Not even close to being a 200 lber.  She is probably 145 lbs which is bigger than normal . Big does always look bigger than they really weigh.  One year in Northern Maine one of the guys shot a 177 lb 8 pt buck and another guy at my camp shot a 168lb Doe which is HUGE !  These were weighed on certified scales at the tagging station.  That huge Doe looked WAY BIgger than the buck hanging on the game pole. She looked like a horse hanging there . I can honestly tell you the 168 lber   field dressed looked  much bigger than the Doe in your pic

Been using the conventional hot seats while hunting for many years, they can become a bit uncomfortable if sitting on a cold log or wet ground for extended periods of time. I am going to try and give my Butt a break with a bit better seat this season so I picked up something different to try. Used it a couple of times Squirrel hunting and it is pretty good so far.

I use a smaller rectangle shaped one that has the same camo pattern and black material on the bottom. I just slide it inside my coverall when I'm still hunting. I just take it out when I find a spot I want to sit in ambush mode. Its not quite as thick as yours but it does the job and very comfy. I use that because I dont really like having something hanging behind me. If you are going to sit in one spot for a long time then the one you posted would be much better.

  3. For Maine its my Browning Bar 30-06 Carbine . Weighs only 6 1/2 lbs , fast as lighting on target acquisition with the Leupold VX6  1x6 Firedot scope with duplex reticle . There are only 50 of these rifles that were ordered from Browning by Performance shooting of Constable NY back in 2017. That was the Browning Bar 100 year anniversary. The serial numbers reflect that . The sequence was A100201 through A100250. I bought numbers 226 and 231.  Best shooting rifle I ever used in my life. I hunt with one and the other is stored away.

But I still bring my Rem 742 30-06 with me that my Grandfather gave me as backup . i usually carry it on one of the 7 days I'm up in Maine as tradition to honor him for always bringing me hunting as a little kid.

Ironic you should mention State Farm. It just so happens there are a bunch of property owners in Farmington that are complaining about All-State. It has been reported on the news and Senator Pamela Helming has been involved.

We fought for 18 months(using an attorney)  just to get the amount we were entitled to for the "structure" and another 7 months in court for the contents. You are correct  on the full replacement value coverage and you can't have enough documentation to support your contents value.

It is not just us. I couldn't begin to tell you how many horrible insurance stories we have heard since our incident.

We have been trying our best along with others to advance Senate bill S1797 & Assembly bill A7139. They have been sitting for over two years. New York is one of three states in the country that does not have "unfair claim settlement practice" laws that will help policy holders.

Steve is that who you had for insurance was Allstate ?   I had Allstate Ins on 6 properties of mine which included my house, plus our cars . I own 16 real estate properties in all. Allstate only has 2 of them now . A garden style condo and a townhouse condo with a garage under which will be switched to another company shortly. I found out recently that Allstate silently eliminated a loss of income clause on rental properties . When I discovered that I called the agent and asked where the clause is . He said the income loss would now come out of the rebuilding funds. So if I want that loss covered I have to increase the rebuilding cost policy.  I just got a quote from another company for those units that covers 60K higher rebuilding costs Plus a loss of income allowance of 110K for one unit and 135K for the other . The new company is $125 for one and $135 LESS than Allstate's less coverage policies.  Pays to shop around !

Another property I took away from them when I started switching insurance companies is an old farmhouse with a detached good size barn . At the time they told me this was the only policy offered for that type of property. Its called a depreciative policy . So even though I was insured for 600K , they could at their discretion if I had a claim , they had a right to age the property and only pay what the old structure was worth. I didn't know that. The Allstate agent never brought that to my attention. When I was shopping prices a different agent saw the policy and explained that this was junk . Allstate could legally get away with paying me 200k even though I had a 600K policy . Wow was I pissed. But that was the only policy offered and was told that all insurance Co's had the same for older structures . Not true. I now have a 675K policy of full replacement cost plus loss of income clause of 135K built in . This is a totally remodeled farmhouse thats a rental property. The kicker is my new policy is just 135 dollars more for triple the coverage if you figure in Allstate's depreciation policy.    Screw Them !

