Getting there a bit early to acclimate to elevation is a wise move....Everybody reacts differently to altitude...I have hunted up to about 12,000 feet, and I see no big difference until I get to about 10.000.. However, one of my hunting buddies sees a BIG difference when he reaches about 8,000... Also, keep up your workouts..The better shape you are in the better hunt you will have.. New Mexico is a great state to hunt elk in...The terrain in most places is not nearly as extreme as it is in many parts of Colorado, Idaho, and several other mountain states, and the elk hunting is wonderful...What area are you hunting ?

I'd keep the Jap as is....THAT round is a little different, too... And you said it is very accurate... You might check around on the gun auctions and find a good price on a Whelen... I was in the market for one for a period of time...I wanted something to replace my abusive .338 Win Mag as my " hunting anything in grizzly country" rifle... Then I read up on the 9.3 x 62 and decided to go that route instead...I got a CZ 550 American for an excellent price and never looked back...Fine, walnut stocked high lustre blue rifle, and it shoots tiny little groups with 250 grain Barnes TSX....

You may have mentioned that in some of your posts...Somehow I had it in my old melon head that your camp was that area... Shucks...Hector....Howard...They're both male names...Hehehe...
-
Sorry 'bout that FL.. Good thing I didn't come looking for you p the east side of Seneca Lake...Hehehe...
-
My idea of a good winter hike is to walk about 50 yards into a patch of thick cover and listen to a beagle howl, hoping that a rabbit might come by me within range ( or not)……….
-
Keuka ? Isn't your place around Hector ?
-
Yeah that's a big pile of scat underneath it..Probably the bear has been using it... Hey BOO- BOO... Ya wanna pass the CHARMIN ??...
-
Hmmmmmmm… Looks like somewhere near Seneca lake...

Philo....One of my best squirrel spots is about a 200 yard walk on a level woods road... << Hint. Hint>>... -

All this hunting talk has me thinking...I still have a few squirrels left from last year ( frozen in water, of course).. I better thaw some out and cook 'em up, so I'll have room for THIS year's harvest.... -
Winchester Model 70 280 rem
Pygmy replied to Savagehunter's topic in Hunting Items For Sale and Trade
It is the M70 Featherweight...Very nice rifle...It bears the PYGMY STAMP OF APPROVAL... It is a steal at that price, especially with the scope.. If somebody does not scoop it up they are missing a very good deal... I already HAVE a M70 in .280 , a laminate stock push feed Lightweight, and it has killed medium and big game all over this continent... -
Back in the days before good monometal bullets like the Barnes X, a .35 Whelen did not have much advantage over the 30-06 with 200 grain bullets...It earned it's reputation as a good large and medium game killer with 225 and ( especially) 250 grain bullets.. However with the Barnes you can drop down in bullet weight and still achieve similar terminal performance to a heavier bullet, plus flatten your trajectory a bit.. Also, I like to push the Barnes as fast as I can and still maintain good hunting accuracy, to help insure expansion...If I were hunting deer with a .35 Whelen, I would definitely consider the 200 Barnes TTSX a good candidate...

I'm looking forward to SQUIRREL season, just to get out and shoot something that is good to eat.. As far as deer go, I could give a hoot about shooting a trophy....I have sold and given away many of my trophies... I still want to go out and shoot a deer or two for the freezer, though. I am spending tomorrow discing up a couple of my fall food plots...I'll be tickled pink to shoot a doe or perhaps a raghorn buck over them this fall.. -
Many years ago, when I was a mere wisp of a lad, a neighbor boy and I were out behind my Dad's barn with our BB guns, looking for prospective targets... We spotted a yellow jacket nest and decided it would be a good idea to shoot at it.. We learned VERY quickly that it was NOT such a good idea...

Come on Jeff...! If you make it. I'll make it...Even if I have to break my poor sister's heart.... Poor destitute soul is married to a Sullivan Park PHD...……..

The pot of gold was just to the left of the cat, who was homing in on the fisher, who was hoping to have one of Jerry's chickens for dinner...

Wild Berry Bushes
Pygmy replied to landtracdeerhunter's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
For years before I moved into town, I used to take almost daily hikes on the back roads, farm roads and woods roads near my home...I always looked forward to the berry season and would eat handfuls of them on each walk.. I especially like the blackberries... -
Colorado is a beautiful state...I have been fortunate enough to hunt ( and fish) out there several times.. Just steer clear of those California libtards….Lots of them out there, especially since they relaxed the wacky weed laws...

Mine is the same model except it is blue and says " Bank of Boulder" on the side with the Victorinox cross...
-
I remember that incident... Poor Howard had no idea he had said anything wrong....Hehehe...
-
I got my Victorinox as a promo gift from The Bank of Boulder about forty years ago...It has accompanied me on several remote wilderness trips and I still keep it handy at the house and use it often...Excellent, compact , versatile tool...

A sheep grand slam is to take a ram of each of the 4 North American subspecies of wild sheep, Rocky Mountain Bighorn, Desert Bighorn, Stone Sheep and Dall Sheep.. Now the " Amish Grand Slam" is something different...Can't give you the details, but I think the main equipment requirement is a pair of knee high boots.... Jenny loves all animals ?? I'll bet she'd REALLY like ME <<smile>>…...
