  4. Got my first ever Canadian Geese this afternoon. Used a shotgun, size 6 load(I know). It was the only steel shot I could find..... First took one shot to the head at 10yrds, second took 2 shots at 30 yrds. I was able to spot them walking in, the stalked them for the shot.

  5. I've been waiting for last night for 8 years. Last night I took my son out for a PM sit in 8A. This was his first time tagging along on a hunt with me. Temps in the low 70's and a light SSE wind. We were settled in by about 4p. I hiked him in to the 2 story box blind i built last year. The canopy is still way too thick for the upper deck to be useful, so we sat in the bottom area. Around 4:30 we saw a nice buck walk (headed North) from the woods, across a small unplanted section, into the corn. About 20 minutes later we saw a smaller buck behind us in the woods walking South. Hard horns on both. By 6:30 he was starting to get antsy and was ready to go. Being a school night, I decided it was probably time to still hunt back to the truck. The walk is about a mile and would take about 45 minutes. So we pack up and follow the tree line along the bottom of the field and then turn North. I'm not sure what we'll see because of we're walking out with the wind more or less at our backs. Well we didn't make it very far when we spot a group deer about 200 yards North of us feeding along the corridor between the corn and the trees. I took the binos out and counted 7 deer. It was 4 bucks, 2 doe and a fawn. The bucks were all 8 pts or better and one of them was by far the biggest deer I've ever seen alive! It had a big old pot belly, the fur was a bit more gray than the others, and the antlers were dark. My son was super excited. We slowly stalked up to see how close we could get. Ultimately we got to within about 40 yards of the does and the bucks were only 75 yards away. Man I wished it was regular season! My son really wanted me to shoot the doe. I passed though. This was at about 7:30 or so. If I shot, had to trail it, then clean it and drag it out.. I wouldn't have made it to the truck until closer to 9.. then would get home closer to 10.. too late for a school night, so we let them walk. Eventually they all fed out of the area, they didn't spook or blow or anything. It was a perfect first hunt for him. He learned lots of valuable lessons about noise, movement, playing the wind, patience, and that a hunt doesn't need to end with a dead deer to be a success. He can't wait to go back out with me. All in all it couldn't have gone much better.

  6. Felt like a fun hunt. It was 60 degrees which is cooler than alot of early bow hunts, plus I wouldn't hunt early if I didn't have the setup to properly process the meat. I went with a buddy to a spot I've never been to before. We actually ended up just sitting together watching deer and a few fox for an hour and a half before we had a big doe come in by herself. I doubt Ill make it out again this year, but I'll do it again next year if there's a season. Plus an extra doe in the freezer is a great way to start the season.

  15. I've been wondering why This plot hasn't looked so well, Even with the liquid fertilizer application and plenty of rain.. I finally put a cam up and there is does in it all day and night. This end of the plot looks the worse, and its where the deer typically enter the plot so it makes sense. Some spots north/right of this photo frame are a 1ft tall but most are less than 4" in height. Yesterday my boy and I spread winter wheat, Winter Rye and peas into this plot to thicken it up.. There was a chance of a few showers so we went with it, didn't get my other plot done as we ran out of free time.. Low and behold we got 3" rain on this plot between 8pm and midnight last night! Will hit it with another dose of liquid this week and granular Urea next solid chance of rain. This plot will get frost seeded with a huge perennial blend Seems my 2 kill plots have gotten hammered by the deer before they even had a chance..

