  1. Doe down! I got a late start this morning and was starting my walk to a blind on the neighbors place. I was just walking past the barn when she stood up in the brush about 50 yards away. One shot, she made a quick dash and dropped at the edge of my back lawn. Easy retrieval on this one haha. First tag I’ve punched in 2 years. Gonna get this nanny taken care of and then head back to the blind for the rest of the morning before I go down to state land for the afternoon sit.

  2. Been slow on my property. I saw a fawn yesterday that's it. Neighbor behind us shot 2 8pts a smaller buck and this giant. 23 inch inside spread.

  4. Was a tough opening weekend with some crazy winds in 8F, but it finally came together with an 8Pt yesterday at 2:55. Watched him make a scrape and then he came over looking for the doe that cruised by about 5 minutes earlier. The 30-06 did it's job at about 70yds, dropping him right there.

  5. And it happens again! Good buddy right across from my property shot this 12 pt this morning! Spectacular deer. I can see him in his stand from my house. One year I drove golf balls at him! lol So happy for him. BTW I never saw this buck during bow season.

  8. Uneventful weekend for me. Saturday I did see a dozen or so doe with fawns. Had a little basket rack 5 chasing a doe around and that was it. At 3:15 Saturday my dad text me this as it's standing 75 yds from his porch before following a doe down to the river bottom. I wasn't able to make it out today but maybe I'll have to run out to dad's after a short day at work one day this week.

  9. Kid we took out for youth got the 3.5 we’d been letting age up. Rather than be salty he didn’t make it to 4.5 I’ll post a pic for others to enjoy. Seriously, if someone is happy with a buck don’t be a douche bag. You win some you lose some but act with dignity. Wouldn’t want that loser mindset as a neighbor.

  11. Wasn't in the stand 45 minutes and I saw a little buck run behind me, then I saw he was chasing a doe that I never saw. They did a big loop back into the thicket, they came back out about 10 minutes later and she came to 30yds on field edge so I decided to break in my new rifle. She went 25 yds and tipped over. Drove the truck right to her. Home and skinned by dark. Sent from my moto g fast using Tapatalk

  13. Life has been crazy these last two weeks, shot a 4 point last morning of crossbow, standing on my tree sticks while taking my stand down. Told my self if he didn't come within 20 I wasn't shooting, he came to 10... Wind gets the assist on that one cause I never saw him till he was 50 yards away and my crossbow was on the ground. Sat am, dad and I went out, I saw a small buck and passed, dad had 2 doe coming up field but a small one under him that busted him, he shot a big doe across field ( I can see them where I'm at) They jumped up 20 yards and I put a follow up shot into her from 216 yards, she was dead 20 yards off field edge with 2 holes, His was 1 lung and lived, mine took out the rest of the lungs.

  17. My philosophy is hunting time is limited, and there arent any deer in the cabin. I have taken some of my best deer in the most miserable conditions. I have to admit I love to hunt the slop. That said, I do not go out with high winds ...risk of falling branches, etc. I wont say I enjoy goint out in the crappy stuff, but you do what you have to do. That said, I would much rather hunt the calm right after the storm.

  18. I am a huge fan of Ross Reels, and the Evolution R Salt is their hallmark saltwater model. I've also fished with a Nautilus and been extremely pleased. We are headed to Belize in March - I'm building a new stick on a CTS blank, thinking about putting a new reel on it, but not sure I can justify the cost for what amounts to a yearly destination trip. I will mention that a nine weight is awfully big for bonefish. Permit and tarpon, yes, but if I had to choose a single, do-all blank, I'd go with an eight. Of course, if I had to choose two, I'd go 7 & 9. So there's your unsolicited advice, worth every penny you paid. Oh, and practice, practice, practice. Saltwater casting isn't anything like fishing around here. I've been guilty of spending thousands on a trip, only to look like, "an old woman swatting a bee with a broomstick" in Patrick McManus's words.

