  1. This morning, biggest buck taken off the farm in a few years! Shot by my partners daughter, my God daughter. I think it's the buck I missed last Monday? Couldn't have worked out better. So happy for her! I'm sorry I wasn't there. I haven't hunted since Thanksgiving. Dealing with some issues. My season may be over.

  2. More meat for the freezer. Just started walking out back at 8, as last night was a late night if bowling and beverages. Made 1/4 of the way to the stand i was going to, slowly walking and scanning. Look left and 80 yards away a lage group of doe are watching me. Raise the gun and freezer queen down.

  5. I got a doe this morning about an hour after I shot at a coyote. I went back to my house and grabbed my younger helper to help me track her. Turns out we didn't have to track to much. She basically jumped into my corn foodplot and died about 8 yards from where I shot her but I couldn't tell that from where I was when I shot.

  7. I scored yesterday at my friend's place in Chautauqua. Not my biggest, but this guy has a big body. I was doing a slow stalk to try and move something up the hill to my buddy and I caught this guy in his bed. He never saw me as he was distracted by a shot to the north, I caught him turn his head at the sound of the shot. He was bedded in some thick stuff so I didn't have anything but head to shoot at. I could only see 1 side of the rack and it looked like at least an 8 pt so I put it on the white spot on his throat and fired. He never got up, I probably ruined most of the neck roast. 67 yd shot with 30-06. Perfect weather for hanging so I probably won't cut him up until Wed? It's great not having to drag him the 3/4 mike back to the truck!

  11. This busted up 8 pointer cruised thru the woods behind my new tree stand 5 minutes after sunset. I wanted to save my buck tag for an Adirondack trip next weekend, so I was looking for one that had at least 4 points on a side. He still had 5 on the right, but only three on the left, having lost that side’s brow and g-3. No big deal for me, being mostly a meat guy, and with a 42-1/4” chest girth, he should provide plenty of that. When he stopped broadside at 50 yards, his front and rear ends were hidden behind big trees. The 1.5 Weaver on my old Ithaca 37 16 ga was fogged over from the cold and snow. I brushed the inside lens with glove, still all grey, then brushed the outside lens. Fortunately, he kept still long enough for me to get the scope cleared. I held as close as I dared to the front tree. The slug caught him right about on the diaphragm, midway up. He mule kicked and left a decent blood trail in the snow from the entry hole. It took me a while to find the trail as there was just a light dusting of snow. He piled up after about 50 yards. I did a quick gut job in the dark and didn’t save the nuts. I found the slug intact inside when I got him home and did a thougrough cleaning. It must have stopped against a rib on the outboard side.

  13. I’ve been hunting deer since I was 12. Today’s hunt though, in Ohio, was the wildest 2.5 hour sit I have ever had. Cams have been up ticking and gun season starts Monday. I shot down here and got in town this afternoon. Hoping to beat the guns. I got some daylight images this morning on a ridge with a now empty apple grove. I have a few stands in the bottom, one in the middle of the bottom and one low in a field corner. I snuck into the field corner one and within 10 minutes noticed a doe, then two, then three, and a deep guttural grunt behind them. Immediate shooter about 60 yards out. For the next thirty minutes this wide 8 that we have pics of tends these two adult does while a doe young of year hangs out. A satellite basket rack was kept at bay the whole time. The wide 8 made scrapes, rubbed a tree, and while doing so one of the does bedded 20 yards from me in the clear in a shooting lane through the brush. The wide 8 finally came toward her but was behind a large oak. All of this over 30 minutes. By now my blood pressure finally settled and ready to go. One. More. Step. Out of the corner of my eye I spot a sixth deer drop down the ridge. Immediately I could see it was the buck from the morning images. A true giant. He was 60 yards out, closing fast. The wide buck immediately turned around, and those two bucks hit antlers so hard it sounded like a .22 going off. The other deer scattered as if I had sent a slug down range. These two bucks get into an Ali-Frazier brawl 35 yards from me and I have no shot through the brush and branches. I kept trying to find a hole but every time I did, they moved. Eventually after 30 seconds-minute, the wide 8 gets run off with the taller buck en route. I sat there dejected and in shock. 30 minutes later, the taller 8 comes back with the two does and makes a U circuit around my other stand that is in the bottom. They disappear into the thick stuff and it was silent again. Two more does in the field to close out the evening but in the end, I saw two very mature bucks get into a huge brawl. I still cannot believe I couldn’t get a shot. Never seen anything like it and doubt I will ever again. Would have been nice to send it.

