Funny story on rates.  I had a matter that after many years of litigation finally appeared to be heading to US Supreme Court - I was sure it would get there.  My client loved me and wanted me to stay working on it, but also wanted a US Supreme Court specialist after we got past the Second Circuit Court of Appeals.   Enter Paul Clement - he is the man if you are arguing before SCOTUS.  You all might know him from the recent 2nd amendment case that he won - https://www.cnn.com/2022/06/23/politics/supreme-court-guns-second-amendment-new-york-bruen/index.html

Anyways, as I am talking to Paul about co-counseling the case with me, he says his rate is $2000/hr.  Even I was a bit shocked at that.  I was thinking $1000 maybe $1300.  We agreed to a flat fee through the petition for cert.  Good guy by the way and he left Kirkland Ellis due to the fallout from his win on the 2nd amendment case.  But yes, rates continue to rise.  And all us hourly lawyers are simply hourly workers - so we can't work 2 hour days.  Then again, we are worth every penny!  lol

It's funny, Moog.  Judge D'Agostino in NDNY is also skeptical of Mr. Clement's rates.  In 2015, she rejected his fee application of $1,100/hr and awarded him $300/hr, noting that "The non-prevailing party should not be required to pay for a limousine when a sedan could have done the job."  Osterweil v. Bartlett, 92 F.Supp.3d 14, 26-28 (NDNY 2015).

I always wondered how Mr. Clement took that one.

Mine is low again 9w.. makes no sense..  oh well. Landowner tag and a few guys have pp from last year.  Still have dec numbers way off.. but  apparently there are no deer and they have to raise population...  ill just get em with my vehicles i guess.

I always wonder how accurate the DEC numbers are.  I hunt not far from you in 9T and I am amazed at how many people in that area either don't report their harvest or shoot whatever they want regardless of whether they have a tag or not.  I can't imagine it's much different anywhere else.

  3. Why not get the 48 at that point ?

I think I'd trade my 48 for a 43x. I carry AIWB and I think the half inch shorter slide would be a little more comfortable when I sit down.

Of the things in that area I could remove a half inch from to make carrying more comfortable, I'd rather it was the gun.

Live from the office.   Just settled one of the most contentious lawsuits I ever handled between some very well heeled farmers.   My client's holdings just grew from 5300 acres to 6300 acres.   I wonder if he has a spot I can throw a stand up.  lol

You should have taken it on a contingent fee...33 and 1/3 percent of any recovered acreage.

  5. I only once got a cold foot in plain old army surplus Mickey Mouse boots and a single pair of medium weight wool blend socks.  I have worn the same pair for the last 10 years and they have held up very well.
The time I got a cold foot, was in mid December when it was about 20 degrees out, and I took water over the top on my third deep ditch crossing.
If you pull the laces tight, you can make a couple deep water crossings without taking on too much water.  My wet foot was numb by the time I made it back to the house.
Sportsman’s guide used to sell them for $ 40.  I imagine you could still find them on EBay for comparable inflation-adjusted cost.
Do you have the white or black ones? I think the white are rated for lower temperatures than the black ones.

  6. Well my son had a nice 4 pointer lined up with his Crossbow and SNAP !  His string snaps ! I called Field and Stream ( Latham Farms ) to get it Re Strung and they said " No Problem , anywhere from 1 1/2 to 2 weeks "  Flying Arrow in East Greenbush does not have their Voicemail setup , nice Business ! Anyone know of a place to get a Crossbow re-strung in 2-3 days max ? Albany area or close by ?
Back when I loved out that way I went to Brown's in Schenectady. I don't know if he is still there. He was pretty old back then and it was 10 years ago. If he is, I would highly recommend him.

  7. Up early today with my girls who apparently didn't get the message that they can sleep in on DST. Wife is leaving for a work trip to San Antonio this morning and won't be back until late Wednesday night, so I'm out for the next four days. Hopefully I can white knuckle into Wednesday with both kids and all the pets still alive. Good luck to everyone going out this morning. Looks like a perfect morning to be in the woods.

  9. I made it out for a few hours on state land.  I had planned to set up where a maple ridge dumps into a beaver swamp.  You can usually at least get some sightings if you get high enough.  While I am suiting up in the parking lot another hunter pulls in.  We chew the fat for a bit and I ask where he is hunting so we don't wind up on top of each other.  Sure enough, he is planning to sit the same swamp edge I am.

OK, change of plans.  I found a spot on the topo I wanted to check out anyway.  It's a 50 yard wide bench on a long, steep ridge.  There is a corn field up top and a turnip field at the bottom.  The ridge is mostly maple with some ash and smaller oaks, but the bench is mostly saplings, apple, ferns, grape vines, etc.  It looks like a great spot.  I set up on one end of the bench where a drainage comes up out of the turnip field and leads into the brushy bench.  I had high hopes for this spot.

4 hours later:  not a thing.  I got down around 10 to take a little walk/speed scouting trip, and saw more boot prints than deer tracks.  No droppings, no rubs, no scrapes.  No sign a deer had ever been on that ridge.

Oh wall, back to the drawing board.
