  1. Think I'm done for the year. Wanted to try some public land but decided to go up to my uncles place near Middletown. Saw 4 passing behind me around 415 but they busted me as I turned and they all took off. This little one stopped at about 50-60 yds and I took a shot. Tiny, but tender. This and my bow doe should last us. Sent from my SM-G991U using Tapatalk

  2. Sunday the 5th. Alarm went off at 4am, but my body wasn't having anything to do with that! So got to the farm about 9. Asked my partner to take a ride to the east side of the property, to scope out a spot I could sit close to where I'd park my truck. After just a little searching I found a spot on a bluff, overlooking the back side of a woodlot. Good enough. Not even 100 yards from where I'd park, and all I needed was to bring a milk crate to sit on! Will be perfect for a sit sometime. After leaving that spot and getting my wheeler I was going to a short ladderstand to watch the brushy end of a pasture where we had seen a nice buck a couple times. Not far from the stand I see someone sitting in the stand. A trespasser. I posted about this part of the day in another thread. By the time that issue was worked out it was almost 3:00. I thought about just heading home early. But remembered the spot I found earlier. So grabbed a milk crate and off I go for the last hour or so. Walk the 75 yards or so, put down the milk crate, look around and 10 minutes later I see something moving! I'm watching as a big bodied buck stepped out from a tangle of brush! His rack doesn't fit his body, and he looked like one we'd had on camera a couple times? So I decide I really want him!!! Had to wait for him to slowly work his way to an opening for a clear 50 yard shot. My 270 Sako barked, he made a run of 20 yards before lying still. A solid 3 year old that dressed in the 190s!!! I can't begin to say how happy I was!!! I almost fell off the darned bluff jumping for joy! Been a tough season for me. But this was a great feeling.

  4. Not much, but by God he'll due after hunt #62!! I was in a stand 60 yards from my yard! When I shot, he bolted directly towards my house! LOL Funny that he dropped ~100 yards from my house!! Had dinner and just dragged him in! Thought I better have a celebratory shot of Tequila before I start skinning!

  7. A new one with rules is in the works. I just Want to make sure the rules for the thread are clearly stated. It will be watched closely and there will be zero exceptions to the rules. Kinda like the harvest threads are run. Just trying to make something that doesn’t get out of hand.

  9. Of course, I pushed 3 deer to my buddy. The biggest one he shot ended up being a 3 point. Still a decent deer. But damn, a long drag. 1.7 miles thru a really deep gulley. We’re both too old to be doing this.

  10. Dad and I arrived in KY on Thursday. Friday drove and hiked up in to check access and areas on our lease once more. On our lease really just a couple areas made sense to focus on. Rest was too difficult to traverse or winds would've blew all the deer out of the area. Many respectable bucks but I put two on the hit list. I was willing to shoot anything else that showed up bigger than them. Saw several bucks first day. That south face I was hunting was so thick that almost all encounters were bow range despite I had a 30-06 rifle. First light opening morning (Saturday) I had a monster longbeard pitch down just above me 20 yards away and then hammered away for about 20 mins. Had multiple encounters with spike bucks working by me setup in a climber stand. One within 10 yards. Neither my dad or I saw any doe during daylight the whole trip and none of those bucks were nose to the ground searching for doe. They were all vacuuming up acorns though. Late morning I had a 2.5 or 3.5 yr old 9 pt (possible 10pt I'd you count the sticker) come in at 15 yards. Recognized the buck and wasn't on my hit list so I passed. He looked real big that close and after he disappeared into thick cover to the north I had second thoughts if I did the right thing. He was possibly the #3 biggest known to be on the lease. Told myself I wouldn't call first day but it felt right. I put out some tinks scent Bombs off to my flanks in case any buck tried to circle and cut my wind so they'd hit them first. While later I sent out a few series of grunts toward the deep ravine I believed deer were holed up in that the tinks was also blowing down into. Not long after I heard steps and saw movement again. Thought it was a spike I previously saw headed into thick cover and then steps fell off like it bedded out of sight. Well the buck came partially into view on and off. First saw tarsals to confirm it was older. Then I saw glimpses of a large rack. He worked to the edge of an opening in the thick stuff and turned toward me. That's when I identified the buck. As one of two on my hit list. He was scanning the woods looking for a hot doe and buck he smelt and heard. Seemed to be nervous like he was going to pull a 180 and disappear back into cover. Took a frontal shot and then followed him in scope the best I could through thick cover. After several seconds it occurred to me he was rolling down the ravine not running. I could see his white belly rolling and heard him let out a quick distressed grunt each time his belly turned up. He must have hit a flat spot or got hung up on something as he stopped and started to rise on his front feet so I sent another shot behind his should through a small opening. Sent him into a flop again but fell out of sight. Drag sucked getting him back up to and over the point I shot him at. It was pretty much down hill from there just making sure he didn't slip or roll over top of me. Lol great respectable tall 9pt. dad's was uneventful with a bang flop and came in on a usual pattern. A nice 10 pointer though. Sent from my SM-G781V using Tapatalk