  19. President Biden said that Putin is the blame for inflation. Actually he was telling some truth. Putin’s war crimes against Ukraine cannot be understated and should not be forgotten. Putin is an evil war criminal that should face execution for his crimes. Before I continue, let’s look at young Joe Biden. He was a draft dodger during a time period when America was fighting communism against North Korea, Vietnam and the Soviet Union. Not sure if Biden was a coward and/or supported communism, but he did not fight communism. Biden has said that his son Hunter Biden is one of the smartest people he knows. The statement speaks volumes for Biden’s state of mind. The war in Ukraine is being fought by men and women, yes women who have more courage than Biden could imagine. It was Biden who failed to get the best armaments to the Ukraine military before Russia invaded. It was Biden who refused to allow Poland to transfer fighter jets to Ukraine. So if Biden had done his job, Russia’s third rate military would really have had greater destruction. Russia has always been an enemy of the United States of America. They have worked against us and have supported our enemies. So there is no shame in assisting in destroying Russia s military. Why did not Biden take the right actions? So really inflation is mostly Biden’s fault due to his incompetent decision making in both domestic and foreign affairs. Then again, Biden thinks Hunter Biden is one of the smartest people he knows!

  21. You mean the modern world has never gone through a man made Pandemic before. All of the other nature produced pandemics didn't have the death rate of Covid19, because they weren't weaponized. The issue is that it didn't take long to figure out what worked and what didn't. Knowing that, the "Experts" still mandated their asinine ideas because of the power to control the populace. The layman Governors that didn't follow the experts educated guesses, but followed what was found to actually work had half the death rate of the Liberal run states and they also didn't shut down their states economy's either. Yet those Governors were chastised and called stupid from the bully pulpit of educated scholars hiding in their masks surrounded by toilet paper. We trusted some of the experts and they failed because they got politicized and used by the libs to do their bidding. If they were really experts they would've followed the lead of the states that were winning the fight against covid early on and adopted those methods to help their patients.

  24. Short of our tanks on the UTV, we have a few backpack and smaller sprayers. We keep them separate for Cleth, 24db, and gly. Mostly because of murphy's law for us. I sprayed cleth on a small plot out of a 2 gallon hand pump a few weekends ago. I generally hand spray cleth and 24db. Most of our larger plots tend to be annuals that do a good job at crowding out weeds and we'll also let the weeds go if it's not obnoxious due to some weeds being a food source as well. We have abandoned the desire for a magazine quality plot. We definitely had more “failed” plots this season than in years past. I think we had three that just bombed out with poor/minimal growth in sections. You can see in the images where - one we’ve reworked and seeded winter rye. The other we top dressed with DER and PTT, since in Ohio there is a slightly longer growing season still. All that said, the plots are serviceable. Wanted to get oats in but my partner didn’t bring them and we got to the plot and made do with the Rye. We had really good luck with oats last year. First time in a monoculture and wow, I’m sure we will make it a point for next year. Rye should be helpful though. We are calling it done for plotting this year. Time to get ready for opener.

  28. Soaking the breasts in brine is the first step and you're off to a good start. Be sure to change the water frequently. You want to get all of the blood out. Then take the breasts and place them in a crockpot. Add 1 bottle of your favorite barbecue sauce and some water. Cook the breasts on low for 8 hours. Remove the breasts and make pulled goose sandwiches. You will be amazed at how tender and delicious it comes out. valoroutdoors.com

  29. If this plot is that remote and unsafe to get equipment too, then your best bet it to just cut them as low as possible and carry on. If you'll never have a machine in here you have no worry to puncture a tire, or trip/tip.. then cut them as flush and as low as possible to the ground... Then drill holes deep as theyll go, into the stumps with a big drill bit. Sounds to me this plot is going to be all hand and backpack tool labor..

  31. If it hasnt had a September mow yet.. certainly mow. IMO all perennial plots need to be mowed in September this gives a few solid weeks of re growth and keeps the plants at a younger growth stage, rather than taller more mature and slightly less palatable/preferred.. Young green growing vegetation is most time always better than tall older growth. Just mow high and clip the top of everything, this will control some weeds as well

  45. Funny you say that. This thing dragged the kid 200 yards down the beach (toward the swimmers and surfers!) and a good crowd was there watching them land it. One of the kids had to run all the way back to get the pliers left at their starting spot and a lady came over to berate the kid for making such a majestic animal struggle for his pleasure. The kid was cool and said well I was gonna take it's fin for soup but you convinced me to release it. She was quite pleased with herself for doing her part to save that creature!
