  1. Nice buck, Young Feller.. CONGRATS..!!..
  2. Come on up, crappy.. I'm about ready to throw some big, fat lambchops on the grill... WOOPS !! You have a 5 hour drive...Sorry about that..They'll be gone before you get here...
  3. I have killed some deer on turkey day..Killed my first T-Day buck on Thanksgiving morning, 1968... Since I have retired, I don't need to hunt every day anymore... Considering the weather report, I think I will float a few icecubes in some amber colored liquid and sit back on the couch... Perhaps the weather will be better on Saturday...Or Sunday.....
  4. ......" Passive aggressive"..... Isn't that an OXYMORON ?....<<passive non-aggressive SMILE>>....
  5. Down here in southern Steuben along the Pennsyltucky border, we got perhaps 2 inches of soggy wet stuff... It was relatively easy to clean my sidewalks just pushing a shovel like a snow plow.
  6. Geez, Larry...I think you shot somebody's horse...<<grin>>... The contest at our local (Campbell) legion has always been for heaviest deer..A big doe could win it.... I can't remember whether they call it a Big Buck Contest or a Big Deer Contest. I'll let you know next time I stop by for happy hour.. Good chance that will be tomorrow...<<smile>>...
  7. Yeah, Lawdwaz...Dont'cha hate when you get in the woods and realize that you forgot your ENTRENCHING TOOL ? I HATE when that happens....
  8. Wait a minute...Let me get a beer and some popcorn....<<grin>>...
  9. There are many types of venison other than whitetail. I have never eaten it, but have heard that fallow deer provide the very best venison. I talked to a fellow that had experience with raising fallow deer for meat, and he told me that they took great pains to make sure that the deer were unalarmed and relaxed when they stunned/killed them. If they were upset the adrenaline would negatively affect the flavor of the meat.
  10. Being only SEMI computer literate, I'm often not aware of some of the nuances of this medium. Perhaps pig latin would be better..I understand that. Mike Rossi says " IX-nay on the AP-cray in the OODS-way "... Its IME-tay for my AP-nay....<<grin>>.....
  11. A whine forum is a good idea, but it wouldn't do ME any good, because NOBODY ever listens to MEEEEEE !! WAAAAH !
  12. Hmmm..I just looked at my reply to your post and didn't see anything in bold print. Perhaps you take yourself too seriously. What is there to reconcile ? I think most of the readers here would realize that I was just making a joke, especially considering the content of many of my previous posts.
  13. That's what I thought...Beautiful buck whether he dressed 140 or 200...Good job, young feller..
  14. Beautiful buck, Wood....CONGRATS !! 180 according to your brother...? Did your brother put him on a scale , or was that just his EYEBALL weight ? Just wondering...<<grin>>...
  15. I'm with you on this, Belo, and I'm no cherry...I have witnessed/ participated in finishing off deer ( and an elk) with knives, spears and clubs... It is a good way to get yourself injured real badly for no good reason. MR. 12 gauge is a much safer option, illegal or not.
  16. I am surprised that powerbelts don't perform well on light game such as deer. A few years ago when I was working up a good elk load for my .50 TC Hawken, I settled on a NOEXCUSES 460 grain conical..Worked great on the one elk I shot..Perfect mushroom on a double lung shot. They kill deer well too..
  17. My Dad had a 1949 8N which I inherited.... Unfortunately it stayed with my ex wife when I left ..LOL.. However, as luck would have it, my present fiance has a 9N... I had a set of drags, a two bottom plow and a cultilator given to me and I bought a used but nearly new set of discs for it, so I planted my first food plots this year.. I read somewhere that a very high percentage of 8Ns and 9Ns are still in use despite the fact that they have not been made in years.. Both of the above tractors had been rebuilt..They are a simple engine and relatively easy to rebuild. They are also fairly easy to work on...I am NOT a mechanic, but even I can do most of the repairs/maintenance by myself.
  18. Congrats on your piggies ! An old fellow who lived near here used to come into one of the local bars on Saturday night with a duck. He would sell raffle tickets for the duck at $1 apiece..After he had sold around 20 tickets, he'd draw the number. After that he would offer the winner $10 to buy the duck back...The winner, looking at having turned his $1 into $10, would usually sell the duck back to the guy who had raffled it. After that, the guy had $10 to drink on ( you could buy a draft beer for 15 cents) and he still had the duck to bring back and raffle off again next week.
  19. You've piqued my interest, Shawn.. What guns require setting the zero shooting offhand ?
  20. Handloaded, it is a fine all around chambering, Doe. Is your Dad's rifle a commercial model or a military one ? If it's military, is it orignal or sporterized..?... We rifle loonies need DETAILS..<<grin>>...
  21. Geez, Larry, that pistol looks familiar. When I started hunting nearly everyone I knew smoked, including me. Never seemed to be an issue..Deer still somehow managed to get killed despite the fact that all of those hunters were puffing away.I remember having to put a Marlboro down a time or two to shoot a deer. I quit smoking in 1980, but I still dip a little Skoal now and again...

    Mt. Morris

Hmmmm..He'd have been a NICE one next year...
  23. It depends on what ammo you are using. For liability reasons due to the fact that some older military ( or commercial) 8 MM's might not be safe with high pressure modern ammo, domestic manufacturers have always loaded the ammo to lower chamber pressures, making the 8x 57 ballistically similar to the 30-30 or 32 Win Special, which are basically 150-200 yard ( max) rounds.. However, the 8 x 57 , loaded to it's potential, as it is loaded in Europe, is a much more powerful chambering, in the same class as the 30-06, making it capable of cleanly taking game at ranges of 350 yards or a bit farther.
  24. Highly frangible varmint style bullets at high velocity might disintegrate when hitting a sapling, but controlled expansion jacketed or monolithic bullets designed for hunting big game will not.. They might deform or deflect, but they won't disintegrate unless they hit something substantial, like the ground. I think you are safe taking any shot with the rifle that you would take with your shotgun, without having to worry about the bullets vaporizing from hitting a few twigs or a sapling. The main issue is, ANY projectile that is shot through brush may deflect and not hit your intended target.
  25. Aaron....Congrats on your first deer and GOOD JOB on the recovery...Enjoy your well earned venison...
