  1. that's a good point. i forgot but now i remember hearing about some there. aint that the truth! http://www.fieldandstream.com/blogs/field-notes/2013/06/video-bear-climbs-tree-smell-hunter that's a wild story!
  2. still dropping at my place due to rains and full branches. nutty compared to last year.
  3. Wife has an 09 Rav4 v6 limited 4x4 w/ 62k and I also have a 2003 silverado ls extended cab 4x4 w/ 120k. Pictured are an 05 R6 w/ 8k and 09 Pontiac G8 w/ 31k. Both have work done. The golden retriever is stock
  4. that's an out of season kill. not the same. I realize this. My question is why does it matter. Because I'd like to know if there is no open season in the central and western areas of the state simply because there have been no bear here, or is it because they're trying to grow their numbers. I'm not advocating that I do or would go through with it. As far as I know there are none in wayne or tully anyhow. This is simply a hypothetical case. I do have a camp in the dacks, I can easily go up there and shoot one. The question is what would happen down south if YOU saw one.
  5. my brief experience in plotting has learned me one thing. Kill the shit out of everything first. roundup. rake/till, wait a week and repeat.
  6. that's a freaking nice buck man. i've never done it, but I cant imagine a field tip not killing a rabbit.
  7. one thing that corn does that soy doesn't is provide cover. Smart mature bucks will use it to bed, eat and just hang out in. Can't really do that with soy. Saves a lot of deer if they wait to cut it till late like they have around me the past few years
  8. i think my peas are doing better than anything i planted in my beds.
  9. why would we laugh? I own 3 canoes and 2 kayaks. man power transportation is awesome and helps you get quietly to some real cool spots.
  10. i wouldn't say it's just the equipment that has made it "easier". Television, specificially cable and the net allow us to share tips, tricks and tactics much easier. The invention of better scents, mock scrape, and of course better cammo and scent masking/blocking clothing and sprays all play a role. I'm 29 and have only ever hunted with my mathews switchback out of hang on treestands. I have only ever hunted with scent blocker and reatltree or mossy oak cammo. My family has been hunting for generations and a lot of the older photos show them in black face paint and the lumberjack jackets or tiger stripe army camo. I think there's just a better understanding of how to hunt deer. Sure native americans have known for years about scrapes and rubs and beds. But how well did the general hunter know about these and how to utilize them? Lets not forget about the whole new movement of food plots. The sport itself has grown, not just he archery season. My grandfather passed this spring at 81. Still had iron sights on his browning.
  11. yeah i thought it was around a grand. That's crazy. I might make a trip some year to my camp up by Racquet. At the risk of sound unethical, would it really matter if you shot a bear in a county without a season? what's the consensus on this? If the DEC is trying to grow their numbers in other areas then I wouldn't do that, but I'm not sure that's the case.
  12. I ponder that as well. Being born into the compound era I never used a recurve, I realize I could if I wanted. Honestly I find bowhunting challenging enough though. There are hours of practice needed just to master the weapon, let alone the hours and hours in the woods learning when to draw, to calm your nerves and hunting in such a way to get the deer closer than you would with a gun. A recurve I believe only adds time to the mastering of the weapon and also decreasing your effective distance, but the mechanics of actually shooting and the way you hunt does not change as much. It's certainly on my bucket list to take a deer, even if it's a doe with a recurve. zero difference? What sort of muzzleloader and shotgun do you hunt with? I realize they're certainly not the civil war era guns, but you also certainly cant flail away like a shotgun hunter that I hear every opening day. but nothing stops those gun hunters from picking up a bow and learning how to hunt with it. And stats show they are. bowhunting numbers have been growing for years in NY and many other states. The stats have been published and posted here dozens of times. I have no issues with more hunters joining the ranks as long as they embrace some of the unwritten rules of the sport. If not, we as bowhunters will start to suffer the same stereotype as the cig smoking pumpkin at the gas station buying a 30 pack for deer camp associated with opening weekend of gun. I have no problem with this hunter either, but I'd rather they help maintain the archery season as I know it. And honestly I believe those that give up on archery because it's "too hard" are exactly that individual. Make it easier for me please! I want to go into the woods hungover and smelling like a bar room stall and shoot a deer!
  13. did you get a rug made? wondering what that costs generally.
  14. better not let Paula or Grow see that. This is a family forum
  15. this is hilarious to me. I do lift as well, but I can't help but picture you as the typical LI kid I went to college with. On the way home did you pick up some hair gel? Did your dad by you a wrx, acura or 3 series?
  16. wow left yesterday at 16 and it's on 24 now? not going to read all that. However I do find it hilarious the "city folks" think they can insult a country way of living on a hunting site. Say all you want, there are pros and cons to both styles of living, but if it's hunting you want, you certainly can't do that in a city. Shoot, you cant even carry a gun in the city.
  17. So I know a few people seeing bear around Rochester, Syracuse and Buffalo. I believe there is no season in these areas, but I believe it's because generally there are no bear here. Does this mean even with a tag you cannot take a bear? I would assume the answer is that you cannot. But just curious. I would imagine bears making a comeback in the area wouldn't exactly be welcome by everyone and if one walked by the stand and it WAS legal, would you take it?
  18. someone with 6 posts is not going to influence my decision to get off this SITE. I will just stop responding to your posts. Just wanted to give you a heads up as to why I'm ignoring you and to halt your "see he didn't answer my question because he knows I'm right" post.
  19. a ton? really? But to say "a ton" is something I'd have to disagree with. we can never prove eachother wrong because there is no study or criteria of what constitutes "practice" to prove either side. New hunters need more of it than older. Bowhunting is not something I know many people enter into half assed.
  20. it's all personal preference. many don't like thin crust. Someone from chicago would laugh at NYC pizza. They're some homers on this site and that's fine. I actually like thin crust and there's a place called Sals on main street near UB in buffalo that makes an awesome thin crust after a night of drinking, but I had friends who preferred the other place that had more toppings and thicker crust. to each his own.
  21. the thing about the pay cut is the cost of living is orders of magnitude less. check out this site http://www.bankrate.com/calculators/savings/moving-cost-of-living-calculator.aspx if i move from Rochester to NYC my paycheck almost doubles and my housing price quadruples. COL increase in general is 76%
  22. and what's interesting is that there are some good places throughout the NE. Even if they're not thin crust. But the farther away you get the worse it gets. I was in TX on business once and the local guy took me to the best pizza joint in the state. It was horrible.
  23. ugh. walking back by more orchard last night and my golden found a fawn bedded down. Dumb ass started chasing him and the poor thing was bleating like crazy. Stupid dog. Then I see either a big fox or a small yote cross my backyard this morning. Very unusual. And not very cool.
  24. the comment was not that upstate has worse food, but that we have no good food. That's just plain not true. There are world famous and very notable places from Syracuse to buffalo. If you're looking for world class cuisine in the mountains, you're not going to find it. Take a small little place like Chef's in Buffalo for example. Good prices, great food, famous sauce and I can wear jeans or go on my lunch break. No calling a month in advance or having to "be someone" to get a table. If that appeals to you, that's fine. I guess that's why you live in the city and I don't.
  25. nuts to the high maintenance b!tches from downstate. Why anyone would want to play games on into their late 20's and 30's and feel the need to wine and dine someone who may only be with you for your money is beyond me. But continue on your role of insulting our woman and food Biz. You just don't know when to quit. amen oh man, say what you want. I prefer a slice I can fold anyday of the week over more traditional or deep dish.
