  1. This morning I took one of my 4-H kids out hunting for the first time. We got on several squirrels, and he had a few shots. What a smile when he knocked out his first one, on both of our parts. Our hunt was short since he had to be at work by 9, but he left one happy kiddo. I think one of the most rewarding parts of this is that this kid would have never have even thought about becoming a hunter if I hadn’t offered. We spent a few days preparing, and he did a fantastic job. He can’t wait to go again. I’ll fry it up for him tomorrow and leave it for him.

  4. Didn’t plant a vegetable garden this year, but I’m starting to get a lot of figs and peaches. Should be getting grapes any minute. For those of you who didn’t grow up with figs, always look for these “stretch marks” on the side of the figs. That’s how you know it was ripened in the actual tree. Figs picked too early won’t taste good at all. They won’t get anymore sugar. The marks let you know that it had the maximum amount of sugar. You can see the marks in two of the close ups pics Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  6. I think I hit the annual frog migration this morning on a small NW Adirondack lake. The smallmouth bass were in very shallow. I landed close to 50 in a couple hours (between rain breaks) and 90 % of them hit the Heddon Zara Puppy top-water bait just after splashdown. Most were just inches from shore.

  7. Rain, glorious RAIN !! More than an inch fell here in Dogpatch over the last 24 hours, and it came gentle and steady, so it should soak in rather than running right off....And there's more coming over the next 24 hours... All summer long the rain has been going north and south of us...Seemed like the lower Canisteo Valley might have to be renamed Death Valley....Hehehe...

  12. Just curious how many like fall off the bone vs the more traditional tender but still some adhesion? 321 works great for fall off the bone but I actually braise it less and smoke it outside of the foil a bit longer sine I prefer some adhesion to the bone. How do y’all cook em?

  13. And the sad part is GH , I dont think you are near the bottom yet .The Dow could fall below 28,000 and the S+P could get below 3200 easily in late fall or early winter if or when Europe crashes from their double stupidity on energy . The 1st was the screwballs like Merkel shutting down the 12 nuclear plants to the idiotic new dimwits trying to run the country on solar panels and windmills that dont produce 30 percent of what they claimed . And who was stupid enough to make their country enslaved to their enemy ( Russia ) by depending on them for their natural gas lines to power your country after screwing themselves shutting down their nuclear plants. And the BOZO in charge of Germany right now said in Davos that he wants to be the Head of finances in " New World Government " when it is formed ? This is all run by the poisonous globalists to take down the USA with their puppet Biden taking orders from them . Unfortunately its working with Biden sinking us from every angle .

  16. Some sausage "balls" (not quite holding sharp-too hot I presume) and some jalapeño poppers. Plus an extra Italian sausage in chef provided synthetic casing just cause I had an extra and was curious how that would be Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  17. As they say "Low & Slow", I do ribs and briskets all winter long in my wood cookstove when she is fired up for heating. I like using various dry rubs and put in on both sides liberally, I place the meat in a rectangular high side baking pan and seal it good with aluminum foil and put it in the oven early in the morning say 6 AM. The oven does not get real hot because of the hot water tank on the side. I will remove from the oven at supper time around 6PM, the meat is tender and falls of the bones and so good. Al

  18. Forever wild is state parks of NY not DEP. DEP is technically private so they can do as they please. They are most definitely logging their forests, but its mostly because they see an improvement of water quality. The improved habitat is a happy byproduct for them. At least this is what was explained to me by the foresters I've spoken to

  20. Now that I'm up at my house full time I won't be pressured by the low amount of days to hunt. I've been pretty lucky on this property harvesting 2.5 year old nice bucks. Just like the two I got last year. I want to make it a point that I harvest a mature doe and wait iit out for that bigger buck 3.5 or better. That is my goal.

  21. Have both my nephews and son get a deer. Me- shoot at least 5, ideally 7-9 between both states I hunt and not buy beef again/ help some families with meat that I usually do. I'm changing schedules and will be able to hunt any evening I want.

