  1. Shot a dandy about an hour ago. Little blood on impact. About 50 yards have piles of blood. Then a decent blood trail as he is walking down hill. Marked spot and backed out. Waiting for help to arrive. Like to have eyes up and another set on trail.

  2. I'm heading in. Against Dr's orders and good judgment. I can't just not go! Spot I'm headed to, is only a couple hundred yards from where I'll park. My hunting partner and family, are only a text away, should I need help. I've hunted six days so far in gun season. Seen deer in every sit. Very unusual for here! Not going to be very selective at this point! Best of luck to all going out today!

  5. In at a little 9 ft stand we use for bow mostly. Planted a food plot here and it is long gone. Lots of deer sign on the way in. There is a nice scrape 12 yards away. No shots here over 38 yards so brought the 12.

  6. 12/3/21 Kunox and I had quite the adventure today! I was called by a hunter that had shot a nice buck late yesterday afternoon in the mountains. He had tracked it following a steady bloodtrail, and at 800 yards in heavy cover he was within 10 yards off it before it took off. He decided at that point to back out for the night and called me. We arrived at 7:30 this morning with 24 degrees and a 14 mph wind. The hunter got us going on the track, then went to reposition the truck, and we met at last blood. Kunox kept right on trucking from that point, showing us a little blood here and there under last night’s snow. At one point we had about a 35 minute delay when we had a property line issue and no cell service. The hunter walked out and spoke with the landowner and was granted permission to enter. We did not find a bed until the 2.37 mile mark. Shortly after that we found 3 more close together. The last one had fresh blood leading away from it, and from that point on the trail could be followed quickly and easily. Twice we saw the buck in shooting range, but no shot was available due to thick cover. Somewhere along the way, Kunox had lost a bootie and cut his paw on the jagged ice, so I took one off another paw to put on there to protect it. Unfortunately he cut that paw too….nothing serious. At this point he became a passenger and I carried him the rest of the day. The fresh blood from the bucks wounded rear leg was very easy to follow, as was the drag mark which started from the last bed. When I picked Kunox up, I moved the hunter to the front with his rifle. At the 3.7 mile mark, the hunter spotted the buck bedded down and was able to put him out of his misery. Kunox was shivering badly so we got a fire going to warm him up before the drag/hike out. I needed to carry Kunox, so the hunter had to drag by himself, and while dragging through a swampy area, he stepped in a hole and wrenched his knee. Shortly after that, we decided to hang the buck in a tree and hike out. Kunox was not happy with our decision, but he said goodbye to HIS buck. Kunox weighs 24 pounds, and I think 23 pounds of him is heart!

  7. AGAIN, by our more than gracious host, we were invited down for the rifle season opener. We were greeted by a camp full of wonderful folks, who treated us like family. We could only hunt Saturday so I packed enough snacks to hold us over for a potential "dark to dark" At first shooting light, I let Kaiden hit the grunt tube. We've practiced a bunch and the kid just loves the tube. After a series of buck grunts and doe bleats, Kaiden sat down and said " and now we wait " like Rut Daniel's always does. This kid has a sense of humor and I have no idea where he gets it. Not 5 minutes later, 2 legal bucks were coming in hot looking for the noise maker. Unfortunately, they had us pinned and were very spooky. Kaiden was able to get on both bucks but I could see there was enough brush between them to not be sure of a clean shot. I had him hold off, which was so tough to do, but the right thing ( IMO ) when mentoring a beginner. The bucks eventually worked back I to the thick stuff and never presented a shot. We ended up sitting dark to dark, which is a feat for a 7yr old, and seeing a pile of deer. Only a doe gave us a perfect opportunity, but we didn't have a doe tag and Kaiden is dead set on a buck. One other buck cruised through behind us but again was a bit thick and far to take a shot. Kaiden had my late grandfather's 6mm Rem, which was awesome to now have 4 generations represented in the deer woods. We shared a pile of stories and laughs at "the camp", we were fed like kings, and just had a great time. So thankful for the opportunity, and we are really enjoying all the memories we are making in PA. A wise man recently told me, "don't get all worked up if he doesn't get one, just enjoy the process, it WILL happen" I can't begin to tell you how proud I am of my kid. Dark to dark, no giving up in his attitude, no dissappintment with not getting a shot. He's got what it takes, that's for sure. I can't wait for his opportunity to come and I can't wait to share the harvest as I see it in my dreams. THANK YOU AGAIN " Mr Lee" Sent from my SM-G998U using Tapatalk

  9. With a 15 degree drop in temps and a perfect wind, I finally got out for a sit tonight in my ground blind. First time in almost 6 weeks that I got out. My target buck showed up there 2 days ago and I was hoping for a repeat tonight, but it wasn’t meant to be. I ended up having 6 does pass by within 10 yards without a clue that I was there. With about 10 minutes to go, I got a pic of my target buck across the road trailing a doe right past one of my portable stands. Looks like things are starting to heat up again. Hopefully the wind is in my favor again soon for another ground blind sit. I’m still not ready for a sit in one of my stands, but it felt great to be out there again. Thankfully my blind is a very short walk from my truck. My mind wants to go, but my body keeps saying not yet. Lol.

