  4. Man I used to love hunting alone when I was young. I moved to NY in my early 20s and, did so for years… then a wife, kids and Many years later my boys became old enough to hunt. many years of hunting with them changed everything. They were the absolute best hunting days and years of my life. Now they are married, having babies and buying homes, and working too much. This year my youngest didn’t even buy a license. He has a brand new rifle and bow he bought earlier this year, neither have been shot and won’t be this year, he’s just too busy. New house and Baby on the way!!!! For the first time since 2002 I will be hunting alone. As sad as it is for me, I couldn’t be happier or more proud that my boys are building amazing lives for themselves. This is part of why I haven’t been motivate to hunt this year, but I’m thinking that’s all going to change tomorrow morning! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  11. A co-worker just punched his tag on a 120" 8 here in Monroe County. Said there was alot of seeking behavior in his area this AM. Bucks roaming and signposting but no major buck/doe interactions.

  12. So I had a pretty rough hunt last night…. Got in the stand around 4, I hunt land locked public land behind my brother in laws house. A new neighbor of his wants to get into bow hunting and i have been mentoring him and letting him use some of my stands. At 4:40 he texts and says I’m gunna hunt…. Kind of late to be walking in but what ever…. I send him to a stand close to the house for a easy slip in….. well he gets lost and at 4:52 he comes crashing by the stand I’m in….. I got his attention and sent him on his way. At this point I’m a little annoyed because I have clearly marked trails to each stand that I’ve asked repeatedly he doesn’t deviate from… Any way at 6:00 I see movement to my right. I then see it’s coming toward me and see the flash of bone through the trees… he makes his way along the brush line in front of me, keeping the brush between him and I. He finally presents me with a shot I should have never taken. He was standing behind the log pictured which is at 35 yards… I ranged him at 40 and decided if I shoot i gotta aim on the low side… this way if I miss I hit the log and don’t wound him… we’ll that’s exactly what happened. He didn’t spook but just kind of trotted off. As for the new Hunter I have calmed down and just need to understand he is new and I will have to do my best to keep giving advise. Good news is the log was pretty rotten and no damage to arrow or broadhead. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  13. Michael welcome aboard.....I am guessing a little more detail is needed. Do you have a lease or property you own? Do you only hunt state land or wma's? Bow, Gun, muzzleloader. Great group of guys here...just think your first post was lacking some detail. Sent from my SM-A716V using Tapatalk

  14. I have been after this doe for a few years now, and she bested me on each previous attempt, as recently as last Sunday morning. Her luck ran out at about 8:00 this morning. None of the bucks that I have killed in the past were as difficult as this old mother. Had I not cleared the leaves under my seat, due to an unfortunate accident the night before, she would have escaped again. TC omega 50 cal Hornady 240 gr XTP , 100 gr 777 to the shoulder blade from 35 yards took her out. I did not see the two young ones with her until she was in her death throes. They looked to be pretty good sized and I hope they make it ok on their own.

  15. The buck that I was most hoping to see back on this farm finally revealed himself this morning. I set a cam on a hot appletree on Sunday in the rain just hoping that this buck or something else good might be lurking. Ended up getting 900 pics in 3 nights. No history with this buck other than he showed up in late January several times on cam and then disappeared. I had one sighting of him back in July on a neighbors beanfield

  16. Last day of northern muzzleloader. I decided I would come out and wack a doe.. a few have been coming out in a corner of a freshly chopped corn field on public land every evening. I havnt seen a person here yet this year. Wouldn't you know it .2 persons have that field pretty well covered. So I'm sitting in a little drainage ditch 100 yds off the rd . Not sure if I will tackle one or shoot it, they will be close. A couple good trails and scrapes behind me. I guess we will see. May be my lucky day.. my gf convinced me to go to the casino this afternoon (I will go 1 or 2 times every couple years) I won $1500.. let's see if it transfers over to my hunting luck..;)

  17. Didn’t want to use this lame homemade cam mount my hunting partner made. He insisted. LOL. At least we will fix it tomorrow. This guy has daylighted on two cams in the morning back to back within 10 yards of our stands there. Risky business.

  18. He might have come in on a string but if he was that close to my stand he would have been going out on a rope. You have more discipline than I.

  19. I have two really nice bucks in front of me…….and close!! Too bad I’m under the weather and not able to hunt. Stuffed bucks are all I can hang my hat on for a bit. Oh and you guys keep my spirits up with your hunt reports.