NY never had a system like that. State Troopers would have random deer check stations set up on the highway or by the bridges leading into the City. Honestly I think these businesses would not like the problem of hiring someone to check deer, unless the DEC does it.

The shops in Maine and NH that tag deer are acting as as agent for the state. The shops charge $2 to tag or $5 if you want to tag and weigh the deer on their certified scale. Most of the guys doing the tagging and weighing are volunteers because its a fun social event.

The best time is when a kid brings in his or her 1st deer . They get swarmed from the other hunters there with handshakes and High 5's congratulating them. My youngest son who was 14 when he got his 1st deer still mentions how he felt like he " belonged " in the hunting community after having over 20 hunters and 2 game wardens who were there all gave him the thumbs up and handshakes . And of course , they all want to hear the story ! :good: . He is 26 now and that event left an a lifelong impression .  You cant put a value on that because its Priceless !

Unfortunately Doc I will more than likely be missing my third season.

Rebuilding your life from scratch is very tedious and time consuming.

It breaks my heart not being able to hunt but one has to set their priorities.

Steve are you still battling with the insurance company over your house after all this time ? WTF !

  7. Maine and NH where I hunt have had paper tags and licenses for at least 5 years now .  This type of sealed tag and license holders do the trick . had no issues using these. I print out a couple extra sets of licenses and tags to have as spares in case something gets lost or wet , but haven't needed to use the extras .

What I dont like is the reporting system . I know its cheaper for the state to have harvest reported online , but its detrimental to the small gun shops that are tagging stations . Also the biologists usually set up at the tagging stations to examine the health of the deer brought in for the 1st week of the season . Now they might not get the real info if everyone reports online. I still will go to the tagging station. Its more fun and I like supporting  the shops .

Great post and thank you for the info- I feel alot better now!! So, youve been using for 15 years, then? How did you first hear of use of Permethrin for ticks? I never heard of it till my Uncle mentioned last year that he uses it .

NC here is one last post i will make to you and anyone else on this subject . Watch this video . It explains everything about permethrin . Where it came from and how it works. It addresses the non existent health risks also. Happy hunting this fall everyone !

Actually NC , its been at least 25 years I have been using it. I think around the mid 90's . At first it was all aerosol cans that were available. I didn't like them , but it was better than having the little bastids crawling on you. The spray bottles came shortly after and I never looked back.

The company told me that once a tick gets on your treated outfit for 15-30 seconds it can no longer bite you. It neutralizes their system and basically turns them into a zombie. I have watched this show after I walked through a patch of high bush blueberry bushes. I looked down and had 5 freakin ticks on my outfit. I watched them and like clockwork after 15 to 30 seconds they started lifting their legs up like they were walking on hot coals. So they started to aimlessly scramble around. They all jumped off within 2 minutes. They probably died within 30 min . Gotta love being out hunting knowing you are a tick killing machine !  So if somebody asks you " Get Anything ? " You can always say ' No Deer , but I did kill 100 ticks "

As a general rule, I never buy premixed stuff. You never know how long it’s been sitting on a shelf in some warehouse. Get the concentrate and mix your own.

Bugs , when I talked to the company I asked that question on how long is the shelf life . they told me it stays full strength for 5 years. Then it will start to degrade . with them selling tons of it to the military , I dont think sitting on the shelf is an issue . Even Amazon runs out of Sawyers spray bottles  now and then around springtime and hunting season . They always get more in , but sometimes you have to wait a week or two.

Check out this video.  You can save a LOT of money if you mix your own.  I use this guys method and it works.  Same % concentration as Sawyers.   One bottle of the unmixed stuff goes a LONG way.  The Sawyer ready to use stuff is not cheap.