  11. You folks pretty much guessed it right. I had a biologist look at the tooth wear and said,"He could be a few years older than 6½, but there’s no way to dial in on a year beyond 6½ looking at tooth wear." SO: 1.I will get it the tooth aged which will take a while cause I am busy 2. His diet was too farmland too worry about taste. He didn't have to run far for food or shelter as he had 3 swamps refuges within 100 yards of his food source.. I shot him going from 1 swamp to another crossing the soybean field between the two refuges. Having eaten parts already, it is not gamey or tough (I know how to prepare medallions of venison (without the pressure cooker) so it cuts without the need of a knife) 3. Second best shot of my life. Though I practiced at that range, Shooting a buck at a legitimate 389 yards ( As the Leopold laser finder said) is not the same as a paper target. Used a 6.5 x284 hand-loaded 140 grain Sierra SBT, IMR 4831 on a Krieger barrel fitted to a Browning left handed A-bolt action. Yeah Practice!!! 4. I shot one of his grandsons in the same field 2 years ago with the same serrated palmation rack configuration..but he was only 2 1/2 Have a Great Christmas and a Happy New Year and always a SAFE HUNT

  15. Simple fix, if you don't like a certain season then don't hunt that season. If you don't like the late ML season then stay home. Why so many people feel the need to make our season like other states baffles me. If you like those other states so much then pack up and move there, or just hunt those states. Then you don't have to worry about hunting here at all. Or, if you don't enjoy hunting with a certain type of implement then just don't use it. The late seasons are also for archery, so go get a re-curve or long bow if you feel you need a challenge. All this "I don't like this or that so lets take this and that away from people who enjoy it!" sucks! If you want to use an old flint lock what's stopping you? YOU are the only thing stopping you.

  16. Personally, I’d like it to go back to HUNTING and FISHING related discussions in this section. Most of the crap in this section turns into a headache. I hate Patrolling it, I dont Want to read the crap that gets posted, but I kind of have to. It’s annoying and makes it so I dont even care to participate, as I read crap in here, it gets my blood boiling and I log off. Its not my site though, so it’s not my call.

  19. No one is forcing anyone to use anything they don't want to use. If you think modern inline's are too easy, use something else that's harder. Don't like the idea of a scope, Don't use one. Don't like the idea of the muzzloader season at all, don't hunt it. I'm honestly getting really tired of hearing how this or that is to easy or doesn't make sense and it should be changed to make it better. Hunt what you want to hunt when it's legal to do so and leave everyone else that likes it how it is alone. I'll step off my soapbox now.

  21. Decided to take my last half day of vacation today with the snow sticking and more coming. Got to my stand and the neighbors where making all kinds of noise behind me so I decided to move and go to a ground blind I had set up and not sat in yet on the edge of some thick pines and the hardwoods. With about 15 minutes of legal light I hear a stick snap and look and see a deer working through the pines. I put the binoculars up and as soon as I could see it was a buck I reached for the gun and he vanishes. I'm searching hard to find him and figure he's gone when up to my right I hear something and there he is 75 yards away and looking away from me. I got the crosshairs on him took a breath and squeezed the trigger. The deer bolts and now I'm thinking how did I miss there's no f'ing way I missed. I get out of the blind to go look and there's blood then more blood then alot of blood and there he was 30 yes away. The shot took the bottom of his heart and and one lung. I'm glad I stuck it out like everyone has said it can all change in an instant.