  20. Buck down! He came strolling in, nose to the ground the entire time. I hadn't even planned on hunting today but my wife encouraged me to go out later in the day. No treestand, no blind, I sat on the ground just waiting to see if anything would come around. As dumb luck would have it, this is my first mature buck I've ever killed and I wasn't even trying. 20 minutes after I sat down back against a tree, boom. I had been seeing this buck on a few of my cams, one in particular that I took down awhile ago as movement went cold. Bullet went in from the shoulder and out the opposite side, he went about 10yrds before I heard the crash. His heart was a jellified mess. Savage 220, 3M.

  21. A friend of mine brought his 1 (his birthday was yesterday) year old home trained Labrador with him on our duck hunt yesterday. The dog was well behaved and did a good job getting the ducks. No whining in the blind or barking ever, really good for a young dog. Video shows a couple of his retrieves.

  24. That’s a cranker. That’s always the mission. Find the biggest on the property and settle only for him. Unless a bigger stranger comes along or your neighbor gets him first. Lol

  30. Yeah snowing. Buck just laid there looking at them. Definitely saw them. They said he was alert looking at them. Almost like he was waiting for them to turn towards him or something before he bolted. 100 yard shotgun shot thru the woods.

  31. Practicing QDM is great, but that doesn't entitle you to all of the deer. All it took was one guy killing "your" deer and now you aren't letting them pass anymore? Sounds like your real devout to QDM anyways ... Sent from my moto g fast using Tapatalk

  32. The warmest cold weather gear I have is a set of Refridgiwear coveralls, the mainstay of the folks who work up in the artic. I wear them all winter long here on the farm doing chores, I can tell you I am never cold with those things on even in sub zero temps. Not my cup of tea for hunting clothes as they are very heavy and bulky, movement can be cumbersome, they would probably work for someone that sits all day. Stay away from anything made of cotton. Al

  34. Hey everyone, haven't been on here much with the new job and have had very little time off. Missed all of bow season. Made sure I was off this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Sat dark to dark on Friday with the crossbow and didn't see a single thing. Went back to the same stand this morning, not sure why since I saw nothing yesterday. Well I sat thru lunch without seeing anything. Finally about 2:30 I look over my right shoulder and there is a very small deer just outside the thicker stuff. Think it was probably a button but not sure. Was just glad to see something, it quickly went back in the thicker stuff and I figured it was bedded in there. At 3:30 I thought I heard a grunt but with the wind I wasn't sure. I waited till it was calm so it could be heard and hit by grunt tube a couple times. 30 seconds later i hear crashing and see the white tail of what I assume was the button bounding away. Crap, that wasn't what I wanted. Not even a minute later this guy comes out of the thick behind me on my left, I look saying what are you, get a glimpse of the rack and say to myself besides dead...lol. I shoot and he runs 30 yards, starts plowing and I put another one in him. Was a little disappointed to see the 2 on one side but the rack is unique. Glad I could punch a tag with the limited time I have.

  37. Grunted the buck in at 8am and shot the doe around 9. Perfect shot on him, he dies within 50yds. Shot ended up being liver on her, gave her three hours, came down from my stand and she was within eyesight, around 60ish yds. She's laying flopped on her side. She gets up and walks off slowly. Caught up with her later about 200yds away bed down eventually after getting permission from the neighbor. What a guy! He came out on his side by side, distracted her while I snuck up on her and put another bolt through her heart. She excited shortly after. Then he helped me load her up, drove us back to my truck and helped me gut her and load her in my truck. I couldn't be more thankful to that neighbor, he went way above and beyond. Truly an ambassador of the sport. Sent from my Pixel 4 XL using Tapatalk

  38. The biggest offenders are the ones who left, you can go back and look through anyone of these shitshows that seem to happen on a regular basis and you will see the same cast of characters involved. It is an embarrassment. Start hitting the ban button and you will see this baloney stop immediately. Al

  42. My two daughters are coming in Thursday night. I bought Teddi's license and a muzzleloader stamp. Just so she could hunt Friday and Saturday. That crossbow is dead on. We will sit in the same spot she got her first deer 2 years ago. She earned another 3 day pass for being Cadet of the week!
