  3. Jesus Christ blessed me with an almost perfect “dmp” tag buck today. 2-3/4” spike on the left and 1” on the right. Now, I can still hunt for the big one later this weekend, up in the nz. He has always come thru in spades, when I am in need. We now have enough meat for our oldest daughter, who is moving back home in December. 37-1/4” chest girth. Oysters and fillet mignons are in the fridge, liver and heart are in the freezer, and carcass is hanging in garage, in near perfect hanging temps. I don’t feel so bad now, about missing my first opening weekend in 40 years, due to the Buffalo November blizzard of 22. Three antlerless deer came out in my turnip patch at 7:30 and I shot what I thought was the largest doe. So much for “tall tine tubers” . They ought to call them “tiny tine turnips”.

  4. This guy showed himself this morning and tripped my trigger. Another heart shot, so we’re gonna be out after another doe for the rest of the week.

  5. My two for Thanksgiving week. The doe popped up when I was headed to a blind on Monday, and the buck stepped out on Wednesday. The buck is most likely a 2 1/2 year old 8 point. I’m extremely happy to have taken both of them after 2 years of basically not hunting, and with limited time to hunt this year!

  6. Had a bunch of does feeding in the cut beans last night. Waited to the last second for a big one to show. He didn't. At 200 yds the 165 grain Nosler BT exploded her heart.

  7. She looked bigger at 70 yards, but I'll take it. Heats off, now I can stop stressing and look for a big buck or bear.

  9. Had a decent opening weekend with 9 being dropped. One pretty decent 10 and a couple 8’s. Doe tags were filled so the trip was another success. Not many bigger fellas on Cam’s in the area this year. This guy is the biggest I could find so it’s him or bust unless a bigger guy shows up on the scene. He plays the game well, had him close a couple times during bow but not close enough. The game continues….

  10. I really wish I had taken a pic of it hanging in the tree. It was the wildest thing I’ve ever seen. He had jumped or flipped into the tree I circled, and his antlers were around the trunk about 6 feet high, holding him straight up with his rear hooves touching the ground. My son and I were confused as to what he was doing when we crested the hill lol.

  11. Depends on whether the does are straight or LGBT?.....

  13. In the spot my Dad’s tree stand was. I first started hunting here which him when I was 6 or 7. His tree fell many years ago but I decided to put a ladder stand up. Let’s see what happens.

  14. I got out for the last hour of daylight on Monday and seen one deer about 10 minutes after sunset. If it had antlers, they were tiny, and it was just a little too far for a shot at that hour. This morning (Thanksgiving), was the first I have been able to hunt, of sz gun season. I saw a single deer on my walk back to my natural blind, 1/2 hour before sunrise. I showered with scent free soap, and deployed Evercalm, when I got to the blind, plus wiped some on my boots. At 7:30, deer started converging on my position from three directions, all of them antlerless. I shot, what looked to be the largest, as it stood in the middle of my “tall tine tubers” patch. Whitetail Institute ought to call those “tiny tine turnips”. It turned out that deer was a spike, with 2-3/4” on the left and 1” on the right. Oh well, that’s another filled dmp tag and now I got oysters. He had a big enough liver in him for (2) meals, and a 37-1/4” chest girth. Best part is, I can still hunt for a big one, up north later this weekend. The Good Lord always comes thru when I need Him. It would be hard to imagine a better deer than this one this blessed Thanksgiving morning.

  16. The RCBS chargemaster came yesterday, I got it setup on the bench, watched RCBS's video on how to operate it and today after I got my chores done I sat down and put it to work weighing and charging about 100 256 Winchester mag cases. Right off the bat I could see this electronic job is not as fast as the old tried and true beam scale, drum powder measure and bench trickler. After using the old stuff for over 50 years and thousands of loads I got pretty good at using it with both speed and accuracy. That being said I do like this gizmo even though it is slow. After I changed my loading routine I became more familiar and got things moving along. When powder charging I always did the whole batch at once and then moved on with the whole batch to the press to seat the bullet. With the electronic job I started with a sized case, charged it with powder, then set the powder pan right back on the electronic charger to get a new charge and continued on with the newly charged case to the RCBS summit press where I seated the bullet. This charge master is very accurate right to the tenth of a grain, A little bit of a learning curve but once I got into the groove I started cranking out rounds at a decent pace. So while I do like the thing because it is all in one and takes up less bench space I do not believe it is any better than the old drum measures and beam scales. Maybe as I use it more I will shine up to it. So as far as loaded ammo I am set for awhile, I have some 60 gr Wichester open points, a pile of Missouri Bullet company 85 gr lead hard cast that duplicates the old 25-20 round, then some high octane stuff 90 gr Sierra HPs and some Barnes 80 gr copper, I had to remove the plastic tip so they would fit in the magazine and so they would function in the rifle. 21. For me, in my stand (or spot) by around 6. before, I would try to get there as early as possible, like even as early as 5:15 but thats just alot of watsed time , IMHO; besides, you get cold quicker that way and its not even shooting light yet!!

