  6. I'm lower middle class, but I make it work, mostly thanks to my wife who understands what it all means to me. It's pretty expensive for me, and it's 100% worth it. My gear is nothing special. A bear recurve, an old Excalibur, and a couple older deer guns. Our land is what is expensive. My wife and I bought it from my family, which has owned it since 1968. It's a lot between land payments, taxes and maintaining my trails, stands, and plots. I wouldn't have it any other way though. Nothing like hunting the land I grew up on. I skimp in a lot of other areas, just to ensure that I can continue to do so. If I didn't have the camp, I'm not sure how much I would be hunting. I feel pretty blessed to have what I have, and hunt the way I do.

  8. Had some work to do up here at the farm, and moved a cell cam. Will head up in the back in a bit to sit till almost dark. A spot from the ground where I can see a good ways. Not expecting a shot. But ya just never know? I killed a bow buck here a few years ago.

  9. Good 8 is out making the rounds. Might be just a morning move with rising temps coming. Perhaps the decreasing daylight will continue to drive the rut in spite of the higher temps. We shall see but mornings are improving.

  10. An interesting end. So as most know, part of my spot is an orchard. A perk is that I almost always pick an apple to eat on the way in and out in early season. So today I ate most of one and tossed it as I got within about 20 yards of my stand. Now mind you where I tossed this there is a row of apple trees with apples on the ground. So around 6:20, 2 doe came out downwind of me but not spooked and feed in front of me. They were smaller doe but not fawns. Some guys here would classify them as delicious and shooters, but not for bow for me so they got a pass. The one proceeded to finish off my mostly eaten apple it was funny to watch. Had another doe show up as light was fading too. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  11. We’re in. Not high hopes but nothing better to do, eh? Daughter had her year end soccer tournament across the counties. Daughter scored the final PK in a shootout in the 5 spot to win it for all the marbles. Down to her. Nailed corner net. Place went wild. I am ok if no deer tonight lol.

  13. How the 30 30 performs on deer? That round has probably killed more deer then all other rounds combined. It's the perfect whitetail round.

  14. Funny story about apples and deer eating them. Stand I was in this evening a few years ago I had a button that wouldn’t leave and I wanted to get down. He was bedded so I chucked my Apple core at him. Hit him in his head and the dang thing proceeded to eat the apple. I can’t throw a baseball accurately to save my life but somehow zinged him. Ive heard of deer eating apples or cores from hunters before but it’s pretty funny when it happens for real in front of you. I would think they’d smell you and alert to it but I guess not.

  16. Saw 2 doe and a coyote this morning and I saw another coyote late last night and it decided to pop a squat on my deck. He was sniffing around, bet there was a bunny under there.

  17. I did the same last week. After watching the doe clean one fawns face for 10 minutes I decided I wasn't going to break them up. Maybe I'm just getting softer... Sent from my moto g fast using Tapatalk

  22. Dropped this one at a fellows property that is said to be overrun with coyote. Didn't hear any and only saw one, but one is better than none. The property is very overgrown and this trail is the clearest lane I could find to hunt. Going to wait till the leaves drop to hunt there again. 10/20 Pm hunt

  23. 9 doe big 6 chasing 2 doe around for 20 minutes. Had him at 10 yards for about 3 minutes. He was just catching his breath so he could continue chasing . Love this time of the year.

  24. 4 bucks this morning at from 8:15 to 10:15 all 60 yards downwind ,3 moving S-N , 1 N-S .couple decent 8s together, one was pretty fat I’d shot him so I can take a 3 1/2 weeks break till gun . Getting up at 5AM a couple times a week is getting old. Raked a path on way out , this one is a a good 150 yard walk through woods with lots of sticks . i think I’m at 15 buck and zero doe this year , the zero doe I’m positive of . Buck has an error of plus or minus a couple . Next hunt maybe Friday .

  28. Finishing up these last cpl hrs of work then heading up on the Tug for the northern tier gun opener. Meeting some friends and family up there should be a good time. Temps are warmer than desired but there is enough of us to put on some drives. Good luck to everyone going out. Sent from my moto g power using Tapatalk

  30. The beloved St Bernard or alpine mastiff. It was a compromise with kids between cute and huge. I have my eye on an English mastiff too but the breeder is a ways out from any litters.

  31. I shit you not, a few years ago I ate half of my apple and tried to set it on my bag, it fell off and a deer trotted outa the woods and ate it in the pitch black before sunrise.

  34. You don't need the best of anything to kill a deer. What's the point of working everyday if you're not going to spend the money?

  35. I think board is a great example of the diversity of hunters and how success isn't unique to one group. There are guys here who haven't bough new camo, if at all in decades, they hunt out of cobbed up old blinds, I've seen a guy tape his broken rubber boots together. Hell, Dino makes all his stuff from scratch. Then you have guys running 7 cell cams, buying $30k tractors to make food plots and always into the latest greatest. Success has found both groups. Tech and money will never replace woodsmanship and "free time". However, and this is a big however. Land. If you don't have land or aren't close to good public land than yes that's where money for a lease or owning property does come into play.

  36. Had a doe and two fawns run in to me from my downwind side. Came in hot lol. She was not very big so did not try to move on her. She's buck bait right now. If she was a bit fatter I'd of made orphans no problem. Only 1 adult doe here is safe and that's my triplet machine. Trips 3 outa last 4 years! If she busts and blows at me again that deal may be off too lol! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  37. From this map alone I would say there is no way to tell or even begin to. My suggestion would be to map out a long still hunt with the wind in your face.. Be sure you know where your going, walk it all slowly and this will give you the Intel you need. Take a set of binos and spend the whole day still hunting and getting the lay of the land, pick a day when the ground is wet to do it quietly, look for food sources and bedding areas and trails being used. Up north I've found areas of beech trees I like to come back and visit by doing this that you would never know existed. But to look at just this map there is basically no way of having any real info. 38. I’ve always had the most success on natural or man made barriers; creeks, old fences, etc. Travel corridors are my go to, I’ve never had much luck with hunting over food sources or bedding areas.

  39. It’s no different than buying a Lamborghini or a Chevy, both will work, one is more fun and comfortable. Don’t buy into the bs, buy what you want and a financially able. We’re lucky to live in a state where many land owners let people hunt for free.
