  1. Got my first bow in '88 my second in '07 . Killed deer in every year in between, and since .
  2. Oh ya all set. 6 stands in place, bow shoots great, first 3 days off. First 2 weeks of nov.off. First 2 weeks of gun off...... Plus my firefighter work hours leave plenty of other days to hunt ! Shooting, sleeping, soup cooking shack built and in place . Trails bush hogged, corn mostly down, freezer empty. Kids away at college and a wife who does not care how much I hunt and owns farm land. Ya I'd say I'm ready !! Good Luck to all !!!
  3. yuppie I thought that word died 15 years ago or so..... I know a few folks with money and big city highrise jobs. I've hunted with them, one good friend of mine is a lawyer in seattle lives in Bill Gates neighborhood, just to give you an idea of money were talking here. He's a traditional bow hunter who's shot everything from bear to mountain loin . I've backpacked through waist deep snow with this yuppie in 12 degree weather....... I know company owners with BMW's etc. that live for hunting. Guys I believe the desire to hunt lies inside of all men, white collar or blue. My friends law office has many lawyers who belong to duck clubs, there is big money in these duck clubs. His first 'bonus" from the managing partner was a Browning..... Also just who do you think has the bucks to go to Africa and pay 50k to drop an elephant ? a factory worker or construction worker ???
  4. Yes. I don't care if you fence in the whole state, the fence is there for one reason to keep the deer in. Not for me,no thanks. Most of tv hunting is nothing more then killing cattle. fences, limited humans, deer that run into humans have learned humans are no threat because if your not 5 1/2 or older you walk. Game managers, biologists. feed, minerals yada yada. Just like a cattle ranch . I hunt wild game not raised, feed, managed, farm animals .
  5. JK as the kids say ( just kidding) about a bridge. My woods and thick brush stand i trim little as well. But in the thick fields we bush hog wide paths as one can shoot into the thick area from a far, and up above, and they walk them because we NEVER do. In fact we walk way around the whole area, but the deer feel comfortable in there as humans never enter. If you keep hunting pressure low, as we can do the deer move around more, and during daylight. its farm land they'er always clearing ditches, brush lots, mowing fields, cutting hay, etc. Its normal to the deer to have stuff cut down. If they tied to avoid it they have to move to arain forest or something. Cut a hay field they come out soon after you leave, cut the trees out of a ditch as well as along both sides and regrade the whole ditch . A couple days later its loaded with tracks.
  6. Down around me as well. The farm I hunt plants around 3,500 acres I think, not all corn but I'd guess half. I asked if it was early he told me right on time .
  7. sorry for the late reply, been having trouble staying logged on,my lap top seems to work though ! I hunt in 8h on a large farm, all the rules qdm/ar whatever are farm rules.
  8. I would say AM. Although I hunt more AM's...... Where I hunt the afternoon is a bust untill the last 1/2 hour most of the time. I'm talking bow season .
  9. Hum the farmer bush hogs 14 foot wide lanes through the thick brush for me as well as a 4 footer that brings them out by my shooting house. The deer are walking 'em a day later. I'm thinking of building a bridge across the drainage ditch so they cross it at one spot .Maybe even give 'em Easy Passes !!
  10. Right now i have 5 stands up. I hunt farm land small woods and thick brush and 100's of acres of crops. Of the 3 in the hard woods they range from 3 to maybe 10 yards into the woods. The one in the brush is 40 yards in.The other is in a hedgerow. So I walk in through open crop fields. Its quite, I can often see pretty good and I avoid walking along the edge of wood/field . Prefering to leave my scent out in the middle of the field and not along the edge of the woods I want them to enter or walk along. Much of the corn is down now, and there is a lot of clover and hay so walking is easy . I gave up deep woods stands long ago, to noisy to get to from. Plus in the evening I can see the fields good to know if the deer are out there or not.
  11. Ill try, it blows away all the "red neck" tree stand pics I've seen in the magazines. I had a couple on my computer which are gone now I'll ask him to re send them. Its to big to really hunt out of as you can see out of all sides at the same time..... Good luck in the upcoming season !!
  12. I'm more worried about me getting hurt then one of thousands of tree's where i hunt. seeing as how we bush hog 14 foot wide trails, clear drainage ditches ,cut trees down that over hang crop fields, that 100's of trees a year right there. The farmer who's land I hunt has 17 foot up in the air a 24x14 foot "house" on 6 phone polls ! I just built a 4x8 one that is on the ground for now up on phone polls next year . Deck is pressure treated 2x6,floor 3/4 inch ply. walls roof 1/2inch. 2x4's about 24 of them, primed, painted ,drip edge and roofed .