  22. Agree, all depends. I had a spot that had you walking the side of a 45 degree mountainside that was all rock. Walking this in the dark you risked falling and breaking a knee cap. Only safe to walk during decent light. Also have a spot on dead flat terrain with trails that can be easily & safely walked in the dark.

  24. Nice , I’ve been playing cat and mouse with our wide 6 again this season . Had him at 40 + and again at maybe 10-15 in heavy cover during archery . Best of luck hanging a tag on him.

  25. Two of our group scored on Sunday with decent eights, and two more got it done last night, one with a bonus doe thrown in for good measure. The bucks were all 2 1/2 -3 1/2 year old deer; the doe was a swamp donkey. We are seeing good numbers of scrub bucks and tons of doe. I suspect our luck is due to a late soybean harvest of very small plants that left 30% of the beans still hanging in pods. The field was planted after the summer drought started and never took off. Bad for the farmer, great for our season.

  26. I’d like to stay around 300, 400 would be my max. I already have 2 grills (gas and charcoal) so I’m not looking for another grill. I want a set it and forget it type smoker, I don’t have time to babysit one. My old one was a Cajun Injector brand, which I think was a rebranded Masterbuilt, and it did great for me. The only thing I didn’t like was that it wasn’t wide enough to do a full rack of ribs without cutting it in half.

  27. Thats been my experience. I think scent control is more important than attractant scents.

  28. Weirdest situation I ever had with scents was with Tinks 69. I had a doe come in to a fake scrape that I had made with a horny 4 pointer following her. She came very close, went over to the fake scrape and grabbed a Tink's saturated cotton ball I had hanging over the scrape and, I believe, ate it. I turned my attention to the buck, and when I looked back at the doe she was running off and the cotton ball and string were nowhere to be seen.

  30. My father in law has had this pitboss pro series a couple years and he likes it. It’s easy to use and has been trouble free. He’s done a few racks of ribs, when we were up there, and they turned out great.

  31. Thank you! I never saw this buck before today, and I’m judging by body characteristics. I could be off, I saw him on the hoof for long enough to think “that will work” lol.

  32. I bought this Char Broil electric a few years ago and it does a great job. If it ever dies on me I will buy another one. Friends and family love the smoked wild game I have done in it. valoroutdoors.com. https://www.charbroil.com/analog-electric-smoker-18202077

  33. A doe caught me off guard this morning as I was getting ready to leave. Figures, the whole hill is snow covered except where she was standing. But the wind was in my favor so I just stood still and she drifted off calmly. Managed to put another couple hours into this elevated blind I’ve been working on for weeks here and there. In it now, and being mostly closed in it feels pretty nice out of the wind. The one draw back though is; I am not a builder, so it feels a little wiggly to me. And, now I can’t get the theme song and opening scene from F Troop out of my head! : 0

  34. We are still seeing movement morning and evening. Fresh scrapes and rubs in the last week. Definitely still breeding. We have low presure on our land and it's still very exciting.

  35. 72 yard broadside on mid sized doe, dropped her where she stood. No tag soup this year, now I can relax and hunt trophy bucks and bear. Was hoping a buck would swing by and check out the crime scene, but no such luck.

  37. I saw 28 deer opening day from my tower stand, and not one of them had an antler...Second day I saw one deer, a buck, but he was tiny...I doubt he would dress out 75 pounds, so I let him walk...Yesterday I saw 12, but again no bucks... I have two DMPs, but I prefer to hold off on shooting does this early in the season...All in all, I am having fun seeing lots of deer.. Sooner or later a decent buck will show up.. I am not a trophy hunter by any stretch of the imagination, but I'd like to shoot something with a little MEAT on it, unlike that little skipper I passed up Sunday..

  39. Was a long last 3 days. Put in well over 8 miles since opening day. Very few deer were spotted by my hunting party. I took my dad home about 1030 opening morning and made it back to my stand by 1230 at 115 this big doe popped out at 30yrds. As soon as I realized she was alone I let her have went maybe 10yards. Be back out tomorrow morning at my opening day spot. @REDNECK4LIFE32and I walked part of the property today and came across fresh tracks of what appeared a couple bucks trailing a doe. Never did see any of them.

  41. Hey everyone, haven't been on here much with the new job and have had very little time off. Missed all of bow season. Made sure I was off this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Sat dark to dark on Friday with the crossbow and didn't see a single thing. Went back to the same stand this morning, not sure why since I saw nothing yesterday. Well I sat thru lunch without seeing anything. Finally about 2:30 I look over my right shoulder and there is a very small deer just outside the thicker stuff. Think it was probably a button but not sure. Was just glad to see something, it quickly went back in the thicker stuff and I figured it was bedded in there. At 3:30 I thought I heard a grunt but with the wind I wasn't sure. I waited till it was calm so it could be heard and hit by grunt tube a couple times. 30 seconds later i hear crashing and see the white tail of what I assume was the button bounding away. Crap, that wasn't what I wanted. Not even a minute later this guy comes out of the thick behind me on my left, I look saying what are you, get a glimpse of the rack and say to myself besides dead...lol. I shoot and he runs 30 yards, starts plowing and I put another one in him. Was a little disappointed to see the 2 on one side but the rack is unique. Glad I could punch a tag with the limited time I have.
