  1. I have been enamoured by the Tikka rifle since the first time I saw one about 4 years ago. I was looking at spending the money on a 22-250 Tikka and adding the scope until I cam acroos the model 70 I got today, otherwise I was gonna order the Tikka next week. Love the butter smooth action of the Tikka... non better.
  2. I just bought a Winchester, Model 70 22-250 with a 4X12 Simmons Prohunter scope all for $500. It is a "Coyote" model, just 7 years old and has had just 21 rounds through it the day it was sighted in 7 years ago. Not a scratch on it. Pics below.
  3. this is what I do as well... I like the resident deer to get use to them year after year
  4. I wear at least a blaze hat and generally a camo w/ orange vest. It's amazing how little orange is needed to be seen from several hundred yards away.
  5. I wear the wetlands as well.. slightly over sized so i can wear a thin poly sock and up to 2 pears of woolies. For the really cold days I wear snowmobile boots with felt liners
  6. One size over snowmobile boots w/the felt liners. Wear the boots w/o any wool socks and then add the woolies after you get on stand.
  7. I'm sorry if this has been discussed before but IYO... what is the best coyote caliber and what grain bullets?
  8. A good link to some NY State coyote hunt videos http://www.youtube.com/user/BeanHillBuckHunter
  9. We need to have this timer permanently moved to the top of the Bowhunting page. Can the Admin do this?
  10. Check out Perrys no peep. My son really like it. http://www.perrysnopeep.com/
  11. Just 286 days... 9 1/2 months and... we will be bowhunting again!!! Yahoo!!!!
  12. I use Win Mod 70. chambered in 270 weatherby mag for whitetail. I thought I'd look into a rifle for coyotes and woodchucks but could also be used for long range, late season deer hunts as well. Thought the 25.06 would be a good choice.
  13. Looking to buy a 25.06, preferably bolt action. What ya got?
  14. I have a barely used, maybe 40-50 rounds at most - Rem 742 basketweave 30.06 auto with a 4 power Weaver scope. It was used by my son in 2000 for an elk hunt and he slipped and and there a few small dings in the wood. I'm looking to trade for a 25.06 with a similar scope. No money exchanges. I can post pics and ask that you do the same after we discuss your trade.
  15. I have an older model 70 Winchester in 270 caliber that chambers a 270 Weatherby Magnum. It is an XTR Sporter probably from the 60's. Is this gun rare or scarce and what do think it's worth in good condition?
  16. Actually most does in the Southern tier, give birth to 2 deer each year... so it could be 2 bucks next year and sometimes they triplet.
  17. I would be very careful as to what you restore and how you restore as it may very well de-value the gun.
  18. IMO - I think the mature bucks are locked down with does. If your not seeing deer it's cause you haven't found the does. If you see does a buck or 2 will be with them or following not far behind.
  19. How do you think they learn to "chuck as much wood as a woodchuck could"
  20. I saw no deer and my son saw 2 spikes but overall not alot of shooting... very quiet. How bout you?
  21. It is with a heavy heart I write today. I lost my hunting buddy on March 9 of 1999 at 9:30pm... my father. Hell or high water my father would be ready and out on opening day. Opening day, 1999, at 9:30am my Dad sent me a doe followed by a 9pt 130 class buck which I killed at 35 yards away. Easy shot. I had not seen a deer prior to this all morning. My Dad was always ready for opening day SZ shotgun. He was the kind of man that would name every "watch" as he liked to call them. I call them stands but you get the point. He would be ready to go always filled with such anticipation. he had a back pack filled with every thing he may ever need... an old eagle scout and he was always prepared and he took a number of decent bucks over the years... nothing really special except a really perfectly symetrical 115 class 8 pt which was his pride. He never did get a chance to bowhunt with me as he passes away 2 years before I started to bow hunt. He died at just 72 from viral encephalitis. I thank God he never saw a nursing home. Funny thing is every year that goes by i am more like him... I carry a pack filled with shit I might need... I name all my stands and I have a 17 yo son who goes hunting with and really likes it but could give a shit about anything else. Oh... he is so much like was once. Good luck this weekend, be safe and let's not ever forget these people that gave us this gift of deer hunting. Amen to all of you.
  22. I look at opening day a little different. Throw out all you've learned from bow season and preseason scouting. Set up in a funnel where you know deer will be pushed by other hunters and just sit there all day. Bring your lunch.