  15. Time-wise, I think this should be first in the thread! It was all over at 705 am in opening day. Was sitting in the edge of thick crud/swampy area, heard a couple grunts. Doe comes out of the pines, heads away from me towards the swamp. Gave her a couple of good big grunts, she turned around and came back on a string, and brought her boyfriend with her. He came in hot, grunting and thrashing, all stuff legged. Very enjoyable hunt, everything you'd want. Not the biggest deer on the farm, but I'm happy! I'm pretty sure he's the same buck I saw the day before and said I would pass. Oh well, chest freezer has 15 points in it.

  17. Daughter’s buck; Stephanie got in the same stand that we got two bucks from already. She had some quick activity in the field with the same does and spikes that we’ve been seeing. She had one group of does at 150 yds that were hanging around feeding for about 15 minutes when this guy stepped out at the far tree line. She said he wasn’t going after the does but was interested in them, just hanging around watching them. After a couple of minutes he gave her a perfect pose at about 140 yds. Nice 9 pointer dropped in place with a .270. So daughter’s family takes home 2 bucks and a doe from their annual visit. Great week! Granddaughter Evelyn, the Chief Whitetail Inspector approves of mommy’s buck! Had trailcam pics of her buck too. Daughter likes to edit Josh Allen jumping over things photos, lol.

  19. I hunted gman/Greg's today. Did a very cold all day sit. I seen 7 deer. 2 small bucks 2 doe 2 button bucks one unknown and a bobcat. I seen everything between 11&2. The one doe was huge and broadside at 15 yards to bad most people got debited doe tags for the area this year. Sure was a cold but relaxing day.

  20. Not sure how to word this because disappointment is wrong and regret is wrong but it’s definitely mixed emotions. Just before 8am I spotted a lone deer to my east 100 yards out but no shot then it disappeared into the thick stuff. I kept my eye on that area hopeful that it would angle my way which it did. A little after 8 I can now see 3 or 4 deer working towards one of my shooting lanes. Gun up scope dialed in I wait. First one to pop through is a small yearling. The second one into the lane is twice the size easily. I check the head for antlers don’t see anything steady the cross hairs over the vitals and squeeze the trigger. Deer I shot jumps and takes off 30 yards where I’m pretty sure I see it go down. The others all scramble further away. I wait 2 hours to get down before I go and investigate. Just as I expected the deer went 30 yards and went down. Here’s where the mixed emotions come in. Its a buck… a spike buck, barely legal to be tagged as a buck. 3” on one side and 3.5” on the other side. I never saw the antlers on his head through the scope had I seen them I would have passed on him. I’m very happy for a good shot that was a quick kill. I’m happy for the meat that will be put in the freezer. I’ll have a beer to celebrate the harvest as all deer big or small should be celebrated. He’s hung up and I’m back out for the evening sit in the same spot. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  21. Can’t believe I haven’t seen this thread until now! You guys are nailing some great advice here. There are a couple of hits that should be pushed immediately for your best chance of a recovery. These are leg hits and shoulder hits. Sometimes you can get a deer to bleed out through the bone marrow on a leg hit, or at least weaken it enough to get you close for a finishing shot. Shoulder hits can be even tougher….sometimes you catch up, sometimes you don’t. Attached is a picture we pulled off a game camera as we pushed this shoulder shot buck over a mile. The next picture was of Luna. He was 3 minutes ahead of us and we never caught up. Of course pushing a deer that distance can lead to property line issues. Always a good idea to have neighbors phone numbers ahead of time or have a standing agreement on entering to track. Even with the agreement, most people appreciate a courtesy call. Just a quick point about pushing deer that should be left alone….liver and gutshot. It’s crucial to avoid the temptation to go in too early. Good rules of thumb are 6 hours for liver and 12 for gutshot. Sure, everyone has stories of recovering deer with these injuries much earlier than that, but there are more stories of non recovered deer due to going in early. Lots of people tell me they want to track right away because they have a coyote problem. A good way to look at this is, if you don’t push it, usually they’ll bed down within a couple hundred yards. If you do push them, they can literally go miles. Coyotes have a much smaller chance of cutting the track of a wounded deer if the track is only a few hundred yards long as opposed to the much longer track of a pushed deer. As has been mentioned many times already, throw a roll of tape in your pack. Even if the blood is heavy and obvious, throw a marker up every now and then so you look back and see the line. If you leave the deer overnight, it’s amazing the number of times the hunter can’t find blood the next day. Also, if you call a dog in, trackers love to see their dog on the line as long as possible to learn the scent of that individual deer before the blood stops. I know this has been mentioned too, but it’s worth repeating…..walk to the side of the bloodtrail, not on it! The last point I’ll make is one of the biggest if you’re bringing in a dog……DO NOT GRID SEARCH when you lose blood. You and your buddies will have scent from the blood and scent from the deers wound on you, leaving false trails throughout the woods. Someone saying they haven’t grid searched is music to a trackers ear! (And the dog will quickly show the handler if this is true or not!) Pic of a piece of a leg bone. Will be rounded on one side. The neck/brisket wound is an old injury that the deer had survived.