  22. I can say that last weekend I had a mother and her 7 year old daughter sitting with me, and her aunt about 100 yards away overlooking another draw. About 8:00, the aunt fired once and scared the crap out of me. Of course, she facetimes, or whatever the hell it is called, her sister and says she has a doe down in sight. I told her to sit tight and I would be up in a few minutes. I head up to her and help her get it gutted. While she is filling out her tag, Boom!!!!, another shot back down below. The mother calls up and says she has a buck down right by the swamp. So, back down I go to help her out with gutting. Her 7 year old daughter is so excited because she saw the whole thing. Then she got to help spread the legs so her mommy could gut the deer. So then, me and the daughter head back to her aunt to drag her doe back down to her mother and her buck. When we get to the doe, she says whoa, that is way bigger than mommy's buck. I was honestly surprised she noticed, but she was right for sure. I put on my harness and dragged the doe back around the finger of land, back to the other deer and take a break. We sat there and had coffee and cocoa and shared the excitement of success for both women. It was a perfect morning other than the long drag back to the cars. Both of these women hunted the youth season years ago with me, and have continued hunting. This year they gave me a call to take them where the action was because their spots had gone cold. I gladly planned a Saturday morning hunt, and asked for the daughter to come along. It worked out even better than I hoped. This was on heavily hunted state land, in a spot that gets avoided because of too much water to access it. During my coonhunting days, I found a small strip of land to get in there. It has been a great spot after the first week for over 20 years.

  25. I think it brings a lot to the forum. It sure makes it obvious who Yuri Bezmenov is referring to when he describes who are the useful idiots that are being used by the socialists/communists in this country. Let’s face it. The left is doing everything that they can to destroy this country. There is a reason why his approval rating is at an all time low. There is not one good thing that he has done since taking office and he sure as hell has not been able to unite this country or follow the science like he has preached. If you don’t like the political forum, don’t read it or post in it. Move along. Simple as that.

  26. I will gladly scroll past the politics section, but folks don't keep the politics in that section. It would be much simpler if it was not on the site at all. It benefits nobody (except those that enjoy the back and forth and the many here that love the sound of their own ideas echoing back at them). If I thought the back and forth was changing anyone's mind it might be different. Mostly what I see is a baffling inability to see that there are multiple sides to complicated issues. I'm willing to admit I don't know it all and that I could be wrong. The experts on here are sometimes beyond belief. SMH.

  30. Same here Brian. Have several night time pics, that's keeping me motivated. No real shooters since 11/19 though. But, I've since lowered my standards.... significantly! LOL Yesterday afternoon, I had to laugh and shake my head at the amount of tracks in my back yard and back in the woods on the way to my stand. But yet, the woods are void of life during the day! I put a cam in my yard and this small buck is out there just about every night! In the pic, he's about 40 yards from my house! LOL The doe tripped my security cam the other night!

  39. I’m happy to say I don’t know who those folks are ! Along with I’m not much of a customer for the “hunting industry “ as I don’t buy much hunting stuff . My hunting clothes are washed in the same cheap crap Mrs nomad washes all our clothes in, if I shower prior to a hunt it’s with Irish Spring , I eat and drink coffee in the truck and if I need gas I stop and get it . I don’t spray stuff on my clothes or drag things behind me , no scent loc stuff, certainly no ozone machines lol . My stands are more often then not picked for their comfort or the fact that the drag would be shorter . No food plots, cell cameras, magic beans or voodoo dolls , although I wouldn’t rule out trying a a voodoo doll . I’ve bought three bows in 33 years and I only bought the last one because I could no longer draw number two back . My deer pics get posted here and on IG where I influence no one . Happily ignorant in my hunting ways .

  44. Can count on one hand how many deer I've shot after 2pm. Well opening day bucked that trend. Had a group of three does come through some thick stuff around 3pm. The biggest doe of the group stopped at about 60 yards and gave me a front on shot, so I gambled a neck shot with the muzzleloader and it somehow found it's way to the target...through the target...and an unfortunate tree caught the remaining wrath of the Barnes TMZ sabot. Otherwise my season/deer action have been incredibly slow in 8X.

  46. Here's the deer plan that the ignorant "Idiots" at the NYSDEC have come up with. Maybe the two experts here could attend a meeting and show these ignorant "Idiots" how it's done ? DEC management plan I'm sure that the same deer plan they use in the mountains of Ohio, will work in the Adirondacks ? You know, the Largest park in the US, 6 million acres, with several mountain peaks over 5K high, just like the mountains in Ohio and Missouri. I've been hunting all over the US and abroad for longer than some here are alive. I've never ever heard anyone at SCI say that they were booking a trip to NYS to deer hunt, or any other type of hunting either. Small mouth bass and great lakes fishing, Yes, Hunting , No.
