  1. Picked up this little gem today for her. She likes the fit and feel. Going to hit some targets with it tomorrow. I hope it shoots nice for her. It's a savage axis youth muddy girl 7m 08. No accutrigger but I don't think that matters for the way it will be shot. Shots should be within 100 yards.
  2. Up for a month or so.. These two are the only thing to show up. Also didn't know had yotes. Way way disappointed.
  3. "I had to take my wife to the movies. That's nothing. I had to take mine to the opera." And Al Bundy topped them all with "I had to take my wife.." Lol! It sucks sitting here instead of the woods. You guys are right.. I may need to sit this season out or cough up for an x bow.
  4. I had a walmart type tick collar on her and the vet said it's better to use the cream stuff once a month. Since this thread is going this way, anyone know how the cream or collars work? I thought they eventually killed ticks, after they were on your dog some amount of time. I didn't think it repelled them immediately. If so, this cream is not working at all. Anyone know??
  5. I got to my bow last night at midnight. Tried pulling it and no way it was happening. Slept in this AM and sat in the popup with wife this evening. Two flatheads came by, one walked under my tree stand! Nice sized deer. Wife took a shot, she missed the mark. Oh well. Next time. Hopefully in a few weeks I'll be better. This is not an awful shoulder issue. I hate having to get a muzzleloader tag for Cross bow.
  6. My lab was out around camp for a short time with me getting the water going. Came back in and noticed dark spot.. Tick. Checked her over real good and pulled of at least 10 ticks. None dug in, all crawling around. Found two crawling on me, one on the wife. Had a small itch on my backside a few hours later..... Another tick. Have not had them this thick before. Be careful everyone. Seems to me thicker than usual right now.
  7. I bought my wife a pop up blind. She likes to sit in it, watch movies on her phone, nap. I think she might actually look out the window once in a while. Its great for me and she loves it. Your GF has 40 acres??? She is a keeper. Reminds me of the old joke . Personals add that read "Wanted: Woman with boat and motor for fishing. Send picture of boat and motor." I Have a bit of the same issue. I didnt put up her blind yet and we are going tomorrow. Deer really shy away from these things until they get used to them? I am not sure I should set it up or just have her sit next to a tree somewheres. She does squirm on watch pretty good, why I wanted her to be in the blind. Not sure what to do..
  8. My labrum was in good shape, a small tear. Rotator cuff in perfect shape. My issue was MASSIVE swelling and scar tissue due to vasculitis. I have no anchors, nothing to really pull out. Essentially I just got a scrape and clean. I can move my shoulder more now than I could the last 2 years. Last year I could barely pull my bow back. I originally started down the surgery trail in January. Due to lots of BS, it took me til Sept to get scheduled. I was in a a sling for less than a week, doctors orders. Also docs ordrers to move my arm/shoulder day after surgery. He wanted me moving breaking up scar tissue. Maybe it is a bit early though.
  9. Sept 8th had surgery. Not a fun surgery but I am healing up. I drew back my wifes bow and held it for a while a few nights ago. I did it.. Was farking painful but I did it. Its set to 35lb draw. My bow is at hunting camp and Ill be there late tonight. See if I can draw it back. Im going to have to screw with the draw weight. Say a prayer for me. Thats all I need. Sitting in stand and have a monster come up and not able to draw my bow.
  10. So.. dogs age right now is 9 weeks and 2 days. I keep her off leash 90% of the time. SHe follows and stays close most times, but not 100%. This is normal for a 9 week old? Im going to get the 10 minute retriever here soon. Ill have her at the water memorial day weekend and let her explore to her comfort level. I do have a .22 around somewhere and can shoot that a ways away from her. Specific questions.. 1) She does not come to me consistently when called. I think this is very important. WHat types of exercises or training methods can I do to make her consistent? Thanks!
  11. Just found the thread. Thanks.
  12. You gotta be ******* me.. This makes my hunting oh sooooooo much better. I better look closer at the regs. Man oh man. Best news I had in good long time.
  13. Got a new lab pup two weeks ago and am in process of training her. What a handful. She already does some retrieving of her toys. She does sit most times, stay when she is not wound up, and down when I give her food and once in a while without food. Not bad for two weeks I dont think. SHe is not coming to me consistently though yet. She has master retriever titles in her parents/grandparents. Seems like great potential for a hunting dog. I am real happy. Plus she is just a fine little puppy. Anyone have books or recomendations for training her?? Also.. when to teach her to swim? How many months old is recommended??