  23. Had too sit this season out...had severe case of Lymes which put me in hospital for 3 weeks and visits to VA also. So, now after about 3 months from all meds for all the stuff , feeling much better---but it was hell and back 100 times, wouldn't wish it on anybody. So, wanted to thank all you guys for the posts of great pics, looks like some real beauties, but seems like nowhere near the hunters or harvests as past years- my guess is just youngsters not learning about hunting, ticks, sick deer. I only hunt deer ( over the last 50 yrs)---usually got what I wanted each year---had acess to over 150 acres-my Dad and I only hunted there -Hudson Valley area...We had a gun store and trap range for 40 years after we were both out of military---always all kind of hunting and shots heard. Never heard a single shot fired all season-What say y'all???

  26. Yes, lots of movement last 24 hours. Saw him from the stand yesterday PM. Chose south this AM. 32 and Snow, but snow is melting. Everything is wet down to base layers. Bah, made it to 10 at least. Have to dry out but will be going back in as soon as possible. Probably should have chose North based on the lone BB I had come in at 5 yards and hang out. Did see one doe about 100 yards out around 830. North was probably it this AM. Dang.

  28. I had the honor this afternoon of guiding a veteran, Tim, on a deer hunt through Wounded Warriors Outdoor Adventures. He was brought to the farm we just sold, but have retained hunting rights to. Bob Giordano and his buddy Phil brought Tim out in a trailer since he’s confined to a scooter. Our adventure started with the Jeep and trailer getting stuck in the mud on the way up to the ground blind, so I walked back for the tractor and towed them up there. After getting situated in the blind, we stashed the tractor and the trailer on the backside of the tree line and Bob and Phil left. Tim and I started getting acquainted as we waited for a deer to show itself. Tim had tags for either sex. I was amazed when Tim shared that he had been placed under hospice care today. His attitude and demeanor were such that you would never guess that was the case. I hope and pray I half of his grace when it’s my turn. We visited for about an hour or so when Tim said “there’s a deer”. I looked and saw a 4 pointer in the brassicas, 75 yards in front of us. I started videoing on my phone and Tim settled in and took the shot. The buck did a little dance and looked around, then started eating again. I told Tim to shoot again and he said “he’s down”. I should mention at this point that Tim is blind in one eye. I quickly scanned the brassicas and the only deer there was still standing. I told Tim he must see a rock on the edge of the field, and to shoot again. He shot and hit the buck, which then ran into our woods. It was snowing pretty good, so I told him I’m going to check for sign before it got covered in snow. When I got out of the blind, I saw a deer down in the soybean field, 125 yards away. It was a doe and she had been in the blind spot between windows in the blind and I couldn’t see her from my position. And yes, I have two good eyes. I found one drop of blood in the field, and 10 yards into the woods I saw the buck get out of a bed and run 50 yards and bed down again. My nephew (Ralph) was in a blind in the woods only 150 yards away, so I told him to get ready I was going to push the buck to him. The buck took off towards him, then bedded down again 40 yards later. At this point I called Ralph and told him to climb down and work his way towards us. About 10 minutes later the buck went on alert as Ralph approached, then got up and ran another short distance before bedding again. Ralph got on him and soon put him out of his misery. I told Ralph I could call the DEC and explain what happened and they may come and take it so he wouldn’t have to use his tag. He graciously used his tag to help a fellow vet out. Big shoutout to Mike Fennessey for the processing job he’s going to do for Tim. Tim’s last hunt and he shot two deer!