I have used the Martins 10 percent that he mentions in the video. It did work great. But here  is a little important info that this vid doesn't mention . I have always heard that any concentrate above 10 percent is either all or partially formulated as " petroleum based "  You DO NOT want any of that !  You will smell like a diesel engine. It is NOT unscented . I know that most of the 10 percent concentrates are water based. Never buy the petroleum based. I have no knowledge about the 13 percent brand he is mixing . It would take you at least 15 times washing your outfit in degreaser to get that smell off. And you might never get it all out.

The 10 percent Martins is now triple what I paid for it. Still economical but not as much . And you are risking what else they are using as inert ingredients in the concentrate. Some of those are NOT Scent Free . Dont forget those 10 and 13 percent mixes are made to use in barns and on farm animals. They dont care if its not scent free ! It is not designed to spray on clothes ! I  know the Sawyers is mixed with all Scent Free ingredients. Although I have used one bottle of the Martins in the past , I will stick with the Sawyers .

One last thing . DONT buy the aerosol cans. The permethrin is scent free. But the aerosol isn't. It has a little chemical smell that lingers for a while. Plus sometimes the can runs out of aerosol , and the can is still 1/3rd full of permethrin .

  12. I think you are panicking for nothing NC . I have been using the same Sawyers .05 unscented mix for at least 15 years. Been spraying it on any clothes I use to go in the woods for summer checking cameras and cutting up fire pit wood, hunting in the fall, and  and a very light spray for winter. I have no concerns.

I spray it both in and out . For summer I wear a very thin coverall with a pair of jeans shorts and a tee shirt underneath. So the coverall is rubbing on my skin. Never a tick bite , No rashes of any kind , or any other issue . I actually put a heavy spray on that coverall and let it  totally dry for a day.  I know tons of people doing the same for hiking , checking cams , and camping . Never heard of any issues from anybody . The campers I know not only spray their clothes , they spray the inside of their sleeping bags .  No concerns or ill effects from anyone. And its been years they have been doing this. A couple guys I know actually wipe a very light diluted mix on their dogs . No issues there either. But dont spray anywhere near a cat where they can get it on them while its wet. They could get sick from it. Its fine after its dry. I actually have sprayed our  cats bed and dried it . Found dead ticks in there from them dragging them in when they go outside. Never affected any of the cats at all . Once the spray is dry , everything is good to go .

One last thing . I spoke to the company a while back. One of their biggest clients is the military. Permethrin works on all kinds of critters. Sand fleas in the middle east , and all kinds of swamp bugs in the jungles. Do you think for one second they would let our soldiers use that stuff if they knew it was harmful to them ?

Been using the old proven Coleman Fuel stoves as far back as I can remember, they just work great.:good:

RC  i'm with Al on this one . I have the propane version instead of the fuel version of the same Coleman stove . Work great for us cooking venison stir fry on both tailgating at football games and in the ice shanty ice fishing . We have percolated coffee with no problem on it. Maybe the propane version would work better at temp control because the pressure in constant ?  But I see no reason why the fuel version wouldn't work either .

  14. Wherever you read that was blowing smoke .  Why would Browning  stop making the best semi auto rifle ever made .

As far as a Browning Bar 243  they offer it in the Browning Bar MK3 - Ovix , the Browning Bar MK3 Stalker , and the Browning Bar Mark III

They discontinued offering the 243 , 7mm Rem Mag , and the 338 Win Mag only in the Browning Bar MK II Safari . As far as I remember I dont believe they ever offered the 243 in the other Browning Bar DBM models

Wont hurt to try a turkey choke to see how much better it would be at that range or if you have a 35-40 yard shot

Visited the permit office this morning and had my permit amended so I can purchase semi auto rifles.

That will be $25.00 and as for now, never have to go back for any rifle purchases.

    Al

Al  , me looking at all this from a NH point of view ,  they are flinging all this bullcrap at law abiding citizens in NYS is strictly all about the money ! All these worthless fees are filling some politicians pockets !  Why do you need a pistol permit in order  to buy a rifle ? They are nothing alike . Nobody has ever asked me for my pistol permit when I buy a semi auto rifle or any rifle . Sounds like the politicians just creating another roadblock .
