  1. I got my first buck with me bow, have been bow hunting for about 8 years and have only been able to get shots at doe's. He was about 15 yards when I took the shot, I hit a little higher than I would have liked but he still went down. He ran about 50-60 yards before going down. Thankfully I heard him go down as there was not blood trail, a nice big exit hole but no blood until the spot he went down. I have to go out and look for the arrow a little more I wasn't able to find it at the time. The picture isn't the greatest, it was getting dark and I wanted to get him dressed and hung as soon as possible. He's a 9 point, it didn't look like anything was broken off, just didn't grow the same on both sides. Sent from my SM-G996U using Tapatalk

  5. Huge thank you to gman. Me and my son Hunter hunted Greg's place on Saturday we sat dark to dark we didn't see anything but enjoyed relaxing in the woods together. Hunter wanted to hunt Sunday but after sitting all day my body wasn't up for another sit the next morning. I promised him that I would take him back to Greg's to hunt this morning. Greg suggested a stand that we go to and it's definitely a camp favorite. Me and Hunter seen our first deer 20 minutes after first light it was a big bodied deer but never stopped moving and Hunter couldn't get the scope on it. 20 minutes later he said here comes some deer running down the trail. One stopped about 50 yards away he aimed and squeezed off a shot. The deer took off with I'm hurt bad look. We went back to Greg's house and all chatted for an hr to make sure it has time to expire. then me Greg and Hunter went and tracked his doe. It went less than 75 yards.

  6. Still hanging around. Haven’t picked him up on my other cam. I believe that cam had a few dropping acorns and photos are dwindling there making me think the food source is drying up or the bedding spot is getting wetter. He is still showing up at this field edge scrape 4-5x per week in the dark. Only seen him once last year around this time. He bailed last year from mid-late October to nearly Christmas time. Curious what happens this time and if we can find him before then. And thanks, spider web, for the glare.

  10. 10/8 Pm I dropped this 39lb female @ 279 yards, my furthest kill so far in a long time. Called a pair in, but they wouldn't come any closer. Scope battery cap was on loose, so the scope shut down upon recoil and compromised the video and also didn't let me take a shot at the other coyote. My buddy said it dropped like a rock. The Halo X50 and Customized Savage Impulse Predator .243 are getting the job done. Gotta have confidence in your gear, but also make sure your battery cap is tight !

  11. Careful. The members who hate political threads will be crying about this thread being in the General Chit Chat section soon. How anyone can think firearms discussions and politics can be separated, is a mystery to me.

  13. Unfortunately…..another live one today…… 10/11/22 This morning Kunox and I tracked an 8 pointer that the hunter knew for a fact he had hit it in the shoulder. The buck was perfectly broadside at the shot. The hunter and buddies had tracked it last night for a couple hundred yards. Kunox extended the track another 400 yards, then we lost it. Toward the end of the 400 yards, we found two blood drops that were fresh, so we knew the buck was still alive. I had the guys stay put while Kunox searched the entire area. 4.3 miles worth. Apparently nothing vital was hit as we never found a bed or the deer. Kunox enjoyed some jerky on the way home, as evidenced by his grin.

  18. Well its time, we will be heading out tonight. Pack is all set, coming in at 66lbs. 9 days worth of food, each days worth of food weighs just under 2lbs, each bag contains roughly 3000 calories. Went to a buddies place last week and shot out to 400 yards, all my data is set to 500 yards and looking good. My friend that is going...Definitely going to try and limit his shots to 300 yards and under. My bullet of choice for this trip is factory loaded Federal terminal ascent 175gr. Buddy is using Federal 165gr trophy bonded tipped ammo. We have 5 coolers in the bed of the truck totaling 615 quarts. This should do for 2 elk and a muley boned out. If more space is needed we will go cooler shopping. Current temps from the closest town i can get looks like highs of 60⁰ and lows in the low 30⁰s. Now this is Cobalt Idaho, which sits around 5k ft of elevation, we will be 2500-3500ft higher so im anticipating cooler temps. Ill have a big write up when we get back, ill have some pics posted on our way out but for now...wish us luck!

  19. That football roast is the perfect thing for corned venison. I’ve low smoked that roast before and it came out very tender, moist and delicious. Very little knife work while eating.

