  1. No for some reason they don't ....I have to add water if there has been a dry spell but snow in winter and then the rains keep them pretty much full...again unless they have had a lot of traffic...turkeys really like these as well
  2. I have a 40lb push spreader and that is how I spread the seed and fertilizers and lime... I over seed because I've learned that even after discing it in...it only takes a turkey to find one seed and they just kill a plot...to keep deer at bay I spread Milorganite and that gives the corn time to grow..plus fertilizes it.....all seed is spread by hand...clovers and small seed like that I have a hand held spreader...pic shows main section of corn when still small.... there are two others
  3. That's a nice buck....all these he has potential...hahaha I can't wait to mach those up with deer taken this season...sorry but geez
  4. The sorghum is new this year and I planted for birds wild and domestic...we have chickens....My seeding rate was...lets say a tad thicker than I really wanted in some areas....which did this....caused a good barrier to one side of the corn from damage...for the deer and raccoons dont travel through the sorghum.....I over seeded the soybeans with it ..too thick...but it grows so slow that the beans came up and grew........ one area the deer hit hard and another the rabbits and deer took out...well the sorghum grew and the bigger it got the less the critters hit the beans...so I have a lot of soybeans...short...with beans on them and still green..pic below...I read that deer wouldn't hit grain sorghum until it headed out and then they eat the soft new shoots...good protein...nope...never touched them...also told they would hit the dried seed heads....that remains to be seen Now I tell you this knowing I will plant much more next year...for the deer here never hit my turnips....S.beans...or chicory hard the first year planted....now they flock to it...I'm also going to test growing Sun hemp next year...Now that I'm fencing one sid of our property I have another 3acres I can open up and plant...so I will be testing a few more things
  5. Now that sums up a problem this country has...... For one thing it's not just my problem...and the land owners around me have to deal with the same things and longer than I have...which is why posted signs around here are so prevalent....I mean I thought I was bad but some ppl have them every 20ft...a bunch of us have each others #'s on speed dial and call when there are problems....as long as there are guys that think they can get away with crap because they kiss certain DEC ppls back sides we will have problems...the DEC wants proof...Well I don't care how many cars the DEC ...sheriffs or State troopers get fixed or used car deals individuals get...or how many dinners the DA reputedly gets taken out to....everybody here now carry cameras when afield...cell pic don't cut it.... no excuses...and the next time some AH tells me to go FMS(4 times)when they are carrying a weapon...well I'm sorry but that will be a call to the cops as a threat of bodily harm...Frustration and anger left the building on that one...now I'm doing what I'm good at...taking care of business
  6. There's poaching problems in this area every year...same ole same ole....when they are driving through well over 300acres of totally locked up hunting land spotting deer at 4 a.m. ya just know whats next....like the guys I caught trying to shoot our goats with a compound out the back of their Dakota....or like the guy who drove past me at my mail box with his kid in tow and 200ft down the hill stopped got out and stepped into our woods to call turkey....then acted surprised I yelled this is private property...as his truck was stopped in front of one of my many posted signs ......mind you ....our mail never arrives before 12:30pm...I'm not looking forward to gun season ....which is why I'm now building covered blinds and putting blinds in ladder stands they won't know where I am and they won't know where the guys I have coming into help this years are....before I could hear a shot and get there pretty fast...I've had more than one dead and wounded deer on our place....but now with the cross bows... things are going to get rough...already know of 3 PIMA that bought them....there are going to be surprised dirt bags this year...besides the new IR's they can deal with guys that want continued permission to hunt us...no excuses