  10. Get off the fields and get In trails to filed 100 yards or so and you'll see deer in shooting light.. you will be more effective if you give up sight hunting as a visual hunter and use your ears to hear something coming in thick cover and when you see it it's in range already. Makes a huge difference in successful hunts

  11. Morning hunt with my grandson today. This is first chance to get out this season. He is using the moss berg rifled shotgun and I am using my old Remington smoothbore . Fingers crossed he gets a buck today. As far as me just being out with him is a good day for me

  18. 18 degrees up on the ridge east of Harrisville. I am loaded for bear. Hopefully one ain’t quite ready for its winters nap yet. The old Remington sluggers worked ok on a buck last week so they might do the trick on a bear, as long as it’s close enough. Last time up here in October, I was hunting for them over a gut pile with no success. Maybe the hot cider will draw one with a sweet tooth:

  19. Much prefer nudging them and bumping them a little to driving them hard. Great way to put some down with some company. As far as wounding them, no difference really between methods, bowhunting vs driving them. Its not the type of hunting that matters, its the nimrod pulling the string or trigger. Some are good at killing 'em, some aren't. Just the way it is.

  27. If you haven’t figured out those answers yet then you are an idiot! It’s control, it’s been about control since the first sign of this crap. I find out Monday if I’m getting suspended without pay or not over it but I’m not on a forum arguing with the idiots that support this shit everyday. It goes nowhere, you aren’t changing anyone’s mind. The brainwashed leftists will continue to be brainwashed leftists and the unvaccinated are going to stay unvaccinated unless they cave to keep their job. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  31. After careful consideration, knowing that most deer drives require a running shot VS bow shots requiring the damn stars to align, I'd have to agree with pygmy. It makes sense and any of us bow hunters that also tote a gun should see that truth. Side note. Pygmy was around and hunting before there was trucks, and even turnips. 33. Why are we still talking about this? If you want the vax you have it. You have nothing to worry about. Your chances of dying from covid are about zero. If you don’t have the shot it’s because you don’t want it. If you’re young and healthy your chances of dying from it are about zero. If you’re old, fat, smoke or have other illnesses or weakened immune system and don’t have the vax you’re taking a big chance. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  34. Hi Everyone, I'm a new hunter. This is my first year hunting. I've wanted to do it for years but never go too. I'm a USMC Veteran, and I enjoy the outdoors as much as the indoors. I play video games, brew beer, go target shooting, and now hunting. I used to go to the gym a lot but haven't much lately, hoping I can get back into it, but I'm dependent on my hunting hikes for the majority of my exercise for now lol. Anyways, I'm glad I found this forum and can become part of the community. Looking forward to getting to know some of y'all and possibly making some hunting buddies.

  35. Definitely a bad call. You'd have some tickets coming and confiscation of deer if someone finds out. Being that you came online to confess I'm going to assume it really was ignorance? Why you would shoot at a second buck without knowing if you hit the one you just shot at it beyond me. I know that the DEC would not give a damn about your bad judgement. I have no sympathy for you, that being said, do what you have to do to make it right, letting another deer rot in the woods is not going to solve anything now. Sent from my moto g fast using Tapatalk

  36. What you seem to not understand is that in wildlife management, Efficacy (success ) is inverse to opportunity. That is the sole the difference between season lengths and the implements used. It’s really not that hard a concept, in fact it’s pretty well an established by every state and province that followed the North American model of conservation. NYs season structure is antiquated and mires us into having mediocre hunting at best. However more to the point it’s detrimental to the deer herd.

  38. Drives are very safe 1 person is in charge, standers go to assigned locations and stay there until drive is done even if they shoot world record buck. They don't move so they can see better or to be more comfortable. This is done for safety, many deer are shot by the " drivers" and they need to know where everyone is to be safe, shots from standers are not into the drive but are only at the deer when past or next to the standers. Over 30 years of driving and only had to kick one person out for not listening.. there are no second chances rules are absolute. Family or not. Also only one ever kicked out of camp permanently even with the begging to come back not happening..

  39. Tomorrow morning I’m gonna drive a deer to a sitter in a treestand with a crossbow… and he’ll kill it.

  40. Trad bow<(less effective than)compound bow<crossbow<flintlock<shotgun<inline muzzleloader<rifle shooting at running deer<walking deer<standing deer Not too complicated, shooting at a running deer with a trad bow is on the stupidest end of the spectrum....... The next thing is why do drives have to be shots at running deer? I guess like most things folks like to generalize. Drives can be safe, slow and shots at standing still deer. Done right the deer will more than not stop often to check their backtrail. Or when given a sharp grunt, bark or even holler.

  43. I knew it would draw fire.....Of course deer drives are more likely to wound deer than some other types of hunting, like shooting from a steady rest from a stand, or even still hunting...But bowhunting ?? I'm not talking about the super skilled elite, just the average person that enjoys hunting with his bow....I have done all kinds of hunting, including bowhunting, and there are many things that can happen between the arrow rest and the target, some beyond the control of the shooter.... In my experience over the last 60 years or so, sharing experience with many of my peers, a lot of whom are very accomplished bowhunters, I would say the wounding/loss rate is higher for bowhunters is higher than for ANY firearms hunters, including those who drive deer.. And as far as having my head in the sand, I really thought better of you to make such a comment... This isn't my first day off the turnip truck, Sonny Boy.... No way

  44. i would say that during the season there are many factors to determine this, and others rather than dark and light, that lead deer to whatever bedding area they are at. Deer are going to bed more according to the the changes in food availability - which changes as plants die, cover - which changes as leaves drop, hunting pressure - which changes significantly from bow to gun, etc. I dont believe its a pick of dark vs light all that much as it is due to the rest of the environment. If deer are laying in fields at night it is prob mostly cause they are noctural and feeding there and then lay there. Not because it is dark out and seek out a field, its the food/does that brought them there. During light they tend not to be in the fields anyway and will most often be in thicker areas beded for the day- not considering rut activity. Also bucks get run down over the rut and might tend to bed closer to food for the rest of the season as its available at the end of season. Do deer bed more often in a field at night? yes probably because of feeding and checking does during the hunting season at night.