  22. She’s 80% the reason why I built the enclosed stand. This way we have heat and don’t have to worry about how cold or wet it is. She doesn’t need much for special winter gear. A 4-5 hour sit on a cold day is easy now for her. The other 20% before you even ask is because I was also tired of doing dark to dark sits in temperatures in the teens. Or 40 degrees and raining which is worse in my opinion. I still like to sit out in the elements because the enclosed blind isn’t the same feeling but when it gets bad I can retreat to the enclosed and be comfortable. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  24. Now this a subject that would take a book to cover and to cover thoroughly it would be of many pages. Squirrels rank right at the top for me as one of my favorite animals to hunt. Being serious I am not talking about bird feeder squirrels, all the things that go into the making of a good hunter are needed for squirrels such as finding habitat, food sources, stealth, concealment and precision marksmanship. In a nutshell, early season when the leaves are on and shooting distances fairly short I like using a good quality 22 rifle, a medium powered scope with an adjustable objective for parallax mitigation firing standard velocity or even match ammo which almost always gives me my best groups and has more than enough pop to kill Squirrels. I sight in dead on at fifty yards and my serious hunting rifles will print groups that are ragged holes. Later in the season when the leaves are off and the shots a bit longer I use a couple of specialized rifles that group very well with hyper velocity ammunition like Stingers, Yellowjackets and Velocitors, this ammo shoots fairly flat and makes for pretty easy shots out to seventy five yards and a little beyond. These rifles are sighted dead on at seventy five yards. When it comes to Squirrel guns I spare no expense, for my way of thinking my favorite type hunting should be done with the best equipment I can afford. Al

  25. Buddy was pretty set on me giving a crossbow a try this year. So he loaned me a Barnett Wildcat to use once the season opens here in the SZ. I got it dialed in with FP’s and have shot a few BH's to make sure things are on point. Grouping 3 arrows inside 3" at 30 yards, and single BH shots inside the 3" at the same distance. So that's all good. I'm not certain how this will pan out, I can't say I don't enjoy shooting it, but it's not my compound. The Summer of 2021 I had considered buying one, or upgrading my compound, but ended up going the inline ML route when all was said and done. Then, there's if I take a deer with a borrowed crossbow, I'm going to want to buy the silly gun with a string.

  27. Up and in for a quick Pm hunt. 72 degrees with a slight breeze. Killed my first mosquito of bow season! I already saw a big doe wandering out of range and a fawn under my stand. I’ll take that as a good sign.

  31. You ever wonder if the rest of the woods hates that first bird though? Like, oh there's steve up and ready already and it's still dark and it's nice and warm in here but that bastard has to be up and chipper making the rest of us look bad.

  32. It's ridiculous that we don't have an easy process for disabled and senior citizens to hunt with a crossbow. I'm sure some slimy folks would use this to get their fake doctors note, but those guys are already slimy and probably already hunting their private property with one. I have my opinions on the crossbow, but they stop when it prohibits a non-able bodied hunter from enjoying the deer woods.

  35. It is a 455 model, the 455s were a transition model made for a short time while CZ changed from 452s and 455s to production of their current 457s that are completely different rifles. Currently I think the CZs are "thee" best buy when it comes to new bolt action rimfire rifles, they pretty much have it all ,price, decent looks, quality materials and they are shooters. Al

  37. Oh man, last night was a tough one. Wife wasn’t going to be home and had a bit of a drive with the kid for an event. Hunting partner had scout meeting. Left me with no real things to do but hunt. Work kept me late so I shot out to an easy to get to stand for the last 90 minutes. Close to a house owned my by hunting partner’s family. It’s getting gutted and renovated. Anyhow, I’m relaxing and watching deer out about 250 yards with the Binos. One good buck and 6-7 doe. I stand up and look back toward a road. See not one but two clear shooters come across the road and on my side heading my way through the brush. Maybe 20 yards into the brush from road. Pumped because I know how that path plays out. They’re 90ishyards away. Out of nowhere this truck and trailer drives by, slows down, and backs into a nearby driveway on a neighbor. Deer spook and go back across the road! Couldn’t freaking believe it. Truck is simply turning around obviously missing a turn or something. Turns out - they pull into the driveway of my partner’s family house. They’re there to pick up a bar table they bought off Marketplace. Dark came and I got down, walked out and my partner’s father asked if I saw anything. I said No because he isn’t a hunter and I wasn’t in the mood the talk about the bad luck. The two yahoos lifting the bar table onto their trailer go - You should have seen the giants that were right around the corner! They were right along the road! They ran back across it. Such is life.

  41. Well shows what I know. 10 doe, a button and a scrubby 5. Would have arrowed 3 of the doe but they never came within bow range. Frustration of hunting a plot I guess. First doe might have winded me too as the winds were swirling and at about 90 yards she stopped dead. Stood there for like 4 minutes before blowing and taking off. No matter how hard you try you can’t beat a does nose. Sun was dropping so thermals didn’t help. Funny to see the scrub buck chase the doe around too. She wanted nothing to do with ass. 44. Bang... Flop. Great Nephew got his first. He's friggin pumped. He started tearing up. Deer was already in the field. Made it to a round bale for him to rest on. 120 yd quartering away shot. He hit a little high, but the shot was downhill. Clipped the spine and exited tight to the opposite shoulder. That's his dad ( my nephew) in the pic. It's as close to the deer as he can get as he's highly allergic to the fur.