  36. Specs. 30.06. Shooting 150grn. Hornaday super formance. Had a doe come in. Took a 50 yard shot. Doe was slightly quartering towards me. At the shot doe took off down a hill. I gave it 15 minute and went to look at the shot site. Leaves were kicked up and one spot of blood the size of a pencil eraser. Only thing I could follow was the tracks in the snow. I followed the the track for 30-40 yards and saw no blood on the snow so I circled back to make sure i was on the correct track. I was, so I then went back to where I left the track before and continued on. At 85 yards I saw a couple pin pricks of blood on the snow. At 100 yards I looked up to see the doe dead 30 yards ahead. The last 10 yards had a little more blood. I say more but you still had to get low and look for it. It looked like it was spray coming out of her nose. The shot was 6 inches back from the shoulder on entrance and the exit wound is in the picture. You can see the fat that plugged the hole. The shot took out the onside lung and took out half the liver. The lung was pretty much gone. You could see the running track didnt look correct in the snow was kinda all over the place. Not straight like you would think. Just for my own knowledge I went back when it was getting dark and tried a flashlight in the snow. I was able to pick up a few more spots of blood on the snow and some on the trees that I had missed. None were bigger than a flannel shirt button though. This was a track that you easily could have said I just grazed her she will be fine. It made me second guess my shot for sure.

  37. So last night my friends and I had a wagyu feast. Unreal! We Started with a 45 day aged ribeye. Then we moved to a 50/50 wagyu-holstein from Australia. We did half of this cut nigiri style with a glaze from Japan. Then we ended with A5 wagyu from Japan. These were the best cuts of meat I have ever eaten with the 50/50 wagyu-holstein being the champ. The pics should be in order of how I listed.

  39. Sitting till dark in a different spot trying to catch one more coming into the field. I have signal, so here's the story from the deer earlier. I was walking in around 2 for the pm sit. There's a strong WNW wind. My plan was to walk south along the tree line all the way to the bottom of the field, then still hunt into the wind heading west until i hit the hedge row, then North up the hedge row until getting to my spot where I can watch the creek that runs along the north edge of the field. Wind would be in my favor for most of that walk. I'm about 300yds in along that tree line when a buck pops up 10 feet in front of me! I was watching him as motionless as i could. My wind was going right to him and he was watching me. I expected him to bolt any second. It was weird though. He just sat there and appeared to be a little off balance. I'm thinking he might have been injured. After two or three minutes with my wind in his face and him watching me, i slowly brought the gun up. Put the X on his chest and pulled the trigger and watched him flop over. I'll watch for sign of an earlier injury when I get him home. I'm stoked that i got one for the freezer. Between work and family obligations, i won't have many more chances to get out this season. Grateful for the harvest.
