  1. It seems to me if they were to allow single shot shotguns during ML season, there would be more people hunting that season and most of them would be using single shot shotguns. That would defeat the purpose of the primitive weapons idea that ML seasons were designed to encourage. A single shot shotgun can be reloaded very quickly, compared to a ML. That really negates the idea of hunting deer with a rifle that has to make the first shot count and requires special knowledge of an antique weapon to be successful. We already have modern ML rifles that have removed the mystique of ML use. I don't think it would be wise to remove the need to use a ML during a ML season.

  2. And I say "BALONEY" to that idea, muzzleloader hunting season is just that hunting with a muzzleloader. Personally I use sidelocks and enjoy all the idiosyncrasy that goes along with hunting with a muzzleloader, that is what was supposed to be the whole idea. Al

  3. For me this is a pretty involved process, and this year even more so because I have finished two guns for just this purpose, a 24Ga. and a 16Ga., neither has been patterned yet. Heck, half the fun is tuning up a new gun and maybe making a new box call, or even a new slate call. Robby

  4. Just keeping an eye on them around here. Keep it pretty simple. Not much involved in filling a couple tags. We feed them well all year so the process stays easy.

  6. I like the single-shot smoothbore shotgun in ML season idea. It might have put an extra deer in my freezer last year, during the Holliday ML season. I caught the tail end of the Christmas blizzard on the first day of that last year. A considerable amount of wind driven snow must have made it into my muzzle that morning, then melted down into the powder charge, when I brought the gun in the house at lunch time. That was the second mistake I made that day. I should have left the gun out in my unheated barn. I also should have covered the muzzle, when hunting in the wind driven snow, that morning. That evening, I suffered my first misfire with my in-line ML, saving the life of a nice sized broadside doe at 50 yards. My old, NY-arms 12 ga single shot smoothbore would have had no trouble getting the job done that day with a plastic-cased smokeless-powder slug. If such a law passes (and I don’t believe it ever will), I would only use that shotgun on rainy or snowy days.

  7. It’s probably tough because it was frozen before it got past rigor-mortis. That’s a very common mistake with deer hunters, and a critical part of the process if you like your red meat tender. Several ways to fix that now: 1) Take the frozen meat to a processor and have them grind it for sausage , hot-dogs, etc. 2) Get a pressure cooker, thaw it out, chunk it up, and can it. To prevent future occurrence, age the carcasses before processing at 33 - 43 F for 5 days if 1.5 yr old, 7 days if 2.5 yr old, 10 days if older. An old refrigerator with the racks removed works perfect for that, if the outside temperature is too warm.

  8. There are muzzleloaders that can be purchased for the same price as a single shot, if one can not afford a muzzleloader they can not afford a shotgun. You have put forth the lamest argument I have ever seen and I for one am not buying it, poor my ass, this is all about screwing up a special season to be more easy. Al

  9. Last year I had a retarded Tom that came in I could have shot several times, would have been like shooting a barnyard Turkey so I let him have a pass. He was the only Tom I saw, had a pile of Hens though, would like to hear and see some Toms this spring. Al

  10. I have almost perfect turkey habitat right out the back doo, in the last ten years I would say the population is less than half what it was. Too many birds of prey, coyotes, and all the fur bearing animals no one is trapping these days, they're all nest raiders! It has made hunting more of a challenge and even more exciting the you ask, 'you talk'n to me?'. Robby

  11. I'm still trying to understand why you started this thread at all? I'm not sure what you're even trying to say? Can you not afford a muzzleloader but have an old single shot smoothbore in your closet? Where do you fit into this? Do you even hunt the muzzleloader season now? Do you even hunt? You don't sound well informed of anything hunting related. Or is this the typical, "Well if they'd just add an implement that's easier and more beneficial for me then I'll gladly start hunting that season."? Sent from my moto g fast using Tapatalk

  12. No sense? You get on here and tell a guy to put his call into the DEC to change a hunting season when DEC has nothing to do with hunting seasons in ny state. Yup your 2 state knowledgeable about hunting. Best stick to your you-tube videos.

  15. Now if they would all start selling this for $90, your prayers would be answered LOL. I'm not looking for any special seasons, just waiting for things to warm up a little bit so I can get out fishing. Caught between ice fishing and open water fishing right now. In the meantime, thanks Phantom for the fun discussion.

  16. If you scroll down on this webpage it shows the states that the Nitrofire is legal in . According to this map they are already legal in NY ( Green ). And quite a few that might allow them ( yellow ) . Personally I dont care for them for one reason only . The powder charge is already pre determined . We know that many muzzleloaders need to be tweaked to figure out which charge and which projectile works best . We know all muzzy's are not created equal even though its the same gun . I have 2 TC White Mountain Carbines and each one likes a different load . One shoots best with 90gr of powder with a 350gr Maxi Hunter and the other shoots best with 80gr or powder with a 375gr Maxi Ball . As far as a single shot shotgun allowed during muzzy season , I hope they never do that up here in NH . They are totally different firearms. https://www.traditionsfirearms.com/nitrofire

  17. And let's not forget the "Climate Change" misinfo that affects us all in the price we pay for everything. https://www.prageru.com/video/the-real-climate-crisis?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=post&utm_campaign=5minvideos&fbclid=IwAR2HztpQmnLqtFujq3pgfZ07tGOkkNp-3m9_CSuMXYepshjsb-es94gxsBQ

  18. My bad , I thought they were a cartridge like a shotgun slug
    1 point
  19. They do not load a cartridge. They load a bullet down the muzzle and a powder charge cartridge in the breech. So they actually are a muzzleloader as far as the bullet goes, but not as far as the powder goes. That's why some states are not allowing them. Remember, we are talking about a "special" season, not the general rifle deer season. What makes it "special" are the limitations imposed to take part in it. Chip away at the limits and you risk elimination of the "special" season.

