    Selfishness

I feel the seasons are fine the way they are. I also don't see a reason why crossbows can't be used for the entire archery season, they are a form of bow after all. ML's? Nope, no place for them in the archery season. They are a firearm. Leave them in the season they are allowed in currently. I don't see it as actual "selfishness". Bow hunters being "Elitist"? Maybe. But, archery is a difficult way to hunt. You have to be dedicated to it, and have the patience of a rock. Stalking or still hunting with a bow will be the toughest thing you can do. Gun hunters being selfish? Maybe. If you only gun hunt the season can be short. Especially if you only have access to the SZ. So I can see why some might have issues. After all, you can hunt with a bow during the regular season, but no guns in the bow season. I love hunting, and I love to hunt anything and everything I can take legally. Rabbit, squirrel, turkey, and next year duck. I started scouting a state forest in the SZ a few weeks ago that I used to hunt hard ever year. I planned on shooting squirrels, but I didn't. I didn't want to screw a hunt for a bow hunter that might be out there. I have to get over that. I have my license, and if I want to shoot small game during the bow season I should be able to without the thought of having a bow hunter rip into me for "ruining" their hunt. I am lucky in that I live 20 minutes from the NZ/SZ border and get to hunt both. NZ is primarily private land, and SZ is public/state land. I doubt there will ever be seasons or laws that make everyone 100% happy. I hunted with a bow only last year, and this year rifle only. Next year both. I have no want or need to use the rifle next year in my bow hunting season.
  3. Awesome shooting grow! Congrats on two deer in what? Three days? Nothing more to say but awesome and congrats.
  4. Nice shot VJP. Congrats. Growalot had a solid heart shot as well today.
  5. Now, now guys. Just because NY State is the only state that has a turd hanging off the bottom is no reason to pick on the people who choose to live on said turd. They have feelings too ya know. ________________________________________________________________ 7mm.08 shooting Hornady American Whitetail 139gr Inter Locks.
  6. I was looking, and the 835 comes in around $500, cantilever barrel around $200-$250 ( the ones I found anyway ), add a scope and you are around $1000. You can get a Browning BPS and a slug barrel for just around the same money. I would take a Browning BPS over a Remmy or Mossy any day of the week.
  7. Solid shotgun, and yes with a rifled slug barrel you are good to go. What price range are you trying to stay in/under?
  8. That's insane. This makes as much sense as cutting of your finger to get better accuracy. Do we really need to get into the major flaws of a statement like that?
  9. Congrats to your and your son Skillet! A memory that will last forever.
  10. Nope. I wouldn't. But, I am not making the rules. Though I might have a slight issue with someone suffering from bad PTSD. Extreme depression can put anyone suffering from this in a risk area/factor. I have seen Youtube videos where some folks from the south shoot each other with rubber bullets and those bean bag things ( Sorry, do not know the tech term for them ). IMHO, those people should not be allowed to own a firearm. There's certainly something not right with people who do that. Again, I am not making the rules. That's my point. What's the criteria for having a mental illness?
  11. I agree with this. I do have a question... I read a few times in different threads where people stated mental illness issues. Can someone define exactly what they mean by that? PTSD is a mental illness, and many of the soldiers coming home suffer from it ( and other Vets who served in major wars ). It can lead to severe depression, anxiety disorders, panic attacks, and other mental problems. Maybe not all cases, but we hear and read about it in the news. Also, ADD, OCD, and a host of other mental disorders are now common. So what defines in the mental illness stature?
  12. I thought you could use a crossbow during the regular gun season? Source: http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/68802.html
  13. Rio Bismuth. Expensive, but are non toxic and shoot like lead. Should have no issue in older guns with them.
  14. Sorry you didn't see any deer Red, but you made a friend, got to hunt some new land and had fun doing it. I tip my hat to GMan for extending an offer like this. Not many still do that.
  15. The best way to decide on a new gun is to go to a few local gun shops and handle a some. I say actual gun shops because they ( usually ) have a used section and you might just get a good deal on a quality gun, and at times there's a little wiggle room. Nothing wrong with buying a good used gun. Learn the hem/haw trick. A good gun dealer wants to make a sale and have repeat business. It's what keeps them in business. The only bad thing about used is when people take a combo in, some dealers then sell the gun and barrel separately to get a few more $$$'s. I would hit the shops, handle a few, ask questions, and then make a decision. Nothing beats hands on when buying a any form of gun or bow. As for the Maverick 88? I have no idea how good they are but I did handle one a few years ago and it felt flimsy to me. I would go Mossy 500 Combo or Remmy 870 Combo if you really want new and are on a budget.
  16. I think Paula summed it best in two posts. Is it really worth it to bring DEC/ECO/Law Enforcement into the mix? Like mentioned, I doubt you will get to far. A search warrant for someones freezer? For a deer? I think most judges would laugh at that one. I also think no law enforcement be it basic or wildlife officers would do a "probable cause" search.
  17. I am not sure what "weighting" the front foot is. But yes, when you bend you will more weight over the front foot as your upper body will cause that. I am not talking leaning, bending. Upper ( shoulders and arms stay the same ) and lower body stay the same. You pivot your upper body at the hip down toward the target.. Seeing I cannot show you personally, here's a vid: ( first one that popped up in search ) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bpr1cMAJeDo Your footing in a tree stand will be very different from ground shooting. That's why it's best to practice from your actual stand.
  18. Here's a few tips, using growalot's and adding a few more. Always bend at the hip not lower the arm, keep your grip loose, try to stay relaxed and make sure you do all you can to control breathing, make sure your anchor point is the same every time, and practice from different shooting positions ( standing, kneeling, sitting ). When the season gets close and during the season, practice with all your gear on. The jacket/coat, gloves, pants, all of it. Never trust your eyes for distance with a bow. Get some different color surveyors tape and mark off 20, 30, and 40 yards. Takes the guess work out. If you are hunting from a tree stand you have to practice from an elevated surface. Preferably your actual tree stand. Arrow flight is very different from your stand then from the ground. Also, practicing only from the ground you are in a "prefect" posture/form. If there is such a thing. Your feet will be wider apart and set better for the shot on the ground. In your stand your feet will be closer due to the limited surface of the foot plate. It also gets you used to having a tree that can block the elbow, deal with the safety harness, and arm rest if the stand has one.
  19. The down side to trail cams. At least you know he's in the area.
  20. +1 on the above two posts. But the thread isn't about the regs. It is more about learning to use the right weapon or use a different one.