  14. Finally checked and heard the news!! Excellent. Timing could not be any better as my shoulder is pretty much screwed. So my question and if this got covered before sorry point me to the thread. .." cannot be discharged within 250ft of a home..." Does this mean I can discharge xbow 251ft from a home??? I find it very very odd that legislation like this is included if the legal shooting distance did not change. Why wouldnt it say cannot discharge xbow within 500ft of home.. etc. That would be consistent with the existing shotgun and bow laws. What gives??
  15. Im actually near NYC but my stomping grounds are a bit North and East of Ithaca, Cayuga county basically. I travel to and fro quite often. Hell Ill take a laborer also..
  16. Im in the market for a puppy. A yellow or a chocolate. Any recommendations where to go???
  17. Looks pretty good for the Ruger American compact. I found a 7mm 08 on the shelf about an hour and 15 drive away (one way...) in PA. Or I found a .308 on the shelf 15 mins from where I will be Christmas eve in NY. Could get it on the way into town Tues... (Side note: I didnt really like the attitude of the guy in PA. Kept trying to hang up. Asked price, sure its compact, store hours, etc. Kept trying to get off the phone. I need to call back to make 100% sure the gun in fact was the compact in 7m 08 IF I choose that one) The more I looked the more I thought a 7mm 08 would be better choice, recoil wise. What to do... Is there lot of diff recoil wise between .308 and 7mm 08, especially in this gun? The easier choice would be the .308. I really dont want to do that to her though IF recoil is a big thing. She did shoot the thompson .308 with zero issuues but that is a much heavier gun I think. Also anyone have recommendations for a scope? Scopes and rifles are new territory for me and I am learning as I go. Thanks!!
  18. I do have a small tractor I could drive there. I may think the noise of that though would scare the deer when I park it there. Its pretty loud. Soap may work. Shirts/pants something hanging from a branch sounds easier than a full blown scarecrow. Shopping bags may work, long as they are not white I would think. WHite bags flapping around could be bad. Lots of good ideas here, simple and hopefully effective.
  19. My hunting area is small and I have several unhappy neighbors. So... we are limited on how to hunt it. The best place to be is within 100 ft of an angry neighbors place. We have tried to talk to him but that just wont work. not happening, never, period, end of story. The deer travel along a hedge that is right by his place. So I was thinking of ideas how to move deer away from his house. One idea I had was to make a scarecrow of some sort on my land near where the deer travel. The theory being that the deer will see this, smell this and move in a different direction, toward where the guns are. Anyone try something like this?
  20. Also pic I took of the deer that walked by my house during bow season. It stuck its tongue out at me. Bow was up in the treestand.. Deer was not taken with the nice pink bow, but a Thompson .308 during gun.
  21. I like to put one in the head so the neck meat stays in tact. At least put one in and make sure its not breathing anymore though.
  22. Wow.. I guess I am lucky. My wife turned into quite the huntress this year. I got shit for not getting a deer and was told I better get one next year! Last night matter of fact she cooked up some venison sausage made a great meal and reminded me she hunted it, killed it, cooked it. Im also lucky she works on my bee hives most times with me. Everyone says hah hah she got a deer and you didnt. Well yeh but I put her where I thought shed get something, not a lousy spot she wouldnt see something. Most people saying this to me didnt get a deer this year...
  23. I did think about it being more humane to take it than let it go through winter. Couldnt quite do it though. No deer farms in the area. We were coming up with all kinds of theories what this thing was. Mother hit by car or some other accident, mother left it on purpose as it knew this fawn was not quite right. WHo knows. When i first saw it, it was by itself. Next time I saw it, it had linked up with another doe and was walking with it. Then apparently the other doe and it parted ways. This made me question some deer behaviors and how deer traveled together. I dont know the answers. I find it interesting a second doe would part ways with this thing. There was also another band of 4 doe around. Seems it could easily have linked up with these but did not.
  24. Y recoil is a concern. Ireally wanted to give her my savage 111 and get a Browning to match my BPS.. but I guess I cant do that for xmas.
  25. My wife been borrowing a 308 and likes it real good. Its big for her and heavy though as its full size. So.. Santa is going to bring her one that fits her. Question is.. which one?? Should be a youth model. Anyone have suggestions for a good youth model? Im not real worried the caliber much. thinking a 308 though.