  22. Permits are free and easy to acquire, but not all DEP land requires them. In fact, other than the land around the reservoirs, I almost never see "permit required" land. Here are the various signs you will come across. Areas posted with “Recreation By Permit”signs require a DEP Access Permit. Areas posted with “Public Access Area” signs do not require a DEP Access Permit for recreational use. Properties that are marked with “No Trespassing” or “Posted” signs are not open for public use. “Deer Management” signs are posted in hunting areas where Quality Deer Management principles are enforced. “Caution Active Forest Management” signs appear in areas where forest management projects are underway. “Temporary Closure” signs are posted in areas where a recreation area is temporarily closed.

  23. 1990 Old Town. Gotta love it. I have one also. Same model, same year. I’ve replaced the seats and we still use it regularly. Great for fishing. Still love the kayaks for recreational paddling but the canoe is the platform for fishing. Good luck with taking the kids out in it. My wife and I had my three year old son out on Minerva Lake in the Adirondacks and he was having fun splashing the water paddling with a spatula. Dropped the spatula and before I could react, he bailed over the side after it. Best grab I ever made, snagged him by the life jacket and hauled him back in. He was smiling and laughing while my wife was near hysterical. All in all, a canoe is definitely the way to go with a family.

  30. That’s a little better. Believe him to be 5.5 as I have matched set from 2020-21 season with the same split brows and estimated him at 3 then. Several night images of him over the years but first daytime image of him that I can recall close to season. He’s been a ghost to date in season.

  31. My favorite spot was not to far from there, at a friend’s camp in Centerville. It’s been about 25 years, since I hunted for grouse in the old overgrown apple orchard down there. That’s where I had the 2/2 hunt with my dad’s sweet 16, and where I killed the most grouse overall. That 2/2 hunt, back in 1989, got dad and I thrown out of that camp for opening day of deer season. That was back when the season opened on Monday. A couple of my buddies (the camp owner’s sons) and myself had went back Sunday afternoon to check on our stands. I carried my dad’s sweet 16 , just in case a grouse showed up and the two did, because my Ithaca had a scope on it. Nobody saw any deer the following morning, for the first time on opening day, since they had the camp. One of the old “regulars” said it was because of “those kids shooting those grouse back there” the day before, driving away all the deer. Ironically, that was the same year that I killed my PB whitetail buck (as far as antlers go) on Thanksgiving morning, on our farm in Clarence Ctr. The camp owner and the crotchety, complaining old regular were about a mile down the road, standing in front of his barn, that day. I made a point of stopping in with that big 3.5 year old 9-point in the bed of my truck. I have deer hunted from home, or at my folks place in Akron, every gun season opening day since then. I have not killed one, or even shot at a grouse yet, here at the in-laws place, right on the NW corner of Adirondack park. Before they built here, they rented a place, about 20 miles off the corner, farther to the NW. I killed my last 5 or 6 there, including the two with rifles. I have seen two, and killed one in Clarence Center, about 35 years ago. I was rabbit hunting with my side by side 16 gauge, and one exploded out of some thick cover, almost at my feet. I shot quickly, from the hip, and it caught the full pattern, wad and all, from less than 10 yards. When I walked over to get it, dejavou, “it” exploded out again, which turned out to be a second bird. I never got a shot off at that one. About half the breast was blown off of the first one, but what was left was lead tenderized and still very tasty. I have not seen another one around home after that. That’s my fault for taking out half of the only mating pair in town, before they established a featherhold.

  36. Tuna regulations can change over the course of the season. Blue Fin Tuna regulations are 27" to less than 73". Those 73" and over are giants and closed to recreational permits. Typical bag limit is 2 at 27" to less than 47" and 1 at 47" to less than 73"/per boat. Your fish looks like a Yellowfin which is 27" and over at 3/person/boat.

  43. I have a Pedersoli made Lyman Great Plains Rifle in flint. I love it. If you havent shot flint before, there is a steep but fun learning curve! I suggesgt going to the Muzzleloading Forum for tons of advice on them. Especially early on shooting make sure you are shooting from a bench/rest, and be relaxed through the follow through. Mine has a very fast lock, but the follow through is crucial for accurate shooting. Have fun! My favorite source for muzzleloading supplies is Track of the Wolf. Good prices, very fast shipping. STock up on fliints when you find them...they are much more readily available than percussion caps lately, but also get sold out. Check Pedersolis web site or the ML forum to find out what size flint for yours.
