This is a heavily argued topic, some say that in a short barrel it does not give the burnt gasses time for full expansion and not unburnt powder. "I think I worded that properly" I can say that the only time I have ever seen unburnt powder on a shooting bench was from a 45-70 revolver. In all my short barreled rifles I have never seen any.

Any reason I shouldn't go with lighter arrows?
Buckmaster7600 replied to Core's topic in Bow Hunting
An arrow has no lift no matter what you do with your knock point! Other than killing its ke by not putting the full weight of the arrow begind your broad head. And even that at a certain distance will fix itself. -

That's not lift that's tragectory. -
The other day at work we were talking about deer rifles and I was saying how I had done this and that to all of my guns. And everyone else couldn't believe I did all that stuff to guns "ie cut barrels changed stocks, rebarrled, milled slides and what not" am I the only one who can't own anything that I have not made my personal touches to?

A 7mm-08 shoots a .284 bullets as to a 270's .277 diameter so technically a 7mm-08 would be short action 280. Although I own 270's and 280's I have never understood why we need both other than having more guns and that's NOT a bad thing even if my wife thinks so!

Misses happen but 2 in a row I would want to know why? Instead of hunting a range trip is in order.

An arrow doesn't have lift because it lacks a planing surface! -
The sad part is if the 338 was called A 330 short mag we wouldn't have this conversation.

Rebarreling one of my 99's has crossed my mind many times. There is a guy who makes barrels for 7600's in VT and he offers 338 barrels that might be my next 338.

How Many 5.5 Year Old Bucks Have You Killed? (and older)
Buckmaster7600 replied to Lawdwaz's topic in Deer Hunting
I shot one 6 year old in NC on a marine corps base and as we were all standing around weighing it an old guy says " that deer will go over 200#" long story short I bet him 20$ it wouldn't go over 150, and with its guts in him it weighed 134. Cha Ching! -

I am blessed to have a 400acre farm and 2 leases I hunt but I don't know how you guys can deal with the public land a$$ pains like that. I have to give you guys credit I think I would find a different hobby. I get mad enough having to deal with a trespasser or 2 every year! -
I have always dreamed of a 338 fed BLR to sit between my 308 and 358win. I have a AR in 338 and can't believe it never took off. I think it's biggest downfall is that upon release it was dubbed as a "brush" cartridge much like my beloved 35whelens and 358 win.

So I wonder how that 2 week kill only doe is working out

I was thinking bow only for this reason. -

What about a late doe only week or 2 after late muzzeloader with its own separate tags. Would it work? Would anyone be oppsosed to that? I don'tive in one of these areas but a trip down Christmas week could be fun? -
In my 10 years of x bow hunting I am a firm believer that faster is better with a crossbow way more so than a verticle now. There is a huge difference between 300fps and 375 or even 350. This is just my experience in having killed a lot of deer with them. "I lived in the carolinas for 10 years and in NC You buy tags by the arm length and in sc there is no tags just a daily limit.

Really? If you are searching for 5-10 fps of arrow speed turn your bow up 1 crank you will likely not notice a 2-3pound heavier draw you will gain your velocity you want and you will be able to use your arrows sounds like a win, win, win to me. -

Haha auto correct got me again! All of the things you have listed have "lift" an arrow does not. -

An elementary understanding of a few basic laws of physics says that an object without propulsion will slow at an ever increasing rate. The slower an arrow is traveling the faster it will drop. -

Buckmaster7600 replied to Core's topic in Bow Hunting
It is physically impossible for you to loose 6" at 20-30 and 6" at 30-40. The second the arrow detaches drom the string it is slowing down and the speed of which it slows down is constantly increasing. -
With the 200lb draw law the speeds on the recurves will not go up any the new ones might be more quite and lighter but they won't eb faster.
-
That's a nice Xbow, all I'm saying is that it's 50-100fps slower than comparable crossbows and othe excals due to NYS great legislation!

Buckmaster7600 replied to Core's topic in Bow Hunting
I would highly recomend shooting the heavy arrow. You loose a lot of energy shooting a light arrow. Talk to some tradition shooters those arrows are almost double what you are shooting and the reason for that is you have to have kinetic energy and with out speed the only way to get it is mass. If your worried about you fetching the shrink ones made by twister are awesome and are dyi install with some hot water. -
Muddy, the chest buckle only holds the shoulder straps from sliding off your body it's not load bearing. I have used the hss, spyder and gorilla and I think my muddy is the most comfortable and easiest to put on.

I had Excaliburs when I lived in other states but with NY's bogus draw weight laws it takes away the 1 thing crossbows have going for them "speed."

Anyone hunt with a Browning Automatic Rifle
Buckmaster7600 replied to eagle rider's topic in Rifle and Gun Hunting
I have never been able to get past the stocks on those either, but you have to have a few ugly guns to make the pretty ones stand out more. It's like my Glocks setting beside my 1911's .