  20. Got out for a day of perch fishing on Wednesday. Filled a cooler, caught a few smallmouth, a skinny pike and an eel. That was a first. It didn't exactly fight hard, but it was heavy. Kinda wish I knew how to prepare one so I could give it a try. Might be my last trip out, only because it's deer season and the weather is getting right. Or I may see if I can fit in both. We'll see.

  22. My SIL made a few calls and found out who the two guys are . The father of one of the riders said they won't be riding on her property any more . One of her neighbors said he was glad she found out who they are as he found ATV tracks on his property and wasn't happy about it .

  23. The Savage Axis, is a great shooting rifle that won't break the bank at all. Even comes with a scope! Can upgrade the optics, and the trigger spring at another time, to make it even better! I have one in 7mm-08. that has proven itself well.

  27. I agree with this to a degree, but I believe weather Trumps everything with deer hunting. I may be wrong, i am much of the time. tonight in Chautauqua county there will be t-storms and clouds all night. No lazy, brightly lit fields for deer to relax and feed in. I’m betting on cold temps and clearing skies to bring them out of cover to feed in The AM. Then again, I honestly don’t care if I sit for 4 hours and look at trees, I’m just ready for some tree-time and a break from work. It has been a VERY busy year. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  28. Finished products… the pistachios will get handed out to a few friends and the smoked shank meat is in the freezer, destined to be a ragout on a cold snowy day this winter.

  29. Saw one 2 1/2 year buck and a button buck and dead doe. It’s not the biggest, but I am happy with it. Always great full to God for the opportunity to harvest a deer.

  30. Partner and I are in stands. We can see one of our target bucks bedded 80 yards into neighbor. Sun is bouncing off his rack. Problem is we’re 300 yards away from him and only one stand in the area that is likely on the wrong side of the path he will take to our farm. Pretty confident he just heads straight south. Which the wind will allow us to set up on. Trying to figure out an option.

  33. Have to work so climbed down. Went to step over a squishy mud puddle , look up and oops 3 good doe staring at me at 40. They gently booted. Half ass tails up. Walked another 125 yards and there they were feeding in corner of the field. Current temp of 47. Wish I could have stayed all day.

  34. I find that if I decide to shoot and say man that's close to that tree I hit the tree 90 percent of the time. I think you actually focus on what you don't want to hit so you hit it!!. Like psyching yourself out before you even go for the shot.

  35. I had the luxury of chasing (2) different bucks at the same time on the same property that ended up dying/dissappearing at age 9.5 and 10.5 yrs old. I Have the history every year to prove it. Chasing bucks like these teaches you how to really hone in on what big bucks do and why. I finally crossed paths with The Ghost after passing him in 2012, again during late October 2018, It just felt right so I went with my gut.. And i misjudged yardage and sent an arrow an inch over his back. And the other buck, Chunk, was in my wheel house more often than the other so I had to patiently wait the right times and weather to hunt him. Over a couple years I narrowed his daily patterns down to almost a T.. But my youngest child became quite ill when the stars really lined up for this buck, but I gave up hunting for the season a skids come first.. And My homework proved right... He should have died by my arrow on many occassions.. ( I believe he got poached after dark at the end of season) as I knew what this deer did every season.. and he was never seen again after the last week of season, and the tresspassing and poaching greatly increased in the area... Cell cams and regular cams on access paths proved this.. Heres a brief part of our history... and I miss it dearly.. Buck 1 is The Ghost, he died at 9.5yrs on Day 1 of gun season Buck 2 is Chunk, he disappeared at 10.5yrs (6" and 6-5/8" bases)

  36. Great topic. #1. Chill. Relax. Wait for awhile. Keep a calm focus. Repeat. 2. Survey the situation and think smart. You're 95% of the way there. Don't muck up the last part by being in a hurry. 3. Bring a weapon! To finish the job if need be. If their head is up when you find them shoot them again. No, don't stab them with a knife. 4. Max 2 people on a track. Another set of eyes is always best. One finds blood, the other marks the last spot and scans. 5. See #1.

  38. Been back home for a day to check on the homestead and grab the rifles. Headed back north in am until… Found a bunch of sign, a lot more than I would have thought usually it’s behind up there especially with the weather. Looks like some cold frosty mornings coming should be a great start to gun season. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  41. Doe to fill the freezer back up. Tonite it just felt like the perfect night. I just knew something was gonna come out. Two doe came out just after 6pm right down the trail like they read the script. I shot a bit far back and it exited back so she must have been quartered more than I thought. Backed out for a couple hours then went back to just see if any blood trail. Had a good blood trail so kept going and it started getting just a few drops. But she was laying there right in the trail and went about 150 yards. Happy to get a good early doe!
