Sounds like work is good; need to gather up some moose money.

I want your job; all you do is go out to lunch! I spent a good part of the day outdoors......blowing snow and cold, oh boy. Now if there was something to shoot, wouldn't have been as bad.
  3. I like these threads, like dogs way more than people.....good looking pups posted. Rescue, Pit-Lab cross- female; Injakazi (Inja for short, Zulu name)
  4. For the knife making stuff I went here for supplies; http://www.knifemaking.com/default.asp You Tube has tons of videos; Lots of videos on different steels to chose, I've started with O1 tool steel but there are many choices. I felt the O1 was a good start with strait forward heat treating and good working edge. I found this to be helpful for hardening and made the coffee can/propane torch furnace that you can find on youtube; For woodworking stuff Warren Cutlery has 2 shops, one is kitchen/chef supplies on 9 and woodworking is on 9G. Jim Zitz is owner and very helpful especially on stuff like how to sharpen.....I've bought this starter carving kit as a gift for several folks over the years; https://www.warrencutlery.com/product-info.php?pid173.html
  5. I like the combo idea myself. During WW 2 around 1942, the German Luftwaffe issued 12 x 12 x 9.3x74r drillings to pilots as a survival rifle. Hermann Goring (head of Luftwaffe) was an avid shooter/hunter and was responsible for having Sauer build around 2600 of them; and they came in a nifty breakdown case with ammo and supplies. I won an auction some years ago for a complete unit with unopened ammo and all the kit; but never took possession as the auction house messed up and a blind buyer's bid wasn't entered. They asked me if I would sell to him at a tidy profit and I jumped at the chance. Just the guns and the kits still come up for sale from time to time.
  6. If you have any interest in wood carving or knife making; I can hook you up with enough wood to start off. Blade blanks are cheap and you can get a few bucks selling to buy a few more; just some basic tools required and little space. In Rhinebeck is a very good place to get carving tools and info; Warren Tool; basic starter set and some sandpaper all thats needed. How to books, carving club how too's and such. My dad was layed up for a spell when I was a youngster and he could pass the time on a chair, and he fiddled around carving for a while.
  7. Needed to get better at off hand for a hunt in October and shot a pile of 22 at 2" steel targets at ranges of 25 to 75 yds during the summer. 5 to 20 shots a day and 5 as fast as possible reloading and hitting a 50 yard target. (1.5-5 power scope at 1.5 both eyes open) I'll be curious to your results as we are opposite of physical build. I tend to really pull a gun tight to shoulder to roll with the shot as I'm shooting typical heavier kickers (30 magnums and in this case 375HH and 458 win mag). Wrap my sling into my support arm and choke up on my grip as I like a muzzle heavy feel, keep my weight forward on front foot to allow for recoil. Equipment wise my triggers are light and crisp which I think makes off hand easier; use the tip of finger on trigger. Shot the most ever offhand on hunt, and made a nice 150yd snap shot at a smaller animal with confidence.
  8. One of the original owners of Sitka sold to WL Gore some years ago and made a bundle....2010 or 11(?) Went on to start another company specializing in light weight mountain hunting gear called KUIU (koo-you) (Both are places in Alaska) Biggest knock on KUIU was they moved all production to China, have a very "athletic" fit, and in my case un able to fill an order timely. Waited 7 months for some pants that I finally gave up on. Supposedly supply chain is better these days. If looking for good deals on Sitka, follow Linton Outdoors as they buy up the prior years models and offer some good deals if you have something in mind; have a few pieces that are some of my favorites bought there over the years.
  9. So I haven't done mine so I went to the site..... Entered data for 3 handguns, started at 5:13 and was done in 10 minutes by the clock and printed a receipt. One suggestion is they have a "save for later" feature; may want to do that and then re enter the system to continue, that should give a fresh clock to start with for the next entry period. I'll say I'm glad its not for rifles or I'd be there for a spell.
  10. welcome to the board..... I've had the discussion both in public and private with a fellow on another forum about posting pics and his opinion is that they are not worth any benefit, and I have always taken the opposite stance. Its taken a couple of years but I'm now of the opinion he is correct. As much as I enjoy others pics, and have posted a few of my own; between the snipes by other hunters and anti's using them as propaganda; they should be kept private and only shared with very trusted friends.
  11. Insane numbers now for some hunts.....They'll sell quota out between DSC and SCI shows. Had a very nice offer in 2015 but was headed to New Zealand and couldn't re arrange dates. Couple cancellations came up this year for very good discounts, it'll be interesting to see if those even make to my email this year.
  12. Tru oil, first coat thinned a bit with some naphtha or mineral spirts works good. Easy to add another coat to cover use. Can rub out to any sheen later when dry. Theres some pics of some Turkish Walnut a few threads down in this section I started.