  20. The concept of a single projectile stays the same, BUT loading it and keeping Traditional "style" hunting stays the reason for the season and its regulations on Implements used. Yes new scopes and such make them more of a fine tuned machine vs the past.. But There's no reason to add Single shot shotguns and straight wall cartridge's to this season.. Stop with the changing of everything... Either ADAPT to it or wait your turn... Just like the crossbow guys that don't want to shoot a vertical bow but want them introduced into Vertical archery season.. ADAPT or wait... Stop trying to change everything. There will never be a time in History where everyone is happy at the same time.. ITs simply Impossible. "Some" change is good, of course, and "Some" change is also Unnecessary or Un-needed

  21. My goodness!!!! This sure brought out the opinionists. Without reading all the responses, and not giving it much thought before typing, my first reaction is that I am so sick of more and more laws and regulations roping people in and roping people out. Being that I prefer to become adept with and hunt with what some might call primitive weaponry, I guess I would like it best if they further restricted the existing muzzleloader season to matchlock's, wheel lock's, flintlocks', and those cap lock's as found before the twentieth century. But, solely hunting with a archery equipment that I made myself right down to the arrow shaft and broadhead for years before I took up muzzleloading, I was still, against those that wanted to ban the compound bow, wanted to ban the release device, and later wanted to ban the crossbow. To me, if a man wants to hunt with a rock, I say as long as he is well practiced with it, have at it. Years ago there were those, and many of those, that wanted to restrict the regular deer season to single shot shotguns, and yet look what we have now. We have more and better technology in making the taking of wild game easier and more efficient, yet I don't think the success rate has grown all that much. So I guess, to me anyway, I have always thought people should work on their hunting skill's, as opposed to working overtime to afford the latest and greatest in game taking. Bottom line? I have no answer, the decisions for such a thing will be made on the basis of things that have very little to do with hunting and game management, cuz, this is a city run state and we have little to say on how things are done in any respect. What is this Republic I hear spoken of. Robby

  22. Yea your Probably right it will take a Lobbiest to get that past , Make a donation to the right people you know how it is. The crossbow companies figured out the Formula . But they get you to spend a arm and leg on there products so was worth it to them dont think shotgun companys need that season to sell there Products so they are not going To hire lawyers to get that past or make donation to the right people . Also the The muzzle loader companies would fight against it anyway cause they want you to buy their stuff .

  23. Its all about money. That's why states keep expanding what's legal in "primitive seasons", they want to sell more tags. Period. If it were a "conservation tool" like they claim, they'd just extend the regular seasons or increase bag limits to achieve the same goal. It's a money grab. The state just wants more money. Shocking I know. We should oppose the idea on that grounds alone.

  24. I feel like all seasons are set up for the hardcore hunter like myself. No matter what firearm is allowed at that point of the season you will not change the number of hunters in the woods. Also I don’t care weather you have a faster single shot shot gun a muzzleloader is a lot more accurate to longer distances even if it’s a little slower reloading the first shot is the one that matters.

  25. Talking with someone once about them using a traditional side lock rifle, they said "But what if it doesn't go off?" To which my response was... "Then you're muzzle loading!" (I'm someone who hunts with lots of single shot rifles, single shot shotguns, has hunted the regular gun season with a flintlock several times. I find this idea not just a "no" but almost offensive)

  28. TooK a first-timer with us today. My nephew just started him hunting. Birds flew pretty well, but were higher than we like, especially in the wind. We let the new guy shoot first. The birds would instantly flare wildly, making for difficult follow-ups. We killed 31.

  29. OK, I'm going to tell you guys a story. Years back as I was heading to my blind in the dark to dumb hunt turkey I was walking along the trail and got hit by that overwhelming sensation to take a dump. Well I took care of business and moved on to my blind and hunted the morning till about 10:30 and started to head back down the trail to go home. I came upon the spot where I did my business earlier that morning and a bear had eaten that big steaming pile of crap right down to the ground, yep completely gone. I've eaten bear meat in the past but it was that morning that I decided never again. Just ain't kosher.

  30. Was desperate to get a haircut this afternoon so went to Walmart. I was starting to look like a sheepdog. After the haircut I went to pick up some shotgun shells in case I ever manage to get out to chase rabbits or squirrels again, and was faced with the reality of almost nothing on the shelves and basically giving my life story to be able to complete the purchase. What have we allowed ourselves to become? This is NUTS!

  31. I hunted with a H@R single 12 for many many years. I got really good and fast at reloading it, I would hold 2 rounds in between the fingers on my left hand. Had guys comment how quickly I could do it . So that right there is the advantage over a front loading Muzzy.

  34. The Legend of the King & The Fisherman The palace meteorologist assured him that there was no chance of rain, so the king and the queen went fishing. On the way, he met a man with a fishing pole riding on a donkey, and he asked the man if the fish were biting. The fisherman said, "Your Majesty, you should return to the palace. In just a short time I expect a huge rainstorm." The king replied: "I hold the palace meteorologist in high regard. He is an educated and experienced professional. Besides, I pay him very high wages. He gave me a very different forecast. I trust him." So, the king continued on his way. However, in a short time, torrential rain fell from the sky. The King and Queen were totally soaked. Furious, the king returned to the palace and gave the order to execute the meteorologist. Then he summoned the fisherman and offered him the prestigious position of royal forecaster. The fisherman said, "Your Majesty, I do not know anything about forecasting. I obtain my information from my donkey. If I see my donkey's ears drooping, it means with certainty that it will rain." So, the king hired the donkey. And so began the practice of hiring dumb asses to work in influential positions of government. And thus, the symbol of the Democrat Party was born. The practice continues to this day!
