    In-laws head back to FL tomorrow after spending a week here. Will finally get to go out for a solid 5-6 days starting Thursday.

    Plan on still hunting, created this cheat sheet to pick spots to go to based on the wind. Daughter started us out strong with a freezer filler last week.. hoping to tag one with the muzzy and then get pickier after that.

    Hunting Scopes Today

    Leupold has a fixed x2 and x4 that very light, sub 10oz and don’t have exposed turrets. If you are active duty military they offer a great discount.

    I run a Leupold 2-8x33 on my muzzleloader and 2-10x36 on my 7mm-08. They have served me well and given me no reasons to think about changing.

    Salmon River - Non Flossing Setup

    My father is coming into town at the end of September for 2 weeks and we are going to do some fishing. We are considering making a trip up to the Salmon River and I want to catch fish, not floss them. Does anyone have success float fishing with some egg sacs or worms? Or is it just a bunch of flossing?

    Buck Bed

    I was out grabbing a trail camera this afternoon and bumped a young buck from his bed. It was a perfect setup for him with regards to cover and topography.

     

    Being my first year “scouting”, it was neat to finally see a bed in person setup just like they talk about on all the youtube videos.

     

    The bed itself was under a patch of pines, which with the current stormy weather helps block the wind. To his back uphill was a blowdown that hid him pretty good. In front of him he was overlooking a drop off and below him to his left was a small stream.

    My trail camera had been up since April and I didnt hunt in there this season. I dont think anyone did. There is a nice doe group and a couple 6-8 points that walked by my camera during daylight hours in season. As well a pretty good size black bear.

     

    I am gonna do another scouting trip in a month or two when the snow subsides (burned about a 1000 calories hiking 2.6 miles according to my watch!) And hopefully locate a few more beds and then hunt it in the fall.

    In super early.. wow 800yds through the Oriskany Flats is equivalent to about 10 miles on dry land lol.. what a workout!

    Tons of sign back in here but no trees to get in, no shooting lanes!

    Oh well.. Im not doing that direct path through the swamp again

    That means Ive got 3.7 miles back to the truck.. 2 of which I am going to do my best Elmer Fudd

    I guess my point is that 70’s are summer like weather and they’re not going to be as active in the heat. When I lived down south I would run at dusk to avoid the heat. Deer will breed at night to do the same.

    Guy in PA did a study with 150 trail cameras.. 2 years ago it was really warm early Nov and there was hardly any movement. Soon as a cooler day came, boom daytime movement.

    Ive taken the last week off strictly because of the high temps.. tomorrow is going to be 18 degrees cooler than today, I will be in 6K with my rifle and a doe tag in my pocket.

    Newbie on the Salmon River

    So I moved to NY is 2017 and I live about 45 minutes from the Salmon River. I have never been a huge fisherman but spending the past year in FL without the family I got pretty into surf fishing. Just a few days ago a couple of buddies and I went up to the Salmon River and tried our luck. Out of the 4 of us only one of our guys hooked up x2 but was unable to land any. It was pretty awesome seeing the salmon jump and swim around me as I stood there in the river. 

    I am reaching out for someone to give me the basics for a proper setup. I have a few random fishing poles at the house, an ultralight 4ft rod that I doubt will be sufficient, some surf rods I used in FL, one is 9ft and the other is 10ft medium-heavy actions and then a regular 6 or 7ft medium action rod that I think can get the job done. My smaller poles have mono main lines and my surf rods have braided. 

    From what I gather the setups are actually pretty simple... just 3-4ft of fluorocarbon leader some split shot and then a hook and a little plastic egg.... is the half inch measured from the inside or from the outside of the hook? Which type of hook would you recommend? Circle hooks were the way to go on the beaches but I dont know about up here on the river. Any specific bait choices?

    Then it gets into technique.. we pretty much just did a drifting method.. I would walk along till I found a good run then would throw the front, middle and far sides of it a few times and then move on. 

    What do I do once I actually land one? Do I hit on the head with a mallet to knock it out? How/Where do you keep it cold while you continue to fish? 

    We fished near the town called Altmar, is that the best spot or should I drive further up towards the mouth of the river?

    Final Question: What are some unwritten rules/etiquette I should know so I dont end up getting into a fight with the veterans?

    Went out last night with my brother, we decided to get super aggressive and get as close to bedding as possible. This motivation was driven by the fact that our previous sits were just a bit too far away and we didn't see movement before darkness set in. Well I am glad we did that because as it turned out there were absolutely no deer in the bedding area of the first place we stopped. We walked all around there and didn't bump one deer.

    With that knowledge and the fact that it was just about 4pm we called a hail mary and went to another piece of public with the idea to just a hunt/scout. I have learned so much doing these scouting focused hunts and it is the third time in less than a week where we jumped a doe exactly where I would expect her to jump from a bed. The only problem is I realize the obviousness after the fact. 

    I just need to slow down a little bit more, look around and think just a little bit longer and I think I can actually get one before they run. Now this is super hard with a bow, if I would of had my muzzleloader or rifle it woulda been a done deal. I am in a good state of mind though and gaining confidence.

    Entering the season my e-scouting skills were pretty high but my in the woods in the moment hunting awareness has been less than ideal. All of these encounters are slowly but surely building up that skillset as well. 

    Next hunts will be this weekend in the ADX with a muzzleloader. The odds are low but the foliage is peak, the beers will be ice cold and I will have a smile on my face no matter what... October Lull my ass!

    Well Ive been scouting more than hunting so far this year and I am hoping it will pay dividends in the coming weeks. Went out to a wetlands/swamp area today and was very impressed. Almost overwhelming how much food and trails I found. Usually it is the opposite problem.

    Also ran into a random guy coming out of woods and he offered to let me hunt his private 100 acres, he doesn’t hunt. I wasn’t asking, he just offered. Hell yeah!
