned to her left and I was able to christen my new to me (courtesy of chef’s need for a new bow) Halon. 4 hours later…. I’m going to start a new thread about shot placement and tracking sign since she really threw me off. Happy to have her and the MEAT she will provide!!! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  23. The doe I just shot last night presented so much varied sign that I was about to call off the search and return hours later to only find her laying 10 yards away out of the range of my flashlight. It got me thinking, let's put here any stories of the shot and what follows - share your successes, failures, observations and as much information that will be helpful to future hunters regarding the shot angle. This is not a place for the infamous "void" discussion or being judgmental about shot angles, distances, etc. Stay objective with your posting and add as many pictures as you can. Suggested Format: Date - Time - Region - Weather - Weapon of choice (bullet/type of broadhead) From the Ground or How high off the ground Distance of shot - angle of deer Deer's reaction - direction of travel Hit site/First sign - pics man!!! Pics of blood - color, smell, location How long did you wait before tracking? Observations along the track? Recovered? Backed out? Lost? If recovered - entrance/exit wounds? What was hit? After reading Dead On by John Jeanneney I am fascinated as much by the post-shot work as I am the pre-shot work.

  24. Leaving in the morning for a canoe/fishing/hunting/hiking trip to the St Regis Canoe Area in the Adirondacks. I bought a new (used) canoe this past summer and other than a short trip in Alex Bay, this will be the maiden voyage. Hopefully the weather is not too cold and rainy. We will be hunting with bows, even though gun season opens there this weekend. I believe everything is packed a ready to go, just need to find a cigar shop on the way up, that was the only thing I forgot to get this week. We went to Lake Lila last year and I tried to only pack one half of what I brought last year. Pictures and a full trip report when I return. Thanks to @Robinfor the inspiration!

  29. This time of year, I spend a lot of time reading and responding to "4-H Project Record Books". It's really a lot of fun to read about the projects these kids have been doing, and seeing the learning that has occurred through their involvement. I see a lot of "I learned not to stab myself with the needle" and such. However, I see several that really warm my heart and make me proud to be doing the work that I'm doing. I recently read from an 11 year old's book "4-H makes me feel good about myself"...whew. Anyways, it's always special when I see growth in my Shooting Sports kids, case in point, the narrative below. This is from a girl who went from the lowest of lows when her bow malfunctioned at the NYS 4-H Shoot, and after members and volunteers all worked their butts off to get it back together, ended up taking 3rd place in Field Archery. I love it when these kids see the deeper lessons. I always say that we use Shooting Sports (or any number of other projects) as conduits to teach meaningful life skills. Stories like this let me know that I'm being successful in that.

I have a bunch in my pack at all times. I have seen them in Walmart on occasion. 46. I am getting ready to sneak up and try to catch a bear feeding on the gut pile from Tuesday’s doe. It was warm enough yesterday to make it ripe, and the wind is right this morning.

  47. It was too windy and warm for me to try to kill a buck this afternoon, so I went fishing instead, catching about a dozen smallmouth bass. The biggest one was my biggest of the year up here so far, and just 3” shy of the 22” I am looking for to mount. It looks like the wind will be from the south again tomorrow, so it will be back up to the gut pile again for me in the morning. As warm as it was today, that scent has got to be getting intense and I hope it will draw in a bear. There is rain in the forecast, but light winds, so the tree umbrella ought to work ok. I am also packing a plastic bag, so I don’t loose another heart. I wonder if pickled bear heart would be good ? I am going to give the rattle bag a shot, if it’s not too painfull on my blistered hands (from pile driving the snow fence stakes this morning). The last time I rattled up there about 4 years ago, I didn’t fool any bucks, but I did fool the guy from the end of the lake who thought he was walking in to a real buck fight. At first I thought he was a bear, on its hind legs, coming up out of the swamp. His chartreuse hat gave him away. He will need to ditch that for blaze orange or pink per the new rules this year.
