Looks like 3 differnet buck  definitely 2 on side view photos

I agree Gman.  The more closely I compared, definitely three different bucks.   None of whom have made an appearance since I sat a stand, but time is on my side I hope!

I make a pile of butchering waste/deer carcasses, dead coons, 100 yards behind my bedroom window.  I sight in my .22 dead on at 50 yards, and I aim a couple inches high at 100 yards.  I regularly kill crows with it, off that bait pile.  I do take the wind into consideration on the shots, holding off farther upwind even it is really blowing.

I also killed a big male coyote on a moonlit night off it one time.  He only ran off about 30 yards, after taking a .22 LR yellow jacket thru the lungs from a 100 yard range.

No too many 22LR rounds that will only drop 2" at 100yds from a 50yd 0.  I found 5-7" pretty common.  What are you using.   They must be hot and light!

  3. I previously played with this at the range.  I will say with 100% certainty no matter how accurate your 22 rifle, at 100 yds, any wind/breeze plays a huge role.   Hitting a 10" target was pretty easy but trying to put hole on hole at 100 was very difficult.  They are pushed way too easy.

At 50, it was very easy to put a solid group together.  I think as they slow down and start to lob in past 50, they move.

WOW!! That last one is a brute!

Interesting that you said they were "finally showing up"! I haven't had any shooters on cam for the past ~10 days. Out of curiosity, I looked back at last Octobers pics and the shooters didn't show up until Oct. 11th. Then, between the 11th-23rd, 5-6 showed up!

I had a few nice ones show up and then nothing since Oct 2.  That said only 3 cameras are working now.  Need to pull the others to figure it out.  But they can stay away all they want as long as they show up between 11/4 and 11/12.  The buck I saw in person last night has never been on a cam.

I use a small flashlight when going into timber in the dark of the morning. Like most I will cover it with my hand and only use what light is absolutely necessary. I've used a headlamp maybe 3x in the past five seasons for walks in or out. I don't like them due to the preference of how much light they throw even on low. I can say that I do walk in, in the dark, without a light on, for about 75% of my hunts. I'm typically in the seat 1 hour to 1.5 hours ahead of legal sunrise. I don't agree with the you aren't going in or out in the dark without a light at all. It's not always needed.

Above all else key for me is low and slow. Low or NO light, and slow/steady entry. I struggle with that in the AM for the first few walks in each season. I tend to rush in, in the morning, due to excitement, but I am getting better at that over the years and as the season progresses. My partner is like a bull in a China shop walking in or out in any condition, lol. He also walks warp speed naturally...ADD/ADHD has made it near impossible for him to slow down. Crushes his seat time, too when needing to do all dayers. One time we had the same trail in and his stand was first. He got up and I literally ripped the steps down, lol. Stuck his butt up there all day.

Knowing how David can climb a tree, I am betting he was in and out of that stand even without steps without you knowing.  lol

  7. Drop the weight Larry. A 40lb compound will kill ‘em just fine.  Not sure where you are at but I bet higher than 40.  40lb recurves kill ‘em just fine with much less power than a compound.

I hit one in almost the same spot with a 16 ga Remington slugger last fall (his head and front shoulder was hidden behind a tree and I aimed as close as I dared to the tree).  He only ran off about 40 yards.

There is a big difference in how a broadhead kills (by hemoraging) and a bullet (by shock and hemoraging) and that usually increases the room for error considerably.

He made it into some heavy cover but there was a decent blood trail on the sparse snow so it was an easy track.

I never tried the heart stab for finishing but it seems like a good idea especially if you want to do a shoulder mount.  The jugular slit works good, if they are on their feet.  Use your right hand, if you are on their back, and have them in a hammer lock (or antler hold ) with your left hand.  I only did that once with a doe.  Not sure if I would attempt it again.

Its pretty easy in that position to simply choke them out.  Be sure to get that choke hold in deep and squeeze hard.  Saves wear and tear on the knife blade.

I have one hang on left with sticks , it’s home , so it’s not going up today . Perhaps I’ll bring it next time , but sit in back stand and see just where he’s coming from ,then hang it if need be .

Blue dot was 40 yards from him that’s not a shot i take

Edit : hanging it in tomorrows rain is a good idea ,I know where he walks over here .

im not much of a small hang on guy anymore though …

I agree with FSW and would simply hang it around lunch.   If thats the open woodlot area vs the thick stuff, find a big ole tree as you will want cover since you are moving the furniture in his living room.   Remember that wind too when placing the stand.  Knock him down Lar!

Set this cam Sunday midday. I believe this buck is one I got photos of beginning in late January. No prior photos or appearances. Didn’t think too much of the potential because I expected he was only using our ground in post-season. Zero preseason or velvet photos. Now, whammabammadingdong.

He seems to have a thyroid problem.  Big boy there.

Hmm sounds tempting. I hate not being able to range new tree spots before first light

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

Probably a minor issue but I always could spot the tree etc before I was able to read the RF.  Not anymore.  It’s kind of cool.  And like you, I range spots not animals.

  12. So I couldn’t find my cheap rangefinder and bought this replacement.  Limited experience so far but I do love how you can range in the dark and actually see the distance.  It changes from a black to red readout in the dark. Already way better than what I was using.  Says it should be able to range a tree at 1000 and a deer at 700. If it does half that I am ahead.  But for the night ranging alone, I give it an A+.   Plus it gives you actual calculated drop for many common rifle ammo if you happen to care.  You set the ammo and it runs the numbers when ranging so you know the drop at the range you se.  Not bad for a $200 RF.  And yes it calculates ARC for bow or rifle.
