what's crazy is MSU deer lab did a study to see if you could buy a bunch of Four Seasons freakishly big whitetails and release them into the wild to grow big bucks in the free range herd. even did a simulation so show (if you if could ever afford it) to replace 50% of the buck herd with these deer. it gave you an average increase of 12 inches in antlers after 10 years but imagine the cost of buying say 1,000 of these farmed deer?! hahaha... it's crazy to think how much negligible stress and optimum year round nutrition and age can allow genetics to express their full potential when inside a fence.

in a free range herd they've even said it takes multiple years/generations of quality food for for genetic expression. not something you'd want to do but I wonder what would happen if you fed them mediocre food typical to what a free range deer would see. I bet they'd still be massive but nothing close to what they would be otherwise.

A little research would show you many, many years back it very well was high fence deer released into the wilds of Ohio to save that herd.  One would say Ohio stands above Ny in the whitetail world.  Mediocre food here ( Behind Fence)is pretty much what my deer get outside the fence. !8% Pellet and Clover,Alfalfa in every bite.  The genetics and the lack of stress is all it takes behind fence or in the wilds. Our 1000 acres of wild has produced bigger deer then most properties in our local area because of those same two things although we have some genetics its more age and lack of stress.

Current tracks and trails thru the snow

Be careful of that. Winter yarding stick close to food source.  Check out the big picture of the properties around it that could continue to feed deer to your woods.  Lots of $$ for sure but those 3 corn fields would scare me the most. Two fields and a block of bigger woods would be sweet but one on 3 sides could be dicey.   Could also be just fine, Maybe goose hunting is not big around there. Good Luck!

It’s about 20 acres , surrounded in three sides by huge corn fields .. nice woods , easy walking ..

Open of where you could build a house/ cabin

    The guy wants 155k ...

Tons of deer sign but man that seems high .. Fingerlakes region

Ton of deer sign now or from deer past?  if others pound those corn fields will you still have deer?  Duck and goose hunters could be your worst nightmare banging them fields every day???

No, I do not see that as Trump's ultimate goal. And I see pretty good.

And I think Trump has done a good job, better than I expected 4 years ago to be honest.

Some military leaders dislike him but maybe because he has been cautious with sending troops in. His action with them have showed he cares . I do not know anyone who served who dislikes Trump but then they were not military leaders.

The virus he has handled within his constitutional rights.  I know you don't agree, but you really don't know the constitution well as shown above so we can leave it there.

The protesting as it is called is nothing more than riots and looting. It is really too bad. All the protesting is doing is creating more division. I wish Trump would shut it down but he constitutionally can not. State rights and all.

The economy is doing pretty good still. I work in a service industry,  and also own my own business.  I can not keep up, along with everyone I know. Even with a "pandemic " the economy is doing better than 4 years ago. The inflated unemployment numbers are sadly a direct reflection of political games being played because of the state government restrictions. The virus is being used for politics because of the upcoming election.

I just dont see how anyone cote vote and support the thoughts the Dem.s are offering.  My God can you see that world if he got in? Trump might not be the best for the job but he is no doubt the best out of the choices we have.

Wtf. I hunt Putnam County (it’s a small County). I have least pics ever on trail cam. Hope this isn’t the reason why. Do I start looking for dead bodies?

I heard there were only 2 cases found.  If you have water around that's where you will find them. midge bites and causes massive fever and they head for water to cool off and there they float.

Not sure about antlered ones, but this was my biggest button since joining forum anyhow.  PA chart says field dressed nearly 100 pounds and about 50 pounds edible meat.  That was in 2018, and we just finished the last vacuum-sealed roast.   That sure was some fine quality eating, which I always try and save for special occasions.

    Ya That's what he meant!

  9. No airedale, the issue is on one side of this discussion is a single persons anecdotal evidence. On the other side you have research study after research study. So I guess you're right, you can lead a horse to water.
Here's another new one for you. Gosh this science stuff is hard.

But the research did show that there were declines in some small local areas? Which proves anything is possible. I know in our area at one time it was going backwards with numerous packs but after a war for a few years they are back to being just another mouth to feed in nature and the wildlife has came back to good numbers. When one see’s more dogs than other wildlife there are to many dogs.

  10. It was the number 1 food in this study

Yeah I’m sure it is the Whitetails are the top food in any area that has Whitetails but I would guess our line would be a pretty steady line for most of our year with us having long hunting seasons and long winters. Prob start dropping in July until September and then start leveling off again.