    rain

I think your just showing how sick of all this rain you are....and so am I.....
  8. the 4a.m slow driving trucks and spot lights scanning everything...and they are always surprised to herar me yell HEY from the darkness on our porch...not as if they don't see our lights on or probably go through that ever year ....they light hits the sky before going off and the engines rev up as they hurry away...and the foolish games begin.........
  9. rev ev...your right...our daughter dropped getting her tags due to increase in cost and her lack of time to make it worth while ...even though she has all the equipment...and I've put out feelers to ppl on waterfowl hunting but gotten no bites ...makes me miss gramps ...not that I'd even want to go out with them but just a cup of coffee and a talk through getting started....
  10. Huh that's interesting...kinda like pheasant hunting but in the woods?
  11. it was a $9.00 bag of feed corn from T/C farm and tractor.....Virgin soil that I weed killed...disced...disced...disced...limed...limed ..limed and put down just 100#'s of 15/15/15...Oh and 50#'s of Homistat in early June
  12. yes what I did was buy a plug for over flow...then a rubber stopper for the drain......I then bought a 7x11ft tarp and lined the tub...put large flat rocks in the bottom to hold the tarp down...it's only really needed to hide the ugly blue of the tub...but also the dark colors help reduce algae growth.......solar garden fountains(lilypads) during the summer help keep skeeters from breeding and water cleaner...tubs are free....I use to sink them ...but frogs moved in and raised tad poles...water gets foul and I have to clean more than once a year...so now everything is above ground
  13. I like to have water close to the plots and natural food source on our place...only one area has lots and lots of water.....much of the property is water free so over the years I've set up water stations and the critters love em...I like to construction scrounge and put the word out for remodels...I had a UGLY sky blue enamel on steel tub dropped off...Mr B. flipped...that's NOT going in our woods...I told him to trust me...got it filled yesterday...it is in an area that gets spring water but that drys up in June...this should help the critters stay on us...near several apple trees and a mowed area that has clover growing where ever I mow
  14. Burmjohn.... You asked if I had pics around Oct...so this is the last time I'll be near there until the season opens took a few..its actually still under ripe and not started to dry ....about same as the farmers field not far from me...we planted the same week...but the deer are hitting it from all the droppings they've left and the ears are a good size...considering how many ppl keep telling me it wouldn't produce decent ears ....showed this to a guy and he was very surprised then said look me up in the spring I have 2 tons to give away for turkey planting ...OK.!..he liked the fact I plant grain sorghum for the birds
  15. just got some to try on practice arrows..did as instructed and used a tall heavy vase to make sure I got all immersed....two shots and one one split in half and after three another popped over nock......It would have to be an emergence situation for them to be used during hunting for me
  16. If it ain't broke don't try to fix it!....in my case if you've been successful for 15 years shooting instinctive don't go to sights just because you won one...you'll end up loosing a buck of two life times
  17. taly........ if you have a license and a gun it's shoot on site year around from what I've read
  18. we never see rubs until late...yet I have one stand I hit way before light and usually 4days into bow season I can sit and listen to tremendous fights going on just yards away in the dark good sized buck cruise that area all the time...scrapes are another thing though...always see a few heavy hit ones in that general area...this year should be really good....the beech are and have been dropping like crazy...temps are suppose to take a nose dive at the end of this week...sightings should pic up

    Bear Hunting

Well I called all over the state and they even had me contact one poor Capt that was just walking out the door on his western elk hunt vacation...this is what was explained to me ...Yes it is just ....and read this carefully in the rules.... 1.5 FLUID ozs...the Capt who happened to be out of reg 9. told me this is the deal....once you take say honey or bacon grease and soak stips of cloth or wood chips(this works well with the bacon grease) the scent is no longer in liquid form so a larger amount can be used...for how would they ever have the capacity to measure it? also with the grease...not baiting because the material is burning and thus not readily available for consumption as a food source...it's fire and smoke...I use a small throw away grill so that the grate holds the cloth and or chips....I have dry bacon soaked chips all ready to go and the legs hold it up off the ground a bit...I clear a big circle to dirt light it up make sure its going well and climb into stand...this tends to bring in yotes as well ...my problem is not seeing good sized or single bear...and close enough for me to feel good about the shot with my bow
  20. I didn't know it was legal to hunt turkeys with dogs in NYS.....
  21. Ya know it's all on how confident you are in your shooting and the shell you choose....I've been downing deer with clean shots for 30+ years with a 20ga 28in smooth bore using 3in. Breneke rifled slugs and a single tiny orange painted bead at the end...most of the kills were between 60 and 110 yrds and shoulder dropping shots....so IMO your best bet is to shoot a few different slugs with the barrel you have and if your not comfortable then consider switching things up.....matching gun ...ammo and ability is the only way to go...good luck
  22. Actually it was Conesus court ...I think..... and the JP was not amused from what we were told...but had to do the mandatory state fine regardless.....
  23. Just copied them off the DEC site...Sept thru May it will be in my hunting pouch We know a guy that shot a deer and dragged it out to his car and a waiting DEC officer....When asked if he'd recently shot the deer he said yes...Was then told his was the only shot and 10 min past legal hours and ticketed....the officer had waited by the car 40 min. while the guy recovered ...gutted and dragged the deer out....That's dedication....lol...

    Bear Hunting

We have bear at camp in the Alfred area...I've been close but not sealed the deal bow hunting them a few days a year....we are lucky enough to have a very active honey tree next to camp...so the ppl we share a drive with and the mail and Ups guys let us know whats up with bear ...deer and turkey....always be good to the local delivery ppl ....I use scent and do a burn which is great because they are usually in the swampy/hill area behind us or in the white pine grove next to us....which is where the wind carries..we also have a lrg #... hundreds of wild apples that grow on the place along with very thick cover of buck thorn...patches of skunk cabbage wht and red oak and very nice hickory
