I haven't posted on here in a while, but I have been pretty busy in the taxidermy shop. Currently, just over halfway done with the '21 season mounts. These two Steuben County bruisers went home this afternoon.3 points

As my son is busy with working 2 jobs and watching his 2 young daughters, I have become the de facto trainer for Gunner. Took him out and did some work with him in the field with a puppy size training dummy. Then I introduced him to the water for the first time. He was hesitant at first to go in the water but after some time and coaxing I got him to go in up to his belly. I am patient and will continue to work with him a few days a week. He is a true sweetheart and I really enjoy working with him. valoroutdoors.com3 points

There’s a road killed doe about a mile up the road. We have a local eagle population that spend their time along the Cohocton River down the hill and I know of an active nest overlooking the river. I got these pics of them hanging around feeding on the carcass yesterday afternoon. Based on the feather color pattern and the sizes being the same, I believe the darker headed ones are golden eagles and not juvenile bald eagles. The pic of the golden in flight was the largest bird in the group. If that’s all correct, there were three bald eagles and four golden eagles in the area. I see baldies occasionally, but always single ones prior. And I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a golden for sure before this. I was able to creep up in the truck to within 100-ish yards and got these shots standing on the running boards. I did try to sneak up closer on foot, but that’s when they took flight.2 points

I'm surprised the 6s or 7 1/2s did not outperform the 4s at 25 yards... 25 yards is a chip shot in turkey hunting....Most of the shotguns in my safe would kill a gobbler at 25 yards with skeet or trap loads...2 points

At least the state is trying to do something to stop the spearing of the fish: https://www.syracuse.com/outdoors/2022/04/state-barricades-roads-to-oneida-fish-hatchery-after-spearfishing-dust-up.html2 points

I have found some great areas on long tracks. One bedding area was all torn up among boulders on the top of a hill - they just lay on that ledge and watch hikers all day. Still haven’t figured out how to hunt that spot Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk2 points

Not venison but pork sausage. Realized I like the taste of pork sausage more than venison sausage but love the burgers from venison. So all my grind goes to burgers. Made 10lbs each of a Tuscan vodka sausage with roasted red peppers and a smoked/apple with high temp cheddar. Mixed up to flavor overnight. Will try a test patty of each tomorrow and then add the high temp cheddar cheese to the smoked/apple and case it all. Sent from my motorola edge 5G UW (2021) using Tapatalk2 points

Well here is an update on how Gunner is progressing. He is now 8.5 weeks old and weighs 17.5 lbs. We went snow goose hunting yesterday and my son made a retrieving dummy out of the snow goose wings from a snow goose he shot. Gunner immediately was fetching the wings when they were tossed. Gunner shows great promise and we are looking forward to the Fall hunting season. There is nothing more enjoying than hunting with a good dog. valoroutdoors.com2 points

Just did a test pattie of each of the ones I mixed up yesterday. Both were awesome. Very happy how they came out. Gonna case them soon. I won't make anymore now til next winter probably. More of a cold weather hobby. If we were closer I have enough Tuscan spices left for another 10-15 lbs and smoked sausage spices for the same. Guess I will just have to make more! Those big screens always seem like they are to bright. I’m pretty sure mine is the 8” and it seems like it’s just big enough. I’ve got it set up to go into night/dark mode and it’s not to bad on long trips Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk1 point

Last week’s Meateater podcast episode again goes over this and is pretty interesting. Last summer, I needed more arrows and the ICS 340 Whiteouts I had were discontinued. After researching a bit, I got bit by the Ranch Fairy bug and went with a Sirius Vulcan 250 at 31” long with a stainless insert and 200 grain Grizzly Stik single bevels. Seeing the crazy penetration on my block target was intriguing to me. Do I need a 652 grain arrow? Definitely not. Was it fun creating a new setup that I have confidence in? Absolutely. I know bullet and arrow analogies are less than perfect, but, I think of it kind of like this: a .243, .30-06, and .45-70 all have their place in the deer woods. I don’t shoot past 35 or so yards, so the .45-70 of arrows is cool with me. Plus, it is darn quiet. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk1 point

It's got it's moments of frustration I PROMISE you. I've gotten 23 heads mounted up and put the door since deer season ended...still have 20 more to go.1 point

well they dont believe in our laws well then , when some body gives him a punch to the nose for doing what hes doing then he better not look for our laws to protect him, but im sure he will want it both ways....1 point

I shot a bird in maine last year in a beaver meadow just like that. If there isn’t any other open areas around until the grass gets too high they’ll use that just as any other field. They don’t know the difference between a beaver meadow, a cow pasture and a hay field. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk1 point

If I did, there wouldn't be so many baby sheds in the pile this year! Biggest one was 61" from a stud 3.5 year old, he's one of the only good bucks that I have to look forward to this year. The local buck herd got demolished last gun season so I went into the shedding season knowing that there wasn't going to be many big antlers laying around.1 point
