  1. Agreed. Ive seen toms shy away from jake decoys. But with that setup of the jake trying to mate the hen, ive seen them come hauling butt in to kick some tail. Never know and the birds will let you know what they want. No harm in trying!

  2. Getting my coffee and headed out in a bit. Won $100 bucks on a $5 scratchoff yesterday so maybe my luck will continue today! Yesterday both my grandma and my fiance ended up in the emergency room at the same time. So it was a lonnnngggg day to say the least. Few hours to hunt before work and im feeling good about it!

  3. anyone ever try using a full strut mature Tom decoy? I bought one a few years ago and never used it, I'm concerned it may scare off younger birds...and I'm not opposed to shooting Jakes, so don't want to mess up any potential opportunities.

I have the flextone thunder chicken and its a strut style. Bought it on sale and have yet to use it. Im in the same boat where i think it may scare birds off more than call them in. Right now its got a real jake fan on it and a beard of a bird i shot a few years ago. Its mounted on the wall lol. I may give it a whirl an see whag happens
  4. Honestly, he will probably be huntable later that day if it was legal. I have gotten back on birds that i missed a shot on the very next morning. Now they may seem skittish if you set up exactly as you did when you spooked him.

Just completely switch it up. use decoys or not depending on what you did prior. dont go to the same spot.

    good luck.

X2. Ive had friends miss birds and i setup later in the morning, around the same area and harvested the bird they missed. Like above they may be skittish. Go get him!

  5. Same here in 8f. Dad shot a jake saturday morning, had a mature bird working and he said it gobbled quite a bit. Just never materialized. From thursday til noon today i think ive heard a total of 5 or so gobbles and only a handful of shots. Its early yet!

  6. crazy gobbling in 4b from the roost this morning. then some a-hole and his kid try to set up 10 yds next to me. pretty sure the birds heard me yelling at this d-bag because they stopped gobbling and never came out to the field. not to mention this is the 3rd time I had to kick this moron off the property in the past 3 years. he tried to justify it by saying he's hunted there for 20 years yet he's been told not to hunt there by me, my father in-law, and the land owner. I had to go through so much BS just to get today off from work and this piece of trash ruins my hunt in a matter of minutes. had to run and gun the rest of the day, had some gobble back but nothing came in close enough. it's too bad because I would have had at least 4 gobblers in front of me if it weren't for that no good trespassing jerk.

Maybe its time to take the not so nice approach and call mr green jeans. Its apparent he isnt listening to you, multiple people have said get off the land, and whats even worse is his kid is learning its ok to trespass.

  7. if you do the garbage can turkey make sure you burn the galvinization from the INSIDE of the garbage can. you have to make sure all the galvinize is off the metal on the inside as its toxic. what we have done iin the past is roll up a bunch of newspapers and put them in the garbage can and lite them up, while its burning we toss in cardboard tomake the fire hotter. This is done until the can is really hot then we wash it out and check to see if its clean, if not repeat step one.

used to pluck them and cook like a conventional bird except we covered the bird with bacon.

now I breast them out, wash them off good and then put each half in a 1 gallon ziplick bag and put a full bottle of wishbone italian dressing in each bag. that goes in the freezer, when I take them out I put the bag in the fridge and thaw it. once thawed I put the entire bag contents in the crock pot and add about 1/2 a drinking glass of water, turn on low and cook for 8-9 hours.. there is rarely anything left for leftovers!

we have done them the same way using sugar cure instead of italian dressing.

Yep forgot to add that you should burn a few fires in it first!
