First of congrats! Seeing a deer in the big woods is an accomplishment even more so for it to be a buck. I also won't shoot small bucks. Although I will never judge or talk down on someone that does especially in the big woods. My guess is it was a young buck. Spindly spikes is a tell tale sign. If they were real heavy I would think otherwise. Body size is hard to judge when they are by them selves. When a deer sheds it's antlers it sheds the whole thing not part of it. What type of .30-06 ammunition to use for deer hunting?

Accuracy is cool. But I want a bullet that performs terminally the way I want it to way more than I want a bullet that shoots a same hole group. For example I have a Ruger 77/44 that will shoot 265gn interlocks into a ragged hole at 100yds. I shot a few deer with that bullet and it wasn't expanding at all. I tried a bunch of different bullets and 240gn xtp's that I can't get to shoot under 2" have performed phenomenally on deer and I haven't had one go more than a few feet after being hit by them. The vitals on a deer are a big target. Accuracy is fun to play around and try to achieve and most of that reload have spent a lot of money and time chasing our tails to squeeze a quarter inch out of a group. I'm sure if I did more stand hunting and field hunting "something I truly don't enjoy" I would have a different outlook on accuracy but I have changed gears and all the time I used to waste trying to tweak loads for accuracy I use that time to load stuff that I know shoots fine and functions fine and shoot a lot. They are perfect for what you described. I have a few rarely use them unless my daughter is with me or I bring my 96yr old neighbor. You miss a lot looking through the windows that my biggest negative. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

From now on I'm going to pm you my thoughts so you can write them for me. You said the same thing I was trying to say just way better. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
I'm confused, you can't drive up to knock on doors but you can to hunt? If nothing works out there is always the Adirondacks plenty of land and virtually no hunters. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I don't think I have ever thought about how a scope looks on a gun. Is that honestly a concern for you? Not trying to be smart just something I have never considered. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

1.5-6x33mm leupold vx 3 would be perfect. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

There wouldn't be a set time for them, I would imagine they are all pretty busy right now. They are volunteers that have lives and jobs and do this as a hobby. I wouldn't expect less than a 24hr response. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I own about 40 rifles and I don't own one that that shoots an 8" group. I don't own one that shoots a 4" group. There is something wrong with a modern rifle that shoots factory ammo into a 4" group. The whole find the ammo that shoots best is a complete waste of money for a very large percentage of hunters especially In NY. I would love to see the statistics but I would guess that over 90% of deer shot in NY are shot at under 100yds. Even if your rifle shoots a 3" group and you want to stay inside the 8" pie plate that give you a max effective range of 266yds. 266yds is a distance that most hunters shouldn't be shooting at because most have never practiced it. Not saying accuracy isn't important I just think it's way over emphasized. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
That's why when I get 15yds from my stand I make a loop or 2 then hang the drag somewhere. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

It truly is nice to read that there are still people out there who don't suffer from "mydeeritus." You're a stand up guy, hopefully the young fella will be hanging onto horns shortly. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I stay very calm until I have my hands on them. If it's around the house I go get the wheeler or tractor and come back not usually much emotion at all. If it's in the ADKS and it's a nice one after I can touch them I come unglued. Adrenaline mixed with relief shortly after that is when reality sets in and I pull out my Gps and realize how far back I am. When it's on the meat pole and I have a beer in my hand is when I do most of my celebrating. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

My craziest one was a SZ doe I shot about 15 years ago. She was broadside and I put a 150gn Winchester silver tip through her heart and a lung at about 15yds. I was on top of the mountain when I shot her and she ran 600yds down to the road, crossed the road went another 500yds and layer dead in the creek at the bottom. After the shot she picked her head up flicker her ears and started bounding off tail up like nothing was wrong. It was a ridiculous drag up to the road on a deer that should have been in a pile a half mile up the hill. She bled good and there was snow so I had no trouble finding her. To this day I still can't believe how far she went and how little reaction she had at the shot. I shot a bunch of deer with those bullets and never had to track one very far except her. I found myself in a stage where I thought I was way cooler because I hunted with a muzzleloader only. Like most things that flame burnt out. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

This year I bought a propane coffee pot made by Coleman for camp. It's by far the greatest investment I have ever made, get it ready at night when my alarm goes off I get up click it on and get back in bed for 10 minutes get up and have coffee it's a great invention. Yup I also work swing shift in a mill and without coffee I don't know how I would survive. Although I have to be prepared because the first cup of the morning I know what coming and it's not going to wait! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I somewhat disagree, terminal performance takes #1 priority to me. I couldn't care less if there are some ammo that might shoot 3/4" groups out of my gun. Ammo that performs inside a deer the way I need it to is what I want even if it only shoots 1 1/2" groups. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