  11. Would like to see a real updated study done in an area say like ours that have a real four season years. I would bet they would dispute this study a lot. Of course our hunting season being long would put deer on their table for many months because of poor hunters but I would bet deer would be a very steady line across the study in areas that have real winter’s.

  12. Why don't you guys start a Long Island chapter of the He-Man Coyote Haters Club?

Maybe when you start paying the taxes on people’s land the they bought for their hunting enjoyment. Not the Vermin’s!! You do know that some of us actually hunt right? You can enjoy feeding the puppies on your property to cause problems for other hunters in your area and some of us can enjoy blowing them same puppies sky high. It’s all good!

  13. I take the words of some smart people... In other states of course.. They say they want you to carry because they can’t say a cop will be there to protect you. Hopefully it will never be needed and a whole bunch of people are safer at the moment with me around wherever that may be at that time Me or mine will never be a sheep in line waiting our turn to see the Wolf. Our permits are unrestricted so it’s around most of the time.

  14. "HE did know that actually." And we could've gotten there if you'd have civilly answered my questions instead of childish name calling. Protecting livestock is not the argument at hand, and yes I'm fine with that. Why wouldn't I be?

Yes in some cases it is. My neighbor lost 14 fallow deer in one weekend. Ate part of one and just killed the rest. His land bordered our’s. Me having them in my backyard after my dog without fear. Me having some of the best deer and turkey hunting along with some pretty great small game all but wiped out! Remember they do not have to kill your deer to ruin your property? Just the mere running them non stop will take care of that. On top of that to have them run along pens chasing animals on the inside running them against the fences trying to put distance between them. So yes all out war was put on and will continue as needed to protect livestock and my property for it to continue to supply the needs I bought it for. I have no problem being called a poacher or any other words some might want to come up with. Until someone pays my taxes or replaces anything I may lose because of their useless Vermin they will continue to be destroyed as needed. Also will have no problem accepting anything law wise that might arise from my actions. But will say it again.... Most will never see a true Vermin problem. If you can sit in your yard and listen to packs talk to each other in 6 different directions and see more dogs than any other form of wildlife on your property you may have a problem starting, If not already.

  15. I didn't read anyone say that hunting for coyotes should be stopped.  All some of us are saying is that they will never be wiped out no matter what some of the "experts" here think.  Add to this that there are less hunters out there every year even for the popular game animals like deer and turkey and people have less time to devote to hunting in general so does anyone realistically think that these coyote contests or the relatively few who do hunt coyotes on their own will ever put a significant hurting on them??  I have mighty little confidence that they will.  This pretty much sums up my thoughts on this subject.

True That. And right or wrong, Anyone that really has a Vermin issue and are not will to take the law into their own hands be it right or wrong will never even scratch the surface of the problem. Our whole problem started prob 8 years ago when a piss poor farmer had cows... That he did not care for..And Lost, let them lay dead in the fields only to have 3-4 yotes out at them during mid day at times. Different family groups moved into the area at made dens. We had 4 dens on our property at one time. Years of all out war 24-7 all year and running dogs every winter around the local area had all but taken them out. The only time you will really take out the problem is when you take out the den. The young are history and the adults are taken out during the year. But again very few will ever see a real Vermin problem but will know when you do. Your hunting property will no longer be YOUR hunting property.

  16. Aw-w-w-w-w........Look at how the big, bad, evil, hunters want to shoot all those cute little wild puppy-dogs. How terrible. You know if coyotes looked like opossums, nobody would say a word. But they look too much like our family pets, and the human mind melts into a puddle of goo.
Perhaps when the next epidemic of rabies, distemper, or mange comes along, that method of control will be much more easy to accept. Those kinds of things are the alternative way of population control when it comes to coyotes. I guess not too many people think about the fact that other than man, coyotes are pretty much uncontrolled at the top of the food chain here in NYS and many other states. Perhaps reading up on the symptoms of some of these canine diseases would put hunting in a much better light. None of them are a very nice way to go when compared to a bullet.

Best part is I would bet the farm that these comments come from guys that do not even hunt the animal and have no actual experience but read from 30 year old science. Most will never see a true Vermin problem.

  17. I think the Big Problem with Coyotes happen when they start showing up in Daytime - like on the outskirts of a Little League Baseball Game or close to your backyard waiting for the Cat to be let out.

Lol. Or have 3 of them in your backyard with your Lab pinned up against your sliding glass door scratching to get back in the house. Like I said, Most do not know what a true Vermin problem really is. A few pic’s of then killing a fawn or two or taking down a deer in winter is enough to piss you off and want to kill them but that’s not a Vermin problem.