  13. Well I'll trust your judgement. I too build wood stands, however I don't trust nails at all. A 3 1/2 inch nail through a 2 inch board leaves 1 1/2 inches to go into the tree and some of that is bark now add some sway, well not for me. I use 6 inch lag bolts with washers, as for sway just cut slots and back the bolt out a 1/2 turn. I build them like a deck on house only stronger due to sway, height and the fact I'm in them !!
  14. Good luck . I have bi-focals and they suck. I've learned that if I put the pin on the target no matter if both are blurry and hit the release it works fine . Hey some guys don't use pins at all.......
  15. Hum... I hunt QDM and AR land . Heres what its done around me. Big tracts of land that used to be hunted by many are now hunted by few. The many are left to look for a place to hunt, often on less and less land near by. The QDM land has plenty of deer and we shoot a few does and a big buck here and there . The ones kicked off the "QDM" land see very little . I shoot a few does and am waiting for all these big bucks......
  16. http://www.13wham.com/news/local/story/Deer-Jackers-Arrested/llbZj3IJskKBZzb8U6ZbUg.cspx OK now lets do our part. I'm working on finding out what town/court this will go to. Then we ALL need to write to court at let it know how we feel about this crime ! No slap on the wrist, come down as hard as possible. The courts don't often see this as a big thing,so lets change that !!
  17. I use a couple ladder stands. For me I like them on wide trees and with a few big branches all around as I helps greatly in hiding you. I do not trust the straps past a year or two. I bolt them to the tree . I have no trouble putting up a one man 15 footer myself, but help works great. If the tree is big like I like 'em. I have the strap tied off on one corner before raising then using a long branch to tie other end to and "walk" it around the tree .I then tie the stand to tree at as high as I can reach from ground, then climb and hook strap . Sometimes (most lately) i carry in my 24 footer ladder as its safer to work off that .Yes sometimes i have carried it close to a half mile.....
  18. Pretty much the same as doc.... I'm a gear and survival guy though. My thinking is this, I don't know when I'll "need" it so I always carry it. I've been hunting farm land when one of the guys says,'hey lets go hunt my sisters camp this afternoon "Big woods unknown to me, glad to have my pack of stuff. Heres goes.first aid kit, water, food, extra flashlight (headlamp and very bright hand held) extra batteries compass, dressing kit (pen, gloves butt out),fire starters, handwarmers, extra gloves, face mask as well as warm hat or ball cap (one is on head one in pack) Prusik knot. Haul line,(i don't leave them hanging from stands) extra tree steps. I often use tree step with Pursit tied to it to clip harness to on large trees .Large trash bag, for , emergency rain gear and so on. Cell phone, one hand opening knife (spyderco) and one flashlight in pockets at all times . Hey toss that TP and get a pack of baby wipes guys !! Much cleaner and good for washing hands after gutting. Oh and I took a piece of sleeping pad and cut it to fit the shape of my pack and stuff it down inside the back of the pack. This way if i want to sit on say a rock or its wet out I can sit on the warm pad, plus in my pack its padding against my back .
  19. Ya a week ago I found a fresh rub on a 5 inch tree, backed out came back last night and hung a camera as it was to rain over night . Next time it rains I plan to hang a stand during the rain in that area then will stay out till the season. Good Luck.
  20. I had a video on an old phone of a buck coming up and smelling then pushing with his nose my hen decoy . Funny as hell. I always thought that if a deer saw a turkey hanging around, he would feel the area is safe.
  21. I'm in the upper 50's #. My old bow i had to go way higher and got less FPS..... No need with these new ones ! All pass throughs and 5 inches into the dirt. I don't know, I can do 16 dead hang chin ups, and while my deadlift has dropped to under 400#s its still close, so I fugure I can pull back way more weight just don't know why I'd want to.
  22. So a few years back I bought a rattle bag . Next morning I go to a spot behind a friends house, I'm on the ground in bow season behind a big blow down. A first light i hit the bag and in seconds a buck comes running in at just out of my range..... Best ten bucks i ever spent i think. never had any luck again with rattling............
  23. I do good early on in bow . Although I hunt hard all season. This year I got 2 weeks off in bow 2 weeks off in gun. Plus I can hunt 3/4 of all days with out taking time off....
  24. I hate those shows ! Bad shots, few pass throughs . look when they go back the next day to find it, ya know it was with 10 guys 3 dogs and 2 thermal image cameras. Look come to NY walk on a farm or public land then shoot a good 2 1/2 ! Know what they'll never even try...........
  25. Then there is Johnny. He works the group opposite me , I never even knew he hunted till one day he said something about it. Turns out he killed like 23 bucks in a row . Most of them while smoking and drinking coffee.....