  13. That would actually be a very interesting number and one I have never seen, under fence vs open in total, for South Africa and Namibia I would think it wouldn't be insignificant. Tanzania,Mozambique,CAR ,Cameroon,Ethiopia,Uganda,Benin,Guinea,Mauritius, some areas in Morocco and Senegal....and add in all the aforementioned countries in my prior post significant open area in Zimbabwe, Zambia,Namibia......there is a BUNCH of unfenced hunting around. Interesting enough it costs roughly 2X in day rate to hunt a free ranging wild area that has some of the big 5 roaming for plains game vs. the smaller fenced areas and 3x to hunt DG in "wild" places. No doubt the with ability to hunt free range there is a economic model of supply and demand, add in the quota limitations, and operating costs are significantly higher for just basic supplies. So with day rates in Tanzania closing in on $2k a day; I'd say a good portion of "affordable" hunting could be under fence.
  14. Africa is a big place.....But high fence is very common in South Africa, somewhat common in Namibia (the 2 countries that do many plains game hunts) and there are a few places in Zimbabwe, Botswana, and now Zambia. You are correct in most are 3-8000 acres for a smaller size ranch; I'd guess the bulk are in the 8-20,000 range and a few go upwards of 100,000 acres plus. Most plains game operations have natural occurring breeding and life cycles where animals can evade and escape. 3 miles by 8 miles is roughly 15,000 acres for example. Species type and management practice has most of the smaller ones doing at least some put and take hunting; where animals are often removed from over populated areas and relocated for either breeding or trophy use. Have to shop careful depending on what you want to hunt and how; fenced, low fence(like operating cattle ranch), or free range. Lion hunting especially in South Africa is often canned. Cats are raised in chain link pens and often are released drugged in a larger property around a few thousand acres. Most hunters are sold a story about animals escaping national parks or crossing the border or killing cattle. Thats the part that bugs me; sold some BS line because the property is near Kruger or up on Botswana border and some hunter thinks he's shooting a cattle killer marauder. On the opposite end are places like Save conservancy in Zimbabwe. That is technically high fence at 1 Million acres, roughly 1600 square miles; is that fair chase enough? Seems so to me and many places the fence is down for years at a time. My last hunt, covered just under 1/2 million acres for the 2 hunter in camp with no fences, but a sprinkling of villages scattered about. Left camp one day at 4am and arrived at northern boundary at 7am. On another trip stayed at a lodge on a high fence place of 20,000 acres and had a management hunt to have some fun for 10 animals when we weren't off on free ranging places to hunt some trophies I was after. In roughly 5 days of hunting I didn't kill the 10, took 7 of what could be the dumbest game species on the continent and generally speaking I'm more aggressive for shot selection than many who post on here. I don't care what anyone does with their money, and frankly I don't care if its chained to a tree; just be honest about it if you are going to tell the story.
  15. Coming in the next month actually; CNN bought the broadcast rights to a documentary called "Trophy" and is going to broadcast an edited version. Can't see them keeping the pro hunting messages contained and most neutral folks think the film is fairly balanced. I've seen clips/bits/pieces and one of the featured hunters is a frequent poster on another hunting forum I post on. His hunt for Lion is real and in a wild area; but one hunter is a real douche and shoots a Croc in an actual pen with all the stereotypical shortcomings one would expect. Couple threads on the film on AfricanHunting.com for those inclined to look.
  16. You have actually struck at the core of the issue; This is a Judge issue. The laws are there, but the prosecutors and judges simply don't see simple game law violations as serious crimes; unless injuries are involved. Oh....Just one among many; and that is a bit sad, but REALLY entertaining. Almost 30 years worth of hilarity. I watched one have a fight with himself in the wee' ours once while his car burned to the frame in front of my place. 911 operator asked me to go and check on him and as I could see he was just meandering around in the highway by the light of the flickering flames, I politely declined; having to settle an argument with a drunk with himself, not my ides of fun
  17. You'll note the special name designation I use for my location. My particular geographic area is noted for such antics.
  18. I live in Dutchess, about 200 yds to my east is a DEC officers home; the guy that lives 400 yds to my west on the exact same road shot robo deer 2 nights in a row on a stake out on one of the few pieces of state land. Poachers don't care and the fines are not stiff enough.
  19. About the best I can do Blaser wise, is my wood stocked R-93 and the right barrel, and a 2-7 light scope is 7lbs and a few ounces all up. Better than most bolt guns but not near the lightweight offerings on the market today. One of the reasons designed was for owners who had to register the frame, but could own multiple barrels(that went away). Always having the same trigger and fit/feel was another. +1 on buying a light conventional non take-down and shaving weight that way. Like the ease of travel with small gun cases, never have used the take-down ability in the field.
  20. I've shot one of these in 30-06, long stroke forward and moving optic isn't my cup of tea and I found it awkward. Not a conventional bolt action but Blasers system works for me travelling for most hunts; 30-06 and 243win;
  21. I have the predecessor Sauer 200 in 30-06 and 243 for swapping barrels. Hard to find the true take-down forearm in anything but safari versions, they all swap barrels/take-down in that sense. Discontinued for the new design 404.
  22. LOL.....that guy is on Coast to Coast when his books come out; wish they still had Art Bell around, he could do a good job on the conspiracy/UFO/bigfoot stuff.
