  2. This is my favorite recipe and have it for my birthday every year,, you won't regret making these only that you didn't make sooner Stuffed venison backstraps. Super simple and super delicious. Slice a backstrap in half for two good sized portions. Then carefully cut meat (like a jelly roll) so that it is somewhat flat. Place meat on wax paper, cover with plastic wrap and flatten meat with a mallet. Set aside. Filling is two blocks of softened cream cheese, six bulbs of freshly chopped garlic, fresh cracked pepper, and three to four finely diced jalapeno peppers. Spread on meat and cover with shredded extra sharp cheddar cheese. Roll meat length wise like a jelly roll. Wrap backstraps in bacon (I prefer to make a bacon weave) and smoke over wet hickory chips for 30 minutes. Then finish over hot lump charcoal, about five minutes per side, until bacon begins to crisp. Glaze backstraps with a pastry brush during final five minutes. Glaze consists of eight ounces of seedless blackberry jam, two shots of bourbon, fresh cracked pepper and a tbsp butter. Heat in small sauce pan and whisk until jam has liquified. Feel free to add more bourbon if not strong enough for you. I prefer to use Knob Creek Smoked Maple Bourbon for a delicious taste. Take backstraps off the grill and let rest ten minutes to let cheese come together so they won't be runny. Slice and enjoy quickly because these won't sit around for long! Serve with remaining glaze too!

  4. The adventure started around 4:45.....put an almost perfect stalk on a group of doe at the opposite end of grapes.... they busted us after we closed to under 35 yards and I was waiting at full darw for the one to clear the row my sin and I were using for cover.....now we moved on to our double ladder stand and the field behind us is covered in doe feeding. One clown has entered the picture and is bumping them all over the place. Lost count at 10+ in the field. Sent from my SM-A716V using Tapatalk

  5. I hunted this morning and small bucks are chasing like crazy but bigger bucks still mostly focused on food with a little half ass rutting activity. Tonight probably the better hunt but I have work obligations unfortunately. On the bright side, I pulled some cards and found one of the best 2 year old I’ve seen. He’s pretty regular on cam so hopefully he doesn’t venture far. I’d love to see what he turns into Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  6. Dan Infalt I knocked on the door and heard a shout from inside. "Come on in". The old man was in his chair, staring out the window like a dog that never gets out of his kennel. I walked over to the freezer and started putting packages of deer meat inside. I said "you want me to leave a pack thawing?" His eyes never left the window... He said "No, Jimmy probably has something planned". I sat next to the old hunter and stared at the trees in the park with him. I asked him some questions like "You eat all that bear meat I brought you? Jimmy taking good care of you? etc.. He would just mumble "yea", and never look away from the window. Then he broke the silence after a few minutes of just staring and said, "Tell me about the hunt for that buck, He listened intently, but still never made eye contact. His eyes got glassy, as if he was about to shed a tear. He interrupted me and said, "You know, I was quite the hunter in my day". I said "I know"... He finally turned to me with a sad distressed look on his face and stared right into my eyes and said "Boy, you don't know how good you got it, The days go fast at your age, and you think you have forever. A man only has so many years in his prime. Don't ever waste a day... Not even one... I know you would rather get out in the woods than spend your time with an old cripple, get out of here, and go have some fun. He turned back to the window and never said goodbye, and never thanked me... He meant well. He was just lost in whatever he was seeing out that window. His message came loud and clear when I got the call from Jimmy. That was the last time I saw the old man. My old friend's message still echo's in my mind... There comes a point in life where you realize the size of the buck will never equal the size of the adventure. One day your whole life might revolve around staring out a window remembering those adventures... Make sure you have a few to remember.

  20. I never fault anyone for shooting a buck, regardless of what antlers it has. People should shoot what makes them happy. What makes me happy is different than the next guy and I don’t expect anyone else to hunt like I do. One isn’t right or wrong. I hope the neighbors don’t kill that buck but if they do I’ll still go over and congratulate them Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  26. Fun hunt tonight. Finally saw one of the big boys in daylight. A big 8 stepped into the field about 80 yards away to check out a small buck that was harassing a doe. He then quickly decided it’s too early in the season to be in the wide open so he went right back into the thick stuff. I ended up passing on a spike and two does because they were by themselves and looked small. I suck a judging doe size unless it’s a really big doe.

  27. My plan today was to get to my spot early wait until gray light and still hunt my way until I came across scrapes or freshest sign I could. First step was getting over the stream that was knee deep or higher every where and running very fast. Eventually I made it to where a tree had fallen across the stream and very carefully inched across it. I still hunted 3/4mile around with very little sign. I was starting to get discouraged but kept going then finally the rubs picked up and all led to a spot I had scouted over the summer and new of some buck beds in that general area. I was at the spot I thought would put me in the game. As I was trying to pick out a tree to climb I noticed movement to my right and it ended up being a small 3 pt cruising with his nose to the ground. Seeing the trail he took I split the difference between his trail and another above me giving me a 25 yard shot to both. I was finally setup at 930 and ready to hunt. I was setup roughly 60 yards from a big swamp At about 10 I thought I could here something in the direction the blue jays were making a racket but couldn't see anything. So I hit the grunt tube 4 or 5 times. At about 1015 I saw movement coming up from the swamp and could tell right away it was bigger than the 3 pt in both body and horns. He started to walk away from me so I hit the grunt tube and snort wheezed. He stopped on a dime turned my direction and started making rubs and scrapes. He held up at 45 yards and had a snack of green leaves. Eventually he made it to 18 yards behind 2 trees so I could draw . Only problem was he was heading straight at me and was preparing myself for a possible straight on shot. Once he got to 10yards he had me picked out in the tree and took a small step to his right opening up the front pocket for a shot. Before he could bolt the arrow was off and up to the fletching. Instantly blood sprayed out and he bounced off some trees. he went to make it up a small bank but did a back flip. He went maybe 60yrds total before he died. So here was the only negative on the morning. After the shot I turned to put my bow back on the hanger when I hear a stick snap. I look up and there is a 80-100inch buck staring at me at 40yrds. All I could do was laugh. Didn't think in a million years there would of been a second buck. He new something wasn't right but couldn't figure it out. I will be after him come gun season. I will always be checking to make sure there are no other deer in the area. I was so focused on the buck I took I never heard the bigger dear come in. 1/2 mile drag through a nasty swamp took forever but he's home and hanging in the garage. I have to work the next 3 days so I think I'm going to run him to a local butcher. Sorry for the long post. Ill update it later with pictures.

  28. Had a huge lone doe walk by at 12 yards at 5:30. Just don’t have many does around, so I swore I wouldn’t shoot any this year. Sure was having some bad thoughts though! LOL Not today Satan, not today… Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  30. I prefer to sit quietly. Unless I happen to see a deer that will not pass by within range. Then I'll try anything! Grunt Call, Snort Wheeze, Rattle Bag, Can Call??? Nothing to lose at that point, because I won't get a shot anyways, unless he changes course. I never had much luck, or results from blind calling. But seems others have.

  31. Today my amazing wife and I welcomed our second little girl into this world. I just wanted to show off this beautiful little chunker. Everyone is happy, healthy, and we’re looking forward to taking her home to meet her big sister tomorrow. I will say I read a lot of the “Live From the Woods” posts today to help distract from the anxiety:)

  33. The trick to fixing this issue is to make sure the ingredients are at room temp when you go to cook it. If you pull it from the refrigerator and throw it on the heat it will do as you say.
